Special Education Teacher Review 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 36 people found this review helpful.

An insightful resource! I found this book to be very informative. The author's explanation of the syndrome was clear and very easy to understand. To read the preface by Luke Jackson, a student identified with Asperger's, was also very moving and validating. I am in the process of referring a high school student for Asperger's screening. This book was my number 1 resource in my own exposure to this disability and its place on the Autistic spectrum. The author covers such innovative topics as; cognitive behavior therapy, exploring friendships, the sexuality of Asperger teens, the importance of occupational therapy, safety issues, diagnosis, parenting, interventions strategies, educational concerns and disclosure & self-advocacy. One would hope a child with Asperger's would be diagnosed at the elementary level. However, with such a new awakening to the topic, I feel there are probably hundreds of misdiagnosed adolescents out there waiting for help and insight. Parents, I urge you to approach your child's teachers if you suspect Asperger-like characteristics in your own child. Then, I recommend you all read this book!

Editorial Review:

A survival guide for teenagers with Asperger Syndrome. With contributions from professionals such as Tony Attwood, as well as from parents and those with Asperger Syndrome, this volume tackles issues that are pertinent to all teenagers, such as sexuality, depression and friendship. It also discusses topics like disclosure and therapeutic alternatives that are more specific to those with Aspergers.

Victoria's Day 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I recieved Victoria's Day by Maria de Fatima Campos as a gift, and what a delightful book. I wish I had this book when I was a Special Education Paraprofessional. Inclusion is not only benefical for Victoria, but to all those she interacts with. Because she has Down's syndrome doesn't mean she can't take part in educational or social activites. This book show her interaction with peers, and hopefully these experiences will be the foundation they need to make them more sensitive and emphathic to others during their lifetime. We need more books that cover Down's syndrome and the successful transition to independance and adulthood. Great job, and wonderful pictures!

Editorial Review:

Like any other preschooler, Victoria is engaged by the world around her, excited to play with her friends, sometimes happy, and sometimes not. But unlike her peers she has Down's Syndrome. This thoughtful book follows Victoria on her typical day as she integrates into a mainstream nursery school. Young readers can compare and contrast their own experiences with Victoria’s as she reads a book, paints, bakes biscuits, and plays games. Though she may look a little different, the book shows that Victoria is really not so different after all.

Wonderful Book Featuring Children with Down Syndrome 5 out of 5 stars.
31 of 32 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful ABC book. Each letter has a full page photograph showing a child with Down syndrome in an activity with an object corresponding to a letter of the alphabet. The letter "D" for example, has a young boy with Down syndrome and a dog. The pictures are very colorful and clear. The children are beautiful models. This is a fun book and I highly recommend it. If only they made a hard board edition for little children...

GRANDMOTHER OF (D FOR BOY) IN THE BOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

I believe this book is a large step in the right direction for educating the world on Down syndrome, and realizing just how beautiful these children are. My grandson is the first Down's child to ever go through our regular school system and is doing great. You will notice in the book that there are twin combinations, where one twin has Down syndrome and the other doesn't, and there are regular children with the Down's children. All these children are from New York State but various parts of the state, there are a variety of ethnic groups. This book tells a whole other story then just a child learning their ABCs. There is another whole lesson here to be learned. You don't have to have a child with Down's syndrome for your child to get something from this book. Our moto is: They are a child first and Down's second. Another words a CHILD with Down's syndrome, not a DOWN syndrome child. I am very pleased with the positive responses this book is receiving. God bless each and everyone of you who purchased this book. My grandson also thanks you.

Children with Down Syndrome are often delayed in developing speech but can compensate for this delay by using sign language and other skills in a technique called Total Communication. This guide provides a wealth of information about speech and language development in children with Down syndrome. Parents learn what to expect as communication skills progress from infancy through early adolescence, how Down syndrome can affect those skills, and what they can do to maximize their child's potential in this crucial area of development. This book was recommended by our son's speech therapist.

Editorial Review:

KELLIE GREENWALD FULFILLS A DREAM. After her dad, Hank Greenwald, ended his career of broadcasting for the Giants, Yankees, A s & Warriors & published his memoirs in 1999, his daughter Kellie announced that she wanted to publish her autobiography, too. Anyone who knows Kellie s enthusiasm & tenacity would not have doubted that some day she would accomplish that goal, even though she had been born in 1978 with Down syndrome and a serious heart condition. Kellie did persevere, working very hard at her dynamically expressive artwork & text, so that now Kellie s dream has been realized with the publishing of her autobiography which contains Kellie s vibrant, bold illustrations that reflect the sparkling vitality of her personality & graphically complement her hand-lettered text which introduces Kellie to us as she describes memorable events & emotions of her life. Kellie s Book expresses her celebration of life & promises to be a source of hope for people with developmental challenges, their families, extended families, providers, & educators. It is a testament to the fact that when children know they are utterly loved & supported, there is no end to what they can achieve & no end to what they can give back by uplifting the lives of those around them. Kellie s Book also includes four pages of photos of Kellie enjoying various life experiences with her family & with many of her friends from the world of sports, including Dusty Baker, Thom Brennaman, Mike Krukow, Duane Kuiper, Jon Miller, & Ted Robinson. Kellie Greenwald s inspiring autobiography is written with straightforward sincerity. She invites readers of all ages & interests to celebrate life with her as she chronicles events and emotions that each of us may experience. Getting to know Kellie is to understand that the face of Down syndrome is another precious face of humanity different, & yet the same. Kellie s illustrations are as appealing & inviting as Kellie herself. Her drawings express the sparkling vitality of her personality as they graphically complement her text. Kellie is a true colorist. With an innate sense of composition she renders her drawings with elegant simplicity. Kellie loves introducing herself to us &, as we read the last page, we feel as if we ve been given a great big literary hug that is straight from her heart. Kellie s Book is a source of hope for people with developmental challenges, their families, extended families, providers, & educators. It is a testament to the fact that when children know they are utterly loved & supported, there is no end to what they can achieve & no end to what they give back by uplifting the lives of those around them. Part of sales proceeds are being donated to The Cedars of Marin, a facility for adults with developmental disablilties.

Just the right touch 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be a very sensitive and positive treatment of a topic that needs to be discussed in schools today. As more children with Down Syndrome and other disabilities are entering our classrooms, discussions of pertinent issues are important. Exposure of non-disabled children to books such as this one will facilitate their communication with and acceptance of the disabled youngsters with whom they will be expected to associate. Ms. Glatzer does an admirable job of presenting the information in an informative, gentle, non-threatening way, at just the right level for a young elementary school aged child to grasp. By writing the book as a first-person narrative, told in the words of Nick, the young boy with Down Syndrome, she makes it easy and natural for the young reader to empathize with him. The similarities between Nick and the reader are stressed, rather than the differences. This book (and the others in the same series) should be in every elementary school classroom today.

Editorial Review:

These beautifully illustrated and fun-to-read storybooks simplify and normalize complicated childhood conditions, like down syndrome. When read aloud, other children can identify why a peer may be treated differently and begin to empathize with them. In addition, children whose conditions set them apart as being different begin to feel accepted and safe. Each book includes a Kids' Quiz to reinforce new information and Ten Tips for Teachers to provide additional facts and ideas for teacher use. In Taking Down Syndrome to School, Nick's story explains what Down Syndrome is and how it affects children born with it.

Feel-good stories for everyone 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love this book because it takes a wide view, including stories from moms, dads, and grandparents about babies/kids/young adults/adults with Down syndrome. One theme ties us all together--our deep, abiding appreciation of the way Down syndrome has touched our lives.

Editorial Review:

Windows Into Heaven brings the stories of 30 different families that have been blessed by having someone with Down syndrome in their lives together to celebrate their amazing experiences. These stories give the reader positive insight into what someone with an extra chromosome can bring into their life, whether that reader be a new/expecting parent of a child with Down syndrome, someone seeking additional insight into Down syndrome all that Down syndrome is, or a person that is simply looking for uplifting and inspirational stories. Though children and adults with Down syndrome have intellectual disabilities, this books highlights the endless joys and possibilities they bring to the lives they touch.

Every medical topic I wanted to know about! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I found this book in the library of my son's early intervention office. Everything I have encountered with him, I was able to find in the book. It even talked about the delay of the emergence of his primary teeth. I wish I had known of its existence sooner. A must have for parents, grandparents, doctors and other caregivers!

A Must Have book for Parents of kids with Down Syndrome! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book before I gave birth to my daughter with down syndrome and it has been the most used book so far. It gives you so much info on heart problems, feeding problems, hints, things to check out. Kids with down syndrome need extra care and you need to be informed because not all dr's are. This book is indispensible! Well Written and some really cute pictures of kids!

Editorial Review:

This guide eliminates the need for parents to scour medical texts and journals in search of information they can understand about their child's medical condition. Easy-to-read and well-organized, the book covers medical treatments and conditions-from heart disease to skin conditions-more common among children with Down syndrome.
