Big hit with my daughter! 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for my 13-year-old. Even though the reviews were very positive, I worried about how successful of a gift it would be as my daughter is a no-nonsense girl who does not like fluff or mushiness. But she loves it! She reads it faithfully every day, and it's been a great conversation starter as she tells me about the "lesson" of the day. For her, it's just the right mixture of straight-forward talk and sensitivity without being to childish.

Editorial Review:

Having recently emerged from the tumultuous teenage years herself, Amanda Ford saw the need for a guide to help girls learn to listen to their inner voices and think for themselves. Inspired by such popular books as Simple Abundance and The Woman's Book of Courage, her book offers support to young women as they navigate one of the most confusing and challenging times of their lives. As anyone familiar with teenagers knows, there is nothing they hate more than being told what to do or how to think by "out of touch" adults. Here's the real scoop from one who knows the score. In 365 one-page essays, Ford offers stories, information, and advice on all the important issues facing young women today: boys, dating, drinking, self-esteem, fights with friends, dealing with parents, and more. Girls will find comfort, encouragement, and insight in these pages, along with suggestions for articulating and confiding their feelings, fears, and frustrations.

Mice at Mass?! 5 out of 5 stars.
39 of 41 people found this review helpful.

With grace and charm, Gortler and Piscitelli once again draw preschoolers into the heart of the Catholic faith. This book is a bit more (and necessarily so) complex than their earlier books for young people, Little Acts of Grace and Just Like Mary.

I would suggest beginning with Little Acts of Grace, moving onto Just Like Mary, and then reading The Mass Book for Children. Then pray that inspiration will strike again and that Gortler and Piscitelli will write yet another book. The earlier books will prepare children for the Mass Book. For example, if a child doesn't know what the Sign of the Cross is, the explanation on pages 7 and 16 won't be as comprehensible. Ages four to seven would be the target audience.

Mimi Sternhagen's illustrations are appealing. When you cuddle up with a child to read the book, play "find the mice." This would be an excellent book for a child to take to the sacrifice of the Mass.

I wouldn't try to read the book at one sitting. Take your time to absorb it and discuss it. It's understandable but still irksome that some adults insist on speed reading to young children. Save the speed reading for the newspaper or boring material. Encourage children to remember Masses they've participated in. Ask questions. Who is in the "parade" at the beginning of each Mass? How do you genuflect? Why isn't our kitchen table an altar? What are some stories they know from the Old Testament? They will probably enjoy showing what they know.

Editorial Review:

Here's a delightful way to introduce your little ones to Jesus in the Eucharist. With its captivating writing style and charming art, The Mass Book for Children not only teaches young children the parts of the Mass but also shows them why joining in the joyful gathering is an experience of love.

Entertaining and educational, The Mass Book for Children is perfect for the home or classroom. For children preschool to 9 years old.

sweet, but didn't answer daughter's questions 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My daughter has been asking why God doesn't talk back to her when she prays (age 3 1/2). This is a very complicated thing to explain to a child, and I hoped this book might help explain (literally) "What happens when [she] talks to God." It didn't help at all. It's a sweet book and she loves the illustrations, but as for the mechanics of prayer, it didn't help us. Still, I would recommend it because it really does address a lot of other issues (what to pray about, when to pray, etc.)

Editorial Review:

Combining her passion for prayer with her love for little ones, beloved writer and speaker Stormie Omartian teams with talented illustrator Shari Warren to share an important message: “It’s never too early to teach a child to pray.”

Stormie encourages children to develop the life–changing practices of talking to God every day and explains prayer in easy–to–understand ways. With examples taken directly from the lives of young boys and girls, she helps kids get to know God, thank Him for His love and care, and ask for His help in tough times. Stormie also touches upon forgiveness, the power of praying with others, and having a relationship with Jesus as she assures children that their prayers do make a difference.

Bright, contemporary watercolors depicting a broad spectrum of children accompany the text to present a beautiful picture of growing closer to God in prayer. For children ages 3 to 7.

Prayers, lessons, and truths for young hearts, minds, and souls

With colorful, captivating illustrations, the Catholic Prayer Book for Children helps boys and girls ages 6 to 10 discover the beauty of prayer as it encourages them to form the lifelong habit of praying.

Here are:

• Beloved, traditional Catholic prayers

• Original prayers that accurately reflect a youngster’s daily concerns and experiences

• A "how to" for offering his or her own prayers.

But more than a prayer book, Catholic Prayer Book for Children also puts in your child’s hands the basics of the Catholic Faith: the Ten Commandments, Beatitudes, sacraments, corporal and spiritual works of mercy, gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit, lives of the saints, and more.

With an age-appropriate "examination of conscience," and an introduction to the Mass and its major prayers, the Catholic Prayer Book for Children makes the perfect First Reconciliation or First Communion gift.

This is the keepsake your child will keep. The prayers, lessons, and truths we never outgrow.

Hands Down, A Must Have For Growing Grade School Boys! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

We've graduated our 2 boys into this Devotions for Boys book, they needed a more challenging collection of devotions and this book is packed with older grade school scenarios, thought provoking and sensitive material, like..July 21st devotion that reads about Mark's new neighbor who just got out of prison and the lessons of forgiveness and people judging other people. At the bottom of each devotional is a HOW ABOUT YOU series of questions that asks application questions and discussion prompts to discuss with parents and kids. This is a great way to have one on one time with your kids and find out exactly what's going on in their lives. Also, a related Bible Verse and reference is listed, for those of us who don't always have our Bible as handy as it should be. I like the way this devotional is organized, the contents page lists each topic by month and the lesson for each day so you can either do the assigned day's devotional or go to the contents page and pick a specific topic to cover with your child that he/she is struggling with at the moment. If you have boys that know the basics but need some polishing around the edges, this is the book for you! I'd recommend this book to boys above 8 years old and maybe through age 15.

Editorial Review:

Both boys and girls will be eager to read these devotionals created just for them from the same people who created the One Year Book of Devotions for Kids #1-3. A variety of themes relevant to today's elementary school-age boys and girls will encourage and challenge them to personalize lessons from Scripture.

FEATURES:

  • 365 daily devotionals
  • Bible passages to set up each day's theme
  • A contemporary story to apply each passage to today's boys and girls
  • Daily memory verse
  • "Key" for each devotional summarizing the application
  • Complete topic, Scripture reading, and memory verse indexes

A great way to begin or end the day 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was given to my 3+1/2 year old for Christmas, 2007. We have been reading the one page devotions every night before going to bed. I really enjoy the short sweet messages, prayers and scriptures. My daughter talks about Parker, Zoe, Kaitlyn and Jack as if they are a part of our family now! The illustations are adorable. A few words of caution...some of the readings bring up subject matter that might prompt a few questions from your little one (Holy Spirit, Heaven, death etc.) I would certainly recommend buying this for a parent and child to share together.

Beautiful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book to my daughter every night. The messages and illustrations soothe us and help us connect with each other.

Of the fifty-some children's books I own, this is one of three I actually enjoy reading. :)

Editorial Review:

Watch your young children grow in their understanding of God as you meet with him together using this One Year devotional. Each reading pairs a Little Blessings illustration with a short Bible verse and devotional thought that gets you and your child talking about the simple truths of Scripture. A fun, rhyming prayer completes each devotional. A great way to get young children interacting with Scripture daily.

Ehhhhh ... 3 out of 5 stars.

The illustrations are magnificent and the theme is wonderful. We have a blessing of the pets at our school on the feast of St. Francis. I thought the students would enjoy this story, but the ending is disappointing.

Barry Moser's work: A sight to behold! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A delightful story by Ethel Pochoki filled with the imagined settings and words of the animal kingdom. The engraved illustrations by Barry Moser show a master artist and illustrator at his best. Fine detail is revealed in every curving line wonderfully composed and skillfully executed in the challenging medium of block engraving. Subtle and vivid colors are used with sparing grace. A storybook to read again and again. A terrific combination of word and picture.

Captivating and Biblically sound 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Each devotion is packed full of truth. The method in which the truth is presented keeps our sons interested. Also, the truth is shared in such a way that practical application is quite obvious. I highly recommend this devotional to assist your children in growing in their personal relationship with Christ.

Excellent for 11-year-old boy 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is the first devotional book that my 11-year-old has enjoyed. He actually looks forward to reading it each day. He's a typical spongebob-watching, mp3-listening, psp-playing pre-teen, so a Christian devotional book holding his attention like this is a Godsend. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Aimed directly at the needs and interests of preteens and teens, The One Year Book of Josh McDowell's Youth Devotions is a Right From Wrong devotional that helps young people apply the Scriptures in daily decision making. Covering a host of topics that are relevant to today's teens, this devotional encourages teens to think through difficult choices, enabling them to discover why certain choices are right or wrong.
