Surprising 5 out of 5 stars.

I expected some discussion of problems people over 50 have keeping their weight down. There is almost no mention of weight or weight loss, except to say that losing weight slowly, as advised, consists of not eating the equivalent of a small piece of cake each day. A lot of the book is for people who want to do more aggressive cycling than I will likely do. Still, it pushes the rider to be more aggressive for more improvement. The chapter on psyching is very good and highly recommended. The book also discusses using a heart rate monitor to know when a period of recovery has done its work.

Editorial Review:

Cycling Past 50 will show you that with proper training and the right attitude, your biking years after 50 can be your best ever. Inside you'll find:

• key training principles;

• advanced workouts for endurance, climbing, and sprinting;

• training advice for 100-mile events and multi-day tours;

• strategies for getting into racing form;

• tips and exercises for preventing injuries;

• advice on proper body fueling; and

• ideas on how to get mentally psyched to ride.

This book is part of the Ageless Athlete Series published by Human Kinetics, designed to help readers stay active and feel younger every day.

Editorial Review:

THERE IS NO DOUBT that our bodies change with age, as the baby boomer generation is now learning firsthand. But many of the problems attributed to inevitable age-related changes are in fact not inevitable and are often lifestyle induced and reversible.

In this new book, Moffat and Lewis show how to overcome the aches, stiffness, and unsteadiness in your muscles and joints. Using their simple, self-administered tests, you will assess your level of physical performance in these five critical domains: posture, balance, strength, flexibility, and endurance. The authors help you develop a personal profile, according to the results of these tests. Easy-to-follow strengthening and stretching exercises, based on the latest clinical research, are included along with a Thera-Band ® resistive exercise band for use in some exercises.

More than a simple how-to book, Age-Defying Fitness encourages you to take responsibility for your physical well-being, and offers an easy everyday approach to achieving better health.

not as expected 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is not for someone who has no access to machines. A lot of the book is devoted to the use of gym equipment. I was hoping for more instruction when there are no machines..or trainers....a basic book for beginners. This is not that book.

title a little deceiving. Typical Westcott. 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for a book with information on training older adults. This book isn't about that... It is a book on general weight training with general programs and general guidelines. It's a typical Westcott book with a few pages of general guidelines and principles and a few program examples. The majority of the book is pictures of exercises which are absolutely useless if you own any other book on weight training and have a basic understanding of resistance training. If you know anything about weight training and exercise, don't buy this book.

Editorial Review:

Strength training is an equal-opportunity exercise system; studies show that anyone who tries it can benefit. Muscle loss is inevitable through the years if you're sedentary. But no matter how old you are when you start, strength training has nearly immediate benefits: more muscle mass, more strength, less fat. This book gives older exercisers all the information they need to get started, including advice on testing for strength and how to pick a qualified personal trainer.

Editorial Review:

As baby boomers pass age 50, problems with knees, ankles, and backs are leading them into lower-impact forms of fitness. The stress of career and later-in-life children also have them seeking new ways to relax. Combine these pressures and it is no surprise that yoga is increasing in popularity among the 50-plus crowd. Tailored specifically for this burgeoning population, 50+ Yoga offers a straightforward approach that makes it easy to learn yoga at any age.

The book's adaptable program allows readers in good shape to experience a challenging workout, while people with physical limitations benefit from gentler postures, breathing exercises, and meditation practices. Throughout the book, the author focuses on the needs of older beginning students, providing tips for moving comfortably into a pose, avoiding injury, and using helpful props, such as chairs, foam blocks, and cotton straps.

The author details the basic principles of yoga and teaches the common elements of all postures and movements: alignment, breath, and awareness. However, the vast majority of the book is devoted to teaching the yoga poses through the use of step-by-step photos, clearly written instructions, and helpful hints from the author.

Wonderful gift idea!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have bought this book now as a birthday gift for my father, my husband and two of our friends (all of whom are athletes who are definitely NOT sissies!). It is such a beautiful testimony to the fact that age is just a number. I hope someday I might qualify to be in one of Etta Clark's future edition of this book.

Gotta love the [...] kicking old farts 5 out of 5 stars.

As a 50 year old runner and biker, I loved this book. I am now firmly entrenched in middle age and need the occasional inspiration to get out on the trails of Houston especially during the brutally hot summers. This book is full of what I need. A beautifully photographed and written book portraying active seniors competing and loving life, some well into their 90s. Truly amazing. The book is generally formatted with a picture and a few paragraphs written about and in some cases by these special people. By personal favorite is 83 year old surfer "Woody" Brown pictured with his 6 year old son Woody Jr. (Yep.... do the math) A copy of their picture is posted on my refrigerator for those days I hesitate to lace up the running shoes.

Editorial Review:

This sequel to the best-selling Growing Old is Not For Sissies teaches us to reevaluate the popular associations of age with increasing malaise and infirmity. Instead, it presents 100 vital, compelling portraits of senior athletes accompanied by personal statements and poems on aging. Growing Old is Not for Sissies II is testament to the joy of physical activity and of living to a ripe old age. Fourth printing. By Etta Clark.

Editorial Review:

For many people, growing old means gradually slowing down-losing strength, balance, and even mental clarity. But is this physical decline inevitable? "Absolutely not!" say the Coopers.

Start Strong, Finish Strong is about living the life we all want-now and as we age. It's about breaking free from chronic pain and nagging injuries. It's about refusing to give up the activities we love and discovering new ones along the way.

Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper, the "father of aerobics" and the world's leading authority on preventive medicine, joins forces with his son, Dr. Tyler C. Cooper. Together they give readers the tools to start strong and finish strong. Exercise is the primary way to keep our bodies strong, flexible, and vital, so it's obviously a centerpiece to the plan. Other equally important components include the Coopers' unique "gold-standard" annual medical exams that can pinpoint potential health problems before they get out of control; good food in healthy portions; a strategic approach to supplements; help with bad habits like smoking and substance abuse; and a well-developed mind-spirit practice. Readers who follow Dr. Ken and Dr. Tyler Cooper's individualized, adjustable program can expect to feel younger with each passing year.

The Coopers' simple, intergenerational strategy for starting and finishing strong tackles obstacles that interfere with true fitness, gets to the root of common excuses, helps readers to identify special motivational "buttons" that will make them feel good as they get in shape, and explores the latest science that can enhance personal progress. Along the way, the Coopers bring their years of experience to readers with engaging case studies and stories.

Editorial Review:

Though younger weekend warriors often find that they can compete at a high level with little off-the-court conditioning, that simply isn't the case for atletes over 50. But getting older doesn't mean giving up one's favorite sport. Nor does it mean losing to younger competitors! Total Sports Conditioning for Athletes 50+ provides sport-specific workouts that allow aging athletes to maintain the flexibility, strength, and speed needed to win. By following the targeted, step-by-step workouts in this book, older athletes can see how a small amount of the right exercise will keep them at the top of their game. Athletes like Jerry Rice and Roger Clemens have proven that proper conditioning can allow professionals to extend their careers to ages previously believed impossible. Similarly, non-professional athletes can use the combination of aerobic, plyometric and functional training workouts in this book to keep themselves free of injury and still enjoying the game past 50 — and beyond.

Somehow I always thought I would stay young, but suddenly 50 is looming on the horizon! George Schofield wisely and in a very readable format lays it out for us: now that we are here, what do we need to do to take care of ourselves, our families and the rest of our lives.?

Schofield is smart, practical and gave me a lot of think about. I would reccomend this book to all those babyboomers who never trusted anyone over 30, and are now in our 40's 50's and 60's! Yipes! How did this happen? Thanks! I'm buying it as gifts to give to my friends.

Yoga for Young at Heart: Gentle Stretching Exc. for Seniors 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Originally I purchased this book for my 83-year old Mother. When it arrived I decided to do the exercises so I could better help her. Well, I fell in love with the feeling the yoga exercises in this book gave my body. I have exercised regularly for over 5 years and was active prior to that. Before reading this book, my exercise routine involved limited stretches prior to working out with free weights. Now, the yoga exercises found in this book, added to my daily routine of weight lifting, have brought a sense of balance to my body.

Highly recommend this book.

This book was easy to read with easily followed instructions 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

As a yoga student as well as an instructor, I found this book an excellent resource for a beginner of any age. Ms. Ward directs the new student through the yoga postures in a concise manner which is easy to read. Her instructions are also easy to follow and she offers modifications for those who are less flexible as well as offering challenges for students who, either through regular practice or general good health, wish to add a few harder postures. I use this series during my classes with good results and beginners of all ages seem to enjoy it.

Editorial Review:

A valuable introduction to yoga for Seniors. This guide book, the first of its kind, is designed specifically for Seniors and offers inspiration and instruction to promote a healthier life. Specific instruction for 32 poses along with their benefits and an inspirational quote for each are accompanied by explanations of breathing and other yoga basics.
