Editorial Review:

The infant management concepts presented in this book have found favor with over two million parents and twice as many contented babies. On Becoming Babywise brings hope to the tired and bewildered parents looking for an alternative to sleepless nights and fussy babies. The Babywise Parent Directed Feeding concept has enough structure to bring security and order to your baby's world, yet enough flexibility to give mom freedom to respond to any need at any time. It teaches parents how to lovingly guide their baby's day rather than be guided or enslaved to the infant's unknown needs. The information contained within On Becoming Babywise is loaded with success. Comprehensive breast-feeding follow-up surveys spanning three countries, of mothers using the PDF method verify that as a result of the PDF concepts, 88% breast-feed, compared to the national average of only 54% (from the National Center for Health Statistics). Of these breast-feeding mothers, 80% of them breast-feed exclusively without a formula complement. And while 70% of our mothers are still breast-feeding after six months, the national average encourage to follow demand feeding without any guidelines is only 20%. The mean average time of breast-feeding for PDF moms is 33 1/2 weeks, well above the national average. Over 50% of PDF mothers extend their breast-feeding toward and well into the first year. Added to these statistics is another critical factor. The average breast-fed PDF baby sleeps continuously through night seven to eight hours between weeks seven and nine. Healthy sleep in infants is analogous to healthy growth and development. Find out for yourself why a world of parents and pediatricians utilize the concepts found in On Becoming Babywise.

Pediatrician: I recommend it to all 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I recommend this book to all my parents starting at 1mo. Since doing this routinely I have noticed many more sleeping babies and parents with much less intervention from me. I talk about sleep a lot, but now I dont have to as much! Teaching a baby sleep independence is a vital developmental task (most parents dont realize this), most new parents wait WAY too long, and somehow expect the baby to "do it when they are ready." Waiting until 12mo old is a guarantee of having to "cry it out", and that is OK if necessary, but starting younger will avoid this. I have scores and scores of happy parents from all walks of life who are thrilled with their 6mo old, and the baby is MUCH happier too. You are doing this for your baby, not so much for yourself, children need to sleep longer to function during the day. A 10 mo old who is getting up every 2-3 hours is barely able to function during the day (let alone the mom, especially behind the wheel). Get this book early and think about it and discuss with your partner, you wont be disappointed. BTW, it is much easier to read than the popular "Healthy Sleep Habits" book, which could use a good editor.

Editorial Review:

Right after "Is it a boy or a girl?" and "What's his/her name?," the next question people invariably ask new parents is "Are you getting any sleep?" Unfortunately, the answer is usually "Not much." In fact, studies show that approximately 25% of young children experience some type of sleep problem and, as any bleary-eyed parent will attest, it is one of the most difficult challenges of parenting.

Drawing on her ten years of experience in the assessment and treatment of common sleep problems in children, Dr. Jodi A. Mindell now provides tips and techniques, the answers to commonly asked questions, and case studies and quotes from parents who have successfully solved their children's sleep problems.

Unlike other books on the subject, Dr. Mindell also offers practical tips on bedtime, rather than middle-of-the-night-sleep training, and shows how all members of the family can cope with the stresses associated with teaching a child to sleep.

Editorial Review:

DESCRIPTION: America's favorite pediatric experts turn their attention to the hottest topic in parenting--solving babies' sleep problems--in a definitive book that offers immediate results. For every parent who's ever been deprived of sleep by a restless infant or toddler, now there's hope. This much-needed addition to the Sears Parenting Library is the comprehensive, reassuring, solution-filled sleep resource that virtually every American family will want to own. Nighttime separation anxiety, new breastfeeding habits, and an increase in adult sleep problems have made babies' sleep habits a growing concern in recent years. The Searses offer solutions. Instead of espousing the kind of "one-method-fits-all" approach advocated in other parenting books, the Searses teach parents how to match the nighttime temperament of their baby to their own lifestyle. The authors draw on important new infant sleep research from the Mother-Baby Sleep Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, as well as on their own personal experience as parents of children with a wide range of sleep habits. They also offer a detailed critique of the myriad new devices and ballyhooed techniques that promise to deliver safer and better infant sleep. THE BABY SLEEP BOOK provides parents with the practical tools they need to help the entire family sleep better.

Sanity saver 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I foolishly thought the advise in 'What to expect..' was the only way to go. It made sense to me as I was about to be a first time mother.

A child can't be spoiled by being held too much.
Every time the infant shows hunger cues, feed him. Fist sucking, crying is a late cue. I was always feeding him. *Turns out our son was trying to suck his thumb, but was too young to stick it out and keep it steady.

My husbands family used/uses Baby Wise and had recommended it to me before my son's birth. Boy should I have listened. At 2 1/2 months my son and I were a complete wreck!!

The constant holding and soothing all day long made a child that cried whenever he was put down. Or cried when repositioned a couple inches to make the person holding him more comfortable.
The demand feeding made me completely "available" to him at all times.
He was exhausted and fussy all the time!

It wasn't working for either of us. I ran out and found a copy of Baby Wise. Within days our lives were better. The biggest change for us was reversing the order eat/wake/sleep. We don't write down the times that each step is supposed to happen. We write down the times they did, so that we can see what his possible needs are. Flex is the key. This happy giggly baby emerged.

I can leave my son with his dad- no bottle needed. I used to dread getting in the shower because my son would wake up screaming mid way through...the list goes on...well, not anymore.

I didn't do this flex schedule for selfish reasons; it wasn't all about making his life convenient for me. He was miserable!!

Naps enable him to enjoy several hours a day set aside for his entertainment/development. I can't say it enough that flex is the key. If he wants to spend his "wake time" in the swing dozing on and off; it's all good. If a snack is needed after play time it's given. His needs are never ignored to keep the schedule. I'm way more intune to my son with PDF than demand feeding.

I hope that someone looking for answers doesn't pass this method up because of the negative reviews. Frankly, I would have if I'd read them before using it.
Happy healthy (95% in all catagories) baby = happy family

Not helpful unless you are breastfeeding 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is helpful for breastfeeding moms, but if you want to do attachment parenting and for whatever reason are not breastfeeding, this book will probably be a big disappointment. The two main suggestions are that you nurse your baby to soothe him/her and you let him/her sleep in your bed. So if you are formula feeding, you probably will find this book not full of solutions for you.

Dr. Sears, please note that not every mother is a birth mother and not every mother has a baby that is able to breastfeed and not every mother breastfeeds, but those mothers still love their babies and want them to have peaceful sleep.

Editorial Review:

For every parent who struggles with their baby's sleep (and for every parent who wishes their toddler had better sleep habits), finally a straightforward, all-natural solution to help baby get the sleep she needs—both through the night and during the day.

A sleep researcher with a Ph.D. in neuroscience, Dr. Polly Moore has created a simple, foolproof method based on the basic human rest and activity cycle (BRAC), which occurs every hour and a half. According to the BRAC, baby should go back for a nap a mere 90 minutes after waking up—that's right: 90 minutes.

The program is called N.A.P.S.—Note time when baby wakes up, Add 90 minutes, Play, feed, or pursue other activities, then, at the end of the 90 minutes, Soothe baby back to sleep. When baby wakes up again, whether after a short or a long nap, start the cycle over. And, although it sounds counterintuitive, frequent napping actually helps baby sleep through the night.

In a reassuring and accessible style, Dr. Moore explains how and why the program works; the benefits of napping—a happier, healthier baby with a headstart on cognitive development and emotional intelligence; how to implement it for babies at various ages, from two weeks to a year; and how to use it to solve common sleep programs, such as a baby's need to be held, baby waking up too early in the morning, baby getting a second wind before bedtime, baby confusing day and night, and more. The Wire-O-bound book includes a guided journal for recording baby's sleepy signals and sleep difficulties, a daily log for keeping track of baby's nap times, and space to note baby's milestones—all peppered with humorous, inspirational quotes.

Finally!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Finally, a book about getting your child to sleep that offers realistic solutions to very common problems. Kurcinka's style is so conversational and so practical, you almost feel as if you're taking one of her parenting workshops. She doesn't blame or scold... simply put, she gets you to figure out what's important to your family, and then how to go about getting it. It's been almost a week since I reinstituted nap time for my almost 3-year-old (who'd given up naps a long time ago) and already she is sleeping much better at night. This from a child who visibly stiffens at the very mention of "nap" or "sleep" of any kind. I highly recommend this valuable book.

Editorial Review:

Does your child

  • Refuse to cooperate in the morning?
  • Get into trouble for not listening?
  • "Lose it" over seemingly insignificant issues?
  • Seem to resist sleep?

An estimated 69 percent of American infants, children, and teens are sleep deprived. Studies have shown that sleep deficits can contribute to hyperactivity, distraction, forgetfulness, learning problems, illness, accidents, and disruptive behaviors. Often what our misbehaving kids really need isn't more "consequences" or more medication but more sleep.

Sleepless in America offers weary and frustrated parents a helping hand and an exciting new approach to managing challenging behaviors by integrating research on stress, sleep, and temperament with practical strategies and a five-step approach that enables parents to help their "tired and wired" children get the sleep they so desperately need.

It's working for us! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

After a disappointing 2 year check-up when our Doctor informed us that we needed to take away my son's bottle and let him cry it out in bed rather than rocking him to sleep, I was desperate for an option. I found this book and liked that is gives very specific, step by step instructions on exactly what to do at bedtime. I love her idea of relaxing stretches, deep breathing and using your imagination to go off to sleep on your own. You will actually teach your child how to fall asleep, instead of just leaving him to figure it out on his own. Brilliant and much kinder than that horrible Cry-it-out method. My son is 2 and we have adapted the book to fit his age and understanding, some of the ideas are a little old for him right now. But it does work! This is 6 weeks from starting the book and we now use the CD for the floppy game stretches and the story. I stay in the room to help with the stretches, but can walk away after the story and he will soon fall asleep, on his own, without me in the room! A huge change for us!! I can take a wide awake 2 yr old who doesn't want to go to sleep, lay him in his bed, use the CD and then leave him in his room awake and he will fall asleep on his own without crying!! That's worth more than gold to this Mama! (Getting him on a good consistent nap schedule has been important too - floppy game works for naps and bedtime!)

I just wanted to add that it is now almost a year later it is still working!! My son will be 3 at the beginning of July. He was never a good sleeper but now he can fall sleep on his own without us in the room! We have a bedtime routine of bath, read 3 stories (short board books), say a prayer, give hugs and kisses and then he climbs into bed and we play the floppy game with the cd. After the game ends, my husband and I leave the room and he listens to a story on the cd and falls asleep. My son is very happy and full of energy all the time so at bedtime he is still laughing and talking and jumping around when he gets into bed. But the floppy game relaxes him enough to start yawning and by the end of the story he's usually asleep. If not, and he calls us back, one of us will talk to him and he usually asks to hear the story again. If he hears the story a second time he is always asleep afterwards. We use it at nap time and bedtime. If he complains and says he doesn't want to go to bed or nap we just say Sorry but it's time for the floppy game and then start the CD right up. If he doesn't get quite right away we tell him he as to be quiet and listen to the lady so we will know what to do. He sleeps very well and even puts himself back to sleep on his own. Very rarely (maybe once every couple of months) he isn't able to go back to sleep on his own and calls us back to his room. All we have to do is talk to him a little and start the story for him and he's right back to sleep. This even worked once after a really bad dream. He woke screaming, cried in my arms for a couple of minutes. After we got him calmed and consoled, I asked if he wanted to lay down and hear the story again and he said yes and went right off to sleep. This book is a life saver for us and we will use it on our second son when he is old enough. I love the floppy game and tell parents about it all the time!

Editorial Review:

Patti Teel has created a revolutionary four-week program to help children ages 3-10 fall asleep on their own-and fall back asleep independently when they awaken during the night. "The Floppy Sleep Song" plus seven guided relaxations help parents customize a bedtime routine to send their child peacefully into a restful and rejuvenating sleep.
