Editorial Review:

Susan Shapiro Barash, acclaimed author of Second Wives and Sisters, turns her penetrating powers of observation to the oldest of triangles, exploring the uncharted dimensions of mother-in-law, daughter-in-law, and son/husband roles. Women whose mother/daughter-in-law status is fast approaching, newly acquired, or well established will benefit from this book, as will the son/husband stuck in the middle. Barash leads readers through this complex relationship to a better understanding of the dynamics of insecurity, generational jealousies, child rearing dilemmas and power struggles. Utilizing an extensive survey of hundreds of women, their mothers-in-law and the men they share, Barash presents the real voices of those affected, the mixed feelings and problems faced as well as the ways in which they learned to cope and solutions devised. Interspersed with these first-hand accounts are the insights and recommendations of noted psychologists and relationship counselors.

From Mothers-in-law and Daughters-in-law, readers will learn how to create a mutually independent and rewarding relationship that allows mother-in-law, daughter-in-law, and son/husband to grow.

From a Mother's Heart Who Knows! 5 out of 5 stars.

EXCELLENT! Until my husband & I were given this wonderful book, along with his other book, "BACK IN CONTROL," we had exhausted countless hours in counseling, along with parenting book after book over the years, that didn't help, until Gregory Bodenhamers. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN! I have given so MANY copies to other struggling parents of teens, like our son, along with "preaching" his techniques & words of wisdom on a daily basis with other parents I have spoken too. I call them, My Parent Bibles! Personally meeting Mr. Bodenhamer in his "Back In Control" workshops, he has a delightful, unique, & very funny way of bringing his words/skills to other parents, professionals, or anyone who works with troubled/struggling teens. His dedication shows thru & his heart is in the right place! I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND his books! They have given us the first sense of HOPE we had desperately needed. My Son has had control of our house for years, but UNTIL I READ THIS BOOK, I NEVER realized, even being a Nurse, HOW CRUCIAL it was to have a set "STRUCTURE," "CLEARLY DEFINED Rules," "CONSISTENT FOLLOW-THRU," & understanding what "MONITORING at the LEVEL OF NEED," means! Nursing school never taught me anything like these insightful books, when it comes to dealing with difficult kids! HOORAY! For Gregory, saving the day, to help us parents find a BETTER way!

Editorial Review:

Would you like your kids to follow the rules the first time you ask, without backtalk, bickering, or screaming matches? Now, the creator of the most popular parenting seminar in the United States explains his amazingly simple, stunningly effective system of discipline that enables parents to help children ages 3 to 16 become self-motivated to follow the rules at home and at school.

Parents can set up the five-step Smart Discipline system within an hour or two. It can be used by any caregiver and is easily tailored to differences in age, temperament, and the needs of children with ADD/ADHD.

The book shows parents how to use this system to quickly solve common problems such as: messy rooms, disrespectful language, chores, fighting and bickering, lying, whining, and homework problems. It also empowers parents to get their children self-motivated to behave properly at school. Most parents will see results within several days of starting the system and they can continue to use it effectively for years to come.

Once Smart Discipline is part of the home, parents can stop the nagging and criticism that destroy children's desire to achieve. Dr. Larry J. offers powerful self-esteem builders for children, including showing parents how to identify children's unique talents, encourage them to develop their abilities, and celebrate their successes.

With this book in hand, you can implement the system that more than a hundred trained mental health professionals teach in more than three thousand schools, churches, hospitals, and civic organizations nationwide. Practical, straightforward, and effective, Smart Discipline is the wise choice for all parents who want a family life that sets the stage for their children's success.

Amazing strategies for prosperity and intimacy 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Too many self-help books offer vague "positive
thinking" advice. Not so with this one. Virtually
every type of financial conflict is addressed in these
pages, and the reader is given fun, interesting, and
effective ways to specifically address problems, gain
insight, and to start a mutual creative path toward
prosperity. The book is filled with real-life stories
of couples with conflicts over money - it's impossible
to go through it without finding situations that you
can perfectly identify with. One section provides a
method for weighing the value of your time - this
section allowed me to make a compelling case to my
husband that hiring occasional household help would
actually help rather than hurt our bottom line! Even
though my marriage is strong, I could still find many
tips which were powerful and effective for moving us
forward financially.
As a psychologist, I frequently see clients facing
the types of problems discussed in this book. I'm
delighted that this volume exists as a resource for
them, one that I'm glad to refer them to. This book
is strongly recommended for any couple, or for any
professional who counsels or advises couples.

Editorial Review:

The making and sharing of money is a loaded issue for every couple. A Citibank survey found financial issues to be the primary reason for divorce, but in this practical guide, clinical psychologist Jonathan Rich shows partners how to avoid finance-based conflicts and make negotiating money matters both pleasurable and productive. Section One starts with a self-assessment quiz to help readers determine their own "money personality" from categories such as "gambler," "banker," "homesteader," "pioneer," "spartan," or "monarch." Working from this foundation, the couple can learn to navigate differences in money-management styles and effectively negotiate financial matters. Section Two focuses on strategies for growing money. Quizzes and exercises reinforce these concepts and make learning them fun. A final section helps readers decide when to seek professional financial help. 20 worksheets are included.

Editorial Review:

Behaviorist David Lieberman thinks all conflicts have something in common. Whether you're dealing with the complaining customer, the coworker with charisma bypass surgery, or the fallout from forgetting a friend's birthday, the resolution lies in understanding what he calls the "conflict recipe." The ingredients of all conflicts are fear and perceived loss of respect, says Lieberman. When people and events don't respond as we planned, we fear a loss of control. We compensate and translate this fear--and the lowered sense of esteem it brings--into anger. Ergo, conflict resolution is accomplished by offering the injured party the ingredients for restoring self-regard and a sense of control.

Based on this recipe, Lieberman creates dozens of step-by-step scenarios for resolving conflicts of every shape, including family money feuds, contretemps with friends, personality clashes, passive-aggressive coworkers, and differences in values. Other particularly strong chapters direct readers to seek forgiveness for their own behavior and provide emergency techniques for standoffs and longtime estrangement. Lieberman explains his basic theory with clarity, and illustrates its practice with smart strategies and chapter summaries. This practicality and consistency allow Make Peace with Anyone to deliver on the title's promise. --Barbara Mackoff

Editorial Review:

What do partners do after a fight? If they're like most people, they apologize: "I'm sorry. I had a bad day and I took it out on you." Or, they wake up the next morning and pretend that nothing happened, hoping their partner will do the same. In neither case do they talk about the fight. They're too afraid that doing so will simply rekindle it--and they're right; it probably would. But since they don't talk about the fight, nothing ever really gets resolved.
Daniel B. Wile, author of Couples Therapy and After the Honeymoon, devotes this entire book to an analysis of a single night in the life of a couple, Marie and Paul. By tapping into their self-talk (their ongoing conversations with themselves), he discovers what starts, escalates, and rekindles fights--and also, what potentially allows for a useful conversation about a fight. Wile reveals the half-thoughts and half-feelings that generally go unnoticed: the anxious flashes; depressive waves; two-second, self-directed diatribes; and two-second mental divorces.

Just what I needed... 5 out of 5 stars.

I just completed Tongue Fu @ school. This book was just what I needed to revitalize myself. I am a principal of a Catholic School in Colorado. Our parent community can sometimes be a bit of a challange. After reading your book I have decided to purchase copies for all of my teachers.

Raves for Tongue Fu! at School! 5 out of 5 stars.

It's obvious that Sam has kids and has been through trying times with their schools. Her practical advice is not like what I've read before. It offers simple yet effective techniques that can be mastered by anyone and can be used in many other life situations. We all want our conversations with teachers and principals to be productive and not blaming. Sam's do's and
don'ts about dialogue helped me "get it" quickly. I think it's going to help me in my talks with my children also. I hope their teachers read it too.

Editorial Review:

This book is for educators that want to learn real-life responses to situations faced everyday in the classroom, on campus, in the front office, at extra-curricular activites, in staff meetings, PTA meetings, and district meetings.

Editorial Review:

There are few things on the planet that can drive an adult crazy as fast as a ceaselessly whining child--we are often reduced to tantrums ourselves by this incessant complaining. If we were just better parents, our kids wouldn't have to act this way to get our attention, right? Not exactly. Whining happens because, often, it works. Whining also happens at any age and in many forms, and can be a very destructive behavior pattern if allowed to continue into adulthood. In this extremely useful and practical little book (you can read it in a couple of sittings), the authors explain how whining functions for both the child and parent and how the latter can deal with it. The recommended techniques are based on the work of pioneering psychiatrist Alfred Adler, and are gentle and respectful to both parent and child but also firm in setting limits for acceptable behavior. Authors Audrey Ricker and Carolyn Crowder teach parents how to dive beneath the admittedly choppy surface of whining by communicating assertively and then to change things from underneath the maelstrom. Numerous "real-life" examples are offered, as well as corresponding methods of response, but the scripts wisely shy away from a simplistic "one-size-fits-all" solution. The notebook at the back of the book will help families keep track of exactly what is going on and assist in reducing whining so that everyone in the family interacts more peacefully and productively. --Katherine Ferguson

My child is no longer teased! Thanks for the techniques! 5 out of 5 stars.
72 of 74 people found this review helpful.

This is truly the best book about grade school teasing on the market! I didn't know what to do and my 8-year-old daughter didn't want to go to school anymore. She is a very sweet capable child. However, she has a wandering eye that often looks cross-eyed. She wears very thick glasses and is a bit shy. First she no longer wanted to ride the bus because of 2 kids that continued to call her "buggy bug eyes" and other mean things. So, I began driving her to school because the name calling was breaking my heart. Then after 2 weeks, she began to cry that she no longer wanted to go to lunch or out to recess and I didn't know what to do. The social worker was working with the teacher to discipline the teasers, but the behavior was still going on. The parent library at my school had a copy of "Easing the Teasing" and I read it and worked with my daughter. We practiced responses that she felt she could tell the teasers. She actually enjoyed these role playing rehearsals at home with me. And, after 10 days, she was ready to go on the bus and try them out. Her favorite calm responses were "Really?" or "So?" which really caught the boys off guard. Her reply communicated to the teasers that the put-down really didn't matter or bother her. It's like shrugging your shoulders. Two days later on the playground she responded confidently to the taunts with "Do they look like grasshopper eyes or bumblebee eyes today?" That moment was the end of being called " buggy bug eyes"! Although my child is quite shy, with enough practice and "self talk", she was able to do this and proud of herself that she solved the problem. Thanks Judy for a superb book! I'm sure this will help so many children successfully put an end to the cruel teasing while enabling them to nurture their own self-esteem at the same time.

Editorial Review:

Empowers young children with vital coping skills to help them manage teasing

Easing the Teasing is a crucial reference for parents and educators who want to help teasing victims acquire the coping skills necessary to manage these painful incidents. Easing the Teasing provides elementary and junior high school kids with a repertoire of strategies to deflect and discourage teasing--including positive self-talk; ignoring; visualization; reframing the tease; complimenting or agreeing with the teaser; using humor; simply saying, "So?"; and asking adults for help.
