Editorial Review:

The remarkable increase in the prevalence of obesity among children and youth in the United States over a relatively short timespan represents one of the defining public health challenges of the 21st century. The country is beginning to recognize childhood obesity as a major public health epidemic that will incur substantial costs to the nation. However, the current level of investment by the public and private sectors still does not match the extent of the problem. There is a substantial underinvestment of resources to adequately address the scope of this obesity crisis. At this early phase in addressing the epidemic, actions have begun on a number of levels to improve the dietary patterns and to increase the physical activity levels of young people. Schools, corporations, youth-related organizations, families, communities, foundations, and government agencies are working to implement a variety of policy changes, new programs, and other interventions. These efforts, however, generally remain fragmented and small in scale. Moreover, the lack of systematic monitoring and evaluation of interventions have hindered the development of an evidence base to identify, apply, and disseminate lessons learned and to support promising efforts to prevent childhood obesity. "Progress in Preventing Childhood Obesity: How Do We Measure Up?" examines the progress made by obesity prevention initiatives in the United States from 2004 to 2006. This book emphasizes a call to action for key stakeholders and sectors to commit to and demonstrate leadership in childhood obesity prevention, evaluates all policies and programs, monitors their progress, and encourages stakeholders to widely disseminate promising practices. This book will be of interest to federal, state, and local government agencies; educators and schools; public health and health care professionals; private-sector companies and industry trade groups; media; parents; and those involved in implementing community-based programs and consumer advocacy.

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.

This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.

Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble 5 out of 5 stars.

James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."

His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!

Editorial Review:

STEPPING OUT OF THE BUBBLE: REFLECTIONS ON THE PILGRIMAGE OF COUNSELING THERAPY is the story of courage and risk taken by those who seek to better their lives. Drawing on the wisdom of those who provided a foundation for counseling theory and and practice, Krehbiel shares his expertise and wealth of experience. By sharing personal experiences, you will find encouragement to move forward in the journey toward personal growth and development.

Editorial Review:

"I keep trying to remind myself that a number on a scale doesn’t make up who I am. My weight shouldn’t control my mind, but it does. I wish everything about this eating disorder would just end, but I fear that in many ways it never will."

Alyssa Biederman’s compelling journey through anorexia began her junior year in high school. From the outside looking in, she appeared to have it all. Raised in an affluent community, Alyssa was involved in both her community and school. She was an honor roll student, on the school newspaper staff and four-year varsity letter winner in tennis.

Yet, despite her picture perfect life, this natural beauty was unable to see herself the way others did. What started as a quest to lose a couple pounds soon became a dangerous obsession.

Alyssa’s emotional struggle with anorexia is revealed in the personal journal she affectionately refers to as My Rory. Named after the friend she pushed away while battling to find herself, this journal is a heart-wrenching account of the confused inner mind of a teenage eating disorder victim.

This story is a must read for anyone suffering from an eating disorder and their family and friends wishing to understand and support them. My Rory captures a rare glimpse of the inner feelings and thoughts of both an anorexic and her family as they battle toward recovery.

Over It is memorable! 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Over It looks at cultural, emotional & physical reason why girls obsess about weight & eating, then goes on to show how it can be different. Each section guides readers toward understanding their feelings, acknowledging their fears & concerns without judgement & recasting their thoughts & habits toward a healthy self-image & eating patterns.

That said, this is not a dry book of recriminations, self-flagellations & hopeless stories; rather it is an elegant, lively, informative text book that offers you a lot to occupy your mind & a lot of different ways to look at your life.

In Amber's story you learn how compulsive eating can start; you'll see how Bulimia Nervosa took over her mind & took her off on a dangerous detour. Les' story about Anorexia Nervosa tells how it got a hold of her & wrecked her young life. Caro & Laurelee explain both disorders in clear yet clinical descriptions.

There are section about boys & eating disorders & for parents who provide the food for the family & how their lifestyles also contribute.

Carol & Laurelee have founded Beyond Hunger, a nonprofit organization, after recovering from their own eating disorders. Beyond Hunger offers support groups, workshops & education for adults & teen with eating disorders & body image disturbances. Do check out my lively eInterview with Carol & Lauralee - I think you'll be amazed!

Editorial Review:

Every year, desperate parents try to save their daughters from starving themselves to death. Yet every year, more girls eat less to look like their favorite supermodels. With this sobering fact in mind, Carol Emery Normandi and Lauralee Roark developed this book based on their ongoing workshops and the feedback of hundreds of young women. They look at the behaviors that may lead to eating disorders and the cultural, emotional, and physical reasons girls obsess about weight and eating. They go on to offer girls and their parents a map and a method for finding a realistic and livable balance. Stories and quotations from girls who have struggled with eating disorders give the book immediacy, and exercises and writing suggestions steer girls toward a healthy self-image and wholesome eating patterns.

Editorial Review:

Anorexia Nervosa and other eating disorders are arguably the most complex mental health problems that a child or adolescent may experience. Numbers seeking help are on the increase, and the complexity of these disorders challenges even the most experienced clinician. In this timely book, the experience of numerous practitioners with international reputations in the field is brought to bear on the broad range of issues a good clinician needs to know about, including the history of the disorder through to treatment, psychopharmacology, the psychotherapies, epidemiology, comorbidities, eating disorders in boys and neuroimaging. The book is divided into parts detailing the scientific underpinnings, abnormal states, the evidence base for treatments and finally public health issues, including service delivery models and perspectives on prognosis and outcomes. Clinicians encountering eating disorders will find this latest addition to the Cambridge Child and Adolescent Psychiatry series invaluable.

Editorial Review:

After a year of trouble and turmoil, Nikki Sheridan's life seems to be settling down-until she discovers a dangerous secret!

A two-week trip to a music festival in the Blue Ridge Mountains with Aunt Marta and Carly sounded so great. But Carly, who's usually so fun to be with, is wrecking everything. She's moody and irritable all the time. Seems like every time I say something she bites my head off!

And that's not all. She's so obsessed with exercise, dieting, makeup, and clothes. Not to mention the "Ultimate Thirty-Day Makeover" from her fashion magazine. Even if I followed all those beauty tips, I still wouldn't turn heads the way Carly does.

Why can't she just accept herself the way she is? I'd love to look like her. Instead, I'm just a boring stick-in-the-mud. Lord, help me to be happy being me.

Nikki has always admired Carly's popularity, strong Christian faith, and great family. So when Carly suddenly becomes crabby and dissatisfied with herself, Nikki can't make any sense of it. Why is Carly so unhappy? And what can Nikki do to help?
