Editorial Review:

Finally a social skills program that covers all the bases!

Whether it's learning how long one can look at somebody without being accused of staring; how to shift topics, despite one's desire to stick with that all-consuming special interest; how to say no to peer pressure; or dealing with a sensitive topic - it's all here...and more. In this comprehensive and user-friendly book, the author translates years of experience working with students with Asperger Syndrome and social-communication difficulties. After brief introductory chapters on skills to target, instructional strategies, behavior management, promoting generalization, etc., as well as a special chapter by Brenda Smith Myles on relevant characteristics of autism spectrum disorders, the reader is presented with the essence of this must-have resource: 70 of the skills that most commonly cause difficulty for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and social-communication problems. The presentation of each skill consists of a reproducible skill handout, as well as activity sheets listing ways teachers and parents can demonstrate, practice, and reinforce the skill in the classroom and at home. A concluding chapter on promoting peer acceptance offers sensitivity training programs for both students of various age groups and school staff, making this a complete social skills training package for students of all ages.

Like The Wire except with real people! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

You'd think that if you watched The Wire this won't have anything you don't already know, and you'd be about 70% right. Long and sometimes pedantic, but the characters are all real and the book lets the authors get deeper into their heads; worth a read if you're a Wire junkie. (And if you're not a Wire junkie, this will all be new to you anyway. ...but you might as well start by watching the show. Thank me later.)

Not for everyone but great for those seeking a different view 5 out of 5 stars.

I've lived in Baltimore my entire life. Well to be fair. near Baltimore. I found this a compelling and interesting look at a social epidemic. For those of us that don't understand addiction or the situation in the inner cities first hand this is a mind blowing and outlook changing look at the situation from the side of those that live it every day. This series changed my entire outlook. If you like this try watching 'The Wire' and 'Homicide: Life on the Street'

Good information but sexist 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed the information in the book, extremely helpful for getting your family on track nutritionally. I was very disappointed in a book written in 2006 reinforcing such rigid gender stereotypes. In the food shopping with your kids section, Dr. Sears tells his son that "the dark green one will help you run really fast." he then tells his daughter that "it will give you prettier hair and sharper eyes." Come on! This is ridiculous! It's the 21st century and we still have people telling our boys to be strong and our girls to be pretty?! I would expect better from Dr. Sears.

Best for you & Your Family / Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood... 5 out of 5 stars.

I first read this book from our local library. Loved it so much - I bought it as a reference. It is packed with life changing easy to read information to improve your and your family's food habits. A good portion of American health problems stems from our use of processed and trans fat laden foods. What can we do to make changes to give our families a better chance at life? We do not have to buy and feed our families this junk! Read the book to learn how to reverse damage and improve your and your family's health. Your gut will thank you. Behaviors will improve or will be eliminated in ADD children by improving nutrition. Read for scientific basis.
Debunking fad diets Dr. Sears (with support from many other Dr. Sears), informs reader of a healthy life change of eating. This does not mean removing the joy of eating. But it does offer ways to reduce risk of cancer, diabetes etc. This book also includes 11 ways to feed growing brains - a must for all parents! Very good informative reading!! Thank you Dr. Sears and family! Happy reading.

Editorial Review:

Most children are afraid of the dark. Some fear monsters under the bed. But 10 percent of children have excessive fears and worries--phobias, separation anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder--that can hold them back and keep them from fully enjoying childhood. If your child suffers from any of these forms of anxiety, the program in this book offers practical, scientifically proven tools that can help.

Now in its second edition, Helping Your Anxious Child has been expanded and updated to include the latest research and techniques for managing child anxiety. You'll learn how to help your child overcome intense fears and worries and find out how to relieve anxious feelings while parenting with compassion.

  • Help your child practice "detective thinking" to recognize irrational worries
  • What to do when your child becomes frightened
  • How to gently and gradually expose your child to challenging situations
  • Help your child learn important social skills

A FosterAdoption Necessity 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

How I wish I had read this book to use 9 years ago with our two beautiful special needs adopted children. Very practical, useful, powerful tools to build attachment, navigate through the muddy waters of behavior crises, counselling, schools, and extended family. Useful for kids under 12, a bit light on legal advice that can become extremely critical as adolescent storms hit.
Encouraging, humorous, touching. It should be required at adoption prep classes for any child.

Editorial Review:

Newly updated and expanded, this book is power packed with parenting techniques for guiding challenging children back on track! Part I includes understanding Reactive Attachment Disorder, it's causes and symptoms. Part II has the solutions! Praised by parents throughout the world as saving their sanity and their families. Used by many agencies and professionals to train parents to help emotionally disturbed youth. If you want to make a difference in the life of a hurting child this clear, focused plan will do it.

Every parent of an AS child needs to read this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. It reinforced what I already knew about AS, and added a wealth of knowledge that I have found invaluable. The strategies and tips are great. I've used them many times now...and they work!!! It was such a relief when I read this book and learned that other parents go through the exact same thing I have been going through with my son. This author really knows what she is writing about, and you can tell it is from her own personal experiences. I recommend this book to anyone who has a child they even suspect of having some type of developmental disorder.

Editorial Review:

For parents of children with Asperger Syndrome ordinary parenting just doesn't always do it - AS kids need a different approach. Brenda is mother to thirteen-year-old Kenneth, author of Asperger Syndrome, the Universe and Everything, and since his diagnosis at the age of eight she has gathered together the parenting ideas and tips that have had a positive effect on Kenneth's life. Brenda discusses parents' reaction to their child's AS and gives advice on how better to understand 'Planet Asperger'. This book helps parents to respond positively to the challenge of AS and find the 'treasure' in their child's way of being.

Great GF/CF recipe source! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I recommend this book for the GF/CF recipes. My only problem with the book was there were typos, apparently not proofread very well for spelling. If you want more in depth reasoning behind the diet, I suggest the book Unraveling the Mystery of Autism... by Karyn Seroussi.

Great starting place! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was the first book I read before starting the GFCF diet. It gave a ton of information. Some easy to understand, some, I hate to admit, went over my head unless I really had the opportunity to concentrate! The one thing I strongly disagree with is the assertion that this diet is not much more expensive than what you're spending now in cow's milk, etc. It totally is- even if you bake from scratch. All the specialty flours, etc. really add up. The switch to rice milk is a bleep on the checkbook balance compared to the switch to gluten free cooking and eating.
All in all, I'm very happy with this book. Some recipes are better than others, but the wealth of over all information in this book is great. I would definitely do a search for better prices, though! I found it for around $30.

Easy to use and understand resource 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

When my sons ages 6 and 5 were diagnosed with sensory integration disorder I had no idea what in the world that was, or what it meant for my boys. Enter this handy book that answered so many of my questions. The lists and tips given are easy to understand-written for "real people" not those with doctorates in educational theory :)I have gone to this book again and again since purchasing it. If your child, or children you know or work with, has been diagnosed with sensory processing problems, this guide is a definitive answer for you! You can quickly and easily identify problem areas. I highly recommend this guide for those asking questions that seemingly have no answers.

Editorial Review:

In this elegant approach to the often-elusive subject of sensory integration, Carol Kranowitz, M.A. (author of the best selling book The Out-of-Sync Child), and expert occupational therapists Stacey Szklut, MS, OTR/L and Dr. Lynn Blazer-Martin, Ph.D, OTR, plus other leading experts have assembled an extensive and easy-to-use set of checklists and other tools that will be invaluable to every teacher and parent who has children with sensory integration challenges.

WARNING: ONLY READ THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY FORCED TO! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I'm sorry for having such a negative comment but after reading this book, I thought, "WHY WOULD ANYONE WANNA READ THIS?" My mind began wandering off after reading just the 2nd page. I certainly do not believe that this book is for children younger than 12, especially if you have no historical knowledge of the background of this story. I think that adults would enjoy this book much more than a child or a student. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

I think that the main reason I did not enjoy this book was the way that Marguerite de Angeli worded or wrote this book, such as the way that she used the terms, 'twill and thee. Who uses those words anymore?

-THIS WAS WRITTEN FROM A 12 YEAR OLDS PERSPECTIVE OF THE BOOK.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

The spirited child--often called "difficult" or "strong-willed"--
can easily overwhelm parents, leaving them feeling frustrated and inadequate.Spirited kids are, in fact, simply "more"--by temperament, they are more intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and uncomfortable with change than the average child. Through vivid examples and a refreshingly positive viewpoint, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka offers parents emotional support and proven strategies for handling their spirited child. Raising Your Spirited Child will help you:

  • Understand your child's--and your own--temperamental traits
  • Plan for success with a simple four-step program
  • Discover the power of positive--rather than negative--labels
  • Cope with tantrums and blowups when they do occur
  • Develop strategies for handling mealtimes, bedtimes, holidays, school and many other situations

Filled with personal insight and authorative advice, Raising Your Spirited Child can help make parenting the joy it should be, rather than the trial it can be.
