Editorial Review:

As we enter the new millennium, promoting sound mental health and positive behavior of adolescents has undeniably taken on greater significance than ever before. To that end, more and more research is confirming what many have suspected for years: environment and community surroundings have a major affect on an adolescent’s well-being and overall mental health. And because no single causal agent triggers teenage pathology—and no one-size-fits-all treatment is available—the Handbook of Adolescent Behavior Problems offers a comprehensive and integrative biopsychosocial approach to effective practice.

This volume examines not only the psychological and genetic factors underlying dysfunction, it also explores the critical roles that family members, peers, and the larger community play in an adolescent’s life. It offers current interdisciplinary perspectives on adolescent development, both functional and pathological, and provides coverage that is clear, accessible, and practical on such topics as:

  • Major disorders, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, ADHD, PTSD, developmental delays, and conduct disorders.
  • Behavior problems, such as substance abuse, sexual offenses, teen pregnancy, school failure, gambling, and gang violence.
  • Best practices, reviewing what works (i.e., interventions that have been rigorously validated), what might work (i.e., those in need of further study), and what doesn’t work.
  • Residential interventions as well as community treatment.
  • Risk and resiliency factors.
  • Ongoing and emerging pharmaceutical issues.

Each chapter focuses on a specific behavior or disorder and is formatted to help readers quickly locate needed information.

The Handbook of Adolescent Behavior Problems provides a solid foundation for understanding the adolescent experience and the influence of the family and community as well as much-needed information on the development of evidence-based practices. It is designed to be a one-stop reference for anyone working with adolescents—developmental psychologists, clinical and school psychologists, and education specialists as well as for graduate students in these areas.

Editorial Review:

In this volume, a well-known psychoanalyst, dance therapist, and educational consultant chronicles her clinical work with deeply troubled children who fall between the cracks of our diagnostic and educational systems. These children, who frequently turn out to have been sexually or punitively abused, have no real emotional home despite the fact that they live in materially comfortable circumstances. In spite of their apparent brightness and precocity, they do not thrive in the classroom, where their disruptive behavior, tendency to act out, and fragmented learning bring them to the attention of teachers, counselors, and school psychologists. Standard diagnoses do not explain their plight; such children are neither retarded nor learning disabled nor neurotic.

Through poignant case studies, Siegel reviews the developmental circumstances that bring these middle-class waifs to a critical impasse with both their parents and the educational establishment. Time and again she discovers that the children's expectable developmental course has been derailed by their accommodation to parental abuse and deformed parental expectations. Psychodynamic treatment invariably uncovers the maladaptive solutions that fueled the children's behavioral and learning disturbances.

This volume speaks to a broad clinical and non-clinical readership: psychoanalytic clinicians; psychologists; counselors; social workers; art, dance, and music therapists; special education teachers; child therapists; and child care workers. They will all join in admiration of Siegel's treatment approach which focuses on what is healthy in deeply traumatized children and, in so doing, helps debunk the myth of the untreatable child.

What a great book, no dieting just healthy eating! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

My mother bought this for me to use for my daughter. I hated the thought of a "dieting" 10 year old, but this book helped to stress exercising and good alternative nibbling. Teaching not only my daughter but myself how to understand about nutritious meals. It explained how our body uses fats in such an understandable way. My daughter knows that she is feeling better eating a little differently than she has in the past with the added bonus of her parents feeling more active than we had in years.

Best book on nutrition for the family. 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book several years ago and I continually open it to get my kids back on track. It is simply the best nutritional guide for kids on the market. I have read many nutritional books and this one far surpasses them all. The only thing that I find wrong with the book is the title. It is misleading. The book is less about weight control and more about information a family needs to know about living a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition. The great part about Klein's writing is how he deals with the effects of eating unhealthful has on the mind of our children. In a time when we are in a hurry to label our kids as having A.D.D. and pumping them full of drugs, this book is a welcome relief. It deals with children's behavior as effected through bad nutrition. The greatest thing about this book is the responsibility it puts on parents also living a healthy lifestyle and lead through example. Even though Klein doesn't put it as bluntly as myself, our kids are getting more and more unhealthy and we are to blame. This book is a must buy for your kids if you want them to grow up to be healthy individuals.

The great thing about Keith Klein as a writer is that he sticks to the facts and doesn't preach his knowledge. It is just great information given to you in black and white. Most people don't know that Keith Klein has been a consultant to many books or programs written on Nutrition including most of Bill Phillips' "Eating for Life" books.
