great alternative to meds! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you have a child who is sensitive to different foods that may be affecting behavior, this is the book for you. Was very helpful in addressing behavior that can be caused by foods. I used it for my child and found good results. It is not the easiest thing to change your child's diet, but if the behavior difference becomes apparent even to the child, then you have won half the battle. A must try before you put your child on meds!!

Editorial Review:

In this ground-breaking book, Dr. C. Keith Conners, a world-renowned authority on children's mental health, reveals startling new evidence on the critical impact foods can have on a child's behavior and even I.Q.

For your child's sake, please read this review 4 out of 5 stars.

There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends that all asthma sufferers take supplemental magnesium daily -- 600 mg daily for addults (proportionally less, according to their body weight, for children). People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. For your child's sake, please read Dr. Dean's important book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.

Editorial Review:

For children who live with a chronic illness, each day is filled with endless treatments, painful symptoms, confusion, and embarrassment. How can an eight-year old girl understand diabetes let alone explain to her schoolmates why she has to leave class to have her blood tested? How can the father of a child with asthma ever sleep soundly through the night with the fear that his son may suffocate in the next room? In In Sickness and in Play, Cindy Dell Clark tells the stories of children who suffer from two common illnesses that are often underestimated by those not directly touched by them-asthma and diabetes. She describes how play, humor, and other expressive methods, invented by the kids themselves, allow families to cope with the pain. Clark's work is one of the few studies to focus on maladies that kids must learn to live with rather than die from. Her interviews with forty-six families give readers an understanding of how children comprehend their illnesses and how parents struggle daily to care for their kids while trying to give them a "normal" childhood. Chronically ill children are at a greater risk of developing mental health or social adjustment problems than their peers, and asthma has been gaining ground in both incidence and fatality in recent years. Clark's eye-opening work emphasizes the importance of improving the lives of these kids by understanding their perspectives, both imagined and real.

Comprehensive and Helpful 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book (and advice) can be overwhelming at first but it's excellent at helping you understand how food and chemical sensitivities can influence your child's health and behavior. There is so much information and it really gives you a clear idea on how to try to track down the roots of problems like hyperactivity, bedwetting, migraines, rashes, moodiness, ear infections, etc. The elimination diet helps you pinpoint triggers you might never have realized caused issues otherwise. I added soy to the eliminated products when we did it, since soy has become a much more common allergen and ingredient since the book was written.

If you have a child suffering from physical or behavior issues and you don't want to just blindly medicate, this is a book to read. It is somewhat outdated, but it's simply the best book out there on this subject. The author's "Is This Your Child's World" is also excellent and covers me of this and some more-- particularly more environmental triggers like chemicals in carpets, pesticides, etc. that can be causing problems.

great gift for teachers and parents 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Easily read and understood book. Kids don't like being bad and this book explains why, because of their reactions to their environment, they can't help it. It addresses the reasons, not the symptoms, of poor performance. Great book for parents who care to give their children the best possible chance in life. Not for parents who just want to give their child a pill. This book's content will become common knowledge in the future as parents demand more out of the medical field.

ADD? You Need This Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This guidebook is an essential reference for teachers, parents, and anyone who deals with kids on a regular basis. The prevalence of ADD diagnoses should lead us all to question what the bigger picture is. Allergy problems are one of the most important consequences of our modern world. This guidebook is designed to help laypeople spot allergies in kids, especially the kids who act up. It's a shame to drug kids with Ritalin when dietary or environmental changes can give better results without turning children into zombies. To ignore the accomplishments of Environmental Medicine would be foolish.

There is a lot of detail packed into this small book to help parents and teachers understand food, environmental, and chemical allergies, and to spot them on their own. Helpful advice is provided for different diets that can reveal a lot about a troubled child's behavior. Diagnostic diets (elimination diets) are detailed as well as rotation diets to minimize food reactions. Descriptions of children's allergic responses are detailed and accurate, making it easier for you to know how to spot allergies in kids.

Though this low-budget publication is written by a doctor and not a writer, it is not overly technical in style. The writing is to-the-point, a how-to manual for your potentially allergic kid, full of suggestions, case studies, and references. Dr. Rapp is an expert in the field of pediatric environmental medicine in the tradition of Theron Randolph MD, and her experience is apparent. Though I know there are better treatments than extracts for allergies (her recommendation, in addition to dietary and/or environmental changes), it is still a vast improvement over drugs and allergy shots. Her diagnostic methods are also not the best known, but still better than the more mainstream methods she also details in this guide. To be critical, this is not a guide to the most cutting-edge diagnosis or treatment in modern allergy medicine, but it's a vast improvement over more mainstream approaches of Ritalin, steroids, and other drugs. Every parent of an ADD-type child needs this book!

Editorial Review:

This book will enable you to recognize which children have allergies, or food or chemical sensitivities interfering with their ability to learn and behave normally. Practical sensible ways to help children with these problems are discussed. With this information you may be able to alter the course of some child's life in a more positive direction - today!

Tracking Down Hidden Food Allergies 4 out of 5 stars.

We ONLY use this book to teach the Elimination Diet for allergies to foods. It is easy to follow, with enough options so that it doesn't make meal planning boring.

The best of Dr. Crook's books 5 out of 5 stars.

I use this book extensively when counselling my patients on
food allergies. This book is actually more useful than the more famous "Yeast connection" and has better references. practical, concise and entirely useful

Cheesy but clear and informative 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this book from the library, and have found it very useful in planning the common foods elimination diet I am going to do for myself and my daughter. The illustrations are very cheesy, but this book is informative, easy to read, and gives hope that you can actually DO the protocol. The pictorial lists of foods that you can eat and foods you must avoid on the elimination diet make them easy to remember, and I think this book will make it easy for my daughter's baby sitter to implement the diet during her trial. You should definitely read this book if you suspect food allergies for yourself or your child.

Quick to criticize but will never understand 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Having lived through the diagnosis of my son -- I can relate 100% with this book. The mother's feelings, the ability to press on while others are in denial..... It can be a lonely road at times. You become so desperate that you feel that one day your child will snap out of it. I read the reviews and thought it is easy for a reader to criticize not having gone through this. Mary, I apologize for their ignorance.
As a result - in addition to the chelation therapy I also removed dairy from my son's diet. At first I saw little change until I put him back on milk and boy I saw the self stimming go out of control. His dad and I were at the verge of separation a few years ago as well. He was in denial while I was fighting the system -but thank God he is has come on board and is the most dedicated Dad and supportive husband - even among my friends that have autistic kids - my husband is a Godly Gift.

We are doing a lot better - I feel so encouraged and hopeful. I no longer feel guilty about my frustrations or anger - I now know it's a natural feeling and I know I have over come it. BUt I did feel guilty for having the initial feelings If only I had met someone as truthful and honest - I thought I was going mad with my thoughts and reactions to my son's diagnosis. Now my son is 6 years old. He is high functional - there is still a long journey ahead. This book has made me even more determined to seek more help.

I've had the opportunity to meet Renee Randazzo, (Tony's sister in the book)- she works at a center helping children get services for their special needs. She took her family's journey to help others. I APPLAUD Renee's work and her mom's determination to see through this whole ordeal. I wish I could meet Mary Callahan in person and let her know that I was encouraged and determined to also fight for my son, Cristian.

This is a great book for someone who has had a diagnosis in their family. Years later - therapies and treatment change to the better - but initial feelings are just as real and painful. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WRITING YOUR STORY!!!!!!
