Editorial Review:

Statistics show that up to 40 percent of children in the United States suffer from allergies and at least 10 percent suffer from asthma. That translates into almost five million American children affected by both allergies and asthma. And as Dr. Allen J. Dozor, head of one of the largest pediatric pulmonary practices in the United States, has seen among his patients, some of the most upsetting effects of allergies and asthma are the psychological wounds inflicted on a child's self-image. There is the constant protectiveness from caregivers, confusing limits and rules, headaches, obesity, shortness of breath, and sleep deprivation. In some cases these side effects, such as stress and obesity, cycle back to make the original condition worse.

Dr. Dozor's plan, developed over the last twenty years, is designed to empower both parents and children. His warmhearted but reality-based approach includes

  • How to give the right amount of medication for best effects and no side effects
  • Empowering your children to manage their own condition so that they can feel safe and secure
  • Prevention and management in school
  • Handling emergencies

And much more!

Clear, comprehensive, effective 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book has been written for parents and those who are responsible for the health of children suffering with asthma. By outlining a proven 7-step program in detail, Dr. Firshein, who is a well-known authority in the field of Preventive Medicine, gives the reader a great program for systematically healing a child with asthma and giving him or her life tools and knowledge to recognize and deal with any future recurrences. It is a highly effective program that the author encourages parents to share with their child's health provider so that the child may have the best care possible. I personally know of children that have been on this program and it has given them and their parents a whole new lease on life, bringing hope and new found health for the whole family.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Richard Firshein first developed and implemented his Breath of Life Program at a public elementary school in the Bronx that had one of the highest rates of asthma in the country. Nearly 100 percent of the asthmatic students experienced a dramatic drop in reliance on medication, emergency room visits, and school absences due to asthma attacks. Using his expertise in integrative medicine, Dr. Firshein has created a program that combines traditional medical practices with alternative approaches such as nutritional supplementation, diet, and breathing and visualization exercises to form a vital resource for any parent of an asthmatic child.

Editorial Review:

An easy-to-understand text complemented with color illustrations reassures children who suffer from asthma, explaining what it is and reminding them that with proper treatment and medical council, they can participate in all childhood activities and lead normal lives. All titles in the very helpful A First Look at. . . series speak directly to preschool and early-grades children, encouraging them to explore their feelings and talk to trusted elders about ways of dealing with things that bother them. Some problems discussed in these books are passing in nature and can be solved with relative ease. Others, like those treated in this new title, encourage children who have long-term health problems to trust in the professional medical care that they require, and not be frightened by it. The book features child-friendly color illustrations on every page. A brief section at the end of the book presents specific advice and information for parents.
