Editorial Review:

In 1998, at a Fourth of July pool party in Rhode Island, teenager Jeffrey Galli dove in, struck his head, and nearly drowned. Although his father, Richard, saved him, Jeffrey was paralyzed with a devastating spinal cord injury. In this book, Richard Galli offers a compelling, disarmingly honest account of the decisions and experiences confronted by all such individuals who suddenly find themselves wholly dependant on others to survive—and of the realities that must be likewise faced by their families.

A lawyer and former journalist, Galli writes with much intelligence and stark emotional intensity of life as it is really lived by quadriplegics and those who care for them. An unforgettable story about tragedy, love, and the choices we make at the brink of survival, Rescuing Jeffrey is "gut-wrenchingly candid," as Publishers Weekly observed, and "likely to arouse controversy and sharply divided reactions . . . Yet this eloquent story of heartbreak and hope is ultimately life affirming." The book will be must-reading for all students of counseling, rehabilitation, and related disciplines.

Back Pain and Spinal Alignment 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Kathleen Porter's book is must reading for anyone suffering from spinal disorders including disk degeneration, disk herniation, or back pain. The book presents a well reasoned, practical approach to an area of fundamental importance that probably does not receive enough attention in research and in treatment of spinal disorders. She provides an approach to reducing stress on the inter-vertebral disks and muscles through alignment of the bones by adopting a natural posture. While there is little scientific data to provide an evidence base for the importance of the approaches that she advocates, the anecdotal evidence and theoretical analysis that Ms. Porter provides with the use of photographs and schematic drawings makes for fascinating reading, and seems sensible and plausible. As a physician working on development of new non-operative treatments for spinal disorders such as disk herniation and low back pain, I would recommend the book to anyone interested in assessing different non-operative approaches to the achievement of improved spine health.

Editorial Review:

Ageless Spine, Lasting Health presents information about natural skeletal alignment that may be the most overlooked factor affecting long-term health, genuine fitness and aging. Included are simple guidelines for how to return our bones to an aligned relationship that provides for far greater ease of movement, fewer aches and pains and a process of aging that is more easefull.

A great book with wonderful pictures 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As a neurology doctor, I found (and still find) this book helpful in the cartoon illustrations that detail everything from the nerve roots to plexus to individual nerves that innervate the various muscles.

I loved it when I was a resident in training for its very simple yet succinct graphical nature; as a picture is definitely worth more than a thousand words.

Those who enjoyed Ken Lindsay's Neurology and Neurosurgery Illustrated will certainly like this book and vice versa.

Recommended from resident to resident 4 out of 5 stars.

A wonderful book that presents a complex system in a very simplified format. I'm looking forward to a newer edition that would give further emphasis on peripheral nerve exam.

This book is highly recommended to all the residents in Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery.

osteopathy and neurology 5 out of 5 stars.

My first introduction to Dr. Hoppenfeld's writing was through his book, Physical Examination of the Spine and Extremities. I found it to be concise, well written and very informative as is this text. It is an excellent resource and since in osteopathy a major focus is on the skeletal system it is an excellent aid.
I can understand previous reviewers frustration with the 'bronx bomber'. To be honest, I don't think I would ever want to rely on any one who is unable to spell correctly. It doesn't inspire confidence. How did they ever get into medical school?

Editorial Review:

...a classic monograph that serves as a diagnostic guide to neurologic levels for residents in both orthopedics and neurology.

Spinal Cord Injury: Functional Rehabilitation (2nd Edition) 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found this book is very helpful in providing information in a concise manner without too much detail. It is a great reference book for spinal cord injury information at your fingertips as well as a great resource for board exam preparation. For the therapist not working in a spinal cord injury setting but needs information of this nature at hand, perfect book. Also provides up to date information on wheelchair assessments.

Not much difference from older edition 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I read both editions
The 2nd edition has 2 Chapters that one need to download tediously from another site
Content wise not much difference
Many major advances throughout recent years on SCI NOT included in this book
I regreted this buy since essentially most info are that of the first edition that I already have

I found everything I needed to know about Spine 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

SPINE SECRETs is the latest in the "SECRETS" series of books and I would highly recomend it to anyone training in the spine field. I am a physician assistant and have worked in the spine field for over 5 years. During that time, I have worked with countless orthopedic residents who were doing their spine rotation and three different spine fellows. We all studied from the same materials and would have benefited greatly from this book.

Our office had volumes of books about information that is succinctly covered in this book including, anatomy, clinical evaluation of patients with back problems, review of various imaging modalities of the spine and review of orthosis for the spine. The book also contains an extensive review of adult and pediatric deformities and disorders including idiopathic scoliosis and tumor.

I wouldn't consider this a surgery book. And if you are planning on performing spine surgery, I hope you are reading other texts as well, but this book has some impressive detail. Many chapters offer details and tips on surgical techniques with very nice illustrations. For those who see the patient in clinic before surgery or in the hospital postoperativly, there are chapters specifically addressing those issues.

One of the frustrating things about studying spine is where to start. This book gives you a good place to start. Like I said, it is succinct but it is comprehensive. If you are going to remember anything it is not a fast read, give it some time, it fits in your lab coat pocket!

Excellent Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I think this book was the difference between an A and a B. I liked that it was quick, to the point and relevant.

Great when used with dedicated study 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As a pre-nursing student, the competition is fierce to get into a program. When I first received these study guides I thought I had paid way too much for what I got and thought the material simplistic. What I found is that 25% to 35% of my test questions were very close to the examples given. If you are a serious student, these guides are another tool in your total study regime. They are not intended to be your ONLY source of study and review. There are no easy ways to learn the Sciences, but these focus on some of the commonly tested areas. I wanted all the resources I could find and it paid off with A's.

Editorial Review:

This test preparation study guide is the best in the industry. It is written in an "easy to understand style". It is designed for students of college anatomy and physiology. It is very thorough and specific for each topic, which includes the following: Nerve Tissue, Spinal Nerves & Spinal Cord, Cranial Nerves & Brain, Neural Integrative, Motor & Sensory Systems, Autonomic Nervous System, Special Senses. This is Volume 3 of a three volume series. Volume 1 covers Orientation of the Body, Structure and Function of Cells, Structure and Function of Tissues and Integumentary System. Volume 2 covers Bone Tissue, Skeletal System, Muscle Tissue and Muscular System.

I expected more 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I suppose I had some misperceptions of this book. I was assuming there would be more inspiration that would cajole me into journaling and artwork. I also thought is was he who was disabled - it was his wife. There was little mention of how his wife's diability figured into the whole pictue of his life. As a disabled person, I thought there would be some insight into overcoming disability to do what you want. I do however, love the way he draws and journals. In the end I saw this as a simple journal that anyone might have done. I still have his other book and I have higher hopes for that.

Editorial Review:

"Two years before I started drawing, my wife was run over by a subway train. Sounds really terrible, I know. But, well, this book is about how art and New York City saved my life."
When Danny Gregory's wife was severely injured, his life was changed in an instant. Searching about for meaning for what had happened to his little family, he began to create a richly illustrated journal of his life. Gregory as driven to record and comment on every aspect of his life, from dirty dishes to cathedrals, from hospital wards to life-drawing classes, from brunch with Hell's Angels to book shopping at the Strand.
This unique book chronicles his discovery of drawing, his wife's rehabilitation, his son's infancy, and the life of the city he loves. Funny, bittersweet, romantic, and perverse, Everyday Matters is an inspiration, an invitation to look for the beauty and significance in the details of our daily lives.
