One of the most important anthropology books in recent times 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In this widely-praised study, Carol Laderman provides a vivid picture of the daily life of rural Malays as she focuses on their dietary practices and the ritual and medical aspects of childbirth procedures. Apprenticed to a village midwife and a local shaman, she was able to observe a traditional culture adapting to modern practices.

"Carol Laderman's book is not only a contribution to the study of birth customs, it also raises broader questions of the relationship of belief systems and behavior.... We need more studies like this one - detailed, empathic, and thoroughly grounded both in observing behavior an in understanding traditional belief systems." E. N. Anderson, Jr., Medical Anthropology Quarterly

"Wives and Midwives offers a good balance between general theoretical argument and rich ethnographic description. For many women readers, the book will strike a personal chord as the fieldworker recalls her experiences in the field situation. ...Ideal for Southeast Asian area courses and medical or nutritional anthropology courses." Penelope Van Esterik, Journal of Asian Studies

"Laderman's study of birth and nutrition in a rural Malaysian village is based on a unique combination of ethnographic and nutritional data.... Worth reading by those not only concerned with Southeast Asia but also medical anthropology, nutritional anthropology, and women's studies." Sheila Cosminsky, American Anthropologist

From the makers of The Well Fed Baby line of organic, soy-based baby food, this book offers parents easy-to-make, all-natural recipes as an alternative to baby food. Not only are these recipes better-tasting and healthier than processed jarred baby food, they can be made at home in just minutes and at a fraction of the cost. Some of the recipes are presented by guest chefs who share with you their favorite ways to feed their little ones.

The Well Fed Baby will teach you the basics of making baby food at home, as well as the benefits of using organic foods and soy foods, and how to initiate healthy eating habits from birth. The authors guide you through the different stages of feeding your baby, from milk and strained cereal at six months to chopped foods at twelve months. Your baby will love meals such as Carrot Puree with Mint, Baked Acorn Squash and Brown Rice, and Broccoli and Chicken Dinner. And you will love knowing that you are giving the very best to your well-fed baby.

The Well-Fed Baby offers parents an alternative to jarred baby food, most of which is loaded with sweeteners. Making baby food at home is easy-almost all you need are fresh fruits and vegetables and a food processor or blender. Following Robin Sweet's recipes, the results are delicious purees of apples, mangos, bananas, carrots, and other foods that babies love. The Well-Fed Baby will be an essential purchase for expecting parents.

The Well-Fed Baby is the tie-in for a new television program by the same name, airing Fall 1999 on Fox FX, Fox Fit TV, and brand-new Fox Health networks. Produced by author Robin Sweet, the new series will cover everything related to keeping your baby healthy: diet, exercise, and so much more. Robin Sweet will demonstrate how to make baby food at home on each episode. Just what I've been looking for! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I'm a long time fan of Mothering magazine, and a devotee of attachment parenting and natural living. I was so frustrated in my first pregnancy, trying to find a book that approached eating during pregnancy from this viewpoint. Now at last, as I prepare to enter my second pregnancy, the book I wanted is here!

Robin Lim talks briefly about nutrition in the early sections. Brief is ok with me, and most of the mommas I know who would like this book would be fine with that as we tend to already be pretty nutrition-savvy.

The heart of the book is the recipes. We've only tried a few so far, but we've enjoyed them! The Caffeine-Free Chai has become a favorite of my 5 year old, and we made the Raw Chocolate Pie for a recent potluck & everyone raved over it! Can't wait to try more recipes!

One small problem with the book - it seems to have a small marketing problem, the cover of the book is such that at first glance it appears to be just another mainstream 'what to eat while pregnant' book. It's NOT - it's very much geared towards us 'hippie momma' types! I almost didn't pick the book up when I first saw it because it looked so standard & I knew I was looking for something different. I'm very glad that I did pick it up, but it may have trouble reaching the intended audience for that reason.

Editorial Review:

Between the bizarre food cravings and the nausea, preparing balanced meals is often the last thing on your mind when you're pregnant. In EATING for Two, childcare and women's-wellness expert Robin Lim presents more than 150 easy-to- prepare recipes, using wholesome and simple ingredients for achieving optimal health and avoiding discomforting side effects during pregnancy. With a focus on plentiful options for nutritious and satisfying meals, she also provides information to determine which foods deliver sufficient protein, calcium, iron, and other necessary nutrients, to ensure a healthy start for the new baby. An essential cookbook and resource for mothers-to-be and breastfeeding moms, EATING FOR TWO is like having a wise-woman healer, supportive friend, and personal nutritionist by your side.

Excellent history of public health and breast feeding 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This is really a wonderful book. As a parent and someone interested in health in general, I learned a lot. First off, the research behind the book is incredible: the author has combed diaries, old magazines and tons of public records to reconstruct what life was like for women and families at the turn of the century. You really get a feel for the pressures that women were under from society, from changes in culture, from advances in medicine. Even though it's a complicated story, Wolf has broken it down into easy-to-understand chapters. There's a chapter devoted, for example, to the urban milk supply, and how the absolutely filthy conditions in which milk was brought from the country to the city contributed to the dramatically high infant-mortality rate. There's a chapter on wet nurses -- a fascinating story in and of itself as it describes how some women were forced by poverty to sacrifice the health and well-being of their very own children just so they could get a job nursing the baby of a more well-to-do mother.

One of the most eye-opening lessons from the book is that public health reformers who were so keenly interested in bettering the quality of the milk supply inadvertently contributed to the popularity of formula feeding. Mothers were turning to artificial feeding for a whole array of social reasons, but in doing so, were exposing their infants to formulas created with spoiled, rancid and contaminated milk. Hence reformers, desperate to save lives, pushed both breast feeding and reforms to clean the milk supply. They achieved their goal of a cleaner milk supply (another fascinating story that Wolf covers in-depth) but, in the process, inadvertently made artificial milk a more accetable alternative to breast milk -- just another example of a well-intentioned public policy gone awry.

This is a book for people who really want to understand why attitudes toward breast feeding changed in this country and why bottle-feeding has become the norm. I never could understand why so many women bottle-feed -- when breastfeeding seems obviously like the better, healthier choice -- until I read this book. I'm afraid that many mothers simply don't give enough thought to their decisions about breastfeeding. But clearly the author of this book has given the subject a huge amount of thought -- and can all be glad that she did. This is a really powerful and well-researched contribution to what we know today about attitudes toward breast feeding both yesterday and today.

Nutrition in pregnancy and lactation 5 out of 5 stars.

My edition is now an antique so this review is not current. I was fortunate enough to have the author as instructor in a course with the same title at UW School of Nursing in 1980 and I can safely say it is the single course which has made a daily difference in my life ever since. Worthington-Roberts has great integrity and this permeates a piece of professional literature in a way one seldom sees. I was thrilled to see that the book is available in a current edition and would recommend anything by this author on the subject of maternal and child nutrition without reservation. Today I practice as a staff midwife and breastfeeding specialist in a hospital in Norway but still find English language sources to be the best on such topics as this. There are now many, many books on pregnancy, breastfeeding and lactation, but there will always be a place on my bookshelf for this one.

    Editorial Review:

Nutrition in Pregnancy and Lactation provides balanced, comprehensive coverage of nutrition needs during and between the times of these unique physiologic events, as well as offering extensive practical information on counseling and support for breastfeeding mothers and their infants.
