Strong Devotional 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's a strong daily devotional for teens, but there isn't a lot of depth to it. If you are looking for a 10 minute get in touch with God, this is it. However, it doesn't provide much depth or digging deeper into God's attributes. It does deal with a lot of issues that many teens run into in a secular world: lust, peer pressure, lust, sin, lust.... You get the point, much on lust, which is a huge temptation at the age this is targeted toward.

Editorial Review:

Josh McDowell's Beyond Belief message is the foundation to launch a spiritual revolution among youth. This is a revolution to equip churches and families to raise up a generation of the cross--young people who have been transformed by Christ and the cross, who are empowered to live crossgrain to the culture and are committed to share Christ across all cultures.

Sixteen stand-alone products make up an entire family of resources that churches need to launch a church-wide revolution. These products are directed to every age group from 5 to 105, and help equip church groups and families with the tools to lead their children and youth to become transformed, passionate followers of Christ.

In this second installment of Josh's best-selling youth devotions, Josh provides 365 daily encounters with the one true God who is beyond our belief in love and grace.

Thank You Mary! 5 out of 5 stars.

There's nothing ordinary about this book! I truly LOVED reading it! I just bought it a couple of weeks ago and have already ordered two more copies to give as gifts. It's just too good not to share. Mary speaks from the heart with humor and passion as she shares her real-life experiences in raising her family under the guidance and grace of God. As a mother of two young children, I will undoubtedly turn to Mary's encouraging and inspirational words again and again in the years to come.

Editorial Review:

Ordinary Mom, Extraordinary God is a devotional aimed at the deeper issues of the heart and one that will provide a soothing respite amid chaos. Think of it as Oswald Chambers meets Busy Housewife.

Writer, speaker, and stay–at–home mom Mary DeMuth creatively focuses on the gift of motherhood as she considers

  • resting quietly in the Lord, even on crazy–busy days
  • being thankful for the duties as well as the joys of being a mom
  • offering God a heart to prune so that it can continue to bear good fruit

Personal stories integrated with scriptural truth and probing prayers will help everyday stay–at–home moms remain connected to the most amazing and extraordinary Parent of all parents.

Out of the Mouths of Teenagers 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

This book contains 60 devotions written by teenagers. I have two teenagers, and we read them as family devotions around the dinner table. The devotions are short (but not too short), cover contemporary issues of interest to teenagers, and are written in language that teenagers can understand. The book is aimed at high school students and is equally good for both sexes. The book is published by the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, but the devotions cover issues of Christian living rather than doctrine and are good for all denominations. (I am a Presbyterian minister's daughter who attended a Reformed Church college and married into the Lutheran Church, so I can say that with confidence.)

Teens will love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a Sunday School teacher for High School aged kids. I bought this book hoping to use it at the beginning of my classes as a 5 minute devotion. Right away it turned into the entire lesson each week. The devotions are wonderful, and really sparked some great conversations from the youth. I highly recommend this book!

Editorial Review:

Live Life Loud!

You passed that same ol’ bum on the street this morning. You sat next to some smelly girl on the subway last night. You ordered a burger from a worn-out cashier over your lunch hour. What do you think about these people? What does God think about them? My 30 Days Under the Overpass is not a devotional you will read in your quiet time, then carry on with your day. It’s something you’ll actually do—all day, every day—because these thirty days will rock you. Intense reflection on God’s thoughts and feelings toward the poor, broken, and downtrodden will change you…and you will begin to change the world. Not on your next mission trip. Not at church next Sunday. But right here, right now.

Ask It.

How do you treat others—those you like, know, don’t know, don’t like? Those who fall into your comfort zone, and those who shove you outside of it?

Read It.

Mike Yankoski and his buddy, Sam, chose to become homeless to discover their answer.

Think It.

Would you go sleep under a bridge in the rain? Would you panhandle for your next meal? Would you help those who do?

Believe It.

“I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me,” said Jesus (Matthew 25:45).

Live It.

This is not your average devotional. You’ll read it, but you’ll also do it. Get ready for a life change that will change lives.

“Mike takes Christ at His word, and challenges you to summon the courage to live the real Christian faith.”

Dean R. Hirsch, President, World Vision International

Story Behind the Book

“Is God enough to sustain me? Is He trustworthy? Is He worth staking my life on? What happens if I die? Will I even survive? Such questions rang loudly in my mind as Sam and I decided to lay down everything in a full embrace of the homeless life. Some experiences were uncomfortable, some shocking, some disturbing, some hilarious, and still others frustrating. But five months of life on the streets has left us, our faith, and our lives forever changed. We’ve been back from the streets for two years, and now this devotional makes it possible for people to make real-life changes. It contains stories and reflections not included in Under the Overpass .” —Mike Yankoski

Teenagers are the target audience for this book, but it is applicable to all age groups. It is an easy read with great information on prayer.

Loved it. 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved this book!. It taught me So much about prayer. It made me wanna take over the World with my Prayers!. This is a good book, but This version IS for Teenagers. So, maybe if your an adult you should get his book Intercessory Prayer, which this is based off of. This book is about Half the length of the other one tho, so if you want a quick Prayer book read, this is it.

Editorial Review:

Is Prayer really necessary? Why does it often take so long to get a prayer answered? What about praying for non-Christian friends?  What exactly is intercessory prayer? Is everything that happens to me or my familly allowed by God?  Or, is there something I need to do to make sure we're safe? For sturdents with questions about prayer, Getting in the Face of God takes them on a journey to find God's answers to the big questions about prayer.  Powerful stories and proven strategies for interceding with God will increase their understanding and their faith when they read of how God uses prayer to accomplish Hiss purposes on Earth.

a beautiful book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My mother bought this book for my daughter Hannah who is 2. She loves it and we read it each night. She has memorised it and reads it to us. It is very simply put and just lovely. I have to say it is my all time favourite book. I am ordering 2 copies of it so I can give them to friends. I think it is a must.

Learn Thanks...Simply 4 out of 5 stars.

Thank You Prayer by Josephine Page is a simple way to teach young children about prayer and thankfulness. The rhyming book doesn't have a storyline; instead, it's a written prayer that contains thanks for food, "for loving me," "the world so sweet," birds, family, and children everywhere.

What I like: The illustrations, by Caroline Jayne Church, show friendly animals in vivid color. The cover of the book is padded cardboard, and the pages are thin cardboard - more durable than regular paper pages, but more like an adult book than the thick cardboard of a board book. (My 18 month old hasn't destroyed the pages yet!)

What I dislike: The prayer does not begin with a salutation (like "Dear God"), nor does it end with an "amen." Parents can easily add these on, though. I do wish the text were a bit more "deep," but the wonderful illustrations really help make up for this; my daughter's attention is held rapt when I read this book to her.

Overall Rating: Good.

Age Appeal: 8 and under.

Editorial Review:

Thank you for the food we eat.Thank you for the world so sweet.Thank you for the birds that sing.Thank you, God, for everything...This familiar and touching prayer brings the innocence and sincerity of a young child's heart to life. The voice of a child is captured beautifully in the simple, rhyming text as he/she gives thanks for everything from food and family to God. This gentle prayer is perfect for the Thanksgiving table or right before bed.

If you want a meaningless devotional time, buy this 1 out of 5 stars.
22 of 30 people found this review helpful.

Maybe that was a little too harsh. But I started using this book with my son a couple of weeks ago. I am always looking for good devotional books, and when I saw this had some good reviews and had enough material for a year, I decided to give it a try.

It is short all right -- maybe three or four sentences on each page. And my son always wants to know the story about the picture. But there is no story about the picture, because what is on the page doesn't relate.

When finding devotional material, I want something that will hold my son's interest while teaching him Biblical concepts. Because there is no story, it doesn't really hold his interest, and the content is so simplified that it is basically meaningless. After reading it, I often don't see anything we could possibly discuss!

If you want to have an empty ritual every day that you call "devotions," this may be a great book for you and your child to use. But if you want something that will both interest and teach your child, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

Oswald Chambers' My Utmost for His Highest truly has become a Christian classic. First published in the United States in 1935, Utmost remains a Christian best-seller with millions of copies in print. Now this popular devotional has been edited and revised for children ages 2 to 7. Faithful to the essence of each original devotion, Jesus Wants All of Me includes full-color illustrations throughout. Parents and children together will delight in reading this daily devotional that encourages children to offer their very best for God. Approved and authorized by the Oswald Chambers Publications Association, Ltd.
