Editorial Review:

One of the most vivid, influential, and controversial figures of the American founding, Alexander Hamilton was an unusually prolific and vigorous writer. As a military aide to George Washington, forceful critic of the Articles of Confederation, persuasive proponent of ratification of the Constitution, first Secretary of the Treasury, and leader of the Federalist party, Hamilton devoted himself to the creation of a militarily and economically powerful American nation guided by a strong republican government. His public and private writings demonstrate the perceptive intelligence, confident advocacy, driving ambition, and profound concern for honor and reputation that contributed both to his rise to fame and to his tragic early death.

Arranged chronologically, Writings contains more than 170 letters, speeches, essays, reports, and memoranda written between 1769 and 1804. Included are all 51 of Hamilton's contributions to The Federalist, as well as subsequent writing calling for a broad construction of federal power under the Constitution; his famous speech to the Constitutional Convention, which gave rise to accusations that he favored monarchy; early writings supporting the Revolutionary cause and a stronger central government; his visionary reports as Treasury secretary on the public credit, a national bank, and the encouragement of American manufactures; a detailed confession of adultery made by Hamilton in order to defend himself against charges of official misconduct; and his self- destructive attack on John Adams during the 1800 campaign. An extensive selection of private letters illuminates Hamilton's complex relationship with George Washington, his deep affection for his wife and children, his mounting fears during the 1790s regarding the Jeffersonian opposition and the French Revolution, and his profound distrust of Aaron Burr. Included in an appendix are conflicting eyewitness accounts of the Hamilton-Burr duel.

Only Women with Women 3 out of 5 stars.
24 of 26 people found this review helpful.

Yes, the stories in this book are letters written by women, but what they don't say is that the letters are all about women with women. If that's your thing, then this book is for you, otherwise, you may want to look elsewhere for your erotica.

Excellent 4 out of 5 stars.

What more could you expect from Penthouse. Actual letters, good job weeding out the good ones from the bad.

Editorial Review:

Some of the most daring women share their most private and intimate sexual experiences in the latest steamy installment of the ever popular Letters to Penthouse series. In "Naughty by Nature," each and every letter is written by a woman and recounts her outrageous sexual encounters in graphically erotic detail. These letters are hot -- and the sex is even hotter.

Editorial Review:

Set in early eighteenth-century Scotland, Hogg’s masterpiece is a brilliant, and grimly humorous study of religious fanaticism and the power of evil. The first section of this two-part novel is the work of a putative editor. His narrative relates details of the Lord of Dalcastle’s private life, and suggests that his half-brother, a Calvinist fanatic by the name of Robert Wringhim who seems to have killed himself, may have been involved in the murder of Dalcastle’s son. The second part of the novel consists of Wringhim’s private memoir, disinterred from his grave. In this memoir, Wringhim tells a psychologically intricate tale about a sinister companion who has apparently led him to commit a series of shocking murders. However, there is a suggestion of the supernatural, and the extraordinary structure of the novel leaves the reader uncertain as to the identity, or even the existence, of the criminal.

This edition of The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner places the work within the context of Calvinism, Scottish political and constitutional history, and early psychological theories of "double consciousness." A wide-ranging introduction discusses the novel in relation to its setting as well as to the period in which it was composed.

Lasting advice--and it worked for me 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My grandmother gave me this book around 1966, soon after I married. It provided basic advice about marriage that I took to heart, and the advice and the marriage are still working after 37 years. I loaned my copy to someone years ago, and it never came back, but I just bought a replacement. There's another generation coming up that I need to loan this book to.

Dr. Shedd, a popular minister and father of five, began writing Karen a series of letters on keeping love in marriage. They were eventually published in a collection that soon became one of the most widely quoted and bestselling books of our time.

What Prank letters should be!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Most prank letter books are written by a fictitious person. This greatly reduces the humor and purpose of the prank. So far I've only come across two prank letter books written without the cowardly use of a pseudonym. Idiot Letters and Hire Me Dumbass (by Joe Mozian) are both written by real people. Their authors are gifted in the odd art of prank letter writing and accept full responsibility for their actions. While Idiot Letters does get a bit far-fetched on occasion, it is funny. Hire Me Dumbass however is honest from cover to cover, and hysterical to boot. If you are a first timer to prank letter books, both Idiot letters and Hire Me Dumbass are the best places to start.

A Fine Job. So Funny! 5 out of 5 stars.

Letters from a Friend 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I had not previously delved into any collections of Thoreau's correspondence before reading this book, but had only read the occasional quotes from letters in other works. I was surprised to find such a wealth of ideas--thoughts every bit as beautifully expressed and quotable as any in Thoreau's best books. I immediately began underlining favorite passages and discovered over sixty real gems.

H.G.O. Blake and Thoreau carried on an irregular correspondence over thirteen years starting in 1848, and their relationship changed in that time from student/teacher to friends. Editor Bradley Dean does a wonderful job of thoughtfully introducing the correspondence, of providing background information to give context to each letter, and in offering extensive notes to clarify references. The result is a book every bit as enjoyable to read as Walter Harding's annotated Walden. It gives you an intimate look at the brilliant man who many have thought lacked ordinary human feelings. As Edward O. Wilson wrote for the back cover, "In its spontaneity it is the next best thing to personal conversations with the man himself."

Editorial Review:

"With quotable lines on every page, this is an important and affecting addition to the Thoreau shelf."—Booklist

The writing of Henry David Thoreau is as full of life today as it was when he published Walden one hundred years ago. In seeking to understand nature, Thoreau sought to "lead a fresh, simple life with God." In 1848 a seeker named Harrison Blake, yearning for a spiritual life of his own, asked the then-fledgling writer for guidance. The fifty letters that ensued, collected here for the first time in their own volume by Thoreau specialist Bradley P. Dean, are by turns earnest, oracular, witty, playful, practical—and deeply insightful and inspiring, as one would expect from America's best prose stylist and great moral philosopher.

Zempel's work in compiling and translating this book of letters is a tribute to the Norwegian immigrant experience. Through these letters one discovers the great hardship and great joy brought to these individuals who in many circumstances travelled great distances on their own. Thank you for bringing insight to my own families experience through the voices of those who had the courage to venture before.

A hilarious interpretation of the song 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This book had me in fits of laughter from the start. I'm not sure why no one thought of this before - what would the recipient do with the partridge in the pear tree by the 12th day? And the question poses itself, would the recipient really be happy with the gift giver by day 6 much less by day 12? This is a fun read! Especially in a time that often lends itself to stress rather than laughter.

A funny way of celebrating then 12 days of Christmas. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What a funny little book. Being a collector of Twelve Days of Christmas books this one really is a little treasure. The story is so funny, showing us the thank you letters from a young lady to her unseen admirer from the 1st till the 12th day of Christmas. First she is so thankful for her gifts she hardly don't know what to say, but as the days passes she gets more and more trouble when her fabulous gifts arrives. It will brighten any cold Christmas day when you sit reading in front of the fire.

And the wonderful illustrations by Quentin Blake makes to book into something very special, a book you can "read" over and over.

Britt Arnhild Lindland

Editorial Review:

Everyone knows 'The Twelve Days of Christmas', but not as rewritten by John Julius Norwich in this delightful correspondence, which records the daily thank-you letters from one increasingly bemused young lady to her unseen admirer. And who but Quentin Blake could exploit the full comic possibilities of this hilarious debacle as first birds, then maids and finally the full percussion section of the Liverpoool Philharmonic create mayhem in the calm of an English country Christmas?

BEETHOVEN "A Look Behind The Notes" 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Beethoven's Letters
As a pianist, teacher, adjudicator, examiner, critic and author, I am often presented with performances of Beethoven's works that offer no insight or understanding of Beethoven the man or his music! When giving master classes, I encourage students to read his letters and analyze his music before attempting to perform it. Most consider Beethoven an unpleasant, angry, reclusive human being! Beethoven's letters prove these thoughts to be totally invalid! When writing to his brothers (Heiligenstadt Testament),Beethoven shows an essence of lament because he is so distraught about the false opinions of others toward him. In his letter's we find the true essence of this great man.
Beethoven was a man of morality, truth, and beauty very much like Schubert. Beethoven's deep love of nature is well-known and well documented in his letters and shows in his music too! He was a deeply religious man. Beethoven's attitude may have been more of conventional Catholic ecclesiastical views, but as his letters show, there are countless evidences of his spirituality.
In Beethoven's letter's the fundamental differences are clear. I feel the most important ones are these:
Purity. There is never one single moment of something demonic or unhealthy in his music.
Dignity. He is always completely honest in his music. And there is never a trace of something that might be interpreted as self pity. Pain and sorrow, yes, but nothing to suggest that he ever felt sorry for himself.
His letter's convey a very good guess that Beethoven's deafness may have been a result of his attempts to press his excellent hearing sense to the extreme in order to gain the ultimate understanding of music! The reading of Beethoven's letters is paramount for those who truly want to know the essence of the man and how to approach performing his music!

Author: Raymond Vacchino M.Mus.(MT) A.Mus. L.R.S.M. Licentiate (hon.)

Editorial Review:

Features 457 of Beethoven's most candid letters dealing with such topics as his deafness, his declining health, other composers and their influence, and his own work. Includes 15 illustrations.
