Not Nora's best.... 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This was a two-tales-in-one book by the wonderful author Nora Roberts. For some reason this book just didn't do it for me at all. The first story "Second Nature" is about magazine reporter Lee Radcliffe and recluse horror author Hunter Brown. I thought the chemistry betwwen these two characters was force fed to the reader by a bulldozer. Hunter was too perfect, he never made mistakes and he was incredibly arrogant announcing how Lee had to do this and that without ever giving up anything himself. Definitly not Nora's normal style.
The second story was "One Summer" about two photojournalists Bryan Mitchell and Shade Colby. I liked this book alot better. The couple was likable and the romance seemed real. Then I don't know what happened. Nora Roberts deadline approached and she just sort of ended the story. It was really weird. Good romance, ubrupt ending.
I wouldn't run right out and but this book , but if your a fan......

Editorial Review:

Second Nature

Getting an exclusive interview with notoriously reclusive horror writer Hunter Brown was all Celebrity magazine reporter Lee Radcliffe ever wanted. And when Hunter agrees to the interview on the condition that Lee conduct it on a camping trip, she can hardly refuse. But after spending some time alone with the seductively mysterious author, Lee discovers the only thing she wants exclusively is Hunter.

One Summer

A summer spent traveling across America with cynical, brooding photojournalist Shade Colby was not Celebrity photographer Bryan Mitchell's idea of a dream assignment. But Bryan will have to manage for an entire summer if she wants the fabulous cross-country photo shoot for a book, which they're both salivating over. However, Bryan and Shade disagree about everything—everything, that is, except the fierce attraction they have for each other….

The first time I read this, I didn't like it quite as well--mostly, I thought it was too long and too over-populated. I still think it's about 100 pages too long, but having read it once already, the multitude of characters wasn't as bothersome.

In brief, Northern Lights is about a burned-out city cop with issues who takes a job as chief of police in small town Lunacy, Alaska and ends up solving both a recent murder and one 20 years old, and falling in love with a prickly loner of a bush pilot.

At the moment, I'm remembering my initial, less favorable impressions from two years ago, when the first scene made me think the mayor was the heroine, and it seemed that there was an awful lot of crime for such a small town. Not to mention having a very difficult time warming up to the actual heroine.

But on this re-read, I focused more on Nate Burke's journey from near-suicidal depression to a healthier outlook, and Meg Galloway's prickly exterior made more sense considering her past--the disappearance of her father, and her mother's rejection of her and descent into slutdom. I even found Meg's mother Charlene more realistic/understandable than I did previously. Whether that's because of a different mood while I was reading, or if it's because, being familiar with the story, I could concentrate on different aspects, or if I'm looking for different things in books now, I'm not sure. Possibly a bit of all three.

Oh yeah. Lunacy, Alaska does bear a remarkable resemblance to Cicely, Alaska. But since I thoroughly enjoyed the latter, I'm not bothered by that. Well, maybe a smidge. I worry that, given the similarities, I'll start thinking that's what Alaska is really like. Maybe I ought to take a trip.

Editorial Review:

The colorful, compelling novel about two lonely souls who find love-and redemption-in Lunacy, Alaska.

Not for die hard fans! 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I gave this book two stars - one for Risky Business and one for The Welcoming - they are typical stories written by my favorite author. Predictable, yes, but enjoyable. Storm Warning made me mad. I wish I had not spent the time trying to figure it out, It made no sense! Do not buy this book. Go check it out at the library and read the first and last story, but skip Storm Warning!

Editorial Review:

Risky Business

She was a maddening combination of mystery and innocence. But Liz was the key to finding his brother's killer, so cynical Jonas Sharpe had to stick close…too close for comfort.

Storm Warning

He had shattered her world once, but when Lucas MacLean reentered Autumn's life, she couldn't deny the love still blazing inside her — or the evidence she had that said he could be guilty of murder.

The Welcoming

He'd never known the warmth of a home — until he found his way to Charity's inn…and into her arms. But Roman DeWinter had come looking for a criminal mastermind — and all evidence pointed to Charity.

two books in one 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

"By My Side" is two short romance stories in one. Here are descriptions from the jacket back.

FROM THIS DAY- When B.J. Clark, manager of the Lakeside Inn, met the new owner, Taylor Reynolds, she was fully prepared to dislike him. She feared-and with good reason-that he planned to transform her lovely, sleepy old hotel into a resort for jet -setters. But when sparks flew between them, B.J. soon found herself torn between her professional antagonism and her growing attraction to the man she had sworn to despise.

The description fails to mention the evil and absolutely stunning decorator who has set out to get her hands on Taylor Reynolds, and feels threatened by the new girl, B.J. The woman is able to cleverly manipulate every situation tearing the two farther apart while digging her own claws into the man she desires, but not even her deception can stop the attraction building between B.J. and Taylor.

TEMPTATION-Socialite Eden Carlbough didn't expect running a girl's camp to be easy, but she never thought she'd literally be run up an apple tree by the little monsters-nor did she think she'd come crashing down into the capable arms of orchard owner Chase Elliot. Chase knew he'd caught a windfall when he looked at the woman in his arms. He didn't like being cast as the serpent, but how could he resist when she'd just offered him such forbidden fruit?

This description does not explain much of the plot at all, so I will try to elaborate. Eden Carlbough is a socialite, spoiled with loads of money and all the proper manners and training to live up to her role, until one day when her father dies and her world comes crashing to an end. She is left with no money, and her fiancee calls off the wedding in fear of the scandal ruining his reputation. Eden's only hope of saving face is to make a new life for herself on her own without the help of her wealthy Aunt. Her best friend talks Eden into helping start an all girls summer camp. While working harder than she has ever done in her life, Eden meets the neighbor, Chase Elliot of Elliot Apples. The attraction is instant, but still hurt from her past, Eden does not give her heart so quickly. It will take the heart of a menacing child to bring the two together.

These two stories are light romances. Not exactly up to Nora Robert's usual quality. The romance falls a bit short and even though I know that because these were short stories the love between the characters had to build quickly, it just seemed a little to sudden. Especially in "From this Day" It was just a bit unbelievable, but I guess that is why we read fiction. However, I just couldn't rate this book as high as I had originally hoped.

Is it worth buying?
I hate to say it, but if you are interested in reading this book, check it out from the library. It is not worth as much as I spent off the rack.

Irish Thoroughbred

It was a dream come true for Irish lass Adelia Cunnane--to work with her uncle, a horse trainer at Royal Meadows, one of the most renowned stables in the world. But there was a catch, and his name was Travis Grant. He was the stable's owner, and a man as proud, as passionate, as opinionated as…herself.

Irish Rose

When Adelia's feisty cousin Erin McKinnon first meets Burke Logan, she's not impressed. He's a womanizing, cigar-smoking gambler who won the farm beside Royal Meadows in a game of poker. He has money--too much for Erin's liking--and a bad reputation. But Burke keeps staring at her--and Erin keeps finding herself staring back.

And she's beginning to think she may have finally met her match….

Honest Illusions 3 out of 5 stars.

Not one of my favorites. This book is about magicians and thieves, and I wasn't very interested in the subject matter, but I also wasn't crazy about the characters either. It starts in the past with Max Nouvelle and his young daughter Roxanne as they travel around performing magic. When they happen upon small time thief Luke Callahan, they take him in and make him part of their family developing his skills along the way. The story takes us thru their lives, as Roxanne and Luke grow and discover love while honing their magic and skills in theft.

One of my favorites! 5 out of 5 stars.

I've just finished reading this book for the second time and it was just as good as the first time. This is one of my all time favorite Nora Roberts books. It's fun, passionate, emotional, intriguing, everything one could want in a book. Contrary to some of her recent works, in this book the characters are very well developed, to the point that one feels as if they are real people that they will actually miss when the story is over.

The passion between Luke and Roxy is so intense that sparks almost literally fly off the page. While she does take a very long time to finally bring these two together, once she does it is magical! Aside from the relationship between the two main characters, I also love the relationship that Nora creates between Luke and Max. There are a few times when I was almost brought to tears by the poignancy of their feeling for each other. The relationship between Roxy and Max was well done also.

All in all this is one of those books that can be read over and over again throughout time and still be thoroughly enjoyable, although its age is obvious at times throughout the book. I highly recommend this book to any fan of Nora's as it is a great representation of what makes her such a great author.

I think I can get used to these! 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is my first time reading an anthology of novellas. Since each story is less than 100 pages long, all my complaints are baically centered around their shortness.

There was a definate lack of character development in most of the stories, but my main complaint is the lack of growing love. The characters in Nora Robert's "In Dreams," Jill Gregory's "The Sorcerer's Daughter," and Ruth Ryan Langstan's "The Enchantment" all fall in love in less than a week. Marianne Willman's "Bridge of Sighs" involves a recently divorced couple dealing with the problems that caused the divorce, so they of course had more of a history.

One of my favorite things about romance novels is that you see the character's love grow and their personalties evolve, but this of course cannot be done in less than 100 pages. However, all the stories were delightful, and a good deversion to read separately at different times, so not to be overwhelmed by their shortness. Definatelty a fun read when you have an hour or two to just relax and lose yourself in the world of dreams.

Editorial Review:

The four ladies who brought us Once upon a Castle and Once upon a Star are at it again with this latest anthology, Once upon a Dream. These stories revolve around the magic and dreams that draw our heroes and heroines together. At best, such as in Ruth Ryan Langan's "The Enchantment," the fantasy elements are naturally integrated into what is a fundamentally strong plot, and they help to emphasize the main romantic dilemma. At worst, the magical dreams start to feel a little bit like a Brigadoon plot device, and distract us from the characters. Even so, Once upon a Dream makes a nifty stocking stuffer, or an antidote to a slow weekend. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien
