I loved reading about Maggie and her entertaining characteristics and temperament. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Maggie is an artist who creates glass sculptures. She lives in a small village in western Ireland. Rogan is a wealthy Gallery owner in Dublin. He wants to represent her work. He calls her repeatedly but she never answers her phone. He has to travel there just to be able to talk to her. After he signs her, he has to send telegraphs to her because she still doesn't answer her phone. He views her as irresponsible, scatterbrained, canny, obstinate, brilliant, bad-tempered and beautiful. He's her opposite, a business mind and manner with schedules and timetables. Maggie is constantly throwing insults at Rogan and others, but I find her insults funny. An example of her insulting style is below in Caution Spoiler. In the sequel "Born in Shame," Shannon describes Maggie as suspicious by nature, hot-headed, frank to the point of rudeness, overly protective and fiercely loyal. Shannon describes Rogan as "cultured, smooth, organized, shrewd, sophisticated and sharp enough to run an organization that was respected around the world. And, she thought grimly, he had to have a sense of humor, and the patience of Job, to live with Maggie."

I also enjoyed the subplots concerning Rogan's friend Patricia and his grandmother Christine.

I'm not usually moved by descriptions of place, but in this book, I was, especially on page 116. Maggie has just finished an intense creative session for several days and is riding her bike to town for some food and a break. As the author describes the sights and scents around Maggie's bike ride, I felt like I was experiencing a piece of art. She describes the sun, the hedges, the breeze, the scents of honeysuckle, hay and sweet mown grass, etc. Maybe, because I was so into Maggie's artistic activities, I continued to feel the art surrounding her bike ride. Who knows what it was, but I felt a lovely, emotional fulfillment, with that bike ride.

"Born in Fire" is the first book in a 3 book series. It can be read alone. Books 2 and 3 are about Maggie's sister Brianna and half-sister Shannon. Maggie has small parts in the subsequent books, but it's not necessary to read them, although it was nice to see Maggie having a child in a later book. I gave 2 stars to "Born in Ice" and 3.5 stars to "Born in Shame."

CAUTION SPOILER:
I'm quoting a section of the book, to give readers a sense of Maggie's insulting style. If readers enjoy it, then I think they will enjoy the book. On page 49: Rogan offers to manage and sell Maggie's glass sculptures. He tells her he will take a percentage from all sales. She asks
"What percentage do you take?"
Hoping for a reaction, he kept his eyes level with hers. "Thirty-five percent."
She made a strangled sound in her throat. "Thirty-five? Thirty-five? You thief. You robber." She shoved back from the table and stood. "You're a vulture, Rogan Sweeney. Thirty-five percent be damned and you with it."
"I take all the risks, I have all the expenses." He spread his hands, steepled them again. "You have merely to create."
"Oh, as if all it takes is sitting on my a** and waiting for the inspiration to come fluttering down like raindrops. You know nothing, nothing about it." She began to pace again, swirling the air with temper and energy. "I'll remind you, you'd have nothing to sell without me. And it's my work, my sweat and blood they'll spend good money for. You'll get fifteen percent."
"I'll get thirty."
"Plague take you, Rogan, for a horse thief. Twenty."

Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: four. Setting: current day village of Kilmihil, County Clare, west coast of Ireland, Dublin, Paris and the south of France. Copyright: 1994. Genre: contemporary romance.

Editorial Review:

His interest in her was purely professional…or so he told himself.

Nash Kirkland had sought out Morgana Donovan, self-proclaimed witch, to help him research his latest screenplay. The hardheaded skeptic didn't believe for a minute she was what she professed to be, but Nash somehow found himself falling under her bewitching spell. Nash had never trusted his feelings. How could he be sure the irresistible passion he felt was real and not just some conjurer's trick?

Obviously Sebastian Donovan was a fraud, but fiercely protective Mary Ellen Sutherland was desperate to find a missing baby and had run out of leads. So, reluctantly, the skeptical private investigator agreed to enlist Sebastian's help. Soon she had to admit—grudgingly—that this man had some pretty remarkable gifts. Especially his extraordinary ability to penetrate her tough facade and awaken her heart.

Editorial Review:

Eve Dallas has a grisly double homicide to solve when two young lovers-both employees of the same prestigious accounting firm-are brutally killed on the same night. It doesn't leave Eve a lot of leftover time to put together a baby shower for her buddy Mavis, but that's supposedly what friends are for.

Now Mavis needs another favor. Tandy Willowby, one of the moms-to-be in Mavis's birthing class, didn't show up for the shower. A recent emigrant from London, Tandy has few friends in New York, and no family-and she was really looking forward to the party. And when Eve enters Tandy's apartment and finds a gift for Mavis's shower wrapped and ready on the table-and a packed bag for the hospital still on the floor next to it-tingling runs up and down her spine.

Normally, such a case would be turned over to Missing Persons. But Mavis wants no one else on the job but Eve-and Eve can't say no. She'll have to track Tandy down while simultaneously unearthing the deals and double-crosses hidden in the files of some of the city's richest and most secretive citizens, in a race against this particularly vicious killer. Luckily, her multimillionaire husband Roarke's expertise comes in handy with the number crunching. But as he mines the crucial data that will break the case wide open, Eve faces an all too real danger in the world of flesh and blood.

Favorite of the Series 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed these series, although Nora can sometimes rehash the same characters at times...her stories are what keep me coming back. I enjoyed Daring to Dream, I didn't like Holding the Dream as much but I loved this one! I really wanted something good to happen to Laura and I liked Michael's character and how he was so crazy about Laura and so nice to the girls.

Another reviewer mentioned Michael hitting Peter, I don't know how I missed that part because I would have loved to read that one.

Check this one out!!!

Money ain't everything 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was amazing Laura Templeton finding true love at the age of thirty. She's a divorced mother of two daughters whom she has been raising all alone for the past two years.
At the age of eighteen she thought she had found the perfect man but that ended all tragically.Despondent about the way the course of love has been flowing lately she doesn't believe in true love or soulmates she has been left with a bruised and battered heart.
As her brother Josh T askes her for a favour concerning his old friend Micheal Fury the rugged handsome 'trouble maker'.
Who's house was ruined in a mudslide.Coming from the wrong kinda family he always wanted to belong to mean something. Having been all over doing all kinds of jobs he finally ends up owning horses and looking after them his only passion. He may look all dangerous but beneath that veneer there's a lost boy whom only wants to find his way home.
Catching Laura as she is scrubbing his bath he is her tenant as her husband took all her money and her childrens funds she could use the money sho she agreed to let him stay above the stables.
From way back Laura always felt uneasy at the way he looked at her. Making polite conversations with him he shows a soft spot and asks her about her kids whom he seems to fall in love with the misguided Alison adorable 8 year old Kayla.
I don't wanna ruin the whole story so in short Serphina's dowry is what's keeping Laura T focused hopefull as sexy Micheal Fury awakens her body from a long slumber. She will keep going on. Micheal Fury though still believes she's a spoilt and snobbish woman from money & power but she soon proves him wrong she doesn't live of her families money she makes her own wages. Afraid of getting hurt because he fell in love with her, he doesn't believe that someone like her could want someone like him so he hurts her not knowing that she has also fallen in love with him. Read the book to find out the rest!!!!!!!!!*******

Editorial Review:

In the small town of Innocence, Mississippi, days are long, nights are fragrant, and secrets are hard to keep. But when a brutal killer starts claiming the lives of the town's most attractive women, lifelong neighbors are forced to wonder if the culprit is a stranger lurking in the bayou...or someone right next door.

Burned out by a whirlwind career, world-famous concert violinist Caroline Waverly arrives in Innocence looking for a little peace and some time to think. She hopes that a stay at her late grandmother's house--the one with a covered porch just made for soft summer nights--will provide the tranquillity she needs.  But Innocence has something else to offer Caroline: handsome, charming Tucker Longstreet.

Tucker is known for keeping his romances short and shallow. But one look at Caroline, and Tucker realizes that she is unlike any other woman he's met. The coolly reserved Caroline feels an unexpected thrill at his ardent advances. But when she discovers a third murder victim in the murky waters behind her home, her summer liaison threatens to become much more. Because there's just one small problem with her new romance: Tucker is the leading suspect in the killings.

Romance Plus 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was my introduction to the MacGregor Family. I instantly fell in love with every single one of them; so much so that I am now going back to the beginning and reading "Rebellion" to fully understand the how and why of the MacGregor clan. In "Brides," Nora Roberts takes us through the romantic journey and subsequent pairings of the three MacGregor granddaughters - Laura (the attorney) and the man grandpa hired to keep the home the cousins shared security-tight, Royce Cameron, Gwendolyn (the doctor), matched by grandpa with writer, Branson McGuire, and Julia (the real estate mogul), fighting all the way to the altar with builder/contractor, Cullum Murdoch, and, on this one, a two-fisted match made unknowingly not only by Daniel, but Cullum's own father, Michael, as well. Daniel MacGregor, Sr., begins each story with his memoirs as to the manner in which he had a working hand in each matching. The chosen three men were strong and handsome with exemplary values and great genes (according to the MacGregor)! Even though each story was quite similar where boy pursues girl, girl puts up a fight and finally gives in, hook, line and sinker, the stories are told in a captivating and interesting manner so that even the most unsympathetic romance reader has no choice but to delve into the lives of this fabulous family. I have read earlier romance books by Nora and felt they were just your typical soap-opera, happy ending stories, however, I believe the MacGregors themselves give the romance stories the strength and attention that encourages the reader to want to be a part of the family, albeit the amorous and idealistic worlds that only fiction can unfurl. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and look forward to future MacGregor adventures.

Editorial Review:

At age ninety, there is nothing the powerful patriarch of the MacGregor clan would like more than to see his three eldest granddaughters happily married—and he's handpicked three unsuspecting candidates he believes would make perfect husbands. But this might be his biggest matchmaking challenge yet: his granddaughters are so focused on their careers that marriage is the last thing on their minds. It's a good thing this meddlesome nonagenarian has a few tricks left up his sleeve….

Conspicuous consumption 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The MacGregor heroes in the 3 tales herein are all young, healthy, extremely handsome, well-situated financially, and successful at their occupations. Their female counterparts are all gorgeous, vibrant, sexy, young, talented, and successful. The men meet the women, sparks fly for a short time, a bedroom scene ensues, and marriage results. That's pretty much it for the plots. It's the standard for Ms. Roberts.

What I find fascinating is the insistance upon what Thorstein Veblen called "conspicuous consumption, i.e., the owning, acquiring or doing things to show others that you are financially well situated and/or do not have to do useful physical labor. Ms. Roberts insists upon telling us about the expensive wines, furniture, carpeting, rare books, clothing, education, food, restaurants, jewelry, vehicles, etc. that the men have. The characters have amassed these things with apparent ease and take them as a matter of course. Ojala, as they say in Spain. All this may make for a good story to some readers, but it is unrealistic.

The entire proposition becomes cloying after a bit. One knows exactly what to expect and when to expect it. Nonetheless, the stories are somewhat redeemed by the atmosphere--the art studio, the gambling riverboat, the bookstore. Still, I wish there were more to these stories. They could have been so much better with a little sand in the machinery.

Editorial Review:

It worked with his granddaughters. Now Daniel MacGregor, powerful patriarch of the MacGregor clan, wants to see his three handsome, eligible—but stubbornly single—grandsons married. So he's found just the women to tempt, tease and torture D.C., Duncan and Ian all the way to the altar. And you can bet Daniel will be sitting by with his feet up, a glass of whiskey in hand, smugly watching his plans unfold.…

Editorial Review:

New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her partner Peabody enter the hallowed halls of the Wilfred B. Icove Center for Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery on a case. A hugely popular vid star has been beaten to a bloody pulp - and has killed her attacker in the process. After a post-op interview, Dallas and Peabody confirm for themselves that it’s a clear-cut case of self-defense, but before they can leave the building, another case falls into their hands.

Dr. Wilfred B. Icove himself has been found dead in his office - murdered in a chillingly efficient manner: one swift stab to the heart. Struck by the immaculate condition of the crime scene, Dallas suspects a professional killing. Security discs show a stunningly beautiful woman calmly entering and leaving the building: the good doctor’s final appointment.

Known as “Dr. Perfect,” the saintly Icove devoted his life to his family and his work. His record is clean. Too clean for Dallas. She knows he was hiding something, and suspects that his son, his successor, knows what it is. Then - like father, like son - the young Dr. Icove is killed . . . with the same deadly precision.

But who is the mystery woman, and what was her relationship with the good doctors? With her husband, Roarke, working behind the scenes, Dallas follows her darkest instincts into the Icoves’ pasts. And what she discovers are men driven to create perfection - playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, the limits of science, and the morals of humanity.

Phillip Quinn has made something of himself. He is an educated accountant and has a high profile job that he loves. He struggles daily to keep a balance between the life he built for himself and the promise to his family to be there for Seth.

Sybil Griffin shows up claiming to be doing research for a new book, but then it comes out that she is in fact Seth's biological aunt. That puts the family on notice. The brothers know that she could claim Seth and destroy the family that they have lovingly put together.

Phillip is used to women falling at his feet, but when he meets Sybil he is hooked. When he finds our about her deception, he tries to resolve his feelings for her and still be loyal to the family. It has taken the four brothers a long time to build their lives and to become a family, and as Sybil begins to see this, she sides with them.

A very pleasant read (or listen) 4 out of 5 stars.

This book, which is a part of a trilogy, doesn't let you down if you are a reader of Nora Roberts. It will make you feel good and keeps you interested with the dipiction of the main characters, three "brothers," who have been adopted after experiencing extremely difficult childhoods and develope into very exciting, exceptional adults. The trilogy is about the power of love and how it can overcome extremely difficult barriers.
