Not for Graphic Design 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

After reading the reviews and product description, I was looking forward to some fresh activities that would inspire some creativity for Graphic Design projects that I work on constantly. So when the book arrived I flipped through scanning activities and quotes to get a feel for the book and what it had to offer. I was surprised. To my disappointment this book almost had nothing to do with Graphic Design. It was filled with activities that lent themselves more to Elementary school creative activities -Build something out of "_", describe your favorite "_" without using the words like or as. The book design itself even became tough to read as well with various typefaces, multiple type sizes scattered through the pages. In conclusion not what I was looking for.

Editorial Review:

Perfect for any designer or creative type who wants to quickly limber up their imagination on a daily basis, "Caffeine for the Creative Mind" helps readers get into the creative zone, from which all their best work springs. It features an edgy sketchbook design (by the authors) for visual allure. Packed with 15-minute simple and conceptual exercises, this guide will have readers reaching for markers, pencils, digital cameras and more in order to develop a working and productive creative mindset.

Get ready to give up that morning latte and kiss cola goodbye. Here comes Caffeine Blues, by Stephen Cherniske, M.S., the first book to expose the dark side of America's No. 1 drug: caffeine. If you are one of the nearly 80 percent of Americans hooked on caffeine--a natural component of coffee, tea, and chocolate and a common ingredient in drugs, soda, candy, and other products--this book will be a wake-up call.In Caffeine Blues, Cherniske, a nutritional biochemist with more than 25 years of academic research and clinical experience and author of the bestsellerThe DHEA Breakthrough, reveals the truth about caffeine and explains how to kick the habit forever. Cherniske discusses how caffeine affects the body and brain and why it can increase your risk of dozens of health disorders ranging from osteoporosis, diabetes, and PMS to hypertension and heartburn. After spending 300 pages documenting all of caffeine's evils, Cherniske finally offers a decaffeinated life line: "Off the Bean and on to Vitality," a step-by-step, clinically proven program to help readers kick the habit and boost energy levels naturally. --Ellen Albertson

Editorial Review:

The first comprehensive guide to overcoming addictions by using  natural remedies that rebuild health for both body and mind from the inside out.

• Covers a full range of natural remedies, including herbs, homeopathy, aromatherapy, flower essence remedies, color therapy, acupressure, and more.

•  Addresses many different substances, such as caffeine and chocolate, and discusses how the body deals with withdrawal, detoxification, and repatterning.

•  The natural remedies included in this book can be used in conjunction with conventional therapies.

•  By well-known author Brigitte Mars, who has 30 years of experience with natural therapies and is the formulator for UniTea Herbs.

Addiction is one of the most serious health issues facing our twenty-first century culture. Modern lifestyles encourage us to consume excessive amounts of caffeine and sugar and to unwind from our stressful lives with tobacco or alcohol. Left untreated, some addictions can cause metabolic damage, leading to heart disease, high blood pressure, and immune disorders--as well as causing nutritional deficiencies, fatigue, and depression.

Addiction-Free--Naturally offers gentle but effective ways to ease cravings and nourish the body, as well as information on cleansing the body of accumulated toxins and using natural remedies for stress relief. The remedies can be used in conjunction with conventional therapies, such as psychotherapy or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. The author also offers advice on designing a personal program to break addiction and finding a health care professional or program to offer expert guidance as you walk the road to recovery.

Editorial Review:

Caffeine is the world's most popular drug! Almost all of us start our day with a jolt of caffeine from coffee, tea or cola. And many of us crave chocolate when we're stressed or depressed. Without it we're lethargic, headachy and miserable. Why? Why do we crave caffeine? How much do we really know about our number one drug of choice?

Here is the first natural, cultural and artistic history of our favorite mood enhancer -- its discovery; its early uses; and its unexpected importance in medicine, religion, painting, poetry, learning and love. Weinberg and Bealer tell an intriguing story of a remarkable substance that has figured prominently in the exchanges of trade and intelligence among nations and whose most common sources -- coffee, tea and chocolate -- have been both promoted as productive of health and creativity and banned as corrupters of the body and mind or subverters of social order.

The World of Caffeine is a captivating tale of art and society -- from India to Balzac to cybercafes -- and the ultimate caffeine resource.

Great book! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is a very interesting book, especially of you have been affected by caffeine and would like to have a better understanding of its influence in the human body. I found the book to be written in both, a memoir as well as a scientific way. Some chapters are very specific in defining chemical and biological processes, and might be tedious to some people. Nevertheless, it is a great source of facts and stories, told not only by the author but also by others who have experienced a life change due to the consumption of caffeine.

Excellent information on a secret world wide epidemic! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book! There is so much described here which I can immediately relate to. I had eliminated caffeine from my diet a few weeks prior to a internet search revealing this book. It confirms many issues which my doctor left unanswered. I had previously asked him if there was such a thing as caffeine allergy, and he replied,"No". I still knew there was something about caffeine. Why did soft drink manufacturers substitute cocaine with caffeine? Why do they put it there in the first place? Because it is an addictive drug which keeps you coming back for more, much like cigarettes and other "hard drugs". What makes a drug "hard" anyway? Is it because it is way too obvious to slip past most people? Just a few things do think about while you wait for your copy to arrive!

Editorial Review:

A century overdue! At last, a book on caffeine toxicity - diagnosed as ADHD, OCD, anxiety, panic, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, TMJD, PMS, and more.

Editorial Review:

We all know that caffeine helps keep you awake and alert, but the things we don't know about caffeine could fill a book. Now Bennett Alan Weinberg and Bonnie K. Bealer, the award-winning authors of The World of Caffeine, the foremost reference book on the science and culture of caffeine, have done just that -- creating an authoritative self-help guide to caffeine's little-known practical secrets and benefits. Based on groundbreaking new research, The Caffeine Advantage offers step-by-step programs that show you how caffeine can improve your IQ, memory, mood, athletic ability, physical condition, and performance at work. In the process, Weinberg and Bealer debunk common myths and misconceptions -- that caffeine causes hypertension, anxiety, heart disease, even cancer -- and show the many positive and life-changing effects of strategic caffeine use.

Everyone in today's competitive environment is looking for an edge, and caffeine can provide the little boost that gives you the advantage you need to succeed. The key is knowing what caffeine can do for you and how to use it effectively. Here are just some of its amazing advantages:

  • Improves your ability to think clearly and solve problems, and can actually raise your IQ

  • Increases your short-term memory, helps you concentrate, and relieves boredom

  • Is a powerful antioxidant, combating muscle damage and helping you to stay younger

  • Improves your mood and overcomes depression, creating an "attitude of success"

  • Helps you run, swim, and cycle longer and faster

  • Increases the painkilling power of common analgesics and is itself a strong pain reliever

  • Grows brain cells in the areas of the brain responsible for long-term memory

Already widely acclaimed by many of the foremost academic researchers in the world, including Dr. Paul Kulkosky, whose foreword introduces the book, The Caffeine Advantage delivers a comprehensive program for working smarter, not harder, and for improving mood, athletic fitness, and mental performance.

Many impressionable children are at risk to a myriad of health problems caused by caffeine 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I suspect that a few Starbucks stock holders like Richard Johnson are attempting to discredit the author of this book, who among other things is the founder of the Caffeine Awareness Alliance, a not-for profit organization.

Excessive caffeine is awful for you and this book defines the risks taken when consumed.

Overzealous? - hardly. Historical? sure. Theoretizing? Nope, this book is packed with countless clinical studies to help you draw your own conclusion. I fully support her efforts.

So many impressionable children are at risk to a myriad of health problems caused by caffeine including ADD, hyperactivity, poor concentration and caffeine addiction.

It's interesting that Coca-Cola & PepsiCo started listing on their labels the caffeine content. I think the efforts of the author and her organization are paying off. Now only if the coffee industry followed this example that would be great (c'mon Starbucks)

Why I'd recommend this one 3 out of 5 stars.

I just got through talking to a local Poison Control director for research. Why? Because caffeine poisoning and reactions and concerns about caffeine have prompted many parents, teens and others to call these centers with symptoms that go beyond the usual jittery nerves and buzz of normal caffeine drinkers.

To be honest, I enjoy a daily cup of coffee as much as many people. I'm not a purist and I haven't sworn off caffeine or drinks that contain it. But the scary reality is also that products like potato chips, breath mints and some energy drinks contain as much caffeine as 2 cups of coffee! Potato chips?! Yes, you read that right.

Now imagine this: an unwitting teen or child or even a toddler chugs an energy drink or swallows some breath mints, following that with those high energy potato chips. Without eating or drinking another thing, that person could have high levels of caffeine in his system. With recent reports linking caffeine to higher rates of miscarriage, perhaps it is time to think about what caffeine can do to developing teens and children.

There is no regulation of these products. This book can tell you a bit more about the dangers of caffeine and how and why people might want to think about which foods and drinks and candies contain caffeine.

Again, I'm no purist. But the facts about poison control centers and increased caffeine poisonings are real. People are reacting to caffeine more often. I don't know if they are INTENTIONALLY taking in large amounts of caffeine or simply don't realize that some over the counter meds, breath mints, jelly beans, energy drinks and..yes. even potato chips can contain caffeine. But I tend to think that increased awareness is a good thing. Now you know.

This book will reveal what you can do about the amount of caffeine you injest, how to go through caffeine withdrawal or cut back (if you want)...and more.

Editorial Review:

Witty, insightful, inspiring, and sometimes just plain weird, Haiku for Coffee Lovers is the perfect book for the friendly barista or addicted afficianado in your life. One hundred seventeen-syllable gifts plus room to add a few of your own! If you're looking for modern literary haiku with a kigo (season word), a kireji (cutting word), and objective sensory imagery, all carefully crafted in fewer than 17 syllables, your shopping cart is in the wrong aisle. You might not call this haiku, or senryu, or even poetry. This is more pseudo-haiku, plain old 5-7-5 with more puns than punditry and wisecracks than wisdom! DAVID ASH learned his first haiku in sixth grade. It began with the word hototogisu (cookoo), and he felt an instant connection. He should also have been learning about spelling, grammar and punctuation, but he thought haiku gave him a loophole. By the time he got a degree in English from Georgetown University, studying 20th Century poets like e. e. cummings, it was a wonder he got a job as a secretary. He eventually realized that no one could check your spelling when you sang what you wrote. Three albums, years of church choir directing and a Masters in liturgical music from Santa Clara University followed. David finally figured out that his wife, son, family and friends seemed a lot happier when he would use no more than a dozen words at a time. So he regressed to his sixth grade roots. David doesn't seem worried that his first haiku is being published at an age when Matsuo Basho was writing his last. Basho's inspiration is still there and haiku is about the journey.
