Editorial Review:

Is your child overweight? Do you worry about the effects of excess weight on the health and self-esteem of your family's youngest and most vulnerable members? If so, you are not alone. Weight problems among children have now reached epidemic proportions. And its no wonder. High-calorie fast foods and soft drinks are everywhere, and they are heavily promoted in many of the 40,000 TV commercials that kids watch every year. A nationally recognised expert on child obesity, Dr. Roa uses the latest and best medical evidence available to show you how to help your child avoid or overcome this prevalent and dangerous health problem. In the first part, he gives you the knowledge you need to understand the scope of the problem. In the second part, he carefully explains a rational approach to helping your child achieve or maintain a healthy weight, including the science of changing people's behaviour. Dr. Roa makes it clear that despite all the talk about 'low-carb' and other fad diets, there are no magic bullets for treating childhood obesity. But the good news is that armed with the right information, parents can reverse this dangerous trend and succeed in helping their children become fit, trim and happy.

Anorexia and Bulimia, but not Binge. 3 out of 5 stars.

Janet Bode, Food Fight (Simon and Schuster, 1997)

I never realized how many books there are about children and eating disorders until I went looking for them. Among them, Food Fight stands out because it's the only one I've found so far that's actually written for the children, rather than the parents.

Unfortunately, as I am finding seems to be the case with most books of this nature, the author defines "eating disorders" quite narrowly as anorexia and bulimia, only mentioning binge eating disorder in passing a time or two.

Thus, this may well be an excellent book for children with those diseases (and their parents), but for parents of children with other eating disorders, its use will be questionable. ** ½

Editorial Review:

"Do you think I'm too fat?"

Maybe you know someone who thinks she needs to lose a few pounds. And then a few more. Maybe she exercises until she's exhausted. Being skinny makes her feel great. Or maybe you know someone who eats in secret and just can't stop. She eats. And eats. And eats. And then she throws up. Maybe she hates her body. Maybe she hates herself.

This might sound like someone you know -- or it might sound like you. If so, you could have an eating disorder. Left untreated, eating disorders can cause serious health problems and may even result in death.

Here, in their own words, are the stories of preteens suffering from anorexia and bulimia. Noted author Janet Bode describes symptoms, causes, and ways to deal with these illnesses and includes a resource guide for where to turn for help. This is a book for young people, their parents, their teachers, and other concerned adults. It's a book that can help children and their families survive.

Raising Children Free of Food & Weight Problems 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Eat when you are hungry, eat foods of your own choosing, and stop when you are full. That's the well-done message of these two authors, both of whom have experience with patients with eating disorders and compulsive eating.

These expert authors go over the "myths" of eating -- every meal must be balanced; if you eat now you'll spoil your appetite; you must finish what is on your plate -- in relation to how they affect our attitudes toward food.

Good case histories, anecdotes, and practical advice to make mealtime a pleasure again for all family members! Has one chapter on anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating for those interested in those subjects.

Great approach to preventing food problems in children! 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a compulsive overeater and was really pleased that one of the authors of "Overcoming Overeating" had teamed up with another to give us their approach on avoiding food problems. With a 15 month old, I wanted to know what I could do to help my son avoid the same weight/food problems I've always had.

Bucking the conventional wisdom, their advice to feed when/where/what children want has a truth to it that feels very right to me. When you remove the mystic and allure of sweets and "forbidden" foods, they no longer are a scarcity to be consumed endlessly when they're finally available.

Now I understand why the eating disorder specialist I know has all kinds of foods (including candy) in her house for her 3 children.

My only complaint is that the sections on babies could use a little updating. Breastfeeding, including extended breastfeeding, are much more the norm nowadays and the book almost assumes that a bottle is being used. Only cursory attention is given to the role of breastfeeding in a baby or toddler's diet.

Great book, and hopefully a few years from now I'll be able to tell you how well it's working for my family!

Understanding Compulsive Behavior 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Many children who grew up in an alcoholic families attempt to cope with the pain through behaviors which are potentially addictive.

This groundbreaking book is the first to explain why children of alcoholics are especially prone to developing the addictive illness of compulsive eating. Therapists Barbara McFarland and Tyeis Baker-Baumann, experts in the treatment of compulsive eating, take a thorough and insightful look at the relationship between compulsive eating and adult children of alcoholic issues. They reveal the following four factors which, if present in the alcoholic home, may foster eating disorders:

*Alcoholism has progressed far enough that it twarts the child's ability to develop trust, self-esteem, interpersonal skills, and a solid personal identitiy.

*The family uses food to comfort and console, or views weight/apperances as signpost identity.

*The child receives "mixed messages" about his or her parents' traditional sex roles.

*The child adopts certain roles within the alcoholic family system.

Feeding the Empty Heart not only offers an understanding of the problem of eating disorders in adult children of alcoholics, it also outlines effective treatment options, describes the recovery process and shares personal stories that make poignantly clear the struggles - and rewards - that lie along the way to recovery. -- from book's back cover

Best in class, but still not great 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There are a lot of YA books out there set in inpatient psychiatric treatment, especially for eating disorders -- enough so that it's almost a sub-genre of its own at this point. And as books in this category go, this one has a lot going for it -- there are some compelling characters, the book goes well beyond the obvious cliches, and the hospital staff and treatment process are portrayed more realistically than in most books.

All that said, there were two things about this book that I really disliked:

1) A large chunk of the "plot" is just Janie (the main character) not telling the reader things that she knows. Especially when a book is written in 1st person, I find this a really old trick -- there is so much room here for a real plot that there's really no excuse for this.

2) Probably because of the above, the ending seems artificially quick and easy.

Editorial Review:

Janie Ryman hates throwing up. So why does she binge eat and then stick her fingers down her throat several times a day? That’s what the doctors and psychiatrists at Golden Slopes hope to help her discover. But first Janie must survive everyday conflicts between the Barfers and the Starvers, attempts by the head psychiatrist to fish painful memories out of her emotional waters, and shifting friendships and alliances among the kids in the ward.
