Cody the Allergic Cow: A children's story of Milk Allergies 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Our entire family loves this book. We were thrilled to find a book to help explain to our just turned 3 year old what his milk allergy is all about. He loves it! And asks to read it each night. I'm going to send it to preschool as well, so that the teachers there may inform the other children about why my son eats different foods than them. All in all a great book..easy to follow...great animations...don't wait...buy it now!

Cow's Milk 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for my 3 year old son who was recently diagnosed with a milk allergy. He absolutley loves this book and in fact sleeps with it most nights. This book is basic and informative and helps a child understand what a milk allergy is. I hear comments from my son, "does this have cow's milk in it" and when I say yes he goes OK- Cody can not have cow's milk either. This book has been a great help in teaching my children about milk allergies. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to explain a milk allergy to a child.

Editorial Review:

"Cody the Allergic Cow" helps children learn about milk allergies and how to recognize an allergic reaction. "Cody" explains milk allergies in a way that parents, teachers, and children themselves can talk about allergies and understand them better.

Perfect! 5 out of 5 stars.

Great teaching tool for my 3 y.o. The photos and message are clear and easy to understand without being too scary.

An excellent resource for families of allergic preschoolers 5 out of 5 stars.

Ms. Black's book, "Mommy, Is This Safe to Eat? A Guide for Preschoolers Allergic to Peanuts and Tree Nuts" is very appropriate for allergic preschoolers and their families, whether new to allergic living or quite familiar with these allergies (my preschool-aged allergic son connected with the book instantly). Among the book's attributes are photos of peanuts, tree nuts and baked goods, a healthy dialogue about "safe" and "unsafe" foods, a focus on the role of family in keeping an allergic child safe, and most importantly, photos of a real-life, happy boy managing allergic living. These factors together combine to create a tool greater than the sum of its parts.

Fantastic book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I feel this is the most appropriate book on the subject that I have found for my 2 1/2 year old. It is simple, gives her the most important information without bogging her down with too many details. The real photos are quite helpful so she can recognize nuts, and the fact that there's a real boy named Ricky out there with the same issue seems comforting to her. She refers to Ricky by name. I highly recommend this book and sharing it with close friends, and teachers so others can have a better understanding of your child.

Editorial Review:

This children's picture book teaches children with food allergies how to be careful in everyday situations and still have fun. It is an essential book for preschoolers with food allergies to peanuts and tree nuts.

Okay 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is ok, though I have found many bits of information that are either outdated or just plain misleading. Like recommending clarified butter for use if you should not have dairy. That may work for a small number of people with minor allergies who happen to get some that is 100% casein free, but it is very unlikely. There was also a doom and gloom attitude about the dangers of a restricted diet while breastfeeding and not a lot of support about sticking with it as being the best thing for your child. Plus outdated information on recommended breastfeeding guidelines and a lack of practical advice for living with food allergies and the emotional aspect of sticking to it made this book not worth owning, IMO. There are much better out there. So use common sense and research more in this book before you follow the recommendations.

Editorial Review:

The tools and methods this guide provides for analyzing and treating allergies in children are adaptable to a variety of situations—without ever losing sight of a child's nutritional needs. Recognizing that deficiencies in critical nutrients during a child's early years can have enormous consequences on growth and bodily functions, the book focuses on prevention and allergy management during pregnancy, in the early weeks of life, and in early childhood. The unique allergen scale and the strategies for confronting the top 10 allergens will help parents balance their child's specific nutritional needs while managing delicate allergies to food.

A Great Gift for New Parents 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've given copies of this book to all my relatives and many friends after their babies were born. The title is a bit misleading ... it's much more than home remedies and is not intended as a substitute for pediatricians. This well-organized book covers a broad range of potential concerns (from colds, behavior problems, discipline techniques, rashes, ticks, and allergies to more serious diseases) and ages (babies to teens), offering information that is easily understandable yet fairly comprehensive and to the point. It can help parents understand what's "normal" and specifies when a visit to a doctor is imperative/advisable. It's useful as a reference, allowing a parent to review the child's symptoms before a visit to the doctor and perhaps ask "better" questions (or provide "better" information) during the examination.

A guide to the diagnosis and treatment of common childhood ailments and developmental problems furnishes healing tips and advice on coping with asthma, ADD, croup, sibling rivalry, toilet training, teething, chicken pox, and other problems. Reprint.

If you only buy one book in your life - IT SHOULD BE THIS!! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is is the first review I have ever felt compelled to write in response to the first review which claims that this book is "rubbish". Let me just say that my father found out about food intolerance from the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney a few years before Sue wrote the book. Furthermore I have a sister who is studying neuroscience, another who studies medicine - we all support Sue Dengate and feel we are eating healthier food than we have ever done before.

Food intolerance is a relatively new area being studied and we are far from completely understanding how chemicals (food and other)affect the body. Sue Dengates book was the first piece of literature which gave me an insight into food intolerance and how it affected me. Years later I still am re-reading it. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A COPY!!!!

Growing up, though outside of the home I was thought to be an angel and was achieving exceptional grades (without studying mind you, which I have always regretted) - at home I was often a completely obnoxious, uncontrollable terror. The foods I was eating affected my health and mood (I often had a cold, had constant swings between adoring everyone and being depressed or angry - especially if I was asked to clean up etc). Rarely did a day go past where I did not get into trouble. We all thought it was normal behaviour - part of growing up. Imagine everyones relief when I started eating "friendly foods". In fact everyone noticed improvements - and mum's migranes are gone.

I can't begin to descibe the profound effect this book and finding out about food intolerance has had on my family's life. I am still learning how food effects me. This isn't a diet!! Everyone is affected by food differently and everyone has a different tolerance level to certain chemicals (refer to "Super Size Me").It is about finding out if and to what extent you are affected - allowing you to make informed decisions about what you put in your mouth - allowing you to lead the life you want to lead.

Once big problems like health and behaviour have disappeared there are subtle effects food has on your mood, concentration, sleep, balance etc These take longer to fix - and often you only notice the difference when you start eating the wrong foods again. I am one of the lucky ones to have been affected enough for the diet to have a notieable difference in my behaviour so these subtle benefits can give me the extra edge over my competition at university.

Sue, if you read this - I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!

Editorial Review:

Based on groundbreaking research, Sue's books show that learning difficulties, behavioural problems and minor chronic illness in children and adults can all be the result of intolerance to food chemicals. In this long-awaited, fully updated and revised edition of FED UP, Sue provides up to the minute information about food intolerance and elimination diets, shares inspiring stories of families overcoming their problems, and lists dozens of favourite and improved recipes for all kinds of occasions. This fully updated and revised book is an essential tool for parents wanting a calmer, happier - and healthier - family.

A little disappointed 3 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I was expecting more recipes and was hoping for more quick and easy recipes for my peanut, milk and egg allergic 3 year old. Some of the recipes are too time consuming or require specialty items. Since my child is very picky, I have wasted so much food in the past so I am hesitant to spend time and money on some of these recipes. I was looking for more simple ideas for 3 meals utilizing simpler and faster ingrediants.

This cookbook sucks for multiple food allergies.... 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 17 people found this review helpful.

The format of this book is aweful. Essentially what they've done is to write normal recipes and then list the substitutions at the bottom. I can do this without their help. What I wanted was a thoughtful well written and kitchen tested set of recipes that worked for mulitple food allergies. I made the chocolate chip cookies using their substitutions for wheat, milk and eggs, "baked sand castle bars" would have been a better name for them. If I'm going to eat a gritty cookie, it better come with a prize like a diamond or an orgasim. Nobody who tasted that recipe would have ever published it.

Entire 'Taking Special Kids to School Series' is a must have. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a Special Education Parents Advisory Committee board member, we donated the entire series to our town library, pre-2, and 3-4th grades. Awareness education helps students, parents and teachers dispell misconceptions that we are all the same. It's OK to be different and here is why...This series clearly explains what the problem is and what tools there are to work with it.

Editorial Review:

This colored illustrated 32 page book for elementary age children helps them learn about allergy testing and asthma and allergy triggers. Justin goes to the doctor to get tested for allergies, and afterwards, he and his friend, Ashley, go to the zoo. While there, they make a game of discovering things like animal fur, dust, and dander that would trigger their allergy and asthma.

Quick shipping; however, this is actually a 32-page simplistic BOOKLET for kids. Nice pictures but a bit pricey for the size.

Editorial Review:

Flourishing With Food Allergies: Social, Emotional and Practical Guidance for Families With Young Children is an empowering guide for those who are coping with a food allergy in today s world. By sharing her own personal experiences and successes, as well as those of numerous families, doctors and teachers, author A. Anderson has provided an immense and invaluable compilation of practical experience. The book begins by showcasing fifteen case studies of families who have successfully handled food allergies in their young children. These case studies offer parents and caretakers an opportunity to learn about social, emotional and practical aspects of raising a child with food allergies. Seven additional interviews from a variety of doctors and teachers are provided for professional perspectives, advice and positive support. They describe different experiences, attitudes, and beliefs about the increase in food allergies in children and other disorders that might be affected by food allergies such as asthma and ADHD. This practical and positive guide is not just for parents, Grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, caretakers, pediatricians, therapists, school cafeteria and restaurant workers will learn valuable information about how to handle food allergies and support these children. The book also provides a number of other tools, lists of food ingredients and additives to avoid, school and travel preparedness checklists, and discussions of myth versus fact relative to food allergies. Further, the pros and cons of a 504 Disability Plan are explored and compared with a less formal Action Plan for handling food allergies in children attending school. In addition, Anderson relies upon her personal experience in finding food-free activities and handling food-filled events to further empower families and children cope with food allergy-related issues. All of these tools seek to educate and prepare caretakers both in practical and emotional terms and avoid scare tactics sometimes found in other sources.
