My husband and I lost our son to SIDS in September of 2000. Our souls have been torn. The grieving process over his death has been draining. I recall little over the past 4+ months since his death. The one thing I do recall is thinking I was going crazy. I had wished their was another SIDS survivor I could speak with. Someone who could possibly relate to what my husband and I were going through. Someone who could understand our emotions. I searched under the keyword SIDS and found this book. I have not read the book in its entirety. I have read the sections I have needed at the particular times in my grieving. This book has helped me confirm that I am not going crazy. What I am feeling, though very personal, is normal. I feel this book is a neccesity for any parent who has to suffer this terrible tragedy. I have placed an order of these books in my babies memory to send to my state SIDS Coordinator in hopes that other parents may find comfort in its contents. Thank you Joani and Robin.

Editorial Review:

Formerly THE SIDS SURVIVAL GUIDE, this anthology was re-named in 2003 to reflect a broader readership. Revised and updated for 2003, it provides new research information and new articles and poems by parents who've lost children to SIDS and other deaths such as suffocation. Nineteen chapters cover everything from the particular grief of mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, and child-care providers to guilt, anger, dreams, premonitions, peer and professional support, planning funerals, enduring anniversaries, and having subsequent children.

Enlightening and Helpful! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have never had a miscarriage, but I have both friends and family who have had to endure the pain of pregnancy loss. I have to be honest in saying that I really had no idea what was involved in overcoming the grief associated with losing a child in the early stages of pregnancy. This book was extremely enlightening and helped me to understand exactly what women go through. It also gave me ideas on how to best support them. I wish I had this book 8 years ago.

Strongly encouraged and highly recommended reading 5 out of 5 stars.

There is no more poignant or painful loss to a parent than the loss of a child, whether it be by miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. There are almost a million pregnancy miscarriages a year in the United States alone, and all too high record numbers of infant deaths. Hope Is Like The Sun: Finding Hope And Healing After Miscarriage, Stillbirth, Or Infant Death follows author Lisa Church and four of her close friends as they personally navigate the difficult passage through the grief of having a child die. The result is a unique volume offering similar couples a compendium of practical tips and emotional/spiritual encouragements that can only come from personal experience and an intimate expertise. Hope Is Like The Sun is strongly encouraged and highly recommended reading for anyone having to deal with the death of a child -- before or after one is born into the family and the world.

Relatively Thorough But Allopathic Perspective 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I have used this book as a text for teaching grief and loss to naturopathic medicine and midwifery students for the past 4 years. Medical students find the information thorough, and appreciate the biological causes of pregnancy and neonatal loss, and the case studies at the end of every chapter. Midwifery students find that there is not enough information on grief counseling. To fill that important gap I supplement this book with Worden's Grief Therapy and Grief Counseling. This book would be significantly improved if it included chapters on abreactive grief responses, wholistic grief counseling, multicultural mourning practices, and complementary and alternative medicine approaches to the physical, emotional and spiritual experiences of pregnancy and perinatal loss.

Shocking facts, a must read 4 out of 5 stars.
22 of 24 people found this review helpful.

The facts presented make a great deal of sense. I am surprised that the US government is not looking into the cause of SIDS and taking action like the countries of New Zealand and Australia. The book explains the tragic occurrence and the solutions for prevention are so simple. Every new parent should read this book!

Don't waste your money. 1 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

A rule of thumb in forensics: one dead baby is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS); two dead babies is suspicious; three dead babies is murder. The Death of Innocents starts off a bit slow, but as soon as a new district attorney decides to pursue an old case of five siblings whose deaths were attributed to SIDS, the story kicks into high gear. There are two villains: the quietly furious mother who admitted to smothering her children--one of whom was 2 years old, and kicked and flailed as he died--and the arrogant medical researcher who was so eager to make a name for himself that he was willfully blind to the warnings of danger. Richard Firstman and Jamie Talan, a husband-wife team, write about abuse of the scientific method as suspensefully as they write about parental abuse of babies. The Death of Innocents was named a 1997 Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times. The NYT writes, The Death of Innocents "...seamlessly weaves the tales of the earlier and later murder cases, separated by two decades, with the complicated scientific and social issues, the many disparate personalities, documents, interviews and dramatic moments. The book is paced like a thriller, and it will be read like one."

Walk Not Alone 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is not your typical self-help book of how to pick up the pieces after a loss in your life; rather, what God can teach us while walking us through the grieving process. The author opens up herself, her experiences to help others have hope.

Editorial Review:

A story of triumph over tragedy. A mother who lost her child to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) tells how, with little resources to draw from in handling the grieving process, she avoided the pain by living a life of destruction and denial. Then one Sunday morning it all changed!

Outstanding 5 out of 5 stars.

Faith is something most people want but few of us want tested. In this moving story of personal loss, renewal, and faith, we see how one woman and her family find a very personal faith, yet one that can bring hope to others. This is the story of a child's death but it is also the story of life, of grief and of moving beyond grief. Carol Gino has an unconventional gift for faith and she shares it generously.

Life Changing . . . 5 out of 5 stars.

I discoverd the book, Then An Angel Came, by accident. I had been ill for three years with a debilitating illness called Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome. At one point, I thought it wasn't worth living. I decided to try to find some answers, first. So, I went to a bookstore, and stopped in front of an isle. I didn't know why I was here, but my eyes were led to a book titled, Then An Angel Came. I didn't know if I had enough money for it, and was prepared to use my credit card, but when I got to the counter, it was half price. I don't know why I was led to such a book, but maybe an angel helped me out . . .

I had been reading up on angels, and the title interested me. Then An Angel Came is a true story about a family. It is about a family who tries to keep itself together when a death in the family strikes. Teri, Carol's (the arthor's) daughter, loses her infant son, Gregory, to SIDS -- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Each family member: Teri, her husband, Gordon, and their daughter, Jessie -- all deal with the grief in his/her own way. This doesn't only deal with the main family, but the extended family of grandparents (Carol being the grandmother of this child), and Carol's father . . . each memeber coming to grips with life and death on his or her own.

Carol then introduces her daughter, Teri, who is a skeptic, to the spiritual side of things and meditates with her. Through these meditation sessions, Janith, a guardian angel or spiritual guide, shows, and makes herself known through Teri. In a meditative state, Teri would write pages of journals with Janith's words and messages on them. Those messages are what pull a grieving family back on their feet.

Those messages, and this wonderful family, are what makes this book a true deep spiritual experience to read.

Editorial Review:

Why do we sleep? Why do we dream? How does the brain turn a collection of new experiences into memories, dreams, and creative thoughts?

After synthesizing much of what is known about the neurobiological basis of memory and dreaming, Memory and Dreams: The Creative Human Mind offers new interpretations of how memories are formed, the nature of creativity, the purpose of dream sleep, and, in its most original section, the causes of SIDS.

Memory is represented in the brain by specific neural firing patterns that share common neurons and connections. Mathematical models therefore suggest that the brain can generate its own set of "spurious memories" by combining various features of stored memories. George Christos suggests that these spurious memories represent the basis for creativity and that they are required for new learning.

The function of dreaming in humans and almost all other mammals is one of the great unsolved biological mysteries. Christos argues that we dream in order to process recently acquired memories, to forget unimportant memories, and to generate more creative states. By organizing our memories, dreaming allows us to be more predisposed for learning the next day.

The last section of the book deals with one of the most puzzling and heartbreaking problems in medical science, SIDS. Christos posits that infants, through dreaming, may trigger fetal breathing pathways and stop breathing without any alarms going off. In other words, SIDS has no physical cause; the cause is in the mind of the infant, who "dreams" it is back in the safety of its mother's womb-a state in which it does not breathe. Christos asserts that this is the only theory that explains the cause as well as the trigger mechanism of SIDS and is consistent with all of the known facts. The book concludes with a list of suggested preventative measures derived from this provocative theory.
