Editorial Review:

Realizing the College Dream with Autism or Asperger Syndrome is both a practical and a personal account of one ASD student's successful experience of going to college.
This accessible book focuses on how to get there and stay there: deciding to go, how to get in and how to get the most out of it. Ann Palmer advises parents and professionals how to prepare the student for the transition from school and home life to a new environment and educational challenge, and how to support them through potential problems such as academic pressure, living away from home, social integration and appropriate levels of participation in college. She offers helpful strategies that will encourage and inspire parents and students and show that college can be a suitable option for students with an autism spectrum disorder, as well as the basis for a successful independent life later.
This book is essential reading for any parent considering college as an option for their child, disability service providers in colleges and for ASD students themselves.

Editorial Review:

More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes, and cancer...combined.

In Autism and the God Connection, William Stillman presented extraordinary accounts of spiritual giftedness in autistic children and adults, persons often deemed intellectually inferior.

Now, in The Soul of Autism, Stillman shows:

* Why the unaccountable and dramatic rise in autism--with no single known cause--is a necessary part of our spiritual evolution.

* The secret component that makes autistic telepathy possible for us all, and how we can learn to use it.

* How certain autistics communicate with animals and how what the animals are saying is pertinent to the rest of us.

* How anyone can tap into the multi-sensory giftedness possessed by many autistic children and adults.

We have much to learn from our autistic friends about transcendence rising, a new humanity accessible for all. The Soul of Autism illuminates the way.

Editorial Review:

Rich with clinical insights, this volume reviews the state of the science of identifying and treating autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in very young children. Leading authorities examine critical research issues and present innovative approaches to assessing social, cognitive, adaptive, communication, and sensory-motor impairments in the first two years of life. Providing a comprehensive discussion of developmental, behavioral, and medical intervention models, the book also addresses ways to support families in coping with an early ASD diagnosis and becoming effective advocates for their children. A special chapter discusses popular but controversial treatments, including how to help families make informed decisions about their use.

LOVE THIS BOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I love this book because it's short enough that the teachers will actually read it, and practical enough that they will actually use it. We have given a copy of the book to each of my son's teachers every year - it is a critical part of laying the foundation for good communication for the school year, and for helping the teachers see and understand his behavior in the right context. I would highly recommend this book!

Editorial Review:

As awareness of Asperger Syndrome (AS) grows, it becomes increasingly important that all professionals have a familiarity with and understanding of the condition. However, for teachers, who have minimal spare time, it is difficult to access the details they need for working with AS children without wading through extensive books aimed at parents and professionals. Asperger Syndrome What Teachers Need to Know bridges this gap and is the ideal starting point for teachers wishing to learn about Asperger Syndrome and how best to work with and get the most from a child with an ASD. Providing a summary of currently available information on AS and covering all the key issues that will concern teachers (e.g. social skills, homework, playground behavior, assisting with study), Matt Winter, a teacher himself, imparts tips and practical ideas that he has found successful and invaluable for anyone working in a school environment.

Editorial Review:

Picture a childhood void of the joyful images and sensations we associate with play--a childhood lacking in curiosity, diversity and symbolic meaning--a childhood without playmates or friends. Children on the autism spectrum are among those who face serious challenges learning how to play in both social and imaginative ways.

But no longer do these children have to remain lost souls on the fringes of playgrounds and other social gathering places. In Peer Play and the Autism Spectrum: The Art of Guiding Children's Socialization and Imagination, Pamela Wolfberg turns her award-winning research into a practical manual for practitioners and caregivers seeking to address the unique and complex challenges children on the autism spectrum experience.

This practical guide offers an introduction to the basic principles, tools and techniques that comprise the Integrated Play Groups model, designed to support children of diverse ages and abilities on the autism spectrum (novice players) in mutual play experiences with typical peers and siblings (expert players). Small groups of children regularly play together under the guidance of an adult facilitator (play guide) through a carefully tailored system of support. The emphasis is on maximizing children's developmental potential as well as intrinsic desire to play, socialize and form meaningful relationships with peers. At the same time, an equally important focus is on teaching the peer group to be more accepting, responsive and inclusive of children who relate and play in different ways. This innovative book is full of forms, checklists and other tools to facilitate implementation.

There is a comprehensive checklist to be used as an assessment of skills and as a method of creating goals for individual students. There are concrete strategies broken down into simple steps for using visuals, video modeling, peer play and natural occurring situations to facilitate social skills learning. Reproducible worksheets to reinforce these skills are also included for easy implementation. This great new resource will help parents and professionals get started teaching social skills right away!

Editorial Review:

Having successfully used yoga to combat the stress of their own busy lives, Dion and Stacey Betts discovered its potential for their son Joshua, who has Asperger Syndrome.
This fully-illustrated book combines the authors' professional expertise with their experience of parenting, offering a range of gentle and fun yoga positions and breathing techniques that are effective in dealing with the increased levels of anxiety, disorientation and tactile sensitivity often found in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs).

Yoga for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders is ideal for parents and caregivers who want to use simple yoga techniques to help children with ASDs overcome some of the symptoms of the disorder.

Asperger's Understood, Applied for Adolescents 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This is a great Asperger's book for counselors, family and especially teenagers. It covers the whole spectrum of symptoms and treatment and focuses on the sexual questions that a teenager or young adult might not feel free to discuss. It is respectful of their natural sexuality and the problems that may arise out of their inability to find release for their sexual desires. It is a reassuring and positive book about life's full potential for those suffering from this often undiagnosed developmental disorder. A great addition to the wide spectrum of books on Aspergers.

Editorial Review:

Playing the dating game is often tricky: all the more so for individuals with Asperger's Syndrome. How do AS adolescents and their families cope with sexual feelings and behaviour? What help can be given if a man with AS oversteps the mark in expressing his sexuality? How do people with AS deal with intimacy and communication in sexual relationships? In this comprehensive and unique guide, Isabelle Henault delivers practical information and advice on issues ranging from puberty and sexual development, gender identity disorders, couples' therapy to guidelines for sex education programs and maintaining sexual boundaries. This book will prove indispensable to parents, teachers, counsellors and individuals with AS themselves.
