Opened my eyes... 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I am at high risk for skin cancer being pale skinned, light eyed, blonde and living in San Diego. I never knew it was better for me to use sunblock and stay out of the sun instead of trying to go for a base tan, especially in a tanner. Tans only have a suncreen of SPF 5, come to find out. And even people with naturally dark skin need to wear sunblock because they can get skin cancer too, often in parts that go unchecked due to the fact people think their darker skin isn't at risk! These are two of the many "myths" brought out in this guide. Everyone should read this book so they know the facts about these horrible diseases.

This book blew my mind. I have found out the difference between UVA and UVB (and UVC) rays, how to protect myself from the sun and how to check myself to make sure I don't have skin cancer. I am not a real sun lover, but I amazed at all the myths people have about how the sun is healthy and how it is ok to hang out in the sun...people worry more about terrorism and serial killers than the sun and more people will die from skin cancer than dying, let's say, in a plane...it confuses me how people can be so little informed.

This book was written well. It is easy to read and it is sectioned in a way that it is easy to get to the answer you need. I was only going to read the first half, since the rest is about what to do if you have skin cancer, but I read that too, because it was interesting and I would rather know and be prepared if it happens in my future than not know. Like I say, this should be given out at schools in the San Diego area since many of them make the kids eat outside, which is the worst thing for them.

Editorial Review:

This book deals with skin cancer from a doctor's and a patient's perspective.

The Straight Scoop on Rare Lymphomas 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Detailed information on lymphomas of the skin is extremely rare. Actual diagnosis is very hard as patients go from doctor to doctor. This book, while aimed a bit more towards professionals, is still is a wealth of information for the patient or loved one who looks for information on cutaneous/skin lymphomas when it is not obtainable elsewhere.

While the photos may be a bit much for a person newly diagnosed, a patient who has lived with such a lymphoma would value the information in the book.

Editorial Review:

Skin lymphomas are relatively rare. They may arise in the skin itself and as a by-product of HIV infection, or may arise elsewhere as a result of Hodgkin's disease, B cell lymphomas or leukaemia. Whatever the cause, they can easily be overlooked as psoriasis or dermatitis.

Diagnosis of skin lymphoma is difficult and making the wrong diagnosis can prove fatal. Consequently, those in training in dermatology and pathology need to have a good understanding of the clinical presentations and the pathological correlates of this challenging disease.

An Illustrated Guide to Skin Lymphoma is a beautiful full-colour illustrated text and atlas that combines pathology with clinical features and treatment. This second edition includes the latest classification systems for cutaneous lymphomas as well as brand new chapters and an expanded section on treatment.

Editorial Review:

Jeanne Achterberg is an internationally known authority on the use of imagery to heal the body. She is best known for developing the technique known as guided visualization, and she was recently featured in Time magazine as one of the top innovators in the field of alternative medicine. In 1999 she was diagnosed with ocular melanoma, a rare and often deadly form of cancer of the eye. Lightning at the Gate is the remarkable story of her illness and healing—a deeply personal memoir that is at turns haunting, humorous, biting, and exhilarating. This engaging and entertaining book demonstrates how a combination of critical thought, creativity, inner vision, and friendship can lead to profound healing. In Lightning at the Gate, Achterberg writes, "The only way one stays alive after a serious diagnosis of cancer is to find one's vision." This captivating memoir documents her process of doing just that. Choosing to view her cancer as a metaphor, she draws on dreamwork, shamanism, healing imagery, prayer, rituals, songs, immune-stimulation therapy, and the loving care of friends to cure her illness. Lightning at the Gate ends in affirming Achterberg's core belief that we are healed not by medicine but by the bonds we create with each other: care, love, trust, hope, belief, and all the other invisible facets that have lost favor in modern health care. Readers will benefit from seeing how a leader in alternative medicine approaches her own illness: how she weighs the information and choices presented to her by the Western medical establishment; how she advocates for herself; and how she finds her own, individual path back to health. Lightning at the Gate also offers fascinating first-hand accounts of cutting-edge alternative therapies. Also included is a valuable resource section listing books, websites, and organizations offering information on holistic methods of healing. This book is sure to become a must-read for anyone interested in alternative medicine and the healing arts.

Editorial Review:

Sunny days are meant to be spent outdoors--but the sun is decidedly a mixed blessing. With an explosion in skin cancer and an unending array of anti-wrinkle creams, proper care is confusing--and the facts heard through the media are often misleading. Sun Protection for Life explains in simple terms the dangers of improper skin exposure--the introductory chapter alone will have you reaching for the sunblock and hat, even if you're sitting indoors.

The book has a slightly doomed tone, but perhaps that's as it should be; malignant melanoma is deadly, and statistics chart a steady rise in incidence, particularly as tan-loving baby boomers continue ageing. As the authors are founders of Coolibar sun-protective clothing, one would normally expect some degree of product placement, but that's not the case in this book. There is a lengthy chapter on what degree of protection clothing provides, as well as what to look for when purchasing summer wear--but there are equally detailed descriptions of types of sunscreen, suggestions for different age brackets, and information on identifying potentially cancerous growths. The book ends with a resource guide, covering everything from international skin care sources to, yes, sun-protective clothing companies.

What's most impressive is the way in-depth detail is presented with such a matter-of-fact manner; it's easily understandable for anyone past the ninth grade. It also offers steady encouragement for turning the dangerous desire for a tan into a healthy respect for the sun, with regular examples from Australia's skin cancer awareness program that has made incredibly positive changes in that country's cancer rates. While you might not feel the need to join a nation crusade on the topic, at the very least you'll be grabbing a cap and a tube of zinc oxide before leaving home. Jill Lightner

Very Informative 5 out of 5 stars.

I suggest that you keep an open mind about skin cancer and that there are much better methods of curing skin cancer, especially basal cell and squamous cell cancer and also keratosis. I had keratosis on the back of my thigh and also I have a history of skin cancer. After I read the book, I placed an order of the medication mentioned in the book and used it. Guess what? The stuff mentioned in the book REALLY works. I am tired of the butchery of the dermatologists. Of course, I still go to a dermatologist for checkups but I refuse to let him butcher me!!!!!!!!!!!

forget this book 1 out of 5 stars.

Good, clear reference of types and treatments of melanoma. 4 out of 5 stars.

When diagnosed with malignant melanoma last year, I needed information FAST. I found this book helpful, especially for understanding the terminology the doctors were using. It was clear and easy to understand, and thorough.

Not too bad 1 out of 5 stars.

This book was not too bad for a reference regarding Melanoma, however, the information is beginning to become a bit dated.
