Editorial Review:

In this shocking and sobering book, two fearless journalists directly and definitively link industrial toxins to the current rise in childhood disease and death. In the tradition of Silent Spring, Poisoned Profits is a landmark investigation, an eye-opening account of a country that prizes money over children’s health.

With indisputable data, Philip Shabecoff and Alice Shabecoff reveal that the children of baby boomers–the first to be raised in a truly “toxified” world–have higher rates of birth defects, asthma, cancer, autism, and other serious illnesses than previous generations. In piercing case histories, the authors identify the culprit as corporate pollution. Here are the stories of such places as Dickson, Tennessee, where babies were born with cleft lips and palates after landfill chemicals seeped into the water, and Port Neches, Texas, where so many graduates of a high school near synthetic rubber and chemical plants contracted cancer that the school was nicknamed “Leukemia High.”

The danger to our children isn’t just in the outside world, though. The Shabecoffs provide evidence that our homes are now infested with everything from dangerous flame retardants in crib mattresses to harmful plastic softeners in teething rings to antibiotics and arsenic in chicken–additives that are absorbed by growing and physically vulnerable kids as well as by pregnant women. Compounding the problem are chemical corporations that sabotage investigations and regulations, a government that refuses to police these companies, and corporate-hired scientists who keep pertinent secrets massaged with skewed data of their own.

Poisoned Profits also demonstrates how people are fighting back, whether through grassroots parents’ groups putting pressure on politicians, the rise of “ecotheology” in the pulpits of formerly indifferent churches, or the new “green chemistry” being practiced in labs to replace bad elements with good. The Shabecoffs also include helpful tips on reducing risks to children in how they eat and play, and in how parents clean and maintain their homes.

Powerful, unflinching, and eminently readable, Poisoned Profits is a wake-up call that is bound to inspire talk and force change.

Informative and Easy-to-Read 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a contract instructor who uses this book for an undergraduate level "Exceptional Children in the Classroom" class. I chose this text because it is practical and not as dry as Heward, another widely respected author of special education texts. Many strategies are provided for meeting the needs of students with disabilities as well as gifted students, those who are at risk, and those who are linguistically and culturally diverse.

Editorial Review:

As the practice of inclusion expands, the challenges for teachers increase. Here is everything a future teacher needs to know in order to work effectively and sensitively within increasingly diverse elementary and secondary classrooms. The authors explain how to identify children with learning problems and describe numerous tools for general education classes that will help children with disabilities, gifted and talented pupils, students who are at-risk, and culturally or linguistically diverse students improve their academic performance, better manage their behavior, and achieve greater social acceptance. Coverage includes current governmental regulations, the increasing diversity in America's classrooms, specific populations and the types of school problems they most often encounter, as well as techniques for tackling specific problems. For teaching professionals in the field of Special Education.

I thought I knew a lot about 'parenting' until I became one! I have one easy-going child that makes parenting seems like a breeze and one who is so wired and always pushing limits so far that I didn't like the person I was becoming. I was VERY frustrated and came across this book. I hate labeling so I don't like the title much, and carrying it around I wanted to put a darn book cover on it so others would not see it! The contents however are thought-provoking and profound. I never realized the slump that my son and I had gotten into... him pushing, my reacting... everything seemed negative. Things got worse before they got better. I am still reading the book and still implementing the ideas. However, I am realizing that as they say 1. My son enjoys playing with me like his live toy, 2. He always gets my attention by doing something negative.

I have implemented the strategy of noticing him when he's doing something that is not negative, and telling him I notice him in a neutral way (this way I am not giving him false praise but allowing him to see that I really DO pay attention to him). I found that alone has made a huge difference. I also realize that most of my talking to him was "don't......." which is NOT a life for the poor guy! I have stopped reacting to his inappropriate behaviors. In the book they compare it to a video game.... kids do good at video games because if the do wrong, they get an immediate consequence and there's no wiggle room (unlike mom who allows that and can be talked into/out of something), and video games always inspire kids to do better because they are always rewarded with flashing lights and whistles etc. So while I am perhaps a bit preliminary in my review, I have to say that this book is a TRUE help, especially if you are your wits end and ALL the best traditional parenting in the world is JUST NOT WORKING!

Editorial Review:

Transforming the Difficult Child brings to life a new way of shifting intense children to a solid life of success. The Nurtured Heart Approach puts a refreshing spin on both parenting and teaching and reveals new techniques and strategies that create thoroughly positive behaviors.

Either totally engrossing or terribly tedious... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet is an autobiography that you will either find totally engrossing or terribly tedious. Fortunately, I was one who was enthralled by Tammet and his incredible story.

Tammet is unusual in many ways. First, he was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome (a high level form of Autism), but not until he was 24 years old. He describes in great detail his childhood experiences and how different he was from others. Second, he is a savant with extraordinary abilities in math and languages. In fact, he is so unique that he was featured in a documentary called "Brainman," a take-off on the movie about another savant, "Rainman." And last, what makes him truly incredible is that he is able to express and explain to others how he views his world--something very difficult for people with Autism.

I found Tammet's entire story fascinating--how he sees numbers as colors and shapes, how his loving family supported this difficult but gifted child, his schooling, his journeys to other countries to teach English, the scientific studies that have been done on him and most of all, how he copes as an adult. I found it especially interesting as an educator to see how the Autistic mind works.

How very fortunate we are that Daniel Tammet was able to give us his story in Born on a Blue Day.

Editorial Review:

Born on a Blue Day is a journey into one of the most fascinating minds alive today -- guided by the owner himself. Daniel Tammet is virtually unique among people who have severe autistic disorders in that he is capable of living a fully independent life and able to explain what is happening inside his head.

He sees numbers as shapes, colors, and textures, and he can perform extraordinary calculations in his head. He can learn to speak new languages fluently, from scratch, in a week. In 2004, he memorized and recited more than 22,000 digits of pi, setting a record. He has savant syndrome, an extremely rare condition that gives him the most unimaginable mental powers, much like those portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in the film Rain Man.

Fascinating and inspiring, Born on a Blue Day explores what it' s like to be special and gives us an insight into what makes us all human -- our minds.

Start your new family out right and truly enjoy your children!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this book with both my children; implementing the guidelines as soon as they were born. I cannot recommend it enough!!!! Our children thrived off the predictable routine and maximum sleep time. They were fantastic sleepers and still are. At ages 7 and 4 both children have been sleeping (in their own beds) from 8:30 P.M. till 8:00 A.M. without waking up since they were about 9 months old. I cannot tell you enough how great it is to have evenings to yourselves and happy children during the day. If you do exactly what is outlined in this book, you will have a success! I have recommended this book to many of my sleep deprived friends! I even acted as a sounding board to them when they wanted to cave and slip back into old habits. But because they too stuck with it, their children are now fantastic sleepers. Read this book!!!! Get your life back!!!

What an excellent tool! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent tool for children having diffiulties controlling their emotions. The visual thermometer and the "social story" makes it very helpful to assist these children to learn how to respond to their feelings/emotions more appropriately. My four year old likes to look at his thermometer and read the story every time he has reached a "5". It's been very helpful for him.

Great for all kids, helpful for parents and teachers 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a really cute book for kids who worry. It is not real meaty but the concept is great. It helps them put worry into perspective and gives a scale to help prioritize worries.

Works great for my 4 yr. old 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I used this book with my barely 4 year old (developmentally normal) who has 'anger management' issues that originate with anxiety. There are pages in the book that we were able to write or draw pictures of how he felt. The scale of 1 (calm and safe) to 5 (out of control) was a concept that he grasped right away. He is getting better and better at recognizing when he's getting worried before he gets to a 5. If he does lose control and melts down, just the verbal cue "what number are you at" or asking him to calm down and try to get back to a 1 or 2, and he immediately starts to use his strategies - deep breathing, squeezing hands, thinking happy thoughts. I love this book.

This simple book has helped explain to family, friends and teacher the way to connect with an aspergers child. To the very intelligent nine year old with aspergers it has been a great help in his own understanding and, a relief that communication with those who have read it has improved.

Full Of Humorous Pictures & Expressions on AS! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

At first, I just wondered why cats appear in this book because I wasn't quite sure what cats had to do with Asperger Syndrome. But, on second thought, Kathy Hoopmann might help parents with AS kids increase their understanding. Even adults with AS are sure to see what AS is like because she illustrated AS not only by words but pictures! We can't put down this book just because it's for kids only!
If possible, I'd have liked her to explain in advance why she associated cats with AS.

Editorial Review:

All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome takes a playful look at Asperger Syndrome (AS), drawing inspiration from the feline world in a way that will strike a chord with all those who are familiar with AS.
Delightful color photographs of cats bring to life familiar characteristics such as sensitive hearing, scampering at the first sign of being stroked and particular eating habits.
Touching, humorous and insightful, this book evokes the difficulties and joys of raising a child who is different and leaves the reader with a sense of the dignity, individuality and potential of people with AS.
This engaging book is an ideal, gentle introduction to the world of AS.

This Book Was God's Gift to Us...! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My now 12 yo son was discovered to have dyslexia, just 2 years ago (after years of frustration in trying numerous "how to read" approaches, to no avail). He was homeschooled from the beginning, and though I'd successfully taught his older siblings to read, this kid stumped me... every attempt to teach him (no matter what methodology was used), resulted in both of us dissolving into tears of frustration and despair...

We tried some traditional/professional approaches -- no results. We eschewed the labels, having gone down that dismal route with our eldest son (language delays), who is now carrying a 4.0 in college.

Anyway, the breakthrough for us, was discovering this practical, hands-on book -- I came to see and understand (& believe) that it's not a disability at all -- it's an incredible gift based on innate, insatiable curiosity (even in infancy), and incredible multi-dimensional perception skills. It enables children to see the "other side" of objects, with their "mind's eye".

Most dyslexic children are inordinately bright. Some famous dyslexics in history have been Michaelangelo, Thomas Edison, and Einstein. Their ability to see "all sides of an object at once" enabled them to do extraordinary feats. Michaelangelo could "see" the image of David in that block of marble, and knew how to "get him out" of it.

The problem comes in when a dyslexic child tries to do a "mere human" feat, such as reading. Letters on a page are two-dimensional, and yet the child's insatiably curious mind wants to see what that "E" looks like on the "other side"... the mind's eye will go there, which causes an image of the letters to either "dance" on the page, or spin, or else swap places with each other.

My son learned, from some easy exercises in this book, to "re-orient" his mind's eye -- to "lock it into place" in the back of his head, thereby aligning his mind's eye, with his natural eyes... so that both of them were focused on the same thing (the "E") at the same time. He can "unlock" that orientation at will, enabling him to do whatever tasks God had in mind when He gave him this particular gift.

It's hugely liberated my son, given him a true sense of being unique (rather than defective), and given him the confidence he needed to tackle reading.

One day, within a month of so of having discovered how to "re-orient", he picked up a 300 page novel, and devoured it in 3 days...! This was the same kid who would dissolve into tears, when he couldn't get through a paragraph, only weeks previously.

I don't know how many more "disabilities" are really just misdiagnosed gifts, but I'll bet God does... I'll bet He knows how to enable us to meet our children where they are, and to discover just what He had in mind when He created each of our unique children.

My son has morphed into a reading-fanatic...! As I type, he's lying on his bed, devouring yet another thick book -- he cannot get enough; it's as if he's making up for lost time. As a homeschooling/unschooling mom of 8 kids, I've learned that a desire to read is the greatest educational resource at their disposal. I've gone from hopeless despair over this son, to incredible hope and joy...!

I really don't care how scientifically accurate this approach is -- I've found it to be incredibly fruitful. In my experience, the scientifically-backed methods were found wanting. This method opened up my son's world! I'm grateful, and I see this method as a Gift from God.

Shalom, Dena
