This is a great book! I love that it shows young children with Down Syndrome participating in typical early childhood activities. There need to be more books like this that include children with special needs with out explicitly pointing out their differences.

Great Board Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

For ages 0-4. A delightful board book full of babies and toddlers with Down Syndrome going about the business of their lives. Presented in crisp, uncluttered full-colour photographs, these children swim, take a bottle, share, eat spaghetti, laugh, play in the park, and more...looking adorable all the while! This wonderful book will be reassuring to families with a new baby with Down Syndrome and makes a great gift. Day care centres, hospitals, infant-toddler programmes, libraries, paediatric practices, and support groups will want to have 'I Can, Can You?' available for the families they serve.

[$$$] for what? A happy kid who can play with others? Hmmm . 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I must admit at the beginning of my writing this review that I was inspired by an earlier reviewer of this book on this site who wrote a relatively negative one. That is too bad; as there are, probably, a bunch of parents and professionals who have chosen not to plunk down their [$$$] to buy this book based on this person's opinion.

This book is for parents and professionals who are probably trying to find something (perhaps "anything" is a more appropriate word) to help their kid/kids. The author, as she describes in the first chapter or so, has "walked the walk", which now enables her to "talk the talk". And, after reading her story, which is heart-wrenching and, ultimately, uplifting, one realizes that the author is in the business of helping "special children", not because it is a good business idea, but because it is her life's mission. (How much money does an author make on such an inexpensive book written for such a limited audience? God bless her publisher.) In short, the author is sincere, authoritative, and, seemingly, hell-bent (in the most caring, lovey-dovey way imaginable) on changing the way that special children interact with the world.

She offers no quick fixes, and specifically warns against them. She emphasizes that patience, consistency, and a long-term commitment are the keys for the best results. She clearly prefers starting children in her program as soon as possible. However, there definitely seems to be no age limit to the kids with whom she works, as one on them seems to be sporting a cheesy-beginner mustache in a photo of him doing an impossible looking pose. The previous reviewer who said that there were no tools to deal with an older child missed the obvious. The author's emphasis on positive reinforcement and "love" is obviously an attempt to build trust with the child, which is the key to dealing with children (special or not) of any age. As for the most difficult cases, the author also conducts a teachers training program and has trained many people (professionals and parents) around the world, many of whom are available to help overwhelmed parents who want to try this program with their own children. (A website address can be found in a footnote on page 61.)

As for the bulk of the book, it consists of loads of exercises (with descriptions and pictures) to help a child develop strength, muscular control, concentration, self-esteem, etc. She does not give lessons on attaining enlightenment. The goal of these exercises is to have the child integrate with other (less special?) children in a "normal" way. Not bad, if this book can deliver all this for [$$$]. Even if this book only helps 1% of the kids that participate in this program, what thinking parent would not gamble a few bucks on those odds?

As for the previous readers comment about the author saying that a child's ears moved lower relative to the rest of her face, I believe that it is unjust. First, the comment appears(on page 32) in a reprint of a letter from a child's pediatrician. Second, the pediatrician does not say that the program moved the ears; it just says that the ears moved during the time the child was participating in the program. Third, the reviewer does not claim to be medical professional, so I don't think that she (or anyone other than a medical professional who examined the child) is in a position to say anything about what happened to this child's ears or how it happened.

In short, parents/professionals must choose to spend their [$$$] or not on a book that could potentially change their kid's life. I hope that my review will help them arrive at their decision. (And, remember, if [$$$] is too much, there is always the public library.)

Editorial Review:

This is an innovative and easy-to-follow program for parents, educators, yoga teachers, and health care professionals. The book includes: a step-by-step, integrated system of yoga poses designed to increase cognitive and motor skills in children with learning and developmental disabilities. Specialised breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to improve concentration and reduce hyperactivity. And early intervention program to assure the healthy formative development of infants and toddlers.

Editorial Review:

As children with Down syndrome reach age 6 they encounter more complex speech and language demands in their learning and relationships with others. This is when gaps in communication abilities between children with Down syndrome and their typically developing peers begin to widen. Helping Children with Down Syndrome Communicate Better provides parents and professionals with the information and resources they need to improve their child s communication at school, at home, and in the wider community.

Written by Dr. Libby Kumin, an expert in Down syndrome and communication, this is the only book about speech and language issues for children with Down syndrome ages 6-14, and is the sequel to Early Communication Skills for Children with Down Syndrome. Encouraging and parent-friendly, it covers the scope of speech and language issues important for this age group, from understanding language pragmatics to building conversation skills and from using augmentative and alternative communication systems to improving speech intelligibility. Chapters include case studies, research, home and school activities for practice, and present:

The distinctions between language and speech

Factors that make speech and language difficult (articulation, grammar, fluency)

The evaluation process (school or private evaluation)

Assessment of language and speech skills

Language treatment (grammar, vocabulary, reading)

Speech treatment (articulation, fluency, apraxia)

Communication skills at school

Communication skills at home & in the community

Conversational skills (how to start & end conversations, take turns, stay on topic)

Assistive technology for communication (assessing need, types of augmentative or alternative communication, the right match for your child)

A suggested reading list, resource guide, and appendices (sample evaluations and blank forms) complement the wealth of practical suggestions and strategies in Helping Children with Down Syndrome Communicate Better. Parents, therapists, and teachers will want to refer to it often to help children make communication progress and participate fully in their lives.

Fantastic book for anyone who knows a child with DS 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I love this book! It is well written, contains great photos, colorful pages, and it has an awesome message! Ben describes his life and every so often asks "have you guessed my secret yet?" Towards the end of the book he explains about Down Syndrome. At the end he says "you can call me "special" but...most of all I hope you will call me "friend." As a special education teacher I appreciate the fact the book is really not about DS, it's about Ben. Bravo!

*~WONDERFULLY BEAUTIFUL BOOK!!~* 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is so simple and real. My son is now 20 months old and while he's simply Eli to his brothers and sisters they've become aware of him being different because of others. And so the questions came.."what's it mean?". After giving my own explaination of it just meaning he'll do things a little slower I knew I needed something more. This book let my kids know that their brother is just that, their brother. In all his glory and cuteness, and special way. It let them know he's different but amazingly the same.I LOVE THIS BOOK!!

Editorial Review:

Back by popular demand and with an updated look, this simple children's book tells the story of Ben, a young boy who has a secret. Before revealing his secret, Ben shares much about his life and likes. All readers find they have much in common with this charming boy with Down syndrome. A must have for siblings, school classrooms, church and synagogue reading rooms and public libraries. THis new edition includes mischievous bear illustrations by David Tesnar.

Buy it for your child's teacher! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book picks up from where Dr. Kumin's earlier book, "Communication Skills in Children with Down Syndrome" leaves off. Aimed at the elementary and middle school years, this book is about developing good communication and learning skills. Parents and teachers interested in reading skills will want to look at, "Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome," by Patricia Logan Oelwein. I have had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Kumin speak and she is undoubtedly one of the leading expert on communication skills in children with Down syndrome. The book starts with a look at what language skills a child will need in school and then goes on to discuss building a team and a curriculum to reach that goal. The main topic of the book is how to help the child with Down syndrome learn in an inclusive environment. Dr. Kumin shows us that children with Down syndrome can learn and can succeed but they may need to have the curriculum adapted to their needs. For example, she shows how worksheets can be confusing for a child with Down syndrome but she also shows how they can be easily adapted to make them less confusing. Many children fail, not because they don't understand the material but rather because they have trouble following complicated multi-step instructions. One specific example she discusses is math word problems. The complex language of the word problem can be very difficult for the child to understand even though they have no difficulty doing the actual math problem. Dr. Kumin discusses how IDEA requires that children with disabilities be given accommodations in order to help them be fairly assessed. As a parent or a teacher you will want to read this book. The research discussed and the many ideas put forth can help a child succeed and build self confidence where before there was fear and failure. If you are a teacher of a child with Down syndrome, buy this book. If you are a parent of a child with Down syndrome then buy two copies, one for yourself and the other for your child's teacher.

Editorial Review:

This book emphasises the crucial role teachers and speech-language pathologists play. It explains how to make adaptations to curriculum, verbal instruction, classroom routines, and written assignments. The book discusses ways to enhance social communication between children with Down syndrome and other students during class, lunch, and recess. Also covered is the use of augmentative communication methods for children with Down syndrome who are non-verbal or rarely use speech. As an added bonus, there are numerous forms and checklists for parents such as an IEP planner, home-school communication tips, samples of visual prompts, graphic organisers, and worksheet adaptations. Overall, this guide offers parents an in-depth overview of their child's language skills in school, while providing teachers and SLPs with useful ideas and adaptations that will help them meet the communication needs of their students with Down syndrome.

Babies with Down Syndrome 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic book for new parents or those newly involved with children with Down Syndrome. It helps to dispell negatives and impose the positives for those who have no knowledge at all.The only reason I did not give the book five stars is because some of the information relates to American systems and I live in New Zealand so much of this was irrelevant.

ONE of the many books you should get 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

While the book is very overwhelming with information, it explains how to deal with the issues. There is ALOT of information in this book, therefore, it should be one of the first books you get. As another reviewer said, the medical problems described are scary - but that's part of down syndrome. Fortunately not all down syndrome children have all the medical problems.

The best part in the book is the developmental charts and growth charts that a lot of doctors, clinics, health units don't have!! It also explains what you need to know for your infant all the way through adulthood. Life insurance, inheritance, wills, family estate financial planning is discussed. Very important issues that will surprise you!

I find the book to be a constant resource. I refer to it constantly.

Editorial Review:

Babies with Down Syndrome is the book that thousands of new parents and professionals have turned to as their first source of information on Down Syndrome. This second edition is written by the same group of knowledgeable parents, doctors, nurses, educators, and lawyers, who cover everything parents need to know about raising their child in an environment of love, pride and achievement. Now, the new edition of this classic guide improves on the original with up-to-date information on prenatal testing, early intervention, legal and medical issues and resources.

i am filled with gratitude nearly each time i read another section of this book. i'm thankful that mr. yong has taken on such a work and really don't have words for how this book will help me as a parent and as a follower of jesus.

Excellent, comprehensive book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is an amazing book..extremely thought-provoking. As a parent to a child with Down syndrome and a Christian, it was wonderful to be able to read such a comprehensive take on the subject. One warning to potential readers, the book is very scholarly and academic. I have to admit I didn't always necessarily understand everything being said as the language is much more geared toward theologians, but certainly the gist of the book was clear and I constantly found myself inspired to think of certain aspects of Christianity as it relates to those with disabilities in a different way. Not a quick read, but well worth the time invested.

Editorial Review:

While the struggle for disability rights has transformed secular ethics and public policy, traditional Christian teaching has been slow to account for disability in its theological imagination. Amos Yong crafts both a theology of disability and a theology informed by disability. The result is a Christian theology that not only connects with our present social, medical, and scientific understanding of disability but also one that empowers a set of best practices appropriate to our late modern context.

This book has been the MOST helpful! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

After reading this book, and I have previously read other books by Dr. MacDonald, I must say that the techniques in it are the most family friendly ideas I've ever heard of! The viewpoint is so refreshing, to think that we as families CAN be the most influential people in our child's social development is a new approach. This book has shown me how to incorporate very do-able ideas into our everyday life. The techniques included in it are something the entire family can learn and can supplement any professional's course of therapy. Professional therapists would also find this valuable...it concentrates on the social aspect of development, and really, that is the basis for all communication. To get into the child's world and to be able to match his abilities, without judgement or correction, has unbelievable, immediate results! I highly recommend this book, to families, educators, therapists, and physicians!

Editorial Review:

Children with autism and their life partners - their parents, families, peers and educators - who are not on the autism spectrum can feel as though they live in separate and even incompatible worlds. "Communicating Partners", the result of over 30 years of clinical practice, research and professional teaching, offers an innovative approach to working with children with ASDs that focuses on developing these relationships through mutual understanding. With extended case studies illustrating each stage of development and practical strategies for parents, teachers and professionals that help them to understand their child's world, "Communicating Partners" should be a useful resource for those interacting and working with children with autism.

Special Education Teacher Review 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 36 people found this review helpful.

An insightful resource! I found this book to be very informative. The author's explanation of the syndrome was clear and very easy to understand. To read the preface by Luke Jackson, a student identified with Asperger's, was also very moving and validating. I am in the process of referring a high school student for Asperger's screening. This book was my number 1 resource in my own exposure to this disability and its place on the Autistic spectrum. The author covers such innovative topics as; cognitive behavior therapy, exploring friendships, the sexuality of Asperger teens, the importance of occupational therapy, safety issues, diagnosis, parenting, interventions strategies, educational concerns and disclosure & self-advocacy. One would hope a child with Asperger's would be diagnosed at the elementary level. However, with such a new awakening to the topic, I feel there are probably hundreds of misdiagnosed adolescents out there waiting for help and insight. Parents, I urge you to approach your child's teachers if you suspect Asperger-like characteristics in your own child. Then, I recommend you all read this book!

Editorial Review:

A survival guide for teenagers with Asperger Syndrome. With contributions from professionals such as Tony Attwood, as well as from parents and those with Asperger Syndrome, this volume tackles issues that are pertinent to all teenagers, such as sexuality, depression and friendship. It also discusses topics like disclosure and therapeutic alternatives that are more specific to those with Aspergers.
