Fix your kid's digestion and your kid will eat! 2 out of 5 stars.
12 of 20 people found this review helpful.

At 10 months, when my friends' kids were eating solids eagerly and enjoying them, I joked that my child's favorite foods were paper and cardboard -- and green olives. But it was no joke; at every opportunity she'd stuff paper or cardboard into her mouth, and she'd eat green olives voraciously, but I could scarcely get her to swallow anything else. At 12 months she started eating a little more, and I fell into the trap so many mothers of non-eating children fall into -- "I'll feed my child ANYTHING just so she'll eat SOMETHING." Green olives? Sure, honey, eat a whole jar. Passion fruit sorbet? Sure, every night for dinner. Potato chips? I'll buy a health food brand. After some months of this approach I came to my senses and restricted her diet to just the 8 or 10 "healthy" foods she'd eat a little of. But all this changed when I had a phone consult with Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, a British neurologist and nutritionist whose own autistic son is fully recovered. Dr. Campbell-McBride gave me a step by step program for correcting my child's intestinal dysbiosis (imbalance of microorganisms in the gut) and rehabilitating her digestion. It took me several weeks to complete the transition to the first stage diet, but then -- suddenly my child had normal solid stools, every day -- no more constipation alternating with soupy smelly stuff! And when I started introducing new foods two weeks later, the first new things took a little care and "trickery", but soon my daughter was eagerly opening her mouth wide when I told her "I have a new food for you to try!" Within three months after we achieved solid stools, she was happily eating about 50 different foods -- and I mean real, nutritious, home-cooked foods like salmon, trout, butterfish, chicken, turkey, liver, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, spinach, artichokes... Moms, why settle for struggling with feeding year after year? Why settle for feeding your child *anything* just so your child will eat *something*? Fix your kid's digestive system and your kid will eagerly eat healthy foods! I highly recommend Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride's book "Gut and Psychology Syndrome", which gives you her whole treatment program step by step, as well as simple steps for getting your ASD child to eat the new foods the diet requires. An important thing Dr. Campbell-McBride points out is that ASD children, allowed to eat only what they choose, will always eat a diet that keeps their digestive systems sick and their brain function impaired. So if you need to know "you're not alone", ok, read Legge's book. But forget Leggge's diet tips -- get your kid on a real treatment program like Dr. Campbell-McBride's and you'll have a happy, healthy eater and a much better functioning child.

Editorial Review:

Finding out that your child has Asperger Syndrome can be devastating enough, but when you discover that he or she won't eat 99.9 per cent of all food and drink in the known universe, the fun really starts. The author found herself in this situation when her son first took a dislike to milk, then to virtually every other food. Her book was written to reassure other parents in the same boat, and to suggest practical methods of dealing with the problem. The experience of other parents, children, and professionals with first-hand knowledge of dietary difficulties, and their advice and comments, are also included.

Editorial Review:

About one in three American children is either overweight or obese. Childhood obesity is a crisis robbing youth of health and energy, and even causing children to die prematurely. Obesity among children, which is likely to carry over to adulthood, is also linked to a greater risk of high cholesterol, diabetes, early heart disease, and high blood pressure.

New Prescription for Childhood Obesity provides an innovative approach to fighting childhood obesity. The traditional method for weight loss and fat reduction has been to eat less and exercise more, but this does not work over the long haul. To lose weight and keep it off requires addressing the root cause of the problem: insulin resistance and the low-grade silent inflammation that is triggered by many factors, including foods and environmental causes such as pesticides, industrial pollutants, and toxins.

Now parents have an opportunity to change their child’s eating and physical activity habits even before a weight problem develops. Complete with recipes to get you on the right track, this essential guide provides specific and simple strategies, techniques, and skills that will enable children to eat the right amount of food appropriate for their level of physical activity without dieting.

This book makes you want to starve yourself 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I think that people should stop writing books on Anorexia, Bulimia and Cutting because it only drives you to do it.
While reading this book I myself suffer from being a Cutter and a Bulimic, every time Samantha cut herself it made me want to cut, every time Hannah made herself throw up I wanted to make myself throw up, every time Phoebe went into the kitchen to fill up on milk, cookies, ice cream and pie, it made me want to do the same thing, and every time Jessica starved her self for food it made me want to starve myself.
If your Anorexic, Bulimic or a Cutter you shouldn't read this book because it doesn't help you at all it only inspires you to harm yourself even more.
This was a good book but it has some bad effects.

Editorial Review:

Insatiable is an astonishingly moving story of four teenage girls whose shame, fear and confusion compel them to binge, purge and refuse to eat in misguided attempts to feel safe and in control of their lives.

This incredible, imaginative story, written in episodic format, is based on real case histories and tells a true-to-life story through character-driven vignettes. Insatiable will envelop readers in the personal and seemingly tangible worlds of each of the main characters. What makes this novel so forceful and vibrant is the way Eliot weaves her story through dynamics that inform these friendships and the therapy that helps them address their pain and fears.

For every teen trapped in this seemingly endless cycle, and those who simply enjoy reading about real life issues (i.e. teen bestsellers Speak and Smack), Insatiable is a must-read.

Editorial Review:

The most popular guy at his high school, 17-year-old Parker Rabinowitz is wealthy, smart, and drop-dead handsome. He's a sure thing for YHP (Yale, Harvard, or Princeton) according to his college consultant, whom Parker has worked with since he was 14. Parker's got just one problem: he's bulimic.

Nothing is presented in two distinct first-person voices — those of Parker and his 14-year-old sister, Danielle. Parker tells his side of the story in present-tense narrative, which becomes progressively more stripped down as he's consumed by the disorder. Danielle tells her side of the story in free verse. Danielle, who is barely even acknowledged by their achievement-obsessed parents, is known in school as "Parker's sister." Despite all this, Danielle loves her brother. And she's the only one who seems to notice what's happening behind Parker's perfect-seeming exterior, as he disappears into a world of deception and desperation.

Complex and realistic, this novel's ultimate message is one of hope.

Does this book expect your kids to live on fruits and rabbit food? 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

No, plus my kids enjoyed the many ways on eating healthy from this book. We all want our children to be fit and healthy, but the current invasion of fast food, sugary snacks, and oversize portions are creating an epidemic of overweight, inactive, and unhealthy kids. The powerful influences of the fast-food industry, omnipresent junk food advertising, and the vicious cycle of TV, computer games, and Internet addictions only make our children more susceptible to a sedentary lifestyle and a lifetime of bad habits and obesity. Dedicated mom and Nutritional Consultant Sirkka Wolke says it's time to say good-bye to sugarcoated cereals, artificially colored cheese puffs, oceans of sugary soft drinks, nutritionally deficient school lunches, and fast-food super meals!

This book is not a diet which will make the transition even better for not only for yourself but for your child. In "FitKid 7" she shows you how to create a healthy, balanced lifestyle for your kids and how to make the transition from dairy-, fat-, sugar-, and chemical-laden foods to the vibrant, natural, nourishing foods we were all meant to eat.

You'll find general dietary guidelines for healthy eating for active kids, as well as tips on pre- and post-exercise nutrition, staying hydrated while exercising, and healthy snacks. This book offers a proven plan to help parents and kids alike learn to eat healthier and feel better, it features:

Editorial Review:

At first glance, Sugar Busters for Kids looks like a no-no. Aren't we supposed to encourage healthy eating but avoid putting our children on diets? However, if you can bring yourself to look past the hype, what you'll find here is actually a fairly sensible family eating plan that aims to improve overall health with the same changes recommended by your own family doctor: more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and less animal fat and sugar, no matter what form that sugar takes.

The program revolves around the glycemic index of food, which is defined as "a measure of how carbohydrates differ in their ability to elevate blood sugars and insulin levels after they are digested." Foods with low glycemic indexes like whole wheat, black beans, milk, and cherries are encouraged, while rice noodles, corn flakes, and potatoes have high numbers and should be avoided.

Much of the book is devoted to scary statistics about the health of children worldwide. Busy parents might be wise to skip these chapters and focus on the practical matters of how to change their family's daily habits. The basic plan offers plenty of good guidelines along with meal-planning ideas, suggestions for portion control, "phasing in" new foods, and making exercise a fun family activity.

Most of us have heard that more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains improve overall health. If your family needs more specific guidelines to follow through on dietary changes, Sugar Busters for Kids may be just the ticket. --Jill Lightner
