The Cop & the Bachelor McKades 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The two remaining bachelor stories of the McKade family begin with the story of Sheriff Devin McKade. Devin has been sworn to protect and aid the citizens of Antietam, MD, however, when it comes to Cassie Connor Dolin, he has a definite soft spot in his heart. He has been in love with her for as long as he can remember; however, Cassie chose a rough path with former husband, Joe Dolin. Joe abused and beat her and terrorized their two children. With Joe behind bars for an indefinite period of time and Cassie divorced, Devin decides he has waited long enough for Cassie's heart. The only problem is that Cassie feels she has lost her chance at love and she has two children who desperately require her love and attention and are terrified of another man becoming part of their family.
The story of Shane McKade takes us to the baby of the family, however, he is just as gorgeous as his three older brothers, and has sworn himself to the life of a bachelor. There will never be just one woman for Shane until Dr. Rebecca Knight, scholar and scientist is drawn to the town by her instincts under the premise of visiting her old school friend, Regan. This is when trouble starts, not only with Shane's heart but also with the ghosts that live in his house; the house that belonged to his ancestors during the Civil War. It is certainly an interesting tale of folklore and romance and a very sweet climax to the story of the McKade Brothers.

Editorial Review:

The sinfully sexy MacKade brothers are back! New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts's reader favorites are once again breaking the hearts of women everywhere.

Sheriff Devin MacKade watched -- patiently, painfully -- as the woman he secretly cherished suffered through a less-than-perfect marriage. Now pretty Cassie Connor was free . . .but vulnerable. Devin knew he'd have to tread slowly, all the while wondering if The Heart of Devin MacKade could ever claim the woman he loved.

The youngest MacKade, Shane, was a man of the land, so the last woman he expected to catch his eye was a Ph.D.-toting academic. But Rebecca Knight had caught much more than that. One beautiful lady didn't mean The Fall of Shane MacKade from bachelorhood was a sure thing. But it was definitely a possibility . . .

Two great heroes in one great re-release! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've been a fan of the Stanislaski clan since 1990, when the first volume appeared. But those old mass market issues are yellowed and cracking with age and re-readings, so I was thrilled when they were just released in a larger, easier-to-read format.

If you haven't met the Stanislaskis yet, you're in for a treat. The warm, loving clan enfolds all newcomers to its Ukrainian heart, and who can resist? This volume contains the 3rd and 4th installments of the family saga, though they can be read as stand-alones. "Falling for Rachel" has that crisp Public Defender giving her Ukrainian best to Nick LeBeck, a troubled teenager, and his fabulously sexy older step-brother, Zack Muldoon, a former sailor who runs a classy bar on the Lower East Side. Wanting what's best for the boy inevitably leads to what's best for these two stormy lovers. "Convincing Alex" has NYC's sexiest detective up against one of Nora Roberts's most wonderfully quirky heroines, a soap opera writer with a knack for trouble.

Once you meet a Stanislaski, you're going to want to meet them all - and you'll be well rewarded for doing so. These books are among Roberts's best, and since she's written almost 200 by now, that's saying a lot!

Editorial Review:

Falling for Rachel Landlocked in Manhattan, rugged seaman Zack Muldoon needed a tough, no-nonsense lawyer to save his kid brother's delinquent hide. Public defender Rachel Stanislaski was not what he had in mind—until he discovered there was a lot more to the beautiful, coolheaded attorney than met the eye...and found himself falling for her, hook, line and sinker.

Convincing Alex When Alex Stanislaski mistakenly arrested daringly bold soap-opera writer Bess McKnee for soliciting, she decided the sexy detective was absolutely perfect—for her research and for herself. Now all she had to do was convince him she was right.…

Brianna Concannon is a woman who hates conflict. She spent so much of her life trying to keep peace in her family that she just wants a quiet existence. After being left right before her wedding, she now owns a bed and breakfast deciding to cater to the needs of others. Brianna is an artist in her own right being a whiz in the kitchen, and garden, but yet maintains complete control over everything including her emotions.

Grayson Thane is a very popular writer inspired with the surrounding town. He decides to make the small inn his temporary residence until his new book is finished. Grayson had a terrible childhood and avoids relationships and commitment on any level. When Grayson and Brianna meet, it is bringing together two damaged lost souls.

Grayson and Brianna didn't seem to be a very interesting couple. It was more a meeting of the timid. She is portrayed as a saint image, and he more a little lost boy. It didn't made for very interesting interaction.

Editorial Review:

A sparkling entry in the New York Times bestselling Born In trilogy.

The story of modern-day Ireland's Concannon sisters continues with the tale of Brianna--whose cool beauty hides a heart of fiery passion.

Dora Conroy has a small eclectic antique shop. When she receives a shipment of items she won at auction, she realizes some of the wrong items were shipped. It is then that she becomes a target by a ruthless businessman. Her new tenant, Jed Skimmerhorn, is attracted to Dora and feels the need to protect her. As they work together to solve the mystery of the black-market artwork, they must battle his past, her family, and an international criminal to have a future.

This is an older work by NR. Well written, and I liked the characters Dora and Jed. The secondary characters were very well done, and an important part of the story.

Good read! 3 out of 5 stars.

Concerning grandchildren and how the wily patriarch continuously interferes with their lives, oftentimes with great kindness, but most often seeking the completion of his own wishes. Great, likable characters you want to know more of.

The Winning Hand

When Darcy Wallace spends her last three dollars at the hotel casino and wins a jackpot worth almost two million dollars, all casino manager Robert MacGregor Blade wants to do is look out for her. But something about the lovely young woman is getting under Mac's skin and playing havoc with his big brotherly intentions. And to win her over, he'll have to take the biggest gamble of his life.

The Perfect Neighbor

Blah... 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'll start of by admitting I'm not a huge Nora Roberts fan. I usually like romance novels with a lot of humor and quirky characters (think Julia Quinn and Eloisa James) or with mature and emphathetic characters (Mary Balogh).

"Rebellion" was pretty standard fare for the genre. I completely agree with an earlier reviewer who said that Brigham and Serena were fairly shallow characters. They both had interesting backgrounds and really should have been more intriguing. But almost every interaction between the two characters played to the overbearing male/tempestous female stereotype. He provokes her by being heavy handed, she responds by some small act of violence, he wrestles her to the ground... and we all know where this is going. It should be sexy, but I guess I've just read it too many times now.

Also, it baffles me that so many heroines in romance novels (which are mostly read by mature women) act like bratty 13-year-olds. I mean really, how many grown women act like this?

And is it really sexy when a man says, "You will marry me whether you like it or not"? I mean, I'm all for bodice-rippers (it's why I read romance novels, after all) but I prefer the alpha male attitude to be left in the bedroom. Or at least have some subtlety. I know, I know, we're talking about a different time period. But these books are read by contemporary readers. There are many authors out there who do a great job balancing historical reality with contemporary sensibilities (again, Quinn, James and Balogh are great).

So if you're a fan of any of those authors, I don't think "Rebellion" will be your cup of tea. It wasn't for me.

Editorial Review:

Scotland, 1745. Against the bloody background of the Battle of Culloden, another war was waged and won--the price was honor, the victory, love.

Scottish beauty Serena MacGregor's hatred of all English began as a child when she watched as a band of Englishmen attacked her mother. Her brother's friend Brigham Langston was no exception to Serena's loathing--despite his supposed loyalty to the Scottish cause…and his good looks.

Although Brigham eventually proves himself worthy of the MacGregor family's respect, Serena is still reluctant to abandon her hatred for him and his heritage. But Brigham has other plans. Serena has captivated him with her beauty, her passion for life and commitment to her beliefs--and he refuses to let her antagonistic attitude keep him from winning her. And Serena must learn to open her mind--as Brigham opens his heart--to see the true love awaiting her.

3.5 stars. The plot was a little weak, but on balance, I enjoyed the story. 3 out of 5 stars.

Shannon is a commercial artist in New York City. Her mother Amanda had a brief love affair with Tom, 28 years earlier. Tom lived in Ireland and was married at the time. He could not leave his wife and two daughters, Maggie and Brianna. Amanda returned to America, found out she was pregnant and met and married Colin. Shannon thought Colin was her father. Just before Amanda dies, she tells Shannon that Tom was her biological father. Brianna and Maggie also recently learned that Shannon existed when they found some old love letters. Brianna asks Shannon to come visit. Shannon does. While visiting Brianna and Maggie, Shannon meets Murphy, they fall in love.

The plot for Shannon and Murphy follows. Murphy owns the family farm in Ireland. There are some stones in a circle on his land that have a mystical quality. When Murphy was a boy, he had a dream of a knight and a woman meeting at the stones. The woman was Shannon. He continued to have dreams/visions of Shannon throughout his life. When Shannon arrives in Ireland, she begins having the same dreams. Murphy is the knight in the dream. Murphy knows immediately that she is the love of his life. He courts her and pursues her and wants to marry her. Most of the story is about her reluctance to give up her career in New York and be with him in Ireland.

The best part of this story was Murphy's love and total commitment to her. I kept wanting her to choose him. The main conflict in the story was her delay and hesitation. That was ok but not the best kind of plot for me. The group of characters were pleasant to read about.

Maggie's and Brianna's stories are told in books 1 and 2 in the series. I gave 5 stars to "Born in Fire" and 2 stars to "Born in Ice."

Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: six. Setting: current day Columbus, Ohio, the village of Kilmihil, County Clare, west coast of Ireland, and Dublin. Copyright: 1996. Genre: contemporary romance.

Terrible--Who Wrote This? 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Nora Roberts (as J.D. Robb and otherwise) is typically a good writer with an excellent rhythm and a distinctive writing style. I've read a lot of her work and can't believe she wrote this book. The language is bland, the descriptions off, the characters constantly described rather than shown. Everything falls flat. I couldn't get past the first few lines and am extremely annoyed at having wasted my money on this terrible piece of work. If you've read any of her other "In Death" books, you won't be able to believe this was written by the same author. I can't, and won't be buying any more books with Roberts' name on them. I like to know that the book I'm reading is actually written by the person whose name is on the cover.

Five Stars 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The MacKade Brothers are one of the best NR series ever. About four brothers who got into a lot of trouble when they were little and now have grown up. It kicks off with the baddest of the four Rafe who returns to Antietem,MD rolling in money and wanting to restore a former landmark and turn it into an inn and meets up with Regan who moved to town four years ago and sells antiques and thinks she can resist Rafe's charms. In the second book is about Jared MacKade a lawyer who has to inform new recluse Savannah Morningside of her father's death and is attracted to her, Savannah's used to taking care of herself and her son and has difficulties letting a man into her life. Each of the brothers are very likable and strong willed and so are the women they are paired with.

Editorial Review:

New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts returns with the embodiment of tall, dark and dangerous! Back by popular demand, the irresistible MacKade brothers are once again stirring the heart of every female that crosses their path.

Ten years later and the bad boy of the bunch had returned home. Appealing as ever, not even lovely Regan Jones, the town's reserved antiques dealer, was immune to Rafe MacKade. Regan claimed her plans didn't include relationships with rebels, but her reaction to The Return of Rafe MacKade -- and his sizzling kisses -- said something quite different.

Attorney Jared MacKade had his pick of women. His dealings with Savannah Morningstar were strictly business, but thoughts of the outrageous, direct and sinfully sexy woman kept him coming back for more. With Savannah's incendiary attitude, plus The Pride of Jared MacKade, something -- good or bad -- was bound to erupt.
