Editorial Review:

This most complete parent guide covers not only detailed and precise medical information about leukemia and the various treatment options, but also day-to-day practical advice on how to cope with procedures, hospitalization, family and friends, school, social and financial issues, communication, feelings, and, if therapy is not successful, the difficult issues of death and bereavement. Woven among the medical details and the practical advice are the voices of parents and children who have lived with leukemia and its treatments. As many parents have already found, advice from "veteran" parents can be a lifeline. Obtaining a basic understanding of topics such as medical terminology, how drugs work, common side effects of chemotherapy, and how to work more effectively with medical personnel can only improve the quality of life for the whole family suffering along with their leukemic child. Having parents describe their own emotional ups and downs, how they coped, and how they molded their family life around hospitalizations can be a tremendous comfort. Just knowing that there are other kids on chemotherapy who refuse to eat anything but tacos or who have frequent rages can make one feel less alone. Parents who read this book will encounter medical facts simply explained, advice to ease their daily life, and tools to be a strong advocate for their child. This third edition contains significant updates to the information on treatments, chemotherapy drugs, bone marrow transplants, coping with side effects, and resources. It also contains a personal treatment summary and long-term follow-up guide for your child to keep as a permanent record.

History of treatment for childhood leukemia 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Childhood leukemia survival rates have increased dramatically in the last 20 years and this book gives historical perspective of significant treatment breakthroughs and scientific developments through the stories of several doctors and researchers. Excellent reference book for students and researchers, less applicable for medical consumers who may find current treatment-oriented books more useful.

Miracles and Medicine: One Parent's Introduction to Leukemia 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I came across this book while sitting in my daughter's hospital room still inundated with the news that she had childhhod leukemia. It was there amid the pamphlets and literature that symbolized the "dump" our lives had just taken.

I picked it up one sleepless night and, by the time I finished, I knew that my duaghter had every chance of surviving. We faced her two and a half year treatment with a new understanding that we were members of a group of children, families, medical practitioners and researchers who make a difference.

That was five years ago. This book set the tone for our struggles and victories large and small. It gave us perspective. It gave us hope and it gave us gratitude for all of the efforts that, ulitmately, gave my daughter back to me -- healthy and strong.

a truthful account of spiritual healing through grief 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

i read The Healing Room cover to cover in one sitting. i couldn't put it down as the author's voice came through so clearly to me in speaking the truth about loss, grief and healing. the book is a journal of spiritual healing- written in the first person and on a consistent basis during the time of the author's last four months with her daughter. The presence of mind and nuggets of joy that the author and her husband were able to pull out of their daily struggles with their daughter's illness and their own grief gifted me with the knowledge that, even during my own very darkest hours, the universe is open to helping me cope, understand and heal. reading her book was a blessing for my spirit and i highly recommend it for anyone
who is currently going through the loss of a loved one due to illness or who has already gone through it and is looking for a true, heartfelt, first- person account of how one mother and her family transmuted their anguish into joy.

Editorial Review:

With each day that passes, every hour, every moment, loss threatens our sense of security and immortality. Dori Bohntinsky, a Speech/Language Pathologist seasoned with health care experience, shares her recovery from the tragedy of loss when her fourteen-year old daughter, Cj, suddenly developed a rare form of leukemia. The Healing Room is an odyssey in discovering joy and inspiration during an eighteen-month journey through loss—the four-month illness and death of Cj, the death of Dori's mother, and the death of Dori's father.

an outstanding introduction to leukemia for all ages 5 out of 5 stars.

Recently,my six year old daughter was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Her doctor immediately gave us a copy of You and Leukemia. As a beginning reference, the book helped to explain the terms, challenges and struggle we were about to face. I have purchased copies for all of the family members so that everyone can begin to understand leukemia. Writing in a thorough but simple manner, Baker has produced an important resources for patients and their relatives.

Editorial Review:

When a child is diagnosed with leukemia, this is the book for the child and family to read. Known as 'the red book' in the leukemia community, You and Leukemia is written for children, but is often used by adults with leukemia, as well. The new second edition continues to make a challenging disease easier to understand for both children and adults. Extensively illustrated and written in a conversational style, it reflects the relatively recent developments that have made survival a much greater probability than in the past.

  • New comprehensive resource list in the back of the book featuring publications, organizations, and websites.
  • Completely rewritten cranial radiation section that reflects recent developments in this area.
  • New section on surviving leukemia.
  • New coverage of pain management during procedures.
  • Expanded section on What Causes Leukemia includes more on toxic chemicals and EMFS.

Cranes For World Peace 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I recommend this book to teachers, librarians and students everywhere. I first read about Sadako Sasaki in the fabulous book "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerr. I am a children and teen librarian and was moved by this young girl's courage and wish for world peace. I wanted to share this story with my "Teen Coffeehouse" group which meets on a regular basis. They too were touched by Sadako's story. We have gotten involved with the folding of 1,000 origami paper cranes and will be sending them to an elementary teacher in Hiroshima. He will be placing our 1,000 cranes under the Sadako Statue in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on August 6, 2000.

The book, "Children of the Paper Crane" by Masamoto Nasu has given us an in depth description on how this statue had come to be the worldwide known place where children from all over the world can visually show their want for peace all over the world.

It is a wonderful heartwarming book!
