My 7 Year Old Aspie LOVES this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My son and I love this book. The stories and photos are highly relevant, and some make my son laugh. He loves to see how the children do the "wrong" thing and then the "right" way, and finds the wrong way highly amusing. HIGHLY recommended!

Awesome for Asperger's Kids 5 out of 5 stars.

It's a "Must have"-Great book for teaching an autistic child 4 out of 5 stars.

This social skills picture book is instrumental in helping my son learn every day life skills through pictures. I borrowed it from a friend and began using it with him. When she asked me to return it, I decided I needed one too. It keeps my son engaged for at least 20-30 minutes at a time and he is communicating with me through questions and giving answers. I have a lot of books and there are none that quite match up to this one. It's a "must have".

Editorial Review:

A dynamic teaching tool for children with autism or Asperger's Syndrome, "The Social Skills Picture Book" offers pictures of the right and wrong ways to handle nearly 30 social skills, such as conversation, play, emotion, management, and empathy.

Gives You the Scoop on Pee and Poop 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I have a six-year-old with Autism who is yet to be potty trained. I was beside myself until I purchased this manual. Now, I understand more about his point of view when it comes to learning this new task. I was perplexed by his ability to control his bladder and bowel, but his unwillingness to use the toilet. It never occurred to me that using the bathroom could cause anxiety or that I needed to provide a calm and relaxing atmosphere for him while he was on the toilet.

What I like most about this book is that it gives you not only an overview but solutions and ideas for making a very important milestone in your child's life possible. Any parent of a child with learning disabilities wants their child to be able to assimilate into society as much as possible. This book helps to knock down one more wall standing in the way of social acceptance.

Editorial Review:

Individuals with autism are reportedly one of the most difficult populations to toilet train. This second edition offers effective strategies that take the child's physical and emotional sensitivities into account instead of trying to force traditional methods. Easy-to-read bulleted lists offer more than 200 do's and don'ts, along with over 50 real-life examples, to help make the process more of a lesson and less of a battle for all involved. The young trainee will learn to overcome fear of the bathroom, properly use toilet paper, flush once, wash hands, and more. The toilet trainer will learn how to overcome challenges caused by communication needs, sensory sensitivities, motor challenges, anxiety levels, etc.

Insight into behavior and learning 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed skipping around through this book instead of reading it in a linear fashion, for the way the book is written suits this way. If you are not familiar with Temple's work, by all means buy Thinking in Pictures. It is not just a great personal story, but speaks to me about the importance of visual literacy and thinking about the world in other ways.

This book is more of an advice/observation book about coping with autism and an autistic child, but a lot of the advice is no-nonsense advice for any of us.

Editorial Review:

In this innovative book, Dr. Temple Grandin gets down to the REAL issues of autism, the ones parents, teachers, and individuals on the spectrum face every day. Temple offers helpful do's and don'ts, practical strategies, and try-it-now tips, all based on her "insider" perspective and a great deal of research. These are just some of the specific topics Temple delves into:

How and Why People with Autism Think Differently

Economical Early Intervention Programs that Work

How Sensory Sensitivities Affect Learning

Behaviors Caused by a Disability vs. Just Bad Behaviors

Teaching People with Autism to Live in an Unpredictable World

Alternative Medicine vs. Conventional Medicine

Employment Ideas for Adults with Autism

And many more!

PLUS an exclusive interview between world-renowned psychologist Dr. Tony Attwood and Temple Grandin!

But after years of constant effort and slow progress, the Gardners' lives were transformed when they welcomed a new member into the family, Henry, a gorgeous golden retriever puppy. The bond between Dale and his dog would change their lives ...

Every parent of an AS child needs to read this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. It reinforced what I already knew about AS, and added a wealth of knowledge that I have found invaluable. The strategies and tips are great. I've used them many times now...and they work!!! It was such a relief when I read this book and learned that other parents go through the exact same thing I have been going through with my son. This author really knows what she is writing about, and you can tell it is from her own personal experiences. I recommend this book to anyone who has a child they even suspect of having some type of developmental disorder.

Editorial Review:

For parents of children with Asperger Syndrome ordinary parenting just doesn't always do it - AS kids need a different approach. Brenda is mother to thirteen-year-old Kenneth, author of Asperger Syndrome, the Universe and Everything, and since his diagnosis at the age of eight she has gathered together the parenting ideas and tips that have had a positive effect on Kenneth's life. Brenda discusses parents' reaction to their child's AS and gives advice on how better to understand 'Planet Asperger'. This book helps parents to respond positively to the challenge of AS and find the 'treasure' in their child's way of being.

Best MTHFR synopsis I have found 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is NOT only for parents with autistic children. People who have "leaky gut" syndrome, and genetic defects associated with MTHFR NEED to get this book as a resource for understanding. Best description of leaky gut and C677 and T1298 I have found yet outside medical literature.

A wonderful overview of the way in wich our body works. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book changed my perspective, not only of autism but of the aproach I had of troubles in aging, auto-immune diseases, oxidation, aminoacids, etc. I've been looking for this information for a long time.
Gladys Roij

Editorial Review:

This book shows that autism can be treated by reducing the neurological inflammation that is part of the disease process, rather than simply masking the symptoms with drugs like Ritalin and Prozac. The authors have have seen autistic behaviors improve dramatically or disappear completely with appropriate medical treatment. The book reviews the medical literature regarding the biological nature of the disease, including the potential connection between vaccines and autism. The foreword is by Katie Wright, whose parents--Bob and Suzanne Wright--founded Autism Speaks.

Editorial Review:

Asperger Syndrome has become an increasingly common disorder. One in 300 individuals may have AS—exhibiting characteristics such as average to high intelligence, obsessive behavior, intense special interests, and difficulty dealing with everyday social situations—and it is now more prevalent than childhood cancer and Down’s syndrome.

As the mother of a boy diagnosed with AS in 1994, Barbara Kirby found scant resources and support. She developed the internationally renowned OASIS (Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support) Web site in 1995 to help other parents find the information they need. She teamed up with Patricia Romanowski Bashe, now co-owner of OASIS and herself the mother of a son with AS, to write The OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome, which has become the standout authority in the field and a must-have for this growing audience.

Now Bashe and Kirby have crafted a fully revised edition of this comprehensive resource for parents, teachers, therapists, and anyone who knows or works with someone with AS. In addition to discussing what AS looks like and how parents can guide their unique child through the social, emotional, and intellectual challenges of growing up, this edition includes new developments made in AS research over the past four years, new thinking on diagnosis and evaluation, the latest approaches to medication and social skills development, and tips on navigating the maze of interventions, therapies, and special education. The authors know firsthand the joys and frustrations of raising children with AS, and they share their own experiences as well as those of dozens of parents facing the same issues.

Filled with practical information and emotional support, this is the most complete and authoritative guide available. Whether your child has been diagnosed or troubling symptoms are just becoming apparent, this book will point you in the right direction as you face the particular challenges of loving and raising a child with Asperger Syndrome.

Aspergers Syndrome Emotional difficulties 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

An excellent book, good practical advice. A must for anyone involved with teaching a child with Aspergers Syndrome. The first few chapters breakdown in simple talk what Aspergers People have the most difficulties with. It points out the areas that are considered "normal" for Aspergers syndrome, and that your child is not the only child having these difficulties. I found this particularly useful to show to teachers and principals who are either too busy or lack the inclination to learn about the Syndrome.

The next part of the book explains the rage process, what to look out for, where the teaching zones are and where it is best left until the child has calmed down.

The latter stage of the book gives solutions to the issues that result in Tantrums and meltdowns.

A must for anyone teaching Aspergers children and a great help to parents.

Editorial Review:

This long-awaited expanded edition of this bestselling book offers parents and professionals alike true-and-tried solutions to minimize and circumvent the often frightening circumstances that surround the rage cycle – for the child with Asperger Syndrome as well as others in the environment. In addition to almost doubling the section on interventions, this highly practical and user-friendly must-have resource also focuses on the behaviors and reactions of the adults around the child going through the stages of the rage cycle and emphasizes the importance of utilizing the teachable moments before and after a rage episode.

Great Life Skills Training 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This is a great motivational book for someone on the verge of entering into adulthood. Dr. Baker pinpoints specific skills needed for a variety of "life situations" by catagorizing them and dealing with them individually. It starts out with mapping out assets and challenges. There are activity pages to use when anger is an issue and suggestions on calming ones self. The book includes a 16 page section on dating. It offers great advice for job seekers, from writing resumes to handling rejection. These are only a few of the sections found in this book. It truly is indispensable for anyone with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome. I definitely recommend this one.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive resource for students on the autism spectrum preparing for life after high school, best-selling author/counselor Dr. Jed Baker offers "life skills training" on subjects such as non-verbal cues, body language, dealing with anger, frustration and anxiety, as well as building and maintaining friendships, roommates, and intimate relationships. He focuses on conversational and employment skills, ways to balance work/school with family demands, and problematic areas such as finances, emergencies and transportation matters. The assessment tools he provides for parents and the analysis of the laws that provide accommodations to adults with disabilities are critical for success in life after high school.
