A PIONEERING APPROACH TO OVERCOMING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

If you are one of the millions of people diagnosed with high blood pressure, this groundbreaking book can change your life. Unique in combining a medical and a psychological approach, Samuel J. Mann, M.D., explains:

  • How you can tell whether or not your high blood pressure is related to emotions
  • How to find the medication best suited for you, and when to reduce or eliminate unnecessary medication
  • How exploring "hidden" or repressed emotions can reduce your blood pressure and the need for medication

Featuring compelling and instructive case histories as well as the latest medical research, Healing Hypertension can help you make sense of your high blood pressure while offering new choices for controlling it.

"In Healing Hypertension, Dr. Samuel Mann pushes the boundaries of medicine by demonstrating the emotional components of hypertension, one of the most serious health problems of our day. Healing Hypertension shows that it is not enough to attend to our physical bodies; we must look to our emotional life as well if we expect to be healthy and whole. This is an immensely important book."

Escape the Silent Killers Stalking You

Most women don't know that breast cancer isn't their worst enemy. Two silent stalkers, heart disease and stroke, kill two of every five women, largely due to our speed-obsessed, stressed, unhealthy lifestyles. Every minute, we lose one woman to heart disease or stroke in the US, and two-thirds of them had no prior symptoms. It's happening to younger and younger women—women in their forties, thirties, even twenties.

Why are we losing this battle? Because women have different symptoms from men—subtle, easily-overlooked symptoms—that many women, and their doctors, don’t know. A Woman's Guide to Saving Her Own Life empowers women to take control of their life and health.

Mellanie True Hills, author of A Woman's Guide to Saving Her Own Life, almost died in emergency heart surgery. She didn’t even have the traditional heart attack risk factors—she was simply overweight and overstressed, just like many women today. As a high-tech road warrior with an extreme job and an "always-on" lifestyle, she almost died from stress. Shockingly, more than half of all executives will die from stress-related illnesses. Many women are headed for this same train wreck, but the secrets that saved Mellanie could save them, too.

Knowing what to do can save your life! This guidebook helps you recognize the blinking red warning lights of your health and evade these silent killers at any age. This approachable, easy-to-read book provides explanations, tools, assessments, and five easily-implemented steps to:

• Identify and control your risks, including lifestyle, and create a plan you can actually stick to
• Lose weight easily...Mellanie lost 85 pounds with these secrets
• Find out why working women have more stress and how they can avoid it killing them
• Help your doctor give you the treatment and tests you deserve
• Recognize that women have different symptoms—-knowing the difference can save your life
• Share with men in your life what they need to know

The HEART Program in A Woman's Guide to Saving Her Own Life has saved countless lives and could save yours, too!

Reverse and Prevent Heart Disease. Stop the Pain. 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 32 people found this review helpful.

What's the number one killer in America? AIDS? Diabetes? Cancer? America's big killer is heart disease. In the United States, over 1.25 million heart attacks occur each year. To make matters worse many of those who suffer such attacks die before they reach a hospital. According to McDougall, "The cause of the most common form of heart disease is blockage of the arteries that supply the heart muscle. The blockages, results of the condition known as atherosclerosis, are caused by plaques forming along the internal walls of the arteries. Eating rich foods loaded with cholesterol and fats leads to the formation of these plaques. Heredity is also a factor, but should not be over emphasized because at least half the American population is susceptible. Besides, you can do nothing about changing your heredity."

But there is a lot you can change--and McDougall shows you what and how.

He answers all your questions, and most importantly, he backs up his statements with a stack of references to the medical literature. And unlike angioplasty and bypass surgery which are temporary, short-term relief measures (at best), McDougall provides long-terms solutions that remove the cause allowing your body to reverse blockages, and for those without blockages--how to prevent them. His primary emphasis is on a zero cholesterol, very low fat, plant based diet.

The book is fairly complete, includes answers to all your frequently asked questions, includes an abundance of tasty recipes, and explains many things your doctor hasn't told you (in most cases because he does not know). As a former professor in Internal Medicine at Univ. Hawaii Medical School Dr. McDougall does.

If Americans followed the advice in this book there would be little or no heart disease in this country. Best of all if you follow McDougall's advice and follow his dietary advice you will find that the "drugs that were intended to reduce chest pain should be decreased gradually in dosage and then discontinued entirely as soon as possible." This of course should ONLY be done under the supervision of a doctor.

I would buy three copies of this book. One for yourself, one for your loved one, and one for your doctor.

What your doctor does not know may kill you--and many cardiologists sadly are ignorant of the information provided in this book--though thanks in part to the efforts of doctors like McDougall, Ornish, Fuhrman ..., and others, many of them are learning.

Editorial Review:

This breakthrough book offers readers sound advice thousands of people have learned at the McDougall Program at St. Helena Hospital in the Napa Valley of California. Combining step-by-step diet, exercise, and lifestyle recommendations, it is designed to bring about dramatic health improvements in just two months. A life-saver for patients who have already suffered a heart attack or been diagnosed with heart disease, it is equally valuable as an authoritative guide to prevention.
* McDougall's previous books have had outstanding sales and strong backlist sales.
* The McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart is based on the latest medical research.
* "McDougall" television show airs nationwide on Sunday evenings on the American Independent Network.
* McDougall's Right Foods are available at health food stores and grocery stores.

This is a highly readable scientifically based book on how to decrease the risk of developing heart disease. The strongest points are its emphasis on cardiovascular disease in women and the evidence based scientific literature regarding the nature of the problem and the approaches to decreasing heart disease. The dietary advice is sound without being trendy or glib, the advice on appropriate receipes is useful. The guide to adequate exercise and physical activity is very helpful. An excellent book by science professionals for the laymen audience.

I'm 81 years old plus for the last 10 years I've been very sensitive to Blood Pressure Medicines, besides all the reactions to the drugs it didn't lower my BP. Most of the time it was 200/106. I was so miserable all the time, I asked my doctor if I could stop them. After many more tries with several kinds of BP meds. He agreed to stop them. It was then that I got the book on how to lower your BP without drugs. Today my BP is 140/80 and I feel alive again. The information in the book is very clear and understandable. There's so much to learn in the book. It explains it all so well.

Editorial Review:

very informative 4 out of 5 stars.
20 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book summarizes much of the latest research on prevention of cardiovascular related diseases. The author covers almost all (forgot, e.g. "melatonin") of the bases in relating the latest developments in diet related heart disease prevention, and as such I found it an excellent informative book. The author reports the studies, the results, the recommendations and the dosages relating to supplementation of vitamins, minerals, some herbal products, omega 3, etc. etc. The book contains new information that I believe has yet to be widely disemminated.. I discern the same weakness in this book as in much of the current information on diet, to wit, how to combine all into a single plan of treatment. The author might have reported to us that studies have yet to be done on how these divergent benefits of supplements can be advantageously and safely combined, but instead omitted any such discussion. Additionally, and I note this as another suspected weakness in my mind of the medical work currently being done on diet, it seems that all of the information is coming out of what I consider to be highly suspicious "population" studies, as opposed to research on individuals( or monkees) on the chemical effects on a single individual of supplementation. If I am going to take 1000 grams of vitamin C per day, I would like to know the immediate and long term chemical effect, as opposed to knowing that 6000 people lowered their risk of heart attack by 19% by so taking. And, then, immediately after reading the book, what do we get but one study concluding that excess C contributes to, rather than prevents, the problem. But as an educational tool this is a very fine effort!
