Editorial Review:

The American Academy of Pediatrics currently recommends that: "Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child."
- La Leche League International

There are many benefits to breastfeeding, which range from protecting the baby from illness through antibodies to providing comfort and security. There are also a myriad of benefits for the mother, which include everything from the special bonding that takes place to reduced rates of breast and ovarian cancer.

Despite a mother's best intentions, breastfeeding can prove to be challenging for both new and experienced mothers. And because many hospitals have reduced or eliminated programs on lactation, many mothers are often left relying on the advice of friends, family or a much too busy obstetrician or pediatrician. In a friendly, informative and easy-to-read manner, Better Breastfeeding addresses the concerns, problems and issues breastfeeding mothers face and answers the most commonly asked questions.

Some of the issues that are addressed include:

  • Knowing if the baby is getting enough milk
  • Plugged ducts and breast infection
  • Nursing strike, thrush, and twins or multiples
  • Challenges of latching
  • Sore nipples and engorgement
  • Going back to work.

The authors also provide 125 recipes for the breastfeeding mother that serve her unique needs and, ultimately, those of her baby. There is also some research which indicates that a child's taste preferences are influenced by what a mother eats during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Since the flavor of breast milk changes according to the mother's diet, it influences the types of foods the baby is willing to accept and enjoy during weaning to solid foods.

Bad for nursing moms 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book had really bad breastfeeding advice. I laughed my head off when it said that nursing moms shouldn't pump gas. No wonder some moms think breastfeeding is so difficult!

Waste of Money 1 out of 5 stars.

This book was very poorly written. First clue, its called Your Pregnancy but it is about after your baby was born-that makes no sense! Because it is a quick guide the author takes the liberty of writing full paragraphs in bulleted form. The sentences are incomplete and sometimes do not make sense. It is super repetative and yet not very helpful. I had to stop reading it after 10 pages because the editing was so horrible. Save your money and just read up in What to Expect: The First Year. MUCH better value for money spent.

For people with kids over 9 3 out of 5 stars.
65 of 66 people found this review helpful.

I had great expectations for this book. I respect Dr Cooper and his work. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the book. There are 115 pages of nutriton related information mostly suggested menus and recipes - there are lots of good nutrition books for kids. The fitness evaluations were mostly for kids 10 and older. He recommends an active lifestyle and sports, but that's not worth the money to me. I'd say check this book out at the library for the fitness test information but keep your money in your pocket on this one.

Editorial Review:

There is no longer any doubt that the inherited genetic constitution of the individual has a large influence on the entire life cycle, from human fetal development and pre- and postnatal growth to subsequent health status. However, growing evidence suggests that this predisposition is not rigid, but that early genetic imprinting, caused by exposure to a diverse spectrum of nutrients, macromolecules, microbial agents and other cellular or soluble components present in the external environment, is also of importance. According to this concept of the developmental origins of adult diseases, intrauterine and early life events play an important role in the etiology of human diseases: there seems to exist a critical >window of opportunity' in the human infant before and during pregnancy, and up to 24 months of age. Altered exposure to different environmental agents during this critical period may determine the nature of responses in the perinatal period, and the expression of specific disease states in later life. The papers presented in this publication thus focus on the impact of perinatal growth, nutrition, environmental microflora, and host immune responses on the outcome of health and disease in later life.
