Excellent Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've never written an Amazon review before, but this little book impressed me so much that other readers should share its benefits.

I damaged my knee in a motorcycle accident and had recurring pain for two years. A string of hospitals, therapists and acupuncturists were all unable to diagnose, never mind treat, the problem.

Enter Jim Johnson Stage Right>>>

6 weeks after doing only part of the exercises, my knee has stopped locking up and I don't feel any discomfort after playing soccer.

In short: I can't recommend this book highly enough. Well done Mr. Johnson and your team.

Editorial Review:

In easy-to-grasp language, author Jim Johnson covers the physiology of the knee and the kinds of pain that affect it, along with the psychological aspects. He offers a series of straightforward exercises based on current medical data and tested in his practice. Black-and-white drawings show exactly how to do the exercises and pinpoint the precise muscles responsible for the problem. This concise, simple guide provides an effective do-it-yourself program.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive, user-friendly medical yoga program designed for management and prevention of arthritis, with over 400 illustrations.

Arthritis restricts movement; yoga increases range of motion: these two were made for each other. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in this country, limiting everyday activities for more than seven million Americans. Drugs, surgeries, and steroids can alleviate some of the discomforts, but study after study has shown that exercise is most beneficial to most forms of arthritis, specifically low-impact, flexibility-enhancing exercises—hence, yoga. In this comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated guide, Loren Fishman and Ellen Saltonstall, who between them have seven decades of clinical experience, help readers understand arthritis and give a spectrum of exercises for beginners and experts. Broken down into chapters focusing on each major joint, there are 100 classical yoga poses and numerous imaginative and physiologically sound adapted poses, all with step-by-step instructions and easy-to-follow photo demonstrations. The authors welcome readers into the philosophy and principles of yoga and show how to use yoga to find lasting relief from arthritis. Over 400 illustrations.

Editorial Review:

What causes chronic, debilitating back pain, one of the most common--and expensive to treat--ailments in the world? According to Robin McKenzie, a New Zealand physiotherapist for over 40 years and author of the wildly popular self-help manuals Treat Your Own Back and Treat Your Own Neck, distortion of the spinal disks--either from bad posture or injury--is the cause of the pain. The magic cure is the McKenzie Method--seven very specific exercises that allow the spine to return to its natural position. But forget the doctors--McKenzie asserts that the management of your back pain is your responsibility. Practice his seven unique exercises (the book includes seven each for the back and neck) consistently and at regular intervals and just about anyone can cure his or her own back or neck pain without the help of professionals. McKenzie believes self-treatment is actually more successful than medical interventions like surgery, chiropractic, or physical therapy, and indeed, recent research does show self-treatment to be a highly effective method.

More richly detailed and in-depth than his previous books, this volume is illustrated with over 100 photos and liberally peppered with real-life case histories. Starting with an analysis of how the back and neck work, it moves on to a discussion of the common causes of pain--bad posture is most often to blame. At the core is a detailed explanation of how to do the McKenzie Method exercises, when to apply them, and how to adjust your personal program over time. Included are instructions for people who suffer with acute back and neck pain (with appropriate cautions regarding when to call a medical professional) as well as for people in special situations like pregnant women, athletes, and seniors. An impassioned introduction by coauthor Craig Kubey, a satisfied convert after suffering intense back and neck pain as a result of several auto accidents, could very well make a believer out of anyone. --Marianne Painter

Great Resource for Teachers and Students Alike 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I notice that a few reviewers have mentioned they found exercises in the book too easy and it's true that the book is geared toward those who may be recovering from injury and/or are new to yoga. That said, as a yoga instructor and long-time practitioner I've found this book to be a wonderful resource. In fact, some of the poses in the book have become staples in my lesson plans (and in my own practice) because they serve - for beginners and advanced students alike - as excellent warm-up poses to begin opening the body or cool-down poses to release the lower back. In addition, some of the poses shown using a chair or wall as a prop are useful both for beginners unable to do the full pose and (of equal importance!)for intermediate students who have experience with the full pose, but have never learned, or are still working on mastering correct points of alignment, which are integral to gaining the full benefits of the pose. Finally, I've found one set of exercises - aimed at identifying and correcting pelvic torsion (a slight - and common - misalignment in which the left hip point is drawn a bit too forward while the right is pulled back (or vice versa) - that I've found nowhere else and which has elicited a lot of positive feedback from student in classes where I've used it.

A few words to intermediate students: (1) If you're suffering back pain, it's quite likely that the Iyengar-based exercises in this book, rather than other, more "advanced" or novel asanas (poses) will prove to be better tools for dealing with it. (2) If you have a regular, committed yoga practice and it either is not mitigating or is making your back-associate pain worse you may need to take a closer look at your alignment in the poses, particularly if you began doing yoga in a vinyasa, or flow style and have never received, or have only minimal instruction on how to align yourself in different poses.(It may also be a good idea to seek the advice of a doctor.)

Although yoga studios tend to frown on mirrors in classes (for good reason), occasionally practicing in front of a mirror(s) at home - particularly with a book like this one that includes "simple" poses and poses performed seated in a chair, which can be done safely while watching yourself - can be quite helpful in identifying habitual patterns of movement of which you're unaware - many of which stem from a belief that we can go deeper into a pose than our current range of motion and/or strength allows, causing us to sacrifice key points of alignment - ultimately reinforcing the very patterns of movement that are sources of pain and discomfort. You may be (unpleasantly) surprised to find that the pictures of some of these very basic poses - ones you "already know" and have "moved beyond" - look nothing like the reflection in the mirror when you actually see yourself in the poses.

Three other superior yoga books that I suggest (and I own upwards of 30) are (1) for beginners and people with limited range of motion [i.e., lacking flexibility], "The Runner's Yoga Book" by Jean Couch (2) for intermediate students "30 Essential Yoga Poses" by Judith Lasater and (3) for advanced students, teachers and anyone who wants a thorough physiological and anatomical understanding of the mechanics of yoga, "Anatomy of Hatha Yoga", by H. David Coulter.

Editorial Review:

Back Care Basics offers the low-cost solution for back care in the new millenium: therapeutic yoga. Dr. Schatz's approach to back rehabilitation is gentle, effective, and without drugs or surgery. Her program encourages both positive health practices and a positive outlook; the important tools needed for prevention and healing. Dr. Schatz has designed this program to help those with pain from chronic musculoskeletal back and neck strain, spinal arthritis, osteoporosis, premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, and scoliosis. Simple and practical ways to heal the back, restructure the body, and cope with stress are taught so that one becomes more sensitive to early warning signs of an impending "back attack" and what to do to ward it off.

The most practical book! 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I highly recommend this book to whoever wants to understand the mechanics of the pelvis, and identify pelvic imbalances and increase awareness of the pelvis to the rest of the body, especially for physical therapists, structural bodyworkers, and movement re-educators. The author guides the reader through step by step instruction to increase awareness of body landmarks, movement, breath, and holding patterns with well-described sentences and lots of helpful illustrations.

By understanding the relationship between sitz-bones, tail bone, pubes, anterior iliac spine, femur, spine, organ, and breath, the application of this book is tremendous.
My "seeing" skill (structural assessment) is significantly enhanced and identifying muscular and movement imbalances have become much clearer and easier.
I am grateful that Eric Franklin wrote this book because I am able to help my clients with leg length discrepancy, lower back pain, foot pain, knee pain, hip pain, poor posture with a clearer understanding of mechanics, structure and movement.

Editorial Review:

Combining scientific principles with movement and imagery exercises that are both effective and fun, this book demonstrates how to create a stronger body by toning the pelvic floor. Focusing on the biomechanics of the pelvic floor, which acts as a support for the inner organs and contains a passage for the urethra, the sex organs, and the rectum, this guide shows how the pelvic floor plays an important role in almost all movements, balance, and body posture. The exercises train the muscles and joints and improve the tone of the organs, thereby increasing energy flow, eliminating incontinence, and keeping sexual organs healthy. The mind-body techniques are used to increase awareness of this part of the body and to improve sexual stamina.

On a roll 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A couple of months ago, I met up with a friend who is quite a physical guy, but in the last 10 years, his age was catching up with him, as is mine, both of us just being over 60. While we were talking, I noticed how lovely and clear his skin was, with a glow to him. When we went outside, I saw he'd lost his bloat. He is a muscular solid guy, but like many of us, he had a fullness around his middle. I tapped him on the belly, and remarked that he'd lost some weight. "Yes" he said, "I've been doing five Tibetan exercises" and said he'd be doing them the rest of his life. Knowing him, I know that he will. So he told me about the book, which I then ordered from Amazon, as well as book 2.
I've been doing the exercises, or rites going into my 4th week. I feel great. It had been months since I'd been doing a regular workout and I had become rather soft, with a little roll around my waist. Had dimples in my knees and thighs. Being about 10 or so pounds overweight didn't help either. Now I look forward to doing the rites, and am at 11 repetitions. My sugar (cookies) addiction has fallen away as well as dimples. Even my roll has lessened. Actually the rites have spurred me on to do 3 other exercises which I used to do before. One is the Pliaz which is great for circulation and tightening the thighs, plus one for the roll and sometimes squats. Just because I feel like it!
This is an easy to read book, with pictures of the 5 exercises, with explanations.
I'm looking forward to increasing vitality and tone, as well as the mental/emotional benefits of feeling great.

Editorial Review:

Legend has it that hidden in the remote reaches of the Himalayan mountains lies a secret that would have saved Ponce de Leon from years of fruitless searching. There, generations of Tibetan monks have passed down a series of exercises with mystical, age-reversing properties. Known as the Tibetan Rites of Rejuvenation or the Five Rites, these once-secret exercises are now available to Westerners in Ancient Secret of the Fountain Of Youth. Peter Kelder's book begins with an account of his own introduction to the rites by way of Colonel Bradford, a mysterious retired British army officer who learned of the rites while journeying high up in the Himalayas. Fountain of Youth then offers practical instructions for each of the five rites, which resemble yoga postures. Taking just minutes a day to perform, the benefits for practitioners have included increased energy, weight loss, better memory, new hair growth, pain relief, better digestion, and just feeling younger.

This book explains rotator cuff injuries and remedies in laymans terms. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was very impressed with this book as soon as I thumbed through it. The first section has diagrams and definitions of the shoulder. The anatomy and physiology are explained in grade school terms. (this is very helpful to people that are in so much pain that they can't think straight)

I have just had rotator cuff surgery and have been through physical therapy several times for rotator cuff problems. The exercises are identical to some of the exercises that the physical therapists teach us.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with rotator cuff problems, however, if your symptoms are not improving you will need to get an MRI to determine if you have tears or bone spurs.

Editorial Review:

Based entirely on research from peer-reviewed journals and randomized controlled trials, Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is a complete program to prevent and rehabilitate rotator cuff injuries for athletes and non-athletes alike. In less than 100 pages, readers will learn precisely how the rotator cuff works, what can go wrong with it, and then are guided step-by-step through an evidence-based program that takes just minutes a week to complete. Drawing from the latest rotator cuff research, Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff will be especially useful for those who have been diagnosed with either a partial or full-thickness rotator cuff tear, experience shoulder pain, do upper body weight lifting, play a sport or have a job that involves repeated arm motions above shoulder level, have been diagnosed with "impingement syndrome," or for anyone simply wanting a healthy and properly functioning rotator cuff.

if you want to learn how to relax by not doing yoga then this is the book for you! this book describes ways to relax by breathing and lying on the floor using towels and blankets to make your self more comfortable.. which seems more like a great way to fall asleep than yoga.
