Editorial Review:

In this landmark book, Dr. Teri James Bellis, one of the world's leading authorities on auditory processing disorder (APD), explains the nature of this devastating condition and provides insightful case studies that illustrate its effect on the lives of its sufferers.

Millions of Americans struggle silently with APD. For many of them, holding a simple conversation can be next to impossible. As sound travels through an imperfect auditory pathway, words become jumbled, distorted, and unintelligible. As Dr. Bellis notes, the most profound impact of this highly specific impediment to auditory comprehension may be on the young. Facing a severely reduced ability to read, spell, comprehend, and communicate, children with APD are subject to anxiety, academic failure, and a damaged sense of self. Often, they are misdiagnosed.

Discussing the latest and most promising clinical advances and treatment options, and providing a host of proven strategies for coping, Dr. Bellis takes much of the mystery out of APD. If you or anyone you know has difficulty comprehending spoken language, or if your child is struggling in school, this important book may have the answers you need.

You will be amazed ! 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 30 people found this review helpful.

We all love now to take care of our own health, right ?! Few of us understand, though, the Chinese medicine, unless you read a lot of books on same subject. And then you have to "digest" the information and apply it patiently to yourself. WE ALL ARE UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS. And the ones who will borrow or buy this book will prove to be the smart ones too. Not only that I would recommend this book to all of you who want to change your life for the better (and get rid of your daily pains) but this book --among the thousands written -- is an eye-opener to many other self-healing directions. Beware, at first you will say to yourself that you will need TIME and PATIENCE to go through it (which none of us HAVE anymore!), but you will feel smarter than any doctor in this world, after you assimilate the knowledge in this book. It is better than you imagined by its modest title. One of the best-kept secrets (until now !), trust me on this one. Good luck to all of you !

Editorial Review:

Does your back pain flare up in the evening? Perhaps your water element is weak. Allergies in the spring? Emotional outbursts? Perhaps your wood element is too strong. Each chapter includes:
-Lists of common ailments associated with each element
-Feng shui solutions for the home and workplace

Editorial Review:

A young man’s quest to reconcile his deafness in an unforgiving world leads to a remarkable sojourn in a remote African village that pulsates with beauty and violence

These are hearing aids. They take the sounds of the world and amplify them.” Josh Swiller recited this speech to himself on the day he arrived in Mununga, a dusty village on the shores of Lake Mweru. Deaf since a young age, Swiller spent his formative years in frustrated limbo on the sidelines of the hearing world, encouraged by his family to use lipreading and the strident approximations of hearing aids to blend in. It didn’t work. So he decided to ditch the well-trodden path after college, setting out to find a place so far removed that his deafness would become irrelevant.

That place turned out to be Zambia, where Swiller worked as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years. There he would encounter a world where violence, disease, and poverty were the mundane facts of life. But despite the culture shock, Swiller finally commanded attention—everyone always listened carefully to the white man, even if they didn’t always follow his instruction. Spending his days working in the health clinic with Augustine Jere, a chubby, world-weary chess aficionado and a steadfast friend, Swiller had finally found, he believed, a place where his deafness didn’t interfere, a place he could call home. Until, that is, a nightmarish incident blasted away his newfound convictions.

At once a poignant account of friendship through adversity, a hilarious comedy of errors, and a gripping narrative of escalating violence, The Unheard is an unforgettable story from a noteworthy new talent.

Deaf Culture 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Very informative book about deafness and Deaf Culture. Contains everything you ever wanted to know about deafness and much, much more. I purchased this book for a Deaf Culture class and will never part with it. I am studying to be an Interpreter for the Deaf and refer to this book often in all my ASL and Interpreting classes. #1 Book on deafness and Deaf Culture.

My take 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is very informative; however it is filled with gross generalizations, biases, prejudices, insults and misconceptions.

It's a case whereas the product would sell better if they changed the packaging.

For Hearing People Only 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very informative book on the Deaf Culture from a Deaf person's point of view. It is required for my American Sign Language classes, but it is very useful.

More Human than Human 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Though a rabid sci-fi fan most of my life, I didn't become interested in the subject of real world cyborgs until my own precipitous hearing deterioration. Chorost's book is fulfilling on many fronts for me: his firsthand experience and knowledge of cochlear implants (which appear to be in my future); his very human account of his social struggles; and his obvious love and breadth of knowledge of science fiction, to name just a few. To my own surprise, I devoured this book in a few days. One of the most engaging and satisfying reads I have had in years. Chorost, in my opinion is, to quote Dr. Eldon Tyrell (or Rob Zombie, if you prefer): "More human than human" in this work.

Editorial Review:

After Michael Chorost suddenly lost what was left of his hearing, he took the radical step of having a cochlear implant -- a tiny computer -- installed in his head. A technological marvel, the device not only restored to him the world of sound but also could be routinely upgraded with new software. Despite his intitial fear of the technology's potentially dehumanizing effects, Chorost's implant allowed him to connect with others in surprising ways: as a cyborg, he learned about love, joined a writing group, and formed deeper friendships. More profoundly, his perception of the world around him was dramatically altered.

Brimming with insight and written with charm and self-deprecating humor, Rebuilt unveils, in personal terms, the astounding possibilities of a new technological age.

Insights 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I bought and read this book because of a recommendation given to my husband by his communications course instructor. First of all, just having it with me was a communication helper. People would ask about the title and I would explain what it was about and why I was reading it. Secondly, I liked the book because it detailed numerous real life examples of relationships of those who are hearing impaired and includes the writer's/ psychologist's interactions, observations and recommendations for those individuals. But it was also very emotional reading and it taught me some things about myself and my communication issues. My only negative comment: I would have liked to see a few less examples and some sort of summation -- "a putting together of it all" at the end, but the author didn't do so. But I liked the book and think it will prove even more helpful as I read through certain portions again with a view to applying what I learn.

Editorial Review:

While distressing for an individual, hearing loss also takes a heavy toll on family and friends. These stories chronicle the unique challenges of hearing loss in interpersonal relationships, including communication, self-identity, and how to continue sharing and growing in these relationships. Many shared activities, such as enjoying music, whispering sweet nothings to a lover, and hearing children's voices are deeply missed by both the hearing and hearing-impaired relationship partners. This book illustrates the power of relationships to transform people and how each party has unparalleled opportunities to grow in profound and unpredictable ways.

Great book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I really liked this book and had a hard time putting it down. If you are hard of hearing, deaf, or just can't hear that well this book is for you. It has real life stories of people struggling with hearing loss and Dr. Harvey does a great job of telling them. I felt like I could relate to some of the patients.

Editorial Review:

These 10 true stories document the assaults to self-esteem, the isolation, and the spiritual crises that are faced by individuals with hearing loss, giving an intimate account of how each person triumphed and how therapeutic dialogue offers growth and inspiration. The struggles with the psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of hearing loss in these stories reveals lessons valuable to anyone looking for self-understanding. Readers with acquired hearing loss will find validation of their experiences, and friends and family of people with hearing loss will find avenues for increased understanding and empathy.
