Editorial Review:

With her signature acerbic wit and captivating insight, the author of the wildly popular Straight Up and Dirty offers a powerful and beautifully stark portrait of adolescence

While she is pregnant with twins, one sentence uttered by her doctor sends Stephanie Klein reeling: "You need to gain fifty pounds." Instantly, an adolescence filled with insecurity and embarrassment comes flooding back. Though she is determined to gain the weight for the health of her babies--even if it means she'll "weigh more than a Honda"--she can only express her deep fear by telling her doctor simply, "I used to be fat."

Klein was an eighth grader with a weight problem. It was a problem at school, where the boys called her "Moose," and it was a problem at home, where her father reminded her, "No one likes fat girls." After many frustrating sessions with a nutritionist known as the fat doctor of Roslyn Heights, Long Island, Klein's parents enrolled her for a summer at fat camp. Determined to return to school thin and popular, without her "lard arms" and "puckered ham," Stephanie embarked on a memorable journey that would shape more than just her body. It would shape her life.

In the ever-shifting terrain between fat and thin, adulthood and childhood, cellulite and starvation, Klein shares the cutting details of what it truly feels like to be an overweight child, from the stinging taunts of classmates, to the off-color remarks of her own father, to her thin mother's compulsive dissatisfaction with her own body. Calling upon her childhood diary entries, Klein reveals her deepest thoughts and feelings from that turbulent, hopeful time, baring her soul and making her heartache palpable.

Whether Klein is describing her life as a chubby adolescent camper--getting weighed on a meat scale, petting past curfew, and "chunky dunking" in the lake--or what it's like now as a fit mother, having one-sided conversations with her newborn twins about the therapy they'll one day need, this hilarious yet grippingly vulnerable book will remind you what it was like to feel like an outsider, to desperately seek the right outfit, the right slang, the best comeback, or whatever that unattainable something was that would finally make you fit in.

Marie Claire, for Straight Up and Dirty
"Stephanie Klein's raw account of divorce at age 29 is refreshingly honest and funny, without delving into cheesy chick-lit territory. You'll easily relate to Klein--even if you don't have a 'wasband.'"

USA Today
"Klein is a talented writer who tells the story of her love life with boldness and irreverence."

Publishers Weekly
"Klein's sense of humor is downright wicked . . . a great, fun read."

New York Times
"Nothing, it seems, is too private not to share with . . . Ms. Klein's legions of followers. And that is exactly how they like it."

People
"You could call her `a real-life Carrie Bradshaw,' but it wouldn't do Klein justice. With a fearless voice, the blogger weaves a memoir filled with heartbreak and humor . . . a compelling writer."

Kirkus Reviews
"Candid . . . inspiring . . . With vivid characterizations, spot-on locale descriptions and sly jokes at her own expense, Klein offers an original and touching take on the all-too-common problem of childhood obesity."

Elle, for Straight Up and Dirty
"Klein's appeal comes not just from her nocturnal wonderings, but from her relentless plumbing of what went wrong in her twenties and how those mistakes inform her present."

Daily News, for Straight Up and Dirty
"[Stephanie Klein's] confessional, intimate writing style has a magnetic and often voyeuristic appeal that transcends the gloss of her Sex and the City-style escapades."

Susan Shapiro, author of Lighting Up, for Straight Up and Dirty
"A kooky, heartfelt, and ultimately triumphant chronicle of young divorce and the importance of family, friends, and a good shrink."

Marie Claire (UK), for Straight Up and Dirty
"Beneath the wisecracking tales of solo supermarket shopping, phone therapy and Hamptons houseshares, the raw emotion about her divorce and nightmare mother-in-law rings true."

I WISH I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS BOOK A LOOONG TIME AGO! RECOMMENDED BY OUR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST, IT'S GREAT FOR PARENTS WHO HAVE CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES! A MUST FOR NEW PARENTS, BECAUSE EARLY INTERVENTION IS THE KEY!! EASY TO READ, VERY INFORMATIVE, GREAT TO GO BACK & REFERENCE!!
PROUD PARENT OF A 6YR OLD WITH AUTISM!

Disorganized but some good information 2 out of 5 stars.

This book has good information, but the format is very hard to follow. With the help of a good editor, I think the authors have valuable things to share that could benefit parents and professionals working with children who have feeding difficulties. The format alone made me close the book after 20 minutes and return it to Amazon. Too bad, because the authors have a lot of experience with putting these ideas into practice with real-life children.

Editorial Review:

"Just Take a Bite" takes parents and professionals step by step through he myths about eating to the complexity of eating itself, which leads to an understanding of physical, neurological and/or psychological reason why children may not be eating as they should.

Buyer Beware 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I gave this book 2 stars because it is NOT a new book - if you already own Dr. Sears' "The Family Nutrition Book" this book is nothing but a condensed version of that book - there is *nothing* new in here. They just took verbatim parts of that book and re-arranged them to put in this book.

If you already own their other book, this book is completely useless to you. I already have [and love] "The Family Nutrition Book" and I feel like I totally wasted my money on this book.

If you have no books on nutrition, this is a good one, but "The Family Nutrition book" is better because it is more complete and thorough.

I've been irritated for the last half decade at the Sears family just "re-organizing" material from their existing books and selling it to unwary customers as something "new" [a la "The Attachment Parenting Book"]. This book is exactly the same thing.

For those of us who are "die hard fans" and buy all their books, this starts to feel like being taken advantage of after a while.

So, if you want a good, basic nutrition book and don't already have one, this book will fit the bill just fine. If you already own the other book, you will feel cheated to spend your money on this "new" one.

A little spotty 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have a ten month old daughter. I want nothing more for this beautiful little girl, than to be happy and confident. Kids are cruel, school can be brutal, and I'm hoping to get her off on the right foot with some self esteem. This book didn't really provide great advice on how to help her achieve that.

This book is more of a comprehensive guide to parenting. Much of the content is things I would have done anyway, sort of common sense parenting to those of us who care enough to read a parenting book. Many of the topics, while relavent to parenting, fail to relate back to the confidence issue I was looking for.

Having said that, there are a few good nuggets. My opinion is that this is a book that would best be checked out from a library, and not necessarily purchased for ones frequent reference.

Editorial Review:

Parents no longer have time to read long books about the theories of parenting. What they want are quick pieces of advice geared to their busy lifestyles and immediate needs. Dr. Jenn comes to the rescue with this fun yet useful book that offers 26 short chapters on everything from pets to being a sports parent to healthy relationships to food to keeping your marriage as much fun as it was before the children arrived.
Designed to be browsed or picked up from time to time for specific help, the book provides insight and guidance for any parent but focuses on those with toddlers to third grade. Upbeat, lively, and humorous, this book answers parents’ most frequent questions about how to raise a healthy, well-adjusted child. Because every chapter is only a few pages long and can stand on its own, busy parents can read what they need when they need it.

Editorial Review:

Possibly one of the most talked about books of the year, Meg Rosoff's novel for young adults is the winner of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize 2004. Heralded by some as the next best adult crossover novel since Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, who himself has given the book a thunderously good quote, this author's debut is undoubtedly stylish, readable and fascinating.

Rosoff's story begins in modern day London, slightly in the future, and as its heroine has a 15-year-old Manhattanite called Daisy. She's picked up at the airport by Edmond, her English cousin, a boy in whose life she is destined to become intricately entwined. Daisy stays at her Aunt Penn's country farmhouse for the summer with Edmond and her other cousins. They spend some idyllic weeks together--often alone with Aunt Penn away travelling in Norway. Daisy's cousins seem to have an almost telepathic bond, and Daisy is mesmerized by Edmond and soon falls in love with him.

But their world changes forever when an unnamed aggressor invades England and begins a years-long occupation. Daisy and Edmond are separated when soldiers take over their home, and Daisy and Piper, her younger cousin, must travel to another place to work. Their experiences of occupation are never kind and Daisy's pain, living without Edmond, is tangible.

Rosoff's writing style is both brilliant and frustrating. Her descriptions are wonderful, as is her ability to portray the emotions of her characters. However, her long sentences and total lack of punctuation for dialogue can be exhausting. Her narrative is deeply engaging and yet a bit unbelievable. The end of the book is dramatic, but too sudden. The book has a raw, unfinished feel about it, yet that somehow adds to the experience of reading it. (Age 14 and over) --John McLay

Timely and appealing to all ages 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Read this if you want to know what kids are thinking about this important subject. After my 13-yr-old daughter finished "Perfect" (and they are avidly passing it around at her Middle School), I did too. The writing style is short and snappy, with realistic characters. My only complaint is that I learned more than I wanted to know about the "how to"s of bulimia, such as using carbonated drinks during bingeing (but this information is probably around anywhere). The character of Trish, the girls' therapist, is the centerpiece of the book and she is written well. I hope victims of bulimia (as well as many other dysfunctional behaviors) will listen to Trish, who gives very good counsel to the girls in her teen therapy group.

Editorial Review:

Isabelle Lee has a problem, and it's not just Ape Face, her sister, or group therapy for an eating disorder, or even that her father died and her mother is depressed and in denial. It's that Ashley, the most popular girl in school, is inviting Isabelle to join her at lunch and at sleepovers at her house, and this is presenting Isabelle with a dilemma. Pretty Ashley has moved Isabelle up the social ladder, but is it worth keeping the secret they share?

Caught in the orbit of popularity and appearances, Isabelle must navigate a world with mixed messages, false hopes, and potentially harmful turns, while coping with her own flailing family and emotions. The author brings a depth of characterization, humor, and a real adolescent's voice to this multileveled story about the desire to be perfect in an imperfect world.

A Good Book Could Have Lost a Little Weight 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a good, helpful book, though a bit of a chore to slog through. There are too many sidebars, which I found disruptive, and the book seems to be written as though the author is talking to a young child, that is, simplistic, if not, sophmoric. However, what the author has to say and some of his advice and insights are very much worthwhile. I do think it may have been more effective without the "case studies;" a more straightforward account of children's relationships with foods in the early part of this century.

Editorial Review:

In a world dominated by fast food and fake food, establishing healthy eating habits in children is one of the greatest concerns for parents -- and potentially one of the greatest challenges. Fortunately, the renowned physician Dr. David Ludwig developed a proven lifestyle plan that has benefited thousands of families. Here he shares his nine-week program, offering the tools -- including tasty recipes, motivational tips, and activities -- that can help families prevent the kitchen table from becoming a battleground.

educational, unconditional, and a grand lesson for communicating 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a 29 year old adult who went through the recovery process of an eating disorder 10 years ago. Upon experiencing a reoccurrence of the disorder, I read this book. I was elated with the knowledge and kindness vibrating off the pages. I have gotten back on track thanks to Abigail. In addition to the education on Eating Disorders, I found this book a GEM on communicating. It has changed the way my husband and I speak and listen to one another, as well as our young children. It encourages family dynamics be explored to help recovery, but is it not a good lesson for all parents (families)to learn to "hear" what is said, and to what is not said. I will keep this book on my shelf as an invaluable resource for Eating Disorders, or any emotional disorder that may come up, for parenting, and for communication skills. Thank you, Abbie for your time and efforts in writting this book.

Editorial Review:

When Your Child has an Eating Disorder is the first hands-on workbook to help parents successfully intervene when they suspect their child has an eating disorder. This step-by-step guide is filled with self-tests, questions and answers, journaling and role playing exercises, and practical resources that give parents the insight they need to understand eating disorders and their treatment, recognize symptoms in their child, and work with their child toward recovery. This excellent and effective resource is one therapists can feel confident about recommending to patients.

Editorial Review:

Leslie Hiller's world is growing smaller. It used to be large enough to include her worrisome but loving mother, her doting father, her close friend Cavette, and all the other people and places that made up her upper-class, A+ life. But now it has shrunk to the size of a dinner plate full of food--which she scrapes out her bedroom window to avoid eating. Leslie, a perfectionist who loves to be in control, finds she can't control the fear that she will somehow fail to be the perfect daughter, perfect student, and perfect friend. So she decides to master the one thing over which she is certain she has complete domain: food. Even when it becomes apparent to everyone that her severe dieting has become a life-threatening habit, Leslie still can't stop: "I want to be happy. And being happy means being thin."

Author Deborah Hautzig, who recounts her own painful battle with anorexia in a very personal and heartfelt afterword, gives Leslie a frighteningly realistic voice that will ring true to teens everywhere. First published in 1981, Second Star to the Right has risen again to give a new generation of young adults valuable insight into the addictive world of anorexia, and hope for getting out from under the cruel thumb of the disease. Talk About Real!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Morgan Menzie's book was the first diary of an eating disorder I read, and is the reason why I continue to read more ED books. She unlike many ED authors talked about things other that just her eating disorder, such as relationships with friends, family and boyfriends. It's not a book that's all about anorexia but does emphasize more so than other subjects in her diary.

In her book, I believe she cover about mmm... three or four years, I really can't remember. Anyway it's a long period of time. One thing that she does that annoys the heck out of me is that she'll skip a whole month of entries but I guess that's the author's way of cutting out insignificant things.

Basically a girl named Blythe, which I think maybe be her middle name, becomes anorexic in middle school because of a friend. On of her friends begins to loose weight and Blythe decides she wants to loose to. But it goes beyond loosing weight it becomes a desire for thinness, and a fear of food.

Another thing I love about this book is Morgan keeps it so real. She said one of the- the truest thing EVER published about our human ways. It's on page 49 and is the...um... 4th paragraph I believe since the book is copy written I don't want to post it without permission. But what she says in that paragraph is so overwhelmingly true that I had to put down the book and think about my life. Although what she says is completely irrelevant to her eating disorder I couldn't write this review without reference to that paragraph.

Would I recommend it? Heck yeah! To anyone, even if you're not anorexic or never have been, even if you think the disease is stupid, anyone should get this book. Recoverees, havebeens, thinking about its and neverwillbees, get the book. You'll understand what it's like to have the disease for this one girl and may have a whole new outlook on anorexia.

Editorial Review:

Morgan Menzie takes readers through a harrowing but ultimately hopeful and inspiring account of her eating disorder. Her amazing story is told through the journals she kept during her daily struggle with this addiction and disease. Her triumphs and tragedies all unfold together in this beautiful story of God's grace.

Features include: daily eating schedule, journal entries, prayers to God, poems, and what she wished she knew at the time. It's the true story of victory over a disease that is killing America's youth.
