A manual for understanding the anatomical and emotional components of posture in order to heal chronic pain

• Contains self-help exercises and ergonomics information to help correct unhealthy movement patterns

• Teaches how to adopt suitable posture in the modern sedentary world

Many people cause their own back and body pain through their everyday bad postural and movement habits. Many sense that their poor posture is probably the root of the problem, but they are unable to change long-standing habits.

In The New Rules of Posture, Mary Bond approaches postural changes from the inside out. She explains that healthy posture comes from a new sense we can learn to feel, not by training our muscles into an ideal shape. Drawing from 35 years of helping people improve their bodies, she shows how habitual movement patterns and emotional factors lead to unhealthy posture. She contends that posture is the physical action we take to orient ourselves in relation to situations, emotions, and people; in order to improve our posture, we need to examine both our physical postural traits and the self-expression that underlies the way we sit, stand, and move. The way we walk, she says, is our body’s signature.

Bond identifies the key anatomical features that impact alignment, particularly in light of our modern sedentary lives, and proposes six zones that help create postural changes: the pelvic floor, the breathing muscles, the abdomen, the hands, the feet, and the head. She offers self-help exercises that enable healthy function in each zone as well as information on basic ergonomics and case histories to inspire us to think about our own habitual movements. This book is a resource for Pilates, yoga, and dance instructors as well as healthcare professionals in educating people about postural self-care so they can relieve chronic pain and enjoy all life activities with greater ease.

Editorial Review:

Do you feel that if you could get rid of some of the chaos in your work life, you could take your performance to a greater level? Do you stay late at the office many nights, trying to empty an inbox that never seems to diminish? Do you have difficulty dealing with cantankerous bosses or passive-aggressive coworkers? Do you find yourself checking your BlackBerry—almost against your will—during dates, family dinners, or your children's soccer games? If you've answered yes to any of the above, chances are you feel fragmented, pulled in too many directions at once, frustrated. Your work life has taken over your personal life.

In The One-Life Solution, Dr. Henry Cloud, consultant, bestselling author of the Boundaries series and Integrity, and clinical psychologist, examines the workplace. He demonstrates how our failure to maintain a unified life with good boundaries at the office not only blurs the line between the professional and the personal, but leaves us less equipped to deal with the problems of today's workplace: stress, heavy workload, and a blistering pace. As a result, we are overworked, overstressed, and unhappier than ever. Through real-world examples from years of working with leaders at companies large and small, Dr. Cloud shows us how to construct and enforce better boundaries against the technological devices, bullying bosses, and distracting coworkers who invade our time and space.

From conducting an audit of your time, to developing a policy of who you are and what you stand for, to learning how to overcome a paralyzing inability to say no, Dr. Cloud provides invaluable strategies and scripts for moving toward a more unified, coherent sense of self and a life that fully encompasses work, family, and spirituality. In a clear, conversational voice, he will help you develop the ability to:

  • contain self-destructive behavior and keep it from spreading.
  • define yourself and know who you are.
  • set limits when needed.
  • communicate effectively.
  • learn how to improve your performance at the office and outside it.

By starting to do what's best for you, you'll find the key to living the one happy, fulfilling life that only you can live.

Editorial Review:

Anatomy and Asana offers an easy and successful method to learn anatomy and its relationship to yoga in a way that helps prevent injuries. It is written by a certified yoga teacher with a diverse background in kinesiology, ergonomics, and physical rehabilitation.

Anatomy and Asana answers many practical questions that are often asked by yoga students – about back pain, knee pain, and shoulder pain; about clenching the butt in back bends, and how to release the hamstrings or prevent hamstring tearing in forward bends. The book combines hands-on information with illuminating drawings, stories, and helpful tips to show you how to practice yoga with less pain. It informs without overwhelming the reader with too much information.

Anatomy and Asana is divided into four parts: basics of anatomy; language of anatomy and movement; the eight essential principles of movement as they relate to yoga; and application of these principles to specific groups of yoga asanas: standing poses, back bends, forward bends, twists, and inversions. For each group, the book shows where there is a tendency for injury and what you can do to instill space in your body and thereby prevent injury from occurring.

Editorial Review:

The acclaimed author of Back Rx and Arthritis Rx (more than 50,000 combined copies in print) returns with the first book fully devoted to improving your golf game and reducing pain.

Many recreational and professional golfers suffer from some form of lower back pain. Conventional wisdom suggests that the violent, twisting nature of the golf swing, which puts undue stress on the spine, is the sole culprit. But research conducted by sports-medicine specialist Vijay Vad, M.D., with PGA Tour pros, recently published in the prestigious American Journal of Sports Medicine, reveals that the swing is only one of several factors. Applying Dr. Vad’s winning combination of mind/body wisdom and medical expertise to the game of golf, Golf Rx shares his cutting-edge findings and addresses such topics as:
• The proper body mechanics for a stable golf swing
• Power tips to improve driving
• Eighteen essential stretches for eighteen holes
• Five-minute warm-up and cool-down routines
• Keeping an aging body in great shape
• Common golf injuries—and how to resume activity
• The Golf Rx exercise series

Combining the best of Pilates, golf-specific conditioning, and physical therapy, Dr. Vad’s easy to follow exercise program contains three series that will speed recovery from the most common golfers’ injuries, help reduce future injuries, and enhance performance by building swing specific flexibility, strength, stamina, and balance.

Excellent Book 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

The best parts of this book are the detailed photographs of all the exercises, included in both a large format (one per page) and a small format (so that you can see many exercises per page). The only thing that would make the book even better would be if the small photographs were offered separately on water-resistant material, so that you could bring 'em into the pool. I'll probably photocopy those pages, and laminate them, so that I can do that.

The book has a helpful appendix of commercial resources with products such as an in-pool exercise station, and Aqua Tunes. Some of the companies appear to have gone out of business in the 11 years since the book was first published--to be expected.

By the way, the average rating here would be 5, but one reviewer apparently forgot to add the star rating, while still offering the book a glowing review.

Dangerous information that leads you down an endless path of pain 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I, like many of the reviewers on this site, thought this was the best book written on the subject of RSI. It was my bible for over a year. I bookmarked the pages about stretches and exercises and read them daily. I brought it to my physical therapist, and used the information as a justification and proof of my very real 'physical' injury. The book explained to me and others why my 'poor' posture and 'over' exertion were the cause of regenerative dispositions in my body.

I am a cello player, computer gamer, and person that tends to push themselves very hard.

As far as i am concerned, there is only one part of this book worth the two stars I give it. This is the chapter that briefly mentions in a very skeptical manner a man named John E. Sarno.

I laughed at the description of this Doctor who claimed that the pain was caused by emotions. It was a con and placebo if I ever heard one.

After 2 years of studious, dedicated, fully applied physical therapy, and using the concepts in this book, I was in more pain than I was when I first read it. How could this happen? My anger about my lack of recovery fueled my rage.

Then, my doctor, a specialist in RSI, recommended Sarno's book to me. I remembered reading about Sarno in Damany's book. Could that really have any basis in reality?

So I read Sarno's book and I got better in a week. Send me a message if you don't believe me and I'll tell you again. ONE WEEK.

So, this book, like all the other books on the subject, is completely wrong. It never helped me, it only prolonged my 'injury' for years. I really wish the writers of this book would begin to look at facts rather than assumptions about cures.

Don't read this, don't recommend it. I keep a copy in my library so I am familiar with the literature that misinforms and is contrary to the truth.

Read "The Mind-body Prescription" by John Sarno.

Good luck.

Editorial Review:

This guide offers computer users who suffer from repetitive strain injury (RSI) an effective program for self-care. It explains the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of RSIs and also addresses the often-overlooked root causes of RSIs. This holistic program treats the entire upper body with ergonomics, exercise, and hands-on therapy, increasing the likelihood that surgery and drugs may be avoided.

Very Good, but Not a Turnkey Solution 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm seeking a way to return safely to piano after recovering from bi-lateral tendonitis. Several approaches stand out: Taubman Institute, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, and body mapping. I want an approach that is safe and effective, specific to piano, and economical (everything else being equal). Mark's book is my first purchase: the book is piano-specific, exceedingly cheap relative to the full $800.00 Taubman 10 DVD set, and sufficiently packed with accurate anatomy to impress my occupational therapist (hand specialist w/ Ph.D.). So far, so good . . .

Now for the fine print: the book is 90% anatomy, not piano playing. There are isolated pointers based on anatomical facts, but the emphasis is, "Musician, heal thyself." The methodology is for the musician to learn their body, listen to their body, trust their body, obey their body. I'm looking for a recipe book (it is safe and effective to play scales like this, arpeggios like this, reach with your thumb like this, . . .), not a book about how to grow my own ingredients.

This book has merit and value, and I'm glad I bought it, but it is not enough by itself to get me back in the saddle. Looks like I have some Taubman videos in my future.

Editorial Review:

Techniques on how to gain greater fluidity of movement while playing to improve the quality of the experience are offered in this manual for serious piano players. This book encourages musicians to develop a broader understanding of the involvement of the entire body in playing-and the strains playing places on the body-by focusing on body mapping to increase awareness of the body's function, size, and structure. Ways in which piano, organ, harpsichord, clavichord, and digital keyboard players can eliminate or prevent carpal tunnel syndrome and other debilitating conditions without traditional medical treatments are also explored.
