An Excellent Resource for Clinicians! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book for clinicians treating teens struggling with Anorexia. This model taps into the power of the family to successfully fight this horrible disorder. I also highly recommend Help Your Teenager Beat An Eating Disorder, a well-written guide for the clinician and an outstanding resource for parents!!

Editorial Review:

This practical manual offers a step-by-step guide to the treatment of anorexia nervosa in adolescents. Unique in its focus on mobilizing parents and siblings as a resource in treatment, the approach is ideal for short-term treatment and has demonstrated effectiveness in controlled clinical trials. Intervention is divided into three clearly defined phases. Using such innovative methods as a family meal, the clinician first learns strategies for helping families gain immediate control over the adolescent's eating behaviors. Once the patient accepts parental demands to eat, related family problems are addressed in the second phase. The third and final phase of treatment aims toward getting adolescent development back on track and establishing family relationships that do not revolve around the eating disorder. Featuring detailed guidelines for conducting each family session, the manual is illustrated with extensive clinical transcripts and vignettes.

Kudos to Carlson for a job well done 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

FADED DENIM is book number 9 in the TRUE COLORS SERIES by Melody Carlson, and it is definitely high on the best list. Carlson tackles some tough subjects here: namely, eating disorders, and she does it in a very thought-provoking and moving way.

Emily has put on some weight in the last year, and in the meantime her friend Leah has lost some, and is headed on her way to be America's next Top Model. Seriously. And Emily is getting really jealous. Emily's dad keeps commenting on her weight problem, and as she watches Leah slip into a world of glamour and beauty, Emily wants it for herself. First she tries some simple dieting and exercise. But the weight isn't coming off fast enough. Soon Emily turns to much more drastic measures to put off the weight, taking her down a path that could ruin her life, and possibly end it.

FADED DENIM picks up all the pieces and creates a very moving story. There are some beautiful moments near the end that will make the reader really stop and think. And the best part is, Emily's path toward an eating disorder feels completely real. Carlson has captured what it really feels like to struggle with an eating disorder, and she doesn't resolve things easily with ribbon and string. It's a hard journey that will definitely leave a mark on the reader. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Emily faces an uphill battle against unrealistic body image and eating disorders. A serious issue affecting girls everywhere presented in fiction form. Includes discussion questions.

Here's the deal. You are in the biggest, most important growth spurt of your life. This is the most critical time for you to learn to eat right and treat your body with the respect –– and the nutrition –– it deserves.

––from The Diet for Teenagers Only

Teenage girls face a relentless assault on their self–esteem: television, the Internet, and magazines all barrage young women with images of perfection –– and that perfection is closely linked with being thin. Sadly, research shows that only 14 percent of teenage girls are happy with their body shape and size. More than half of them think they should lose weight. And most shocking of all, obesity among teenagers has tripled in the last decade alone. Young people are victims not only of poor self–esteem and eating disorders, but also of larger health issues.

In The Diet for Teenagers Only , Carrie Wiatt and Barbara Schroeder give teenagers the dietary weapons they need to fight back and make smart, independent decisions about nutrition. Written in a conversational, lighthearted voice, but filled with practical tips and must–have information, The Diet for Teenagers Only is a breakthrough diet plan specifically tailored to fit teenage needs and lifestyles. Among the essential ingredients of this diet you'll find:

  • color cutouts of favorite foods that clarify what portion sizes should look like;

  • recommended 7–day meal plans for different calorie needs –– and create–your–own–menu options;

  • easy–to–follow recipes and grocery shopping tips that inspire teenagers to take nutrition into their own hands;

  • a complete illustrated exercise program to complement weight–loss efforts, boost energy, and strengthen young bodies; and

  • a personal food diary for charting daily progress.

For teenagers who struggle with food and their weight, or for those who simply want a head start on designing a smart and satisfying food lifestyle, no other diet book will do. The Diet for Teenagers Only serves up fun, safe, and inspirational ways for teenagers to lose weight and be healthy, while never losing sight of the larger picture: While striving to improve your body can be a very healthy goal, learning to love your body is a far more important achievement –– and one that will last a lifetime!

A source of hope and valuable information for parents of children with eating disorders

This poignant and informative narrative relates how one mother rescued her daughter from the "experts" and treated the girl's life-threatening anorexia using a controversial approach. Known as the Maudsley Approach, this home-based, family-centered therapy, developed in Great Britain in the 1980s, has been receiving a lot of press here over the past few years. While it has been widely used in Europe for many years and is rapidly gaining acceptance among parents and within the pediatric and child psychiatric communities in the United States, until now, there were no popular books on the subject. Must-reading for parents of children with eating disorders, Eating with Your Anorexic is:

  • The first popular book on an increasingly popular approach to curing eating disorders
  • A source of practical information and guidance for parents of children with eating disorders
  • An eloquent narrative filled with pathos that inspires, empowers, and informs

Editorial Review:

Childhood is a pivotal time for good nutrition. Organs and blood streams nurtured with junk food cannot build a foundation for good health and longevity as an adult. Drs. Joseph Mercola and Ben Lerner believe profound inactivity, addiction to electronic media, and diets of super-sized fast food and sugar-laden beverages have created a national emergency. Generation XL is a clarion call and a detailed guide to giving your child a vibrant, successful future and a healthy, wholesome, invigorating youth.

As children riddled with pain, illness, learning disorders, and even depression begin to show up everywhere, rather than looking at brain development, nutrition, and lack of movement as the culprits, concerned parents are turning to more and more medications. Think about that. Is that how we were designed? To make medication a way of life and to be drugged early on a consistent basis?

What does the future hold for us when kids are overweight, out of shape, and taking medications for the effects? What kind of children are we creating?

This is not a diet book-far, far from it. Dropping another diet book into the same culture will do nothing but take up more room on your shelf. Generation XL shows you how kids were created to eat, breathe, sleep, run, and live. At the same time, Drs. Mercola and Lerner help you change your family culture and recognize where the culture around you isn't working so you can avoid it or help to change it.

Since prevention is always easier (and wiser) than cure, incorporating the lifestyle changes suggested in Generation XL gives your child a realistic way to reach and maintain a healthy weight; dramatically reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other health risks; and build a strong body and positive mental attitude, maximizing his or her IQ and giving the best chance for success.

Editorial Review:

The Parent's Guide to Eating Disorders shows that effective solutions begin at home and cost little more than a healthy investment of time, effort, and love. Based on exciting new research, it differs from similar books in several key ways. Instead of concentrating on the grim, expensive hospital stays of patients with severe disorders, the authors focus on the family, teaching parents how to examine and understand their family’s approach to food and body-image issues and its effect their child’s behavior. Parents learn to identify an eating disorder early, to establish healthy attitudes toward food at a young age, and to intervene in a nonthreatening, nonjudgmental way. The authors concentrate on teens, the age group most often affected by eating disorders, as well as younger children. Individual chapters cover boys at risk, relapse training, dealing with friends, school, and summer camp, and much more. The book includes an appendix and sections on further reading, organizations and websites, residential and hospital programs, and references.

A Good Book Could Have Lost a Little Weight 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a good, helpful book, though a bit of a chore to slog through. There are too many sidebars, which I found disruptive, and the book seems to be written as though the author is talking to a young child, that is, simplistic, if not, sophmoric. However, what the author has to say and some of his advice and insights are very much worthwhile. I do think it may have been more effective without the "case studies;" a more straightforward account of children's relationships with foods in the early part of this century.

Editorial Review:

In a world dominated by fast food and fake food, establishing healthy eating habits in children is one of the greatest concerns for parents -- and potentially one of the greatest challenges. Fortunately, the renowned physician Dr. David Ludwig developed a proven lifestyle plan that has benefited thousands of families. Here he shares his nine-week program, offering the tools -- including tasty recipes, motivational tips, and activities -- that can help families prevent the kitchen table from becoming a battleground.

Editorial Review:

Living in a culture obsessed with body size and shape, it can be hard to feel good about the way you look. But eating disorders caused by unrealistic body image ideals create much larger problems--diminished self-confidence, unhealthy eating and exercising habits, and an inability to see yourself as a person rather than a number on the scale.

What's Eating You? takes aim at the motivations behind your relationship with food and helps you to better understand how your need to control what you eat can end up controlling you. As you complete the worksheets in What's Eating You, you'll learn more about the beliefs and experiences that contribute to your disorder. Each worksheet includes questions and exercises targeting the cultural myths, perfectionism, stress, and lack of self-confidence that are often at the heart of a dysfunctional relationship with food. Once these issues are addressed, you'll be able to gather the strength you need to make peace with your body, exude confidence, and live a healthy life.

I hold my head high! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

What can I say about this book? It is the reason that my husband notices a positive difference in me. It is the reason I hold my head UP and look at the world directly in the eye. It is the reason that I tuck my shirt IN and don't stretch my shirt down to cover my belly.

I make no apologies for my size.
I am NOT my size.

This is the FIRST book out of thousands that I have read where I have brought out my highlighter and actually highlighted entire paragraphs.

Please

-If you hate people simply because they are fat.
-If you think all fat people are lazy.
-If you think all fat people are unhealthy.
-If you believe that all fat people are addicted to food.
-If you ASSume all fat people smell badly.
-If you are embarrassed to be at the beach with your fat spouse, friend or significant other....

This book is for YOU!

And if any of the "opinions" from the type of people above bother you-this book is also for you.

Peace-from a fat girl whose son adores her squishy belly and whose husband spanks her size 22 butt every single day.

Editorial Review:

Fat? Chunky? Less than svelte? So what!?! In this hilarious, eye-opening book, fat and proud activist Marilyn Wann takes on America's biggest fear -- worse than the fear of public speaking or nuclear weapons or getting hit by a truck -- our fear of fat. Statistics tell us about a third of Americans are fat, and common sense adds that just about everyone, fat or thin, male or female, has worried about appearance. "Fat!So?" weighs in with a much more attractive alternative: feeling good about yourself at any weight -- and having the style and attitude to back it up. Internationally recognized as a fat-positive spokesperson, Wann divulges that you can be absolutely happy, healthy, and successful ... and fat. In fact, you are out-and-out fabulous at any size!
