Editorial Review:

In the third edition of this accessible and comprehensive book, Bryan Lask and Rachel Bryant-Waugh build on the research and expertise of the previous two editions. First published in 1993, this was the earliest book of its kind to explore eating disorders in people under 15, a population that is very distinct from those in their late teens and adulthood.

The contributors' experience and knowledge has increased greatly in the past 15 years. This fully revised edition offers a distillation of current information in the younger population, and contains brand new chapters on areas of research and practice such as:

  • eating disorders and the brain
  • nutrition and refeeding
  • motivational approaches.

Eating Disorders in Childhood and Adolescence offers the reader knowledge, perception and understanding of this fascinating but challenging patient group. It has both a clinical and research focus and will be an essential text for a wide range of professionals, as well as being readable for parents of children suffering from eating disorders.

Why bother? 1 out of 5 stars.

Maggie: Diary two, written by Ann M. Martin, was honestly not as enjoyable as I expected. When I first heard about this book I expected to go into the mind of Maggie, but that's not what happened. Instead I got a grocery list of what she ate that day and a page on how she has a crush on her band mate, Justin Randall. I mean do I really care about EXACTLY what she ate? For example, she shared that she had a "half tuna sandwich (NO MAYO)".
The book is basically about a girl whose mother is an alcoholic and whose father is a big time guy in Hollywood. She has a brother named Zeke, and that's about it; there really wasn't much else to the story. The only plot was, she thought she was fat so went anorexic, and along the way told about her job and secret crush.
This book was also a waste of time because it was so predictable. The whole book she goes on and on about how she worries about her mother drinking at this benefit, well surprise, surprise...she does, and gets drunk. And then, she complains about her father and once again, here's a big surprise, she gets in a fight with him. And finally, she admits to her problem and everyone lives happily ever after. But that's not all; her negativity is so amazingly annoying. On almost every entry, she complains. Whether she's complaining about her weight, her job, her friends, her parents, her brother, or her date, she just HAS to get something bad out of it. To prove this, she actually says, "I'm fat, I can't sing, I CAN'T keep my grades up, I AM UGLY!" Finally, this whole story just seems fake, being she's the daughter of a famous man living in Hollywood and wants to be thin, and so cliché that's it's simply just a waste of time and effort.

Editorial Review:

Maggie's got an eating disorder, and it's getting worse. This acclaimed contemporary series has been the subject of articles in "Publishers Weekly", the "Chicago Tribune", and "New York Newsday".

Editorial Review:

Feeding an infant or toddler a varied, healthful diet is one of the most important - and often most challenging - tasks of early parenting. The research tells us that most parents and children learn this dance well - and their children transition smoothly from breast and bottle feeding to solid foods and a sound family diet. But an increasing number of parents and children falter, resulting in poor eating habits for a lifetime.Developed by national and international child health and nutrition experts, the new "Eating Behaviors of the Young Child" represents the most recent advances in knowledge of the factors that influence early eating patterns. Designed for pediatricians and other child health care professionals who treat children, this handy resource provides educational tools for parents and caregivers to help children develop healthier eating behaviors during their early years of life. The topics addressed include: Breastfeeding vs Bottle; The Transition to Table Food; Food Preferences Among Young Children; Cultural Influences on Children's Food Preferences; Changes in Eating Environments; and Intervening to Prevent Obesity and Shape Healthy Diets.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this special issue of The ANNALS inspects the social problem of childhood obesity from various angles and uses empirically based, creative suggestions for overcoming and preventing unhealthy lifestyles. The authors of this special issue include health care practitioners, social scientists, philanthropists, advocates, and policy makers who understand that this is a complex issue made up of a myriad of factors.

The editors have both worked in the field for fifteen years and have unrivalled experience of this particular population. The contributors are all clinicians or researchers with whom they have worked over the years and each brings a unique experience of their own area of expertise.
