Enthusiastically recommended for parents or caregivers of young children, and also an excellent baby shower gift 5 out of 5 stars.

Clinical Professor of Pediatrics Patrick C. Friman, Ph.D. shares his wisdom with sleepless parents in Good Night, Sweet Dreams, I Love You: Now Get Into Bed and Go To Sleep!, a simple guide for anyone having problems getting their children to go to bed. Chapters cover specific issues with helping children from infants to toddlers, preschoolers, elementary schoolers, middle schoolers and beyond. Written in plain terms, Good Night, Sweet Dreams, I Love You emphasizes the importance of building good sleep habits, and warns parents that children of all ages are always learning - and therefore responding to their excessive crying, defiance, attempts to leave the bedroom, and other activities with an abundance of warmth or gentleness will create positive reinforcement for the negative behavior of resisting bedtime! Good Night, Sweet Dreams, I Love You walks the reader through time-tested procedures to help children get their sleep, including "cold turky" and graduated methods for tuning out nighttime crying, and the "robotic return" method for dealing with a child who wanders out of bed (return the child silently and emotionlessly and say nothing, so as not to associate comfort or other positive responses to a child deliberately leaving the bedroom). Above all, stresses Friman, the parent must remain in control and not negotiate, discuss or argue about bedtime with a very young child; children need rules, limits, parental authority, and sleep at an early age. A brief discussion of problems such as bedwetting, night terrors, or sleepwalking rounds out this straightforward, problem-solving guide, which points parents to a list of resources for further reading as needed. Enthusiastically recommended for parents or caregivers of young children, and also an excellent baby shower gift.

Editorial Review:

An infant who wails deep into the night, a toddler who keeps popping out of bed, a young child who procrastinates long past his bedtime – does your child’s behavior give you nightmares? Many kids seem programmed from birth with bedtime behavior that frustrates and frazzles parents who have difficulty ignoring a baby’s cry or who feel guilty enforcing an early curfew for a child they haven’t seen all day. Yet getting sufficient sleep is critical for children’s health and happiness. With humor and empathy, child psychologist Dr. Patrick Friman outlines the problems related to bedtime for children from infancy through middle school and gives you advice and tips on how to handle them. In many cases, he provides several options so you can choose the approach you feel most comfortable with. His suggestions can help end those bedtime hassles and get you and your child the good night’s sleep you both need!

After a year of sleepless nights this book sorted the problem in less than a week!

The book is easy to read, either go straight to the section you need or read the whole thing for deeper understanding.

Since buying the book my son has enjoyed 12 hours sleep every night and we are getting our full 8 hours. Definitely worth the cost of the book.

An informative, straightforward book. 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was able to read this book in about 45 minutes, which is a plus for this busy mom. The information is presented in a very straightforward manner. There are helpful tips for all types of different bedtime battles, from the child who gets out of bed a million times to the child who refuses to turn off the tv to get in bed.

This book seems to be geared more towards school age children, but nevertheless, it still gave us suggestions that have benefitted my 3 year old, and his tired parents. I can't say that reading the book solved all our problems, but I will say it gave me some great ideas, especially reward and sleep pattern charts.

Appropriate for older children, not toddlers 3 out of 5 stars.

If you've already read books on helping your child sleep, this book won't tell you anything new, mainly that you need to establish a nightly bedtime routine and stick to it. It does, however, give you some options to help reinforce the bedtime routine, including a "bedtime contract" and a "bedtime hour chart".

If this is the first book you've read on sleep problems in children, it will be helpful to you if your child is old enough to read.

Unfortunately, though the books says it's "Appropriate for parents of children ages 2-12", I don't think my two-year-old can understand the concept of a contract, or what a "nightly hygiene routine" is.

Also, this book views co-sleeping as a "bad habit", so if you're an advocate of attachment parenting, this book's not for you.

Doesn't work 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The base idea for this book is to look for a "Core Night" which is the first time your baby sleeps for longer than usual. Once he does that the author says you can expect him to do it all the time by not going to him during those Core Night hours. She says the Core Night is the Secret Weapon and happens usually in the first 4 weeks. But what if you miss is? What if your baby is older than 4 weeks? And what if he cries very hard during those Core Night hours? There are a few ideas throughout the book, but I found a better one that had a more specific plan called The No Cry Sleep Solution which is for babies of all ages.

Editorial Review:

A baby who sleeps well is no accident. Parents hold the key, and this title shows how to unlock your child's natural ability to sleep through the night from the first weeks of life. It sets out a simple method that can be applied throughout childhood so that broken, disrupted nights never need be a problem. Taking the cue from the baby, and working with parents' natural instincts to help their child, this book puts parents in charge. Avoiding conflict over sleep, this recommended approach builds trust, communication, and confidence in your relationship with your baby.

this book was absolutely terrible! give my baby whiskey? NO 1 out of 5 stars.
32 of 34 people found this review helpful.

When I started reading this book, I intended to give it the benefit of the doubt, but when I got to the part where it said to put a few drops of whiskey in my baby's water bottle, I said, "FORGET IT!" I put the book down. I will never feed alcohol to my baby, nor should anyone. This book has some really erroneous thoughts to it. I realize the book is older, also, but it was scary to read that you should put your baby on his/her tummy to sleep. This book was full of bad information.

a rehash of the cry it out theme 2 out of 5 stars.

Babies and children cry for a reason, and is their first formof communication. Ignoring their cries teaches them that they aren'timportant and no one is going to care for their needs. Many desperate parents grab books like this, follow it, and have their hearts broken- in order to sleep. Babies arent' programmed to sleep through the night, something that Dr Ferber, a detached segment of our society and many non creative authors seem to have forgotten. Read "Nighttime Parenting" by William and Martha Sears, and their book on SIDS for a good understanding of sleep in babies and children.

Editorial Review:

Dreamcatching, by Alan Siegel, clinical psychologist (Dreams That Can Change Your Life), and Kelly Bulkeley, dream researcher (The Wilderness of Dreams), is for parents who are interested in finding out what their children dream about. Through dreams, parents may gain a deeper understanding of what a child is thinking, feeling, and needing. (A child, for instance, with recurrent dreams of being naked in public may be feeling self-conscious and may require special sensitivity when she's in a public situation.) Siegel and Bulkeley have suggestions for helping even very young children remember their dreams and for gaining insight into a child's dreams and nightmares by relating them to the child's waking experiences. They discuss common dream themes and ways to talk with your child about their dreams (don't over analyze, at least in front of them). They also provide an approach to nightmares: "Nightmares are more often like a vaccine than a poison ... a minute dose of a disease that mobilizes our antibodies and makes us more resistant to the virulence of the disease." Siegel and Bulkeley believe that your response can break the cycle of nightmares. Wonderful dreams from real children throughout the book enhance its worth.
