Editorial Review:

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally and presents a major challenge to policy makers and clinicians alike. Recent  research has suggested that obesity has its origins in early life and that early diet can programme a developing fetus’ and young infant’s future susceptibility to obesity.  This volume contains recent findings presented at the International Conference on Early Nutrition Programming and Health Outcomes in Later Life: Obesity and Beyond - a satellite meeting of the 15th European Congress on Obesity, held in Budapest in April 2007. Basic scientific research, data from epidemiological studies and clinical trial results were all presented during the programme.

This volume includes articles discussing the evidence for an effect of early nutrition programming on later obesity and cardiovascular risk; the growing evidence for an intergenerational cycle of obesity; the role of maternal leptin in programming appetite; possible cellular mechanisms for altered energy balance, including mitochondrial programming and the effects of regulators of metabolism; and how epigenetic changes might be the fundamental underlying mechanism explaining programming effects. Consumer understanding of the concept of early nutrition programming and the extent to which early nutrition programming is taken into account in infant feeding policies are also discussed.

Remedial discussion of a sensitive subject 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

The book offers an excellent basic discourse on exercise addiction as it relates to the typical victim: teens and young adults. However, the subject is more broad and destructive in an adult population fixated on self and perfection at any cost. This is unfortunately not discussed in this book. But again, for the right audience it is excellent.

For the uninitiated the book does provide a good primer for understanding a potentially life treatening and destructive behavior. The real lacking, however, is information on how the behavior can (and does) destroy the lives of relatives and relations of the victim. By the way, the victim never sees themself as being a victim. (IRONIC) In a nutshell, there is no difference between a fixation with the local running club (exercise addict) and hanging with the guys (or gals) at the local bar (alcoholic) since in these circles a destructive behavior is socially acceptable. More importantly, these environs do not judge the behavior, and in fact may actually encourage more of the behavior as a matter of social indoctrination and demonstrated devotion. It's alot like a cult. Like most addictions, exercise addiction frequently requires an enabling environment where people with similar values and behavior exist. In the 'group' there is no problem. Sadly, the solution is not in those circles but in the care of those who love the victims: their families and true friends. Often, as in the case of anorexia and other eating disorders, TRUTH is the sure thing that will drive the person away from those who can help. Recovery is a long and gentile process so never 'shock' intervene with these individuals because to do so risks severing the ties of the personal relationship. Separation can be permenant because, when forced to chose between the addiction and close personal relationships (father, mother, sibling, husband, wife, etc.), the grossly addicted will frequently chose the addiction.

The exercise addiction phenomenon is becoming epidemic and is a sad commentary on the basic degradation in our modern culture. Third world nations should only wish to have enough leisure to participate in such vain behaviors. They starve while we deny ourselves nutrition and purge remaining calories though compulsive exercise. I wish I knew the answer to this paradox.

Editorial Review:

Focuses on exercise addiction and its relationship to eating disorders; explains how compulsive exercise can be harmful and how one can get help to deal with it.

Eh. Overall, Good Common Sense Ideas, but reservations 3 out of 5 stars.

I just read through this book for an hour or so... didn't read everything, obviously, but got the gist, I think.

I like the book's sensible approach to MODERATION in both food & fitness. Baby steps, which is right on the money.

I also enjoyed reading the book's suggestions on how to discuss weight sensitively with children of different age groups, and also how to approach mealtimes without creating problems later down the line for the child.

My problem, however, is with the nutritional advice. This book is all about low-fat everything, despite being edited in 2001. Haven't we gotten past the old "all fat is bad fat" stance of the early 90's? This book is constantly suggesting we feed our children empty carbs like pretzels, bagels, fat-free chips, etc. UGH!!

While I am not an Atkins junkie, I try to keep up-to-date on nutrition and I believe simple sugars such as those described contribute to weight gain as much (or possibly even more) than our old enemy, fat. Furthermore, there are good, heart-healthy fats out there that kids should be encouraged to eat: nuts, avocado, seeds, etc. Unfortunately, this book makes no mention of this.

The suggested diets in this book, then, seem to me less than ideal for supporting weight loss while keeping the child satisfied (as is one of their "Rights of Chidren" addressed early on in the book). How can a kid be expected to be sated when his/her belly is full of empty carbs? I wouldn't be surprised that children would feel denied on such low-fat diets, and then overcompensate on fatty snacks when out of parental control.

I'd like to see a book that recommends a whole-foods snack like nuts 'n berries, as opposed to one touting the benefits of a pack of low fat crackers and some non-fat cheese spread.

Finally, on the topic of exercise... while this book includes LOTS of suggestions for working physical activity into a child's daily routine, I was hoping it would cover age-appropriate exercise goals for children. That is, how far/long is it healthy for a preschool child to walk? A school-age child? When is a good age to begin strength training, and what are some safety guidelines? etc. This information does not appear to be included in this book, which is unfortunate.

But again, I did like the overall tone of this book. It's very encouraging and also drives home how we as parents need to model healthy eating & exercise habits at home, for our children to grow up strong & fit. Cheers!

Editorial Review:

Offers parents a wide range of weight-loss solutions for youngsters of all ages that will not damage a child's self-esteem or stunt growth, sharing advice on creating a nutritious, low-fat diet, bolstering self-esteem, increasing exercise, and more.

Editorial Review:

As America has grown into a heavier, more sedentary nation, so have its kids.

20 millionon--fully one-quarter--of American children are overweight, with 11% severely obese.

36% of our children aged 2 to 19 have high cholesterol.

66% of 5- to 17-year-olds fail to meet minimum fitness criteria.

Knowing what he does about the connection between diet, exercise, and health, lay expert Joseph C. Piscatella is alarmed. Author of Don't Eat Your Heart Out Cookbook and other books for adults with over 2 million copies in print, Mr. Piscatella now turns to motivating parents to reverse the dangerous trend of overweight, out-of-shape kids. A compelling, comprehensive source book and diet and exercise guide, Fat-Proof Your Child spells out the whys of the problemo--from too much fast food to too much television, diminishing Phys Ed programs to inexcusably fatty school lunches--then offers easy-to-implement solutions that will get not only kids but also parents back on the right track.

Here are 7 Basics that will improve a child's food habits; the Activity Pyramid for children and adolescents; up-to-date research on fat, sugar, salt, and fiber; and, from his wife, Bernie, over 100 recipes that modify favorite family dishes.
