We avoided surgery! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with reduced hearing 7 months ago; turned out she had fluid in both ears. The ENT (ears, nose, throat specialists) put her on antibiotics. Did nothing. Then we went away for a month and upon our return, we had her checked again. Fluid had decreased in 1 ear but was still strong in the other. ENT feared it would impact her learning (the decreased hearing) and lead to ear infections (they couldn't believe she hadn't had any, to my knowledge, since she was about 2). In the meantime, my 1.5 year old son also had 1 ear infection after the other, and when we returned from our trip he also was checked - fluid in both ears, plus a lingering infection they treated with antibiotics. They strongly urged me to get tubes in their ears. Our niece had them inserted and my sister as well as everyone else said it's no big deal, the worst part is seeing your child unconscious as it's general anaesthesia, but they bounce right back. I made the surgery appt and then my dad sent me an article from the Wall Street Journal citing studies that concluded the tube surgery is done way too often, and unnecessarily. Since this was coming from my very conservative dad, I thought I'd better question establishment. So I got this book, "Healing Childhood Ear Infections" by Dr. Schmidt. After 1 chapter I canceled the surgery. Instead, I got them into chiropractic care, removed dairy (cows milk) from their diets, and took them to a naturopath who put them on 3 supplements: minerals for their immune systems, and something to thin the mucous. Today I took my daughter to the ENT for a check-up (1 month after trying alternative treatments) and they were shocked - no more fluid, perfect hearing! You should have seen how proud she was when they told us. My son still remains to be checked, but knock on wood, has been infection-free since I started all this. The kids love the chiropractor - my son screams when his turn is over - and there are plenty of dairy alternatives out there (soy is also to be avoided or at least moderated but my son loves goats milk yoghurt). The supplements mix in with their juices so they don't even notice them. Anyway, I'm telling you this so that you question your own kids' treatments. According to this book, once a kid is on antibiotics it's very likely he'll develop another infection (ear) soon thereafter. In most countries, they're not even prescribed unless the baby is under 1 or has had a high fever (over 101) for 3 days. Plus, this book stated that most US children have a very nutrient-defficient diet and in particular lack minerals such as magnesium & zinc, which are very important for the immune system. Hopefully you can all benefit from this - and although I don't know which of my 3 forms of treatment did the trick with my daughter, I'm going to continue all 3. Thank goodness for this book, which gave me the tools and the courage to try safer alternatives.

Editorial Review:

Ear infections are still the leading reason parents take their child to a doctor. To combat infections, parents and doctors employ arsenals of antihistamines and antibiotics, and too quickly resort to ear tubes and surgery. In this updated and revised second edition of his bestselling Childhood Ear Infections, Dr. Michael Schmidt describes the current controversy in medical journals questioning existing treatments for chronic earaches.

must read for any parent 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was initially suggested by a colleague and my husband bought it. It has very good and informative guidelines on prevention of not only ear infections but most of the upper respiratory ailments. My son didn't contact a single cold in the first year as I followed most of the dietary instructions from this book. Dietary guidelines and other lifestyle issues that are confronted by most of the parents are very well explained. I have seen a very strong correlation between parents who follow the lifestyle suggested by the book and healthy children.

Editorial Review:

Research increasingly questions the safety and efficacy of antibiotics in treating ear infections in small children. This guide explores the underlying causes of the problem and suggests new strategies. The author discusses diet, homeopathic care, and children's vitamin absorption process. The book includes a checklist that advises parents when they should take their children to the doctor, and provides specific questions to ask in determining the appropriateness of antibiotics or surgery.

Refreshing! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have used "NO MORE AMOXICILLIN" on myself and my 4 month old. While I was pregnant, I developed a very severe ear infection. Being that I was pregnant, I couldn't take any medication. I started using Dr. Mary Ann Block's technique through manipulation. My husband gave me 3 treatments a day and before long my ear infection was gone and I felt great. I could actually feel my ears draining during the treatment. It is always nice to find a way to cure you or your loved ones without the use of extra medication. This is definitely one of those. I have been doing the manuipulation technique on my 4 month old son since he was born and everytime he goes to the pediatrician she says that his ears look great. I have also purchased the video titled,"Treat Ear and Respiratory Infections WITHOUT Antibiotics!" This gives even more in depth information and a hands on demonstration of the manipulation technique. I highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

This revolutionary book shows why Amoxicillin--one of the most overprescribed drugs of our time--can jeopardize a child's health, and why common ear and respiratory infections can and should be treated through safer and more effective means.

Editorial Review:

Protect your child. Leading pediatric experts answer all your questions about reducing the risks of antibiotic overuse. "An important book for parents.the best source I have seen about the dangers of antibiotic resistance and the risks of antibiotic overuse." --Scott Dowell, M.D., M.P.H. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "Finally, a book that discusses the problem of antibiotic overuse in a readable way, combining daily experiences in pediatric practice with scientific explanations." --S. Michael Marcy, M.D., American Academy of Pediatrics If your child has a cough, cold, ear infection, or sore throat, will antibiotics help? The answer may surprise you. Overuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, or "superbugs." Antibiotics are increasingly ineffective because they are often prescribed inappropriately to treat viral infections, such as colds, bronchitis, and sore throats. Natural supplements may offer more relief. Clearly organized and packed with vital information, Breaking the Antibiotic Habit covers all the key issues, including:
* Distinguishing between strep throat and sore throat, sinus infection and the common cold, pneumonia and bronchitis, and ear infections and ear fluids
* Helping children with viral infections feel better--without antibiotics
* Getting the most from over-the-counter remedies and natural supplements--which are best for specific symptoms, and which to avoid altogether

gives an overall good view of antibiotics and surgery 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I found the information on the different antibiotics that are used on childhood ear infections very helpful. Dr. Green gave a very brief over veiw of the alternative medicines and therapies available. He also left out how airborne allergies and food allergies affect ear infections. He seemed to lean towards surgery as an answer to ear recurrent ear infections. His advice on preparing your child for surgery was excellent. For parents who are trying to avoid surgery, I would look for another book.

No More Ear Infections--It Worked For Us! 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

In this slim volume, Dr. Block not only explains what is wrong with the current system of antibiotic overuse for recurring ear infections, but also gives clear and concise steps for relieving and preventing ear infections in kids. Dr. Block gives nutritional guidelines, but more revolutionary is her osteopathic manipulation treatment--quick and easy massage movements to stimulate the child's own immune system and drain the fluids from the child's ears.

It seems so easy that it is hard to believe that these simple massages would have any effect. But, indeed, it really works. The times our child was on antibiotics, the ear infections went away and then came back quickly, with a vengeance. Since buying this book and using the techniques, our child has been infection-free and antibiotic-free.

Dr. Block is a genius and she's had experience with her own kids' terrible ear infections. This motivated her to come up with alternative techiques for curing ear infections. Now our children can benefit from her experience and expertise. Try it. Her advice is really effective, and all it costs you is the price of this book.

Excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Purchased this book after months of my son suffering from constant ear infections even with anti-biotics and two ear tube surgeries. This book shares with us a much different approach to treating this problem then our pediatricians do. I was shocked to read the information and studies about alternative treatments vs. traditional treatments and feel like this book is the key to those parents who are going through what I have been. Your pediatricians will not share with you the research this book reveals. I wish I would have found this book sooner.
