Editorial Review:

When their nineteen-month-old son, Miles, was diagnosed with autism, Karyn Seroussi, a writer, and her husband, a scientist, fought back with the only weapons at their disposal: love and research. Consulting medical papers, surfacing the Web, and networking with other parents, they traced the onset of their child's problems to an immune system breakdown that coincided with his vaccinations. As a result, his digestive system was unable to break down certain proteins, which in turn led to abnormal brain development. So Karyn and her husband got to work -- Karyn implementing their program at home while her husband tested his theories at the scientific lab where he worked.

Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder is an inspiring and suspenseful chronicle of how one couple empowered themselves to challenge the medical establishment that promised no hope -- and found a cure for their child.

Here are the explanations and treatments they so carefully researched and discovered, a wealth of crucial tools and hands-on information that can help other parents reverse the effects of autism and PDD, including step-by-step instructions for the removal of dairy and gluten from the diet, special recipes, and an explanation of the roles of the key players in autism research.

Are you an Aspie? 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I find it hard to believe there is only one review for this book! I am an undiagnosed Aspie and I found this book to be beyond belief. OK, I haven't read the whole book and I've started about 5 others on AS. I guess it comes with the territory.

What I am saying is that if you're an Aspie and you want to see how your mind works, in words, right before your eyes then take a look at just the first 50 pages. I've had many professionals (6 - 20) try to help me with very little success, learned of AS about a year ago, and none of them can hold a candle to Valerie. I am awe-struck; she is special!

Editorial Review:

An invaluable resource for therapists, this lucidly written book provides research-based strategies for addressing the core problems of Asperger syndrome (AS) and helping clients manage frequently encountered comorbidities, such as anxiety disorders and depression. Detailed case examples illustrate the complexities of AS and the challenges it presents in daily life, relationships, and the workplace. The author presents a cogent rationale for cognitive-behavioral intervention and offers clear guidelines for conducting assessments and designing and implementing individualized treatment plans. Throughout, the emphasis is on helping people with AS decrease distress while preserving and building on their unique strengths. Special features include a case formulation worksheet and other helpful reproducibles.

Editorial Review:

She was a beautiful doelike child, with an intense, graceful fragility. In her first year, she picked up words, smiled and laughed, and learned to walk. But then Anne-Marie began to turn inward. And when her little girl lost some of the words she had acquired, cried inconsolably, and showed no interest in anyone around her, Catherine Maurice took her to doctors who gave her a devastating diagnosis: autism.
In their desperate struggle to save their daughter, the Maurices plunged into a medical nightmare of false hopes, "miracle cures," and infuriating suggestions that Anne-Marie's autism was somehow their fault. Finally, Anne-Marie was saved by an intensive behavioral therapy.
Let Me Hear Your Voice is a mother's illuminating account of how one family triumphed over autism. It is an absolutely unforgettable book, as beautifully written as it is informative.

What the Autism Research Institute says about this book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Autism Research Institute highly recommends this book (I have attached their review below). I think that speaks volumes about the value of the book content. I can also tell you that the book is easy to read and understand (and even entertaining at times). It provides detailed information to parents about how they can help their children through changes in diet and by reducing exposure to environmental toxins. Its value lies in its heartfelt story and in its nuts-and-bolts advice.

Here is the Autism Research Institute review:
Sallie Kirk joins the ranks of Warrior Moms who have turned author with her new book Hope for the Autism Spectrum, (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, September 2008). In her first-hand account of the journey she's taken through the autism spectrum with her son Will, she describes how her experiences using a biomedical approach served to vastly improve the quality of his life.

As Will's story unfolds over the course of this 320-page book, readers learn of the many biomedical interventions available - all told from a mother's invaluable first-hand perspective.
A strong proponent of the Defeat Autism Now! approach (a project of the Autism Research Institute -ARI), Ms. Kirk describes with careful detail the progress Will made in the care of a physician skilled at implementing these treatments, and includes ARI's Parental Ratings of Biomedical Interventions in the appendix of her book.

Hope for the Autism Spectrum received the coveted starred (noteworthy) review in the Library Journal, which called it "An essential book for public libraries." Read the Library Journal review online

Although biomedical treatment is generally recommended as early as possible, Ms. Kirk's story proves that it's never too late: she didn't begin biomedical treatment with Will until he was 11, and it was these very interventions that made a huge difference in his progress.

A highly recommended book for parents who want to learn about how biomedical interventions can help their child.

Editorial Review:

When Sally Kirk's son, Will, was diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), she did everything she could to understand his condition and to find ways of improving his quality of life. In this book, Sally shares the story of her journey with Will and how her discovery of biomedical interventions significantly improved his behavior and changed their lives for the better. This positive, practical book tells a personal story of hope and provides a wealth of essential information on biodmedical interventions for parents of children on the autism spectrum.

A fascinating page-turner filled with humor and compassion 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. The story of the Shumaker family's journey with Matthew, their autistic son, was so fascinating and well written that I felt as if I was part of the Shumaker family as I read. I couldn't put it down and ended up finishing it in one sitting. Life with Matthew is not always easy, but Ms. Shumaker's descriptions kept a smile on my face as I traveled the journey of adapting to a full and rich life with a son who is very special. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

A memoir about life with an autistic son, Matthew, written from his mothers perspective. It answers the many questions that people have about autism through the story of Matthews life spanning from babyhood to young adulthood. A Regular Guy illustrates the many ways in which family, friends and strangers are touched by Matthews desperate desire to be a regular guy, and how his brutal honesty and social awkwardness bring out the best and worst in people in touching and humorous ways. In turn, A Regular Guy leads readers to love and accept Matthew, quirks and all, and inspires them to understand and tolerate the differences in others.

Editorial Review:

Introverted children are often misunderstood, even by their parents, who worry about them. Engaged by their interior world, they’re often regarded as aloof. Easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation, they can be seen as unmotivated. Content with just one or two close friends, they may be perceived as unpopular. Parents fret that they are unhappy and maladjusted. But the truth is quite different: Introverted children are creative problem solvers. Introverted children love to learn. Introverted children have a high EQ (emotional IQ) and are in touch with their feelings. They take time to stop and smell the roses, and they enjoy their own company. They are dependable, persistent, flexible, and lack vanity.

How can parents help their introverted children discover and cultivate these wonderful gifts? Help is here. Written by Dr. Marti Olsen Laney, author of The Introvert Advantage with 74,000 copies in print, The Hidden Gifts of the Introverted Child fully explains introversion as a hardwired temperament, not a disability, and tells just what parents need to do to help their child become the person he or she is meant to be—and succeed in an extroverted world. Beginning with a 30-question quiz that places a child on the introvert/extrovert continuum, The Hidden Gifts shows parents how to foster a climate that allows introverted kids to discover their inner strengths; schedule ways for a very young innie to recharge those batteries and teach an older child to do it for him- or herself; create a harmonious household with siblings, and parents, of different temperaments; help innies find success at school, sports, parties, and other group activities.

Playing it Right! Social Skills Activities for Parents and Teachers of Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Including Asperger Syndrome and Autism

This book is EXACTLY what I was looking for! My 7.5 year old son is very high functioning autism spectrum disorder (PDD-NOS) and is cognitively very bright, but he does have difficulties managing his anger, and social skills (understanding the position of others, unwritten social rules) do not come naturally to him. He needs to be taught and practise these skills.

Whereas many books talk about the reasons that kids in the ASD have difficulties with these issues and give background and theories, and talk about things these kids need to be taught, this book actually gives you specific lesson plans for 20 specific social issues that your child may have. The lesson plans are simple, straightforward, short, child-friendly and very effective. The lessons are very interactive and include a short craft where the child is involved to facilitate understanding. They are very visual (child-friendly), very sensory and many include a "reminder card" that the child can make to refer to in their pocket or have posted in a convenient space. A list of things that you need to complete the lesson is at the very start of the lesson.

The book starts off with a social skills checklist of 20 social issues so that you can check off the specific social skills that your child needs to learn / practice and then directs you directly to the specific lesson plan to work on that skill. I found that 16/20 pertained to my child in one way or another. My son is 7.5, but I think this book would be very suitable for high functioning children as young as 4 and as old as 9 or 10.

This book is set up to use over and over again with completed examples of the work sheets in the lesson plan and then blank templates in the back. I have recently bought a second copy of this book for my son's school.

If you have to buy one book to work on social skills with an ASD child, I would highly recommend this one.

Editorial Review:

This collection of practical, hands-on social skills activities are easy for both parents and teachers to carry out with the child. The activities result in a finished product that can serve as a reminder to reinforce skills in addition to practicing reading, writing, fine-motor, etc.

Excellent level-headed book for adults with Asperger's 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book's primary audience is for adults living with Asperger's. In a field dominated by books on Asperger's and autism in children, it is often hard to find books that focus primarly on adult issues and concerns. If you buy only one book on the subject of diagnosis, coping and life with Asperger's, this is the book to get. Written by Carley, who was diagnosed with Asperger's as an adult, this book is like sitting down and chatting with a witty, intellegent friend who has experienced the ups and downs associated with knowing one is different, finally being diagnosed and living with the diagnosis. This well-written, readable book is filled with information, advice and most refreshing of all, an overall positive attitude about Asperger's. While the primary audience is adults with Asperger's this book is equally valuable for parents, family and friends of people with Asperger's. As someone living with Asperger's I can't recommend this book enough, it reflects my experience and is filled with practical insights and advice.

Editorial Review:

A detailed and excellent guide 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book contains valuable documentation of individuals with Asperger's or HFA, problems that arise and how many of the situations can be resolved. There are some great ideas on making worksheets and charts for the individual to track his/her own emotions. This book really helps someone to realize their potential as functioning members of society. It really gives the tools to one with Asperger's to understand and comprehend the world around them.

Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.

Very helpful 5 out of 5 stars.

Although I haven't purchased a copy of this book, I once read a copy that I borrowed from a library, and I found it very helpful.

As someone with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I know that if there had been books like this 30 years ago, I would have learned much earlier in life what things are appropriate to do and say in what situation. It's too bad that there were no books like this until recent years!

Editorial Review:

Because of its unique focus on teaching the critical social skills that autistic children lack, this book has been cited by "Library Journal" as "Essential to All Collections."

Suitable for boys and girls on the autism spectrum 5 out of 5 stars.
48 of 48 people found this review helpful.

My son turned ten a few months ago so I decided Personal Hygiene and Puberty were topics we needed to delve into. I am very glad I purchased this book since it covered Deodorant, shaving, growth spurts and using a urinal.

My 10 year old is high functioning and his almost nine year old sibling is non-verbal and could benefit from some of the chapters as he gets older.

Throughout the book the stories are told in various points of views, either in the first, second or third person. Visual cues, communication aides and assistive technology is shown within the chapters. Mary also suggests starting self-care skills as young as three for brushing teeth and washing hands.

One thing to note is that the fonts change throughout the book. The pages that discuss developing a program and teaching various skills are presented in an easy to read manner, mostly for the adults teaching the curriculum. The remaining pages are activities and social stories that have larger fonts that are bolded. This seems to be easier to follow for my son as well.

All the diagrams inside are in black and white, plus the cover is not overstated and should not be embarassing to a pre-teen or teen.

Your student or child will not read about birth control, sexual intercourse, reproduction or sexually transmitted diseases. It is recommended to supplement this curriculum as the students become young adults. I was glad to know these issues would not be covered, yet my son ran into two words when looking up puberty in the dictionary - reproductive and sexually.

He was disappointed not to find a glossary, but liked learning about growing a mustache and how old he would be when he finally gets to high school.

None of the steps listed in the book are numbered, which I think is a good thing so the students do not get stuck on certain numbers instead of the actual steps.

The information presented is repetitious in nature, but that is needed when teaching children on the autism spectrum. There is plenty of room for note taking and creating your own social stories. This book is a useful tool for families, teachers and therapists to instill these vital lessons to children with autism.

Editorial Review:

An experienced, certified teacher and speech-language pathologist has written this book to provide the necessary information on skills students need to live safe, healthy lives as independently as they are physically and mentally capable of living.
