Warm analysis of home with Downs child 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book was recommended by our daughter, mother of a Downs son, who knows the author. I expected to read a knowledgable, thoughtfully written book -- what I hadn't expected was top-grade writing, humor and a wonderful witness to family acceptance and faith. A truly inspiring story.

A great insight into Alaskan homesteading lifestyle 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Beside being a wonderful account of the life of Jim Haakenson and his family, this book sets the reader into the lives of homesteaders in Alaska and their unique lifestyle. It leaves one in awe of what these folks accomplished in their daily life as well as the raising of Jim into a very capable employee, and responsible adult who was well known and loved in the community.
Jim is a rich character and fun to read about. This is a well written, very interesting book, and definitely encouraging to any family raising a child with these kind of challenges.

Editorial Review:

This book tells the story of Jim Haakenson, an individual with Down syndrome, growing up in the midst of a large family in the small town of Anchor Point, Alaska. It is an inspiring, heartwarming story of Jim's life, and how he overcame prejudices and preconceptions about people with disabilities.

Culture of Life 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"A Different Kind of Perfect is composed in the style of
a memoir, and as such should be very compelling to the reader. It is
written in a heartfelt manner. Mr. Lane presents a rare and sobering
picture of the intense struggle and pain some spouses and families
encounter as they seek to make choices in accord with the Culture of
Life. Additionally, the text conveys the power of conversion and
transformation wrought through prayerful determination in union with
the grace offered in and through the Church. It is my opinion that the
author's overall message can make a significant contribution to the
Pro-Life witness of the Church."

Editorial Review:

A Different Kind of Perfect is a story about parents choosing a child with Down syndrome and the implications of that choice. It's a story about faith and blessings in an imperfect world that craves and idealizes perfection. It's also a story about finding God's perfection through love. Written with an honest voice, George Michael Lane draws the reader into his family's personal story. The struggle with whether or not to terminate the pregnancy is honest and will hit a nerve with a contemporary audience.

Compassion, Strength, Love 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book shows the true compassion, strength, and love of Camille and her whole family. There should be more people like her. This book gives people with or without a child with special needs ways in which they can help children with Down Syndrome or any other disability. I hope that Ms.Geraldi and Ms.Burris would write another book to let us know how her wonderful family is doing.

A great book, I would like to write to Ms. Geraldi 5 out of 5 stars.

Superbly written for the intended age group. 5 out of 5 stars.

I am the father of 2 daughters with Down syndrome. Bethany, age 16 and Lindsey, age 7. I have been asked to speak to Lindsey's daycare class to address why Lindsey is "different". Even with 16 years experience to form my thoughts, it has been a difficult task. I received my copy of "My Sister Is Special" today. I am extremely impressed with the simplicity and forthrightness that Mr. Jansen uses to communicate with other children about our children. Any parent is naturally prejudiced in their love and devotion to their children. The task of "explaining" our children is also natural in an adult conversation. The task of answering the innocent questions offered by children is sometimes not natural. I applaud Larry Jansen for seeing the need for literature of this nature. I plan to provide copies to every class and interested party that will have an interaction with both my daughters. Even adults will appreciate the way that Mr. Jansen has taken the complexities of genetics and make it "reader friendly" for a curious and formative mind.

Editorial Review:

A little boy learns compassion and patience as he cares for his "special" little sister, who has Down's Syndrome.

Editorial Review:

(2006 Independent Publishers Book Awards: Honorable Mention in Autobiography/Memoir Category) (2005 ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Award: Finalist in Autobiography/Memoir Category) Like many parents, Greg Palmer worries about his son's future. But his son Ned's last year of high school raises concerns and anxieties for him that most parents don't experience. Ned has Down syndrome; when high school ends for him, school is out forever. The questions loom: What's next? How will Ned negotiate the world without the structure of school? Will he find a rewarding job in something other than food service? To help him sort out these questions and document his son's transition from high school to work, Palmer, an award-winning writer and producer of PBS documentaries, keeps a journal that s the basis of this thoughtful and entertaining book. Ned's talents and interests in poetry, music, and history help him connect with other travelers on a nautical excursion around the British Isles, while his father watches from a distance. The years Palmer and his wife nurtured Ned's interests seem to pay off when Ned shares a favorite poem with a stranger or wins "Employee of the Month." Gratified and a little surprised at how easily Ned sometimes lives by his wits, Palmer also acknowledges the parenting challenges: Ned has some gaps in self-help skills; rarely considers eating anything but peeled wieners for breakfast; and needs help knowing when to curb his passions, such as bombarding people with unsolicited accounts of his family genealogy. Preparing Ned for the working world teaching him to handle money and public transportation, and finding him a job is both amusing and stressful. Palmer wisely stays out of the way when Ned is working happily in the same office and he recognizes the value of good job coaching when his son is lucky enough to get it. But it's trickier business when Ned loses money and skips the bus. Worry over Ned's vulnerabilities leads to discussing what it means to have Down syndrome and, Palmer hopes, offering him a dose of reality. ADVENTURES IN THE MAINSTREAM is a lively and insightful account allowing readers to enjoy Ned's strengths and foibles just as his father does. This personal chronicle also gives us a better understanding of what's involved for parent and child in a young man's journey from adolescence toward adulthood and greater independence.

Editorial Review:

Down syndrome is a genetic condition which causes varying degrees of learning disability as well as other health problems. Nearly one baby in every 1000 born in the UK has the condition. Parents are often frightened and confused by the birth of a baby with Down syndrome, and they need reassurance as well as up-to-date information regarding the condition.
The new edition of this highly regarded book for parents of children with Down syndrome covers a number of important new developments in research and clinical practice that have occurred in the field in recent years. These include several newly recognised medical conditions that are known to occur more commonly in patients with Down syndrome, for example, glaucoma, gastrointestinal malformations, feeding difficulties, gastro-oesophageal reflux, coeliac disease, and diabetes. This expanded edition also includes new recommendations regarding routine health checks in line with those of the UK Down Syndrome Medical Interest Group (UKDSMIG). Additionally the book covers new prenatal screening methods which have been developed to identify Down syndrome during pregnancy.
