Disappointed 3 out of 5 stars.

I was a little disappointed with this cookbook. I think most of the recipes are pretty generic as they call for all of the 'normal' ingredients of the recipes, but just add "gluten-free" to the title of the ingredient. It wouldn't take a genius to take already used recipes and convert them to GF just by substituting the ing. I don't know exactly what I was expecting but this wasn't it....

Not Too Hot 2 out of 5 stars.

I thought this book would give quick easy Gluten free meals....I gave me quick meals that were typical junk foods (Kids foods) that were Gluten free versions....thats not what I cook for my children. More pictures would have been nice too....Gluten free foods often look different than regluar foods....I guess thats why pictures were excluded!!!!!!!!!

Helpful 4 out of 5 stars.

After being frustrated and watching my daughter start to fail I was finally able to convince teachers that she had a problem with add, just because your daughter is not bouncing off the walls doesn't meant there isn't a problem. This book help me to explain many painful experiences so that the staff was able to finally step in and help. My daughter is now in excelled classes, not on meds and yes we still have our interesting days but we are able to handle them better. Our social worker used this book to give an inservice during the summer. Teachers are often taught to identify boys who cause problems as add candidates. Girls who are day dreamers or chatty cathys are overlooked, and often highly intelligent children mimic add qualities, and are just 'hardwired' differenly, they can be seen as challenging authority and problems, too often used as tutors to their classmates, when they get home is when they have a melt down, but being people pleasers somehow hold it together all day at school and save it for mom. Get the book! It saved our family.

Editorial Review:

A ground-breaking book on the needs and issues of girls with attentional problems: why they are often undiagnosed, how they are different from boys, and what their special needs are in school, in their social world and at home. Age-related checklists from pre-school to high school help parents and professionals better identify and help girls with AD/HD.

Just what I needed 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Right after I got the autism diagnosis for my son I realized that behavioral therapy would be our main focus of treatment and due to financial constraints, I would be the primary therapist.

After reading some really heady and intellectual literature on behavioral therapy I just wanted to scream, "Yes, I know, but tell me what to do!!"

A Work in Progress does just that. It is simply written and easy to use. Look up the behavior you wish to address in the table of contents, turn to the indicated page, and there, clearly written is a step-by-step plan. Brilliant. Just what we needed.

A work in progress 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in behaviorism or anyone who knows a child on the Austic Spectrum.
If this topic isn't your cup of tea, then there's no reason for you to be interested in this book, but if you are into this sort of thing, it's amazing.

Required reading for any child "labeled" ADD or ADHD or any Teacher! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is incredible. All of my child's teachers wanted me to drug her to keep her in their style of learning "box". After reading this book, I found many tips and tricks to deal with her visual learning style and also it helped me to realize just how special she is!! It can be difficult raising a child who has been labeled ADHD but this book makes you realize how luck you are to have such a special child and that it isn't a bad thing, it's just different!

This book should be required reading for ALL teachers and administrators!!

Required Reading 5 out of 5 stars.

I was treated to a presentation at our school by Mr. Freed. I was so moved by his eloquent explanations of children I see every day in my classroom, year after year. I am a middle school teacher who is presented with children who for years have been misunderstood, and untaught because of a lack of knowledge concerning their abilities, not disabilities. Simply understanding the concept of a right-brained child is tremendously insightful for any teacher, but should be required reading for any teacher of language arts and math. It has opened my eyes, mind and heart to my astounding students.

Editorial Review:

Requiring only ten minutes a day, the program revealed in this groundbreaking book provides an effective, step-by-step method for helping children with Attention Deficit Disorder develop their special skills and individual learning styles and excel in a classroom setting.

Aspergers Syndrome Emotional difficulties 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

An excellent book, good practical advice. A must for anyone involved with teaching a child with Aspergers Syndrome. The first few chapters breakdown in simple talk what Aspergers People have the most difficulties with. It points out the areas that are considered "normal" for Aspergers syndrome, and that your child is not the only child having these difficulties. I found this particularly useful to show to teachers and principals who are either too busy or lack the inclination to learn about the Syndrome.

The next part of the book explains the rage process, what to look out for, where the teaching zones are and where it is best left until the child has calmed down.

The latter stage of the book gives solutions to the issues that result in Tantrums and meltdowns.

A must for anyone teaching Aspergers children and a great help to parents.

Editorial Review:

This long-awaited expanded edition of this bestselling book offers parents and professionals alike true-and-tried solutions to minimize and circumvent the often frightening circumstances that surround the rage cycle – for the child with Asperger Syndrome as well as others in the environment. In addition to almost doubling the section on interventions, this highly practical and user-friendly must-have resource also focuses on the behaviors and reactions of the adults around the child going through the stages of the rage cycle and emphasizes the importance of utilizing the teachable moments before and after a rage episode.

Editorial Review:

Lois Lowry's magnificent novel of the distant future, The Giver, is set in a highly technical and emotionally repressed society. This eagerly awaited companion volume, by contrast, takes place in a village with only the most rudimentary technology, where anger, greed, envy, and casual cruelty make ordinary people's lives short and brutish. This society, like the one portrayed in The Giver, is controlled by merciless authorities with their own complex agendas and secrets. And at the center of both stories there is a young person who is given the responsibility of preserving the memory of the culture--and who finds the vision to transform it.

Kira, newly orphaned and lame from birth, is taken from the turmoil of the village to live in the grand Council Edifice because of her skill at embroidery. There she is given the task of restoring the historical pictures sewn on the robe worn at the annual Ruin Song Gathering, a solemn day-long performance of the story of their world's past. Down the hall lives Thomas the Carver, a young boy who works on the intricate symbols carved on the Singer's staff, and a tiny girl who is being trained as the next Singer. Over the three artists hovers the menace of authority, seemingly kind but suffocating to their creativity, and the dark secret at the heart of the Ruin Song.

With the help of a cheerful waif called Matt and his little dog, Kira at last finds the way to the plant that will allow her to create the missing color--blue--and, symbolically, to find the courage to shape the future by following her art wherever it may lead. With astonishing originality, Lowry has again created a vivid and unforgettable setting for this thrilling story that raises profound questions about the mystery of art, the importance of memory, and the centrality of love. Great find! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am so happy to have found this book. I have been making the quick breads for my boys (one of which is allergic to peanuts, wheat, soy, egg, and milk). I have been making the breads into mini muffins to take the place of snack crackers, etc. THey love them. I also used the zuccini brownies for their (twin boys) birthday cake. It was great. Thanks so much for sharing your recipes!

Disappointed 3 out of 5 stars.

I was so excited about this book. My 13 month son has food sensitivities to wheat for sure, and we avoid soy, nuts, dairy and eggs. Therefore, it is hard to find things that he can eat--I am trying to be as creative as possible. I have tried 3 recipes from this book and not one has turned out well. The oatmeal muffins were flat and doughy and the oatmeal pancakes were the same. The porcupine meatball recipe needs to denote that brown rice should not be used, because even after cooking them for 1 hour, the rice was not cooked. I will try another recipe, but so far have been disappointed. I am finding that allergy free cooking is almost impossible to do and taste good.

Changed our life! 5 out of 5 stars.

We adopted a son with RAD and worked with an attachment therapist. Adopting the methods in this book made an enormous difference in our lives! Don't hesitate if you are considering this book!

Heartwrenching and powerful 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent book! A must-read for anyone who works with children. It includes information that I believe anyone around children can utilize. Great information on how to deal with children who have been traumatized but it also has important information about parenting in general and helps us understand how children see the world.

Editorial Review:

Building the Bonds of Attachment is the second edition of a critically and professionally acclaimed book for social workers, therapists, and parents who strive to assist poorly attached children. This work is a composite case study of the developmental course of one child following years of abuse and neglect. This work focuses on both the specialized psychotherapy and parenting that is often necessary in facilitating a child's psychological development and attachment security. It blends attachment theory and research, and trauma theory with general principles of both parenting and child and family therapy in developing a model for intervention. This work is a practical guide for the adult--whether professional or parent--who endeavor to help such children.

Disorganized but some good information 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book has good information, but the format is very hard to follow. With the help of a good editor, I think the authors have valuable things to share that could benefit parents and professionals working with children who have feeding difficulties. The format alone made me close the book after 20 minutes and return it to Amazon. Too bad, because the authors have a lot of experience with putting these ideas into practice with real-life children.

Good book especially for children with aversion to eating 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book talks more about the environment and social issues dealing with food. I was looking more for techniques to try with my 2 year old that doesn't like to eat solid foods...this book is more for 3 or 4 years old and older. Still a good reference for older children.

EXCELLENT! 5 out of 5 stars.

I WISH I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS BOOK A LOOONG TIME AGO! RECOMMENDED BY OUR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST, IT'S GREAT FOR PARENTS WHO HAVE CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES! A MUST FOR NEW PARENTS, BECAUSE EARLY INTERVENTION IS THE KEY!! EASY TO READ, VERY INFORMATIVE, GREAT TO GO BACK & REFERENCE!!
PROUD PARENT OF A 6YR OLD WITH AUTISM!

Editorial Review:

"Just Take a Bite" takes parents and professionals step by step through he myths about eating to the complexity of eating itself, which leads to an understanding of physical, neurological and/or psychological reason why children may not be eating as they should.

Editorial Review:

Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development is alternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatric psychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. Although pharmacological treatment is not the book's focus, there is a chapter on drug therapies. --Richard Farr
