Editorial Review:

The award-winning Seizures and Epilepsy in Childhood is the standard resource for parents in need of comprehensive medical information about their child with epilepsy. Now in its third edition, this highly praised book has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the latest approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy in childhood, including the use of the ketogenic diet as a treatment for children who either do not respond to traditional drug therapy or who suffer intolerable side effects from medications.

In addition to providing up-to-date information about new diagnostic techniques as well as new drugs, diet, and surgical treatments, the authors have included a chapter addressing routine health care for children with epilepsy and a new chapter on complementary and alternative therapies. Also new to this edition are discussions of the progress made in the evaluation for surgery, a chapter on insurance issues, and a section detailing additional resources.

"No child's life should be defined by seizures. If we understand how the brain works, what happens during seizures, and how to cope with epilepsy, we can overcome the mythology of epilepsy and fight society's prejudices, allowing every child with epilepsy to reach his or her full potential." -- From Seizures and Epilepsy in Childhood

If you have or know a child with epilepsy, THE KETOGENIC DIET: A TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN AND OTHERS WITH EPILEPSY is a 'must' for your consideration: it offers a solution beyond medication which provides a doctor-supervised diet high in fat and low in carbs and proteins, which limits calories - and is proven to control seizures. There've been many advances in the field, so this updated 4th edition is essential even for library holdings with prior editions. Keto Mom recommends this book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book after my son started the ketogenic diet. This books has great recipes and suggestions. I make waffles which are his favorite. I learned where to buy products. This books makes the diet easier.

Editorial Review:

For more than half of all children with epilepsy, the only reliable way to control seizures is through the ketogenic diet, a rigid regimen that strictly limits both calories and liquid intake. Keto Kid details the daily management of the diet — where one extra bite of food can have serious repercussions on a child’s health — while also addressing the emotional struggle children encounter with the loss of their favorite foods and the necessity of learning rigorous self-denial at a very young age. The book also provides recipes for keto-friendly meals and tips for making this limited diet more interesting; time-saving strategies such as pre-weighing and freezing meals; and a day-by-day account of life on the ketogenic diet; and more. Calm, direct, and above all, hopeful, Snyder helps families successfully adopt the diet while making the experience as pleasant as possible for both child and parent.

Gentle Story about Seizures in Kid's 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautifully illustrated book for children, parents and families of those dealing with seizures and epilepsy. The story is a simple one of friendship between a boy and a girl when Teddy starts having seizures. The book is well written and helps kids understand what seizures are and what do they have to go through with test and treatment.
I found the explanation of the EEG quiet genial....It is like a phone and your brain is talking through the EEG.....very easy for a child to capture.
The illustrations are colorful and vibrant and the paper material of excellent quality.
This book is a gem and should help parents and children understand seizures and epilepsy.

Editorial Review:

Missing Michael A Mother's Story of Love, Epilepsy, and Perseverance is the author's moving account of her son's struggle with epilepsy, its complications, and the effects of the drugs used to treat it. The story covers a time period of over fifteen years as the family attempts to maintain normalcy even as Michael's condition and treatment often envelop him in a haze-like state. Michael's parents are faced with the unenviable task of determining how many seizures are "acceptable" and how much drug is simply "too much." Michael's condition over the years is wildly variable. There are moments, days, and weeks when he bears little resemblance to his gregarious, mischievous pre-seizure self. And while the family is grateful for Michael's presence however he is, there are moments of pure joy when his true personality manages to break through the drug-and-seizure-induced fog. Occasional comments from friends and family such as, "Michael seems more like himself," or "Michael seems so much more alert," are indicative that others in his life miss facets of Michael as well. In Missing Michael..., a mother lays bare her thoughts about school and health care systems, societal indifference, and the harm that results from lack of compassion and tolerance. She acknowledges the dedicated professionals who have helped Michael medically and academically. She applauds Michael's strength of spirit and his courage and ability to overcome substantial obstacles. And throughout its pages, this mother's story celebrates the bond of family and the power of love and hope.
