I purchased about 10 books from Amazon on abs in order to compare them. This one has very high production values with thick, heavy paper and color photos, but the content is nothing special. If you're looking for a good book to help you with your abs, here's my conclusion from comparing books...


If You Want to Trim Your Waistline: You can't trim your waistline without losing fat, and you can't lose fat around your waist without losing it everywhere (focusing on a muscle group like the abdominal muscles doesn't burn fat in that location, just a little bit of fat from everywhere on the body). So, if you want to trim your waistline, skip the ab workout books and go with a good, proven overall weight loss and fitness book like Bill Phillips' Body for Life. The Abs Diet is a similar program, but like all the Men's Health publications, it advertises a 6-week transformation, which is just a little unrealistic. Plan on more like 12-24 weeks to see really noticeable changes if you are fat.

If You Want Sculpted Six-Pack Abs: If you are overweight at all, see above--you can't get a six pack while you're overweight, and you can't lose abdominal fat by doing an ab workout, so go for overall fitness. However, if you are already lean, see below.

If You Want to Strengthen or Build Your Ab Muscles: If you're trying to improve for work, play, or rehab, you might consider the following books: The Body Sculpting Bible for Abs Deluxe DVD Edition contains decently up-to-date information and tells you exactly what to do and when to do it, based on a six-week fitness course. If you're looking for a similar book with more information, you can choose from The Complete Book of Abs or The Complete Book of Core Training. The Complete Book of Abs (1998) is a little out of date in terms of its dietary/nutritional recommendations, but it focuses more on exercises that develop the external abdominal muscles (the ones you see in a six-pack), including lots of variations on leg lifts, bicycle motion, and sit-ups. It will also give you more resources for creating your own program, and, if that's what you want to do, go with this one instead of The Body Sculpting Bible. The Complete Book of Core Training (2006) focuses more on the functional body core, including internal abdominal muscles, legs, etc., and includes more trendy exercises using medicine balls, exercise balls, yoga, etc. A different sort of book is Stronger Abs and Back (1997), which was written before the current fad of selling "core training," but contains the elements of core training because it gives good functional sports-focused advice. Its dietary recommendations are out of date, but it recommends a 24-week workout plan, which is much more realistic than the 6-week plans advocated by many of the other books.

If You Have Back Pain: See your doctor, and if he prescribes abdominal/core strengthening, see above.

Abdominals are the stubborn problem area for exercisers of all fitness levels and both genders. Athletic/fitness trainers Scott Cole and Tom Seabourne belly up to the challenge of presenting the most current knowledge of how to firm and chisel the abs you've always wanted and strengthen your core for your sport and daily life.

Crunches are just one dimension of abdominal training, the authors explain. You also need whole-body training for core conditioning, strength, flexibility, and functionality. Athletic Abs presents exercises that train the abs along with their surrounding muscles, done standing, sitting, moving, and sometimes with a partner, not just the familiar on-the-back position.

The authors call their system "the next generation of abdominal training," focusing on "controlled instability": exercises that make your abdominals work harder to stabilize your body. Their exercises come from yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, and core conditioning, and run the gamut from basic to seriously advanced. All are well illustrated with photos showing different positions of each move.

Thomas Sullivan provides a clear, consise, and easy to use reference guide for anyone to use. This book not only contains actual text of some major environmental laws, but it also sites case studies and court decisions, all in an easy to read format. This book is a must for anyone dealing in environmental matters, and is a good source of reference for anyone concerned with the environment and public policy.

This Environmental Law Handbook has proven to be an invaluable resource to me as an environmental mediator and public involvement specialist. I use it constantly so that I can be technically sharp at work. It's dry reading, but very valuable! Paired with the Consensus Building Handbook by Susskind et al, it is the core of any environmental and public policy specialist.

This handbook is an essential tool to anyone in the environmental field. There are always new additions, so having a recent copy helps but it's not necessary since the environmental laws don't change that much. I would recommend getting a newer edition when a major law has passed so that the reader can understand the impact the new law will have on their community. A copy can usually be found at either the public library or a law library but there is SO MUCH information packed into this book that I highly recommend having your own copy so you can hi-light the text and bookmark the important sections that apply to your business.

No, plus my kids enjoyed the many ways on eating healthy from this book. We all want our children to be fit and healthy, but the current invasion of fast food, sugary snacks, and oversize portions are creating an epidemic of overweight, inactive, and unhealthy kids. The powerful influences of the fast-food industry, omnipresent junk food advertising, and the vicious cycle of TV, computer games, and Internet addictions only make our children more susceptible to a sedentary lifestyle and a lifetime of bad habits and obesity. Bootcamp Abs - "Hoo-yah" 5 out of 5 stars.

Bootcamp Abs is impressive well crafted edgy read that's offers probably the best nutritional advice and workout routines I've ever seen. For the past 10 weeks, I've been following the prescriptions found the book and can say I'll never pay for another gym membership or read a "fad diet" book again. At 34, I've lost 21 lbs and have reduced my 3 minute run to just under a 8 mins mile pace. I might not be ready for a marathon, but I feel great and know I'm in the best shape of my life.

One of the secrets that surprised me was that the exercises and workouts require no gym or weight lifting equipment. The exercises and the workout routines only use your body as resistance. I'm amazed the impact my own body has had on muscle development in my chest, arms, legs, and abs. All I've needed these weeks is my local workout area, running path, and self-motivation to keep me going.

My favorite part of the book is the second half of the book. It zeros in on fully explaining what good nutrition is in very practical and easy to understand ways. The author does a great job dispelling the myths of "fad diets" and stresses the importance of good "lower-GI" carbs, protein, fiber, unsaturated fats, dietary supplaments, and daily water intake. While good health is work unto itself, the book does a great job simplifying the nutritional guidance into 8 Direct Orders that when the are committed to memory are easy to follow.

Overall, the book has a good healthy dose of military edge. I enjoyed the "Hoo-yah, Yes Ma'ma/Sir!" approach the book. Every time I refer back to the book for more detail, I get inspired knowing the workouts and nutritional guidance I'm following is close if not the same as the men and women of the Marines and other armed forces. The workouts and nutritional guidelines are spot on (I can truly attest). If your serious about building a stronger body, developing better cardio, and getting those six-pack abs, Bootcamp Abs is the right way to go. Hoo-yah!
