Pretending to Be Normal: Living With Asperger's Syndrome
This book is must read for anyone dealing with Asperger's children, teens and young adults. L. Wiley's insights into her own responses and feelings enables a better understanding of the behaviors we see, and also insight into some of our goals, that may not be shared by those with whom we are working.

I have now read several books by adults with autism or aspergers. This is a good book to read if you want a better understanding of the autism spectrum and how it plays out in children who otherwise appear "normal". The author describes very well what life was like for her in high school and college. She also writes about her marriage and some of the challenges in that. I believe that this is the first book I have read that goes into that type of depth of close relationships. At the end of the book she has chapters such as organizing your home life, employment options and survival skills for college students. I will probably read those chapters again and in more depth when my son is older. I think that many of the suggestions would be helpful to someone on the AS.

While the information is incontrovertible as it pertains to assessing signs in the development of children, there is scarce information for assessing and living with adults. While I could identify symptoms in the history of my adult child, living with an adult with AS one looks for avenues of treatment and/or perspective. I found the latter to be sorely lacking.

Power Cards is a great tool in helping some autistic children modify and/or change their inappropriate behavior. It might not be the right tool for all autistic children, but for some it can really open up doors to social appropriateness and development. The examples are great and the clinical results listed in the book give a great deal of credibility to this strategy.

This book is for higher functioning individuals on the spectrum. It is for kids with very high coginitive abilities and comunication skills. The idea behind this book is to use the sometimes rigid interests of kids on the spectrum and teach them socially appropriate skills.

After reading the positive revievs of this book I decided to buy it, and I was sorely disappointed. The author seems to have had some level of success with some ASD children by using potential special interests to modify behaviour, by telling that "a Spice Girl" would never do that..

The idea is good and might help sometime, but I found th book extremely narcicistic and belitteling.

It should have been a 3 page note instead of a book, and it would have been better for it!

Good for girls 5 out of 5 stars.

Many books written about disability are often taken from or about boys experiences,and girls have not yet got on the radar in many areas. I speak from experience as I have a daughter with AS. She is now 22 y.o and I have just discovered this. Not through lack of searching for information, (and misdirection from 'professionals) but by discovering literature written by Tony Attwood et al.

Girls with Aspergers made it very clear to me that there is not one type of AS, it comes in many forms and is mercurial! It also looked at AS from many perspectives. That is from young women writing about being an 'aspie', to others who were teachers, assessors and relatives of the AS person. This meant that I could guage my own experiences and thoughts against others who have experienced similar things, and know that I am not going nuts, and that what I know and see is valid. Very assuring.

Thankfully, my daughter is a reader, and of course she has been as confused as I about her 'difference' - we know she is not stupid as her general knowledge and peculiar abilities keep us on our toes and never fail to astound us. However, her social life leaves a big hole in all our hearts.

So, I gave her this book to read. Tthe lights went on. She was able to identfy with much of what was said. She also found more confidence, and we have been able to share some of her stored anxieties. I too have made a shift in my communication, expectations and approaches to my daughter. This has made a world of difference to how we now get on. I can also speak confidently about her needs (based on AS vocabulary)and how to work with my girl, to agency staff who have been scratching their heads too.

I am now greatly inspired. This book has lifted me out of a long depression and extended grief for my child and myself. I can break now from beating myself up.

Excellent level-headed book for adults with Asperger's 5 out of 5 stars.

This book's primary audience is for adults living with Asperger's. In a field dominated by books on Asperger's and autism in children, it is often hard to find books that focus primarly on adult issues and concerns. If you buy only one book on the subject of diagnosis, coping and life with Asperger's, this is the book to get. Written by Carley, who was diagnosed with Asperger's as an adult, this book is like sitting down and chatting with a witty, intellegent friend who has experienced the ups and downs associated with knowing one is different, finally being diagnosed and living with the diagnosis. This well-written, readable book is filled with information, advice and most refreshing of all, an overall positive attitude about Asperger's. While the primary audience is adults with Asperger's this book is equally valuable for parents, family and friends of people with Asperger's. As someone living with Asperger's I can't recommend this book enough, it reflects my experience and is filled with practical insights and advice.

Many people probably remember hearing about Jason McElwain on the news back in 2006. He scored a record six three-point shots for his high school basketball team. That might not have been outstanding for a superior high school player, but Jason was the team manager, not a first string player. And, in addition to that, he was a young man diagnosed as autistic.

In THE GAME OF MY LIFE, Jason McElwain tells his story. He shares what he recalls from family stories about his early childhood years, unable to communicate or even tolerate his mother's loving touch. Extensive medical testing resulted in a diagnosis of severe autism. With the help of dedicated parents, Jason was able to learn coping skills and manage many of his autistic outbursts. Sports provided a focus point and an outlet for his energy, and ultimately earned Jason his moments of fame.

Jason's unique voice can be clearly heard as he tells his memories of early treatments thought to reduce the symptoms of autism. He explains the frustration of moving from one school to the next as school administrators searched for the best programs to help him. As Jason became interested and involved in a variety of sports, he found not only friends, but also a way to achieve success. Always in touch with reality, Jason knew his skills were adequate but not exceptional, and his success came as a chance to just be part of a team. But with the care and concern of his coach and teammates, his part on the team gave him the chance of his life and memories that have changed him forever.

THE GAME OF MY LIFE is an inspiring story about living with an increasingly common condition. It is an excellent book for teens suffering with autism or connected to someone with the condition. Jason's positive, up-beat personality is refreshing, as well as direct and realistic.

Brilliant, eloquent, and helpful, this book is not only eye opening, but gives a clear grasp and understanding to the broad spectrum Autism occupies. Dr. Kluth's book clearly explains the way parents and teachers can impact children not only at home, but in an inclusive classroom.

"You re" Going to Love this Kid" is written in a clear, no non-sense style capturing the unique challenges that can occur between school systems, teachers, parents and the special child with autism. Dr. Kluth brilliantly gives examples and steps to help overcome the obstacles so many parents face with educational professionals who may be ignorant or unaware of the promising and doable outlook of inclusive teaching.

Dr. Kluth's book is not only creative, but easy to follow and useful. It is information on routines and other helpful ideas and all done in an easy to follow creative way. This book is inspiring and touching with the many stories she includes from actual students.

I borrow Dr. Kluth's book out regularly and strongly encourage teachers, administrators and parents to attend Dr. Kluth's seminars regarding inclusive teaching and understanding autism.
