It works!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because I was exhausted and about 650 people had given it positive reviews. It actually does work!!! Within 12 days, my son was sleeping through the night, and I re-entered the world of functioning, thinking human beings!! Pantley has taken a very scientific approach to developing this method, and it shows. It seems to be geared more toward co-sleeping families, but she includes advice for crib-sleepers as well.

The Book's Title Says It All! 5 out of 5 stars.

We did the Ferber method of sleep training with my son when he was 5 months old, and it worked very well at that age. He was a great sleeper and napper from that point until at 8 months old when he got a cold/stuffy nose that hung around for 2 weeks - during which time he couldn't sleep well and in order for him to be able to breathe through his nose at all, we had to hold him upright against our chests, so that's what we did for him to fall asleep for naps and at bedtime. After the cold finally went away and we attempted to go back to our old routine of laying him down (sleepy but awake) to sleep, he would start crying, and was by then able to pull himself up to standing, which made the whole process much worse.

After a few days of attempting to retrain with the Ferber method, I decided it wasn't worth it. Even though I knew the Ferber method would probably work again eventually, all I could think was: how many days of misery would it take, and then what would happen the next time he got sick or we traveled? I definitely did not want to go through the stress and guilt of hearing him cry if we would have to retrain with the Ferber method each time something like that happened.

So, I decided to read the No Cry Sleep Solution. She gives many good pointers for helping your baby to fall asleep as well as to sleep longer, both at naps and at bedtime/through the night. We were already employing the majority of her ideas, but I did get new information that I feel is sound advice. The best evidence is that my son will now allow us to lay him down for naps and at bedtime as he's sleepy, but falls asleep on his own, with no crying. I admit this approach requires more patience and time initially, but in my opinion it was totally worth it to avoid the days of crying! I would suggest reading this book to any parent interested in learning good techniques for helping their baby to sleep well. I initially checked this out through the library but intend to buy one to have on hand for future reference with our next child(ren)!

Editorial Review:

A breakthrough approach that offers hope to exhausted parents looking for gentle ways to help their baby sleep without the heart-wrenching tears. Until now the only two ways to deal with sleepless nights were to let your baby cry herself to sleep or to become a sleep-deprived martyr and tough it out from dusk until dawn. The No-Cry Sleep Solution will show you how it is entirely possible and within your grasp to help your baby fall asleep peacefully--and stay asleep all night long.

I give it to everyone. I bought this when I was pregnant. I was given it as a gift from my neighbor too. I have bought 3 more times as gifts for mothers to be. I will buy more. It is a wonderful resource on literally everything. I found that it is not too opinionated. They do state their preference and their the other choices. It is not set up strictly according to age either. I highly recommend for any new parents.

Editorial Review:

In their excellent (and hefty) resource guide, The Baby Book, attachment parenting specialists William Sears and Martha Sears have provided new parents with their approach to every aspect of baby care basics, from newborns to toddlers. Attachment parenting is a gentle, reasonable approach to parenting that stresses bonding with your baby, responding to her cues, breastfeeding, "wearing" your baby, and sharing sleep with your child. For those parents who worry about negative effects of this attention, the Sears say, "Spoiling is what happens when you leave something (or some person) alone on the shelf--it spoils."

Disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

After reading the other reviews of this book, and another by the same authors (The Pregnancy Book), I purchased both, and am dissatisfied with both. Both books are written at about the 8th grade level, and The Birth Book is definitely written with a solid bias towards one school of birthing techniques.

There's an entire section on "interviewing OBs and deciding which hospital to have your child." For those of us with insurance plans, and a hospital five minutes away, the browbeating about how you're irresponsible and don't care enough if you don't give your OB the fifth degree before allowing him or her to do his or her job, this can be a bit off-putting.

Additionally, the focus on having a "birth plan" and "envisoning your perfect day" comes off sounding a good deal more like planning a wedding than having a baby.

While the book does a good job of presenting a variety of different options that first-time mothers (like myself) might not have considered, I found that talking with my husband's aunt, an OB nurse of 30 years' experience, to be much more calming, simply because the tone of the aunt was one of common sense, while the tone of this book is, well. . . it's hard to characterize without being disparaging, but it's a little flower-power for my tastes.

Editorial Review:

In The Birth Book: Everything You Need to Know to Have a Safe and Satisfying Birth, William and Martha Sears, authors of The Baby Book and creators of the concept of "attachment parenting," here turn their attention to the birth experience. In this helpful resource guide, the Searses cover the gamut of possibilities, and teach readers what they need to know to take control of their own birthings. The Birth Book is divided into three parts: "Preparing for Birth," "Easing Pain in Labor," and "Experiencing Birth." You'll find details about vaginal births; cesareans; VBACs; water births; home births; best birthing positions; drugs; pain; how to design your own birth plan; the humor, chemistry, and sexuality of birth; and pages and pages of birth stories.

Good information, bad organization 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Overall a decent book, with a good mix of medical and personal information. However, it's not my favorite. For a single book, I prefer the Unofficial guide; however, my main recommendation would be to go for the _Girlfriends Guide_ / _The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy_ pair.

The book suffers greatly by forcing *all* the information into a month-by-month format. Plus, some of the information is placed into a very questionable month. For example, the information on traveling while pregnant is in month 6; given that, as the book says, the best months for traveling while pregnant is months 4 - 6, if one really reads it month by month one is going to be really pissed to learn it's too late!

Editorial Review:

The Pregnancy Book is an excellent all-in-one guide to pregnancy from William and Martha Sears, creators of the concept of "attachment parenting." Each of the book's chapters represents a month, and deals with physical and emotional changes, describes the growth of the fetus, and discusses common concerns. The authors also focus on nutrition, exercise, information and support for home births and birthing centers, traveling while pregnant, how to avoid episiotomy, and so on. The approach is gentle, thorough, and includes more information than some month-by-month guides, which makes The Pregnancy Book an excellent choice for pregnant couples.

very useful book 5 out of 5 stars.

I highly recommend this book. Very helpful, especially for those parents that fail to be consistent and "go with the flow", failing to create strong rules and a loving, solid discipline.
This books acts a self-confidence booster for parents, offers very empathetic advice when it comes to parental anger, and actually gives very practical tips and hints to deal with misbehavior.
I love the humor and the bright, positive thinking that fills up the book, and I really appreciate the fact that Pantley also addresses other side issues like marriage skills and parental self-esteem.
Overall a great book.

Best parenting book 5 out of 5 stars.

Alright 2 out of 5 stars.

This book has some REALLY good info on why breastfeeding is best. However, if you don't subscribe to the author's way of parenting (attachment parenting) than you're better off reading another breastfeedng book that is soley about breastfeeding and not about pushing a way of parenting on to you that you may or may not agree with. Especially if you do plan on returning to work.

Editorial Review:

In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in breastfeeding. Yet first-time mothers often lack the support and the knowledge they need. Many of the available books fail to address the practical challenges that confront many women (especially women who work outside the home) when they choose to breastfeed. For these women, The Breastfeeding Book is a godsendwith comprehensive, reassuring, authoritative information on: how to get started, increasing your milk supply, breastfeeding in absentia, and making sure that your nursing baby gets the nutrition he/she needs. Americas favorite pediatric experts turn their attention to the hottest topic in parentingsolving babies sleep problemsin a definitive book that offers immediate results. For every parent whos ever been deprived of sleep by a restless infant or toddler, now theres hope. This much-needed addition to the Sears Parenting Library is the comprehensive, reassuring, solution-filled sleep resource that virtually every American family will want to own. Nighttime separation anxiety, new breastfeeding habits, and an increase in adult sleep problems have made babies sleep habits a growing concern in recent years. The Searses offer solutions. Instead of espousing the kind of one-method-fits-all approach advocated in other parenting books, the Searses teach parents how to match the nighttime temperament of their baby to their own lifestyle. The authors draw on important new infant sleep research from the Mother-Baby Sleep Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, as well as on their own personal experience as parents of children with a wide range of sleep habits. They also offer a detailed critique of the myriad new devices and ballyhooed techniques that promise to deliver safer and better infant sleep. THE BABY SLEEP BOOK provides parents with the practical tools they need to help the entire family sleep better.

For older children learning to go potty. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book has lots of great info for parents as well as nice pictures, but it's written for older kids who can already speak well and ask complicated questions. It seems like it's aimed toward children over 2 1/2, most of whom are already in the process or done learning to use the potty. I do think the notes for parents will be useful for me.

shows nursing and co-sleeping 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Unlike most books, this book pictures a mother nuring her baby and a co-sleeper. I am not fond of the cartoon illustrations, but they are not terrible (I usually prefer photos instead). My 19 mo. old daughter loves this book.

Great book for AP and "crunchy" parents 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My son loved this book from the time we got it. In fact he is now 3 1/2 and had been using the potty for quite some time and he still asks to read it. Loved it's pro-breastfeeding slant. Also really appreciated its talk about diapers as we used cloth and always dropped the poopy in the toilet when they were dirtied. (Packages of disposables also tell you to do that actually as it is considered bio-hazardess waste) However, if you are not pro-breastfeeding and are uncomfortable speaking frankly about body functions, then this wouldn't be the book for you and there are probably many other books out there that would suit you better. Highly recommend this book!
