Editorial Review:

People today are spending more time at work and less time being active, whether by sitting in front of a computer all day or in a car battling grueling traffic-or both! Working on the Ball solves this problem by providing an innovative, playful approach to fitness, no gym shoes or expensive club membership required.

Authors Jane Clapp and Sarah Robichaud, both fitness professionals, don't take themselves-or readers-too seriously. They offer a fun, reasonable routine that any office worker can follow from day one.

Hour by hour, the authors take readers through a full day of 'active sitting,' using a stability ball as a chair, and provide guidance for making healthy choices in the workplace.

Also included are photographs to help illustrate each exercise and plenty of encouragement, motivation, and coaching. The authors even offer tips on after-work stress management and other health subjects.

Among the book's topics are:

" evaluating your posture

" choosing a ball

" stability ball safety

" avoiding eye strain and "brain drain"

" desk setup

" healthy snacking

Working on the Ball makes a great gift or a quick pick-me-up for oneself.

An indispensible book for every musician 5 out of 5 stars.

Every musician who wants to avoid a playing injury or is recovering from such an injury should own this book. This is not a read-once book but a book to use and refer to until one has it memorized. It gives easy-to-follow instructions for safe warming up, exercises and stretches to do at home and even some for doing on stage, ways to avoid injury and means to stay healthy when one has recovered. The psycological and social aspects which confront injured musicians are sensitively dealt with in "The Athletic Musician". The title already tells us that this is a relevant approach to treating the subject of musician's health. Read it, it could save your career!

READ THIS AND START PLAYING AGAIN. THERE IS HOPE! 5 out of 5 stars.

After a year of computer/instrument tendonitis, I FINALLY found this book, which really gave a lot of good, CURRENT information. Better yet, I made the pilgrimage to see Dr. Paull in Stouffville, Ontario. It was worth the 10-hour drive. She gave me a lot of important information that contradicted a lot of misinformation given to me by well-intentioned doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, pharmacists, etc. who seem to just perpetuate the status quo of repetitive strain injuries and rehabilitation without really researching new information about them. Read this book, consult Dr. Paull and start playing again. Christine Harrison, the musician who co-wrote the book, had a musician's horror story to tell and she is now playing professionally again after a FIVE YEAR UNNECESSARY hiatus. The book also has excellent information regarding stretches, posture, excercises and anatomy. READ THIS BOOK AND GET THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO START PLAYING AGAIN! I did. I guarantee you can, too, if you follow Dr. Paull and Christine Harrison's advice. Good luck.

P.S. Doing hand strengthing excercises to get better? STOP NOW. You are probably hurting yourself. The only thing you should use to strengthen your hands is your instrument.

Editorial Review:

An innovative approach that teaches musicians how to prevent and manage injuries, presented in a unique format that combines sound medical protocol with a musician's point of view.

Editorial Review:

This book has become a bible for those suffering from RSI. It explains what to ask your doctor (and why) when you go in for a diagnosis; it also lists more than two dozen types of RSI and related conditions, from cervical radiculopathy to reflex sympathetic dysfunction to fibromyalgia. If these terms sound intimidating, then the book succeeds in bringing them down to clear, manageable definitions.

Quilter and Pascarelli also delineate the causes of RSI that are often unconsidered, including being obese, typing while cradling the phone with your shoulder, and having long fingernails. They don't discuss many of the different surgeries used for RSI but instead choose to discuss the various kinds of physical and occupational therapy treatments; acupuncture; stretching; vitamins and nutrition; relaxation techniques, deep tissue massage, and guided visualization. There's also an extensive list of helpful tricks for adapting to living with RSI, from making changes in the kitchen to re-learning how to drive.

This is also the RSI book if you’re looking for information on the psychological ramifications of RSI and how to handle both time off from work and the return to the office.

Very useful but could be more 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This 5th edition is very in depth for medically qualified people active in occupational and therefore also in environmental health. All aspects, medical, social, even political, are fully discussed. Appropriately this sentence is stressed : Screening and monitoring, in and of themselves, prevent nothing; only the appropriate intervention, in response to results of these tests can prevent.
However, nowhere is it precisely stated which results should have an intervention as a result.
I bought this book because my "Industrial Chemical Exposure. Guidelines for Biological Monitoring" by Robert R. Lauwerys and Perrine Hoet. 2nd ed. Lewis, Boca Raton, 1993, looked a bit outdated. I must confess, in my new acquisition I miss pages 290-305 of the old one (16 pages of tables, titled "Biological Monitoring of Chemical Agents", with a column each for 1.Chemical agent 2.Parameter, 3.Biological material, 4. Reference value, 5.Tentative maximal permissible value, 6. Remarks.)

For that kind of data the new text refers to the websites of the CDC, ATSDR, etc. There, it is not that simple to find intervention limits for the hundreds of chemical nuisances.

Editorial Review:

This thoroughly updated Fifth Edition is a comprehensive, practical guide to recognizing, preventing, and treating work-related and environmentally-induced injuries and diseases. Chapters by experts in medicine, industry, labor, government, safety, ergonomics, environmental health, and psychology address the full range of clinical and public health concerns. Numerous case studies, photographs, drawings, graphs, and tables help readers understand key concepts. This edition features new chapters on environmental health, including water pollution, hazardous waste, global environmental hazards, the role of nongovernmental organizations in environmental health, and responding to community environmental health concerns. Other new chapters cover conducting workplace investigations and assessing and enforcing compliance with health and safety regulations.

Editorial Review:

Pain and injury are near constant companions for professional musicians. Aching hands, painful joint swelling, back problems, among other ailments were all thought to be part of the price musicians had to pay to be performers. However, thanks to an increasing awareness of both the kinesiology and biology of movement, as well as proper techniques for fostering good performance habits, musicians no longer have to suffer in silence.
Perhaps no group of musicians has been more prone to career-threatening injury than percussionists, and the demands for speed, power, control, and endurance are only increasing. Often musicians wait until an injury is so aggravated that it's too late to be fully treated. In almost every case, if the drummer had done some very simple preventative (or early) care, the injury would never have become a serious issue.
The Percussionists' Guide to Injury Treatment Prevention is designed to aid in that early prevention and treatment. Although it is not a substitute for clinical diagnosis or medical care from a trained physician, it can educate the musician as to how the human body works; the role of muscles and skeletal structure in supporting movement; and understanding specifically how to prevent and treat common injuries. The book begins with a general discussion of how the body works and basic prevention concepts. It then covers each specific area of the body (where it hurts), suggesting practical ways to prevent and treat it. Basic anatomy is covered in terms that a musician can understand.
For all percussion students and professionals, The Percussionists' Guide to Injury Treatment Prevention will be an indispensable companion.

Editorial Review:

There are more than 500,000 carpal tunnel surgeries done annually in the United States but approximately 30 percent of these patients will be no better as a result. The truth is, most physicians are too quick to consider surgery as the first line of defense against carpal tunnel and other repetitive-strain injuries. In this comprehensive guide to recognizing and treating these debilitating conditions, Dr. Scott Fried takes a strong position against surgery and offers self-healing alternatives that have better results. From understanding the signs and symptoms at an early stage to modifying work and lifestyle; from proven alternative therapies and helpful medications to nutrition and exercise, The Carpal Tunnel Helpbook provides authoritative advice and practical, up-to-date information to spare many patients the ordeal of surgery to treat their injuries.

Mold toxins can cause many illnesses, including Attention Deficit Disorders, Insomnia, etc 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Mold toxins can cause many illnesses, including Attention Deficit Disorders, Learning Disorders,Insomnia, Anxiety, Irritability, Mood Swings, Joint Pain, Headache, Chemical Sensitivity,Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Obesity, Blurred Vision, Itching and Rashes. The Environmental Protection Agency reports 30 percent of buildings in the US, have mold. This book describes how to find and measure mold growth and toxins, in buildings and how to test for and treat mold toxicity in patients.

Our Florida Detox patients love this book. Mold neurotoxins can cause addictions to alcohol, opiate pain pills, Xanax, Klonopin or other benzodiazepine tranquilizers. Some of our patients have experienced dramatic decreases in anxiety or insomnia, merely by moving out of mold infested dwellings. Mold Illness and Mold Remediation Made Simple, by James Schaller, MD and Gary Rosen, PhD, was written in a comprehensible style, for patients, who often are suffering memory and concentration impairments. The book contains numerous cartoon drawings, which help make it more understandable, if you are suffering "brain fog."

The discussion of mold toxins in buildings, includes advanced, state of the art testing techniques, including laser particle counters, and infrared photography to detect hidden mold growth. Inexpensive, practical advice discussing how to safely change air conditioning filters, which filters to use, and how to control humidity are also included.

Medical testing for mold toxicity, immune impairment and hormonal depression is complex, but Dr. Schaller briefly discusses some tests, which help indicate whether patients suffer mold toxicity and how the toxins are attacking the body. Although not a complete list of tests usually performed by Dr. Schaller, the 13 blood tests, discussed in this book, would likely detect abnormalities, if mold toxins were harming a patient. Lymes Disease neurotoxins can produce many of the same symptoms as mold toxins and Dr. Schaller explains why Lymes is so underdiagnosed and which laboratories actually perform accurate testing. If you are weary of physicians telling you your symptoms are all in your head and you need to see a psychiatrist, find a physician who will order these tests. Many physicians will not be familiar with the MMP 9, TNF alpha, MSH alpha, VIP, Myelin Basic Protein, Complement C3a, VEGF or Interleukin 1 beta tests, but they will frequently detect abnormalities, which more common tests will miss.

Many public schools and governmental buildings contain mold toxins. The authors explain many public schools become mold incubators in the summer, when air conditioning systems are shut down to save money. Modern school construction, with flat roofs, central air conditioning and heating systems and windows which cannot be opened, increases the probability of mold neurotoxins. The authors suggest mold in public schools contributes to attention deficits and learning disorders.

Mold Warriors or Desperation Medicine contain more thorough discussions of the medical aspects of mold toxins, along with informative case histories, but Mold Illness and Mold Remediation Made Simple is an informative introduction and overview of mold toxicity and building remediation, especially if your concentration is impaired by fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue or chemical dependency.
