Anorexia and Bulimia, but not Binge. 3 out of 5 stars.

Janet Bode, Food Fight (Simon and Schuster, 1997)

I never realized how many books there are about children and eating disorders until I went looking for them. Among them, Food Fight stands out because it's the only one I've found so far that's actually written for the children, rather than the parents.

Unfortunately, as I am finding seems to be the case with most books of this nature, the author defines "eating disorders" quite narrowly as anorexia and bulimia, only mentioning binge eating disorder in passing a time or two.

Thus, this may well be an excellent book for children with those diseases (and their parents), but for parents of children with other eating disorders, its use will be questionable. ** ½

Editorial Review:

"Do you think I'm too fat?"

Maybe you know someone who thinks she needs to lose a few pounds. And then a few more. Maybe she exercises until she's exhausted. Being skinny makes her feel great. Or maybe you know someone who eats in secret and just can't stop. She eats. And eats. And eats. And then she throws up. Maybe she hates her body. Maybe she hates herself.

This might sound like someone you know -- or it might sound like you. If so, you could have an eating disorder. Left untreated, eating disorders can cause serious health problems and may even result in death.

Here, in their own words, are the stories of preteens suffering from anorexia and bulimia. Noted author Janet Bode describes symptoms, causes, and ways to deal with these illnesses and includes a resource guide for where to turn for help. This is a book for young people, their parents, their teachers, and other concerned adults. It's a book that can help children and their families survive.

Editorial Review:

Through the voices of twenty-one women, Karen Way presents the most objective, complete, and compassionate picture of what anorexia nervosa is about and, more importantly, of the complex individual variables and obstacles in the journey to recovery. From the premise that anorexia nervosa is an addiction--an obsession controlling all aspects of an individual?s life--and that complete recovery is possible by finding meaning in life, this enlightening book contrasts sharply to other books written on the subject by clinicians and theorists which merely speculate on the nature and etiology of anorexia nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa and Recovery lets the reader hear the personal struggles of women who have fought this powerful disease. They describe how anorexia controlled their lives and how, once they overcame their obsessions with food, weight, and thinness, they were able to lead fulfilling lives.

This illuminating book encourages and inspires women who are in the throes of anorexia nervosa. They will recognize the emptiness in the voices and the descriptions of daily life. Therapists and clinicians who treat anorexic women will find intriguing chapters on events which trigger anorexia and what anorexics will do to maintain their strategies for coping. Concerned friends and family and others interested in understanding this controlling disease will be enlightened from this important and helpful book.

Editorial Review:

The prevention of eating disorders is a relatively young field but one that is gaining momentum. The growing interest in prevention relates to the increased incidence of individuals suffering from eating disorders and the severe complications associated with these disorders. Moreover, eating difficulties and extreme preoccupation with weight and shape, which do not fit the complete diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, occur in even larger numbers.

This text, complete with a variety of prevention strategies, programs, and approaches, is designed for health and mental health workers, educators, researchers, students, and interested members of the community at large who wish to prevent eating disorders and related problems (e.g., negative body image). Building bridges between academic and community-based knowledge and activism, this book describes prevention at the societal, institutional, familial, and individual levels, and focuses on increasing resilience and protective factors as well as reducing the vulnerability to disordered eating.

This text begins with prevention efforts with larger societal institutions and norms (e.g., international social policies and the mass media) and with more circumscribed purveyors of values (e.g., parents). With emphasis on self-concept, relationships, and other developmental challenges, the text continues with an examination of efforts with elementary and middle school children prior to and during the early stages of developing unhealthy attitudes and practices. The developmental needs of high school and college students (including those in athletics and in sororities) are then discussed in terms of programs designed to promote healthy lifestyles and to enhance critical thinking and empowerment. The approaches described in this innovative and informative new text rely on the knowledge derived from careful attention to varied life experiences rather than a limiting clinical sample.

Special challenges for preventionposed by high-risk populations (e.g., elite athletes, ballet dancers, and youth with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus) are addressed along with the special challenge faced by professionals (including physicians) working towards early identification of eating disorders. The text concludes with an examination of the key themes and issues in prevention and specific recommendations for future development in the critical field of prevention.

With a strong connection between theory and research, an interesting and useful blend of prevention programs, strategies, and measures, a skilled group of editors and contributors, this book will be of valuable interest to professional and students from various disciplines of health education, mental health, and counseling, as well as teachers, coaches, and school personnel, dietitians, parents and all who care about the prevention of eating disorders.

Editorial Review:

A child's incessant screaming, spitting, and food throwing during mealtime are enough to frustrate any parent or caregiver! Continuous resistance to eating not only leads to malnourishment, but physical and intellectual developmental become additional concerns. Invariably, the underlying reason(s) for refusing to eat will differ from child to child, so the focus should be on improving or resolving the eating problem. This is a two-part book written for caregivers and professionals who work with children with feeding problems. It presents behavioral interventions and approaches on solving a child's resistance to eating. * Part One was specifically written for teachers, parents, and caregivers with no prior professional experience or training on feeding problems. * Part Two was written for professionals, providing detailed information on how to apply behavioral assessment and developing individualized interventions based on a child's eating behaviors. The behavioral interventions and procedures presented in this book can also be integrated into oral motor or dysphagia therapy. Includes references and brief descriptions.

Editorial Review:

Within the past two generations alone, child and adolescent obesity has more than doubled for some age groups and tripled for others. Consequently, the extraordinary number of school-age children now being diagnosed with what were once considered adult-onset disorders – hypertension, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and related cardio-pulmonary conditions – has catapulted pediatric obesity to the forefront of national attention. Yet even as recognition grows, reliable, scientifically tested information and methods often get lost in the media crush of quick fixes and hyped-up news stories.

Now, in one comprehensive, easy-to-access volume, the Handbook of Childhood and Adolescent Obesity reveals the scope of the problem in terms of its psychological burden, its health consequences, and the available prevention and treatment options with the most current empirical and clinical knowledge available. This volume provides readers not only raw data, but also a framework for translating findings into effective, efficient practice – assessment, treatment, and prevention. This volume:

  • Emphasizes developmental considerations – the specific information most relevant to toddlers, school-age children, and adolescents.
  • Examines sociocultural and economic risk factors and their attendant treatment issues.
  • Addresses the particular challenges of treating overweight children with psychiatric comorbidities.
  • Discusses weight management intervention strategies in home, school, and community settings.
  • Outlines model intervention programs for overweight/obese children and youth.
  • Features special chapters on emerging topics of interest, including behavioral genetics, binge eating, technology-based approaches to weight control, and the concept of the obesigenic environment.

The Handbook of Childhood and Adolescent Obesity is a vital reference for child psychologists and psychiatrists as well as school and counseling psychologists, social workers, educators, and public health and medical professionals.
