Editorial Review:

After his last adventures, Urchin of the Riding Stars has taken his place as a trusted member of the Circle in King Crispin's court. Life on the island is back to normal, with little Princess Catkin growing up and testing everyone's patience in the process.
But daily life is disrupted when Lord Arcneck and other inhabitants of Swan Isle come to Mistmantle asking for help. Their home has been taken over by bloodthirsty ravens that are attacking them and ravaging everything in sight.
The brave animals of Mistmantle rush to the aid of their friends, but in doing so, incur the wrath of the invaders upon themselves. The vengeful ravens are powerful and won't stop until they hunt down and destroy every creature on the island. Only by using all of their courage and cunning will Urchin and his friends stand a chance to preserve life as they know it on their beloved home.

Scaredy Squirrel 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an adorable book for children. My granddaughter loved it so much, she made me read it to her whole preschool class.

A sophisticated, yet fun book to read with your child 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm so impressed with this book. It gave me a chuckle when I read it at the bookstore, and every time I've read it to my daughter, I've continued to smile and laugh at the story (as does my daughter). After reading piles of vacuous books about Dora, Max and Ruby, and My Little Pony, this one can revive a parent's delivery that has become less than animated over time. My daughter is three, relates to Scaredy Squirrel being scared of the unknown, and enjoys the subtle reinforcements of the days of the week and the reading time off of a clock. The book's sense of humor is sophisticated but accessible. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Scaredy Squirrel never leaves his nut tree. It's way too dangerous out there. He could encounter tarantulas, green Martians or killer bees. But in his tree, every day is the same and if danger comes along, he's well-prepared. Scaredy Squirrel's emergency kit includes antibacterial soap, Band-Aids and a parachute.Day after day he watches and waits, and waits and watches, until one day ... his worst nightmare comes true! Scaredy suddenly finds himself out of his tree, where germs, poison ivy and sharks lurk. But as Scaredy Squirrel leaps into the unknown, he discovers something really uplifting ...

The sequel is even better than the first book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I absolutely loved the Cybils-winning picture book Scaredy Squirrel, by Mélanie Watt. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to report that Scaredy Squirrel is back with a sequel. And it's even better than the first book. In Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend, our neurotic young friend gradually comes to realize that spending all of his time alone up in a tree is perhaps not the most fun that life has to offer. He sets out on a mission to make a friend, though the friend who he ends up with is not quite the one that he expected.

This book has all of the attributes that worked in the first book, strong line drawings, expressive icons, and a mix of full-page and smaller inset panels. The icons include a variety of individuals who might be biters, and hence are not promising friend material (including Godzilla and bunnies). The activities that Scaredy Squirrel undertakes by himself to pass the time include knitting and chatting with a sock puppet. The "perfect friend" that he identifies has various safe attributes (including being germ-free, with the same germ icons from the previous book). And Scaredy Squirrel's plan for making a perfect first impression is hilarious. "Make sure name tag is visible." "Wear mittens to hide sweaty paws." And so on.

Don't you love a book that makes you laugh? Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend made me laugh out loud on nearly every page. I think that the funniest was Scaredy's Risk Test for potential friends, including incisive questions like "What's your hobby? Biting or other."

Oh, I'm simply in love with this book. Parents will like it because it's well-constructed, with engaging pictures and entertaining text. Kids will like it because they'll be able to relate to Scaredy's fears, while feeling superior due to not being quite so fearful themselves. If you know any kids about to start Kindergarten, or about to enter any environment where they'll be meeting new people, you simply must buy them this book.

This book review was originally published on my blog, Jen Robinson's Book Page, on April 7, 2007.

Editorial Review:

That lovable little worrywart is back. And he's as scaredy as ever! In his latest adventure, Scaredy Squirrel sets out to make The Perfect Friend. And once he's spotted a perfectly safe candidate (with no teeth), Scaredy's ready. Armed with a name tag, mittens, a mirror and a lemon, he's prepared to make The Perfect First Impression. But just when every detail is under control, Scaredy's Action Plan takes a surprising -- and "toothy" -- turn ... Will he survive this ordeal? Will he find his kindred spirit? Will he discover the true meaning of friendship? Read Scaredy's nutty story to find out ...

Warm, FUNNY, great illustrations - family favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I did not know the extent to which my daughter would come to love this book when I purchased it. Had I known, I would have found a hardcover edition. Let me just say, this is the first book that my almost 4 year old memorized (word for word). This is the first book that my 9 year old will go to when he wants to read to her (e.g. he wants to read it and needs an excuse).

It is a warm tale about friendship, sharing, and overcoming conflict/compromise. It handles conflict naturally (e.g. real characters that really argue and act just like my kids). Real characters with real feelings and vivid imaginations portrayed with flawless, humorous illustrations (we especially love when Squirrel and Cat envision Duck's new shop). The colors of the artwork are warm and orange - just like pumpkin soup. You feel like you are peering in on their lives (like the two little bugs that appear on every page). Most importantly, this book does not come off preachy - so I think it rings true with children. In fact, my daughter uses this book to relate sharing issues - all I need to say is "remember how Duck wanted to use Squirrel's special spoon?" and she gets it - instantly.

And - for some odd reason - my children are now fascinated with pumpkins and want to cook. We have made pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin ravioli... and.... Pumpkin soup - The Best You Ever Tasted!

Editorial Review:

By the Kate Greenaway Medalist Deep in the woods in an old white cabin, three friends make their pumpkin soup the same way every day. The Cat slices up the pumpkin, the Squirrel stirs in the water, and the Duck tips in just enough salt. But one day the Duck wants to stir instead, and then there is a horrible squabble, and he leaves the cabin in a huff. It isn't long before the Cat and the Squirrel start to worry about him and begin a search for their friend. Rendered in pictures richly evoking autumn, Helen Cooper's delightful story will resonate for an child who has known the difficulties that come with friendship. Included at the end is a recipe for delicious pumpkin soup.

Scaredy Does It Again! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Scaredy's step by step plans and undoing have our house giggling all the time. Because of Scaredy we have discussed Godzilla, tarantulas, killer bees, ideas for dog's names, how the mail works, jellyfish, lobsters, and the necessity for finding our own pink flamingo lawn ornament. Melanie Watt does a great job providing Scaredy with a summer themed adventure that is not too long or too short for the toddler set but can be tolerated by a mom required to do multiple readings! Between Scaredy and Chester my daughter adores Watt's work.

Editorial Review:

We know by now that Scaredy Squirrel only feels safe when he's at home in his nut tree, with his defenses, his emergency kit and his back-up plans at the ready. So even though the sun is shining and it's time for a vacation, Scaredy does not want to go to the beach -- that vast, frightening place where a squirrel could get stranded. (Not to mention other hazards such as sea monsters, falling coconuts, seagulls, pirates and lobsters.) Instead, Scaredy builds his own safe beach getaway under his nut tree, complete with germ-free inflatable pool, artificial beach scenery, a flashlight and a plastic flamingo. Still, the lure of the genuine beach is strong -- even a dedicated homebody such as Scaredy can't resist it forever. Can his back-up plans save him from its perils? Will his No.65 sunscreen protect his delicate complexion?

When I was growing up I owned very few books thankfully I went to the library often but out of the few books I did own this was one of them! I finally introduced it to my own little girl and its as timeless today as it was 25 yrs ago. Any reader is sure to fall in love with sweet little Miss Suzy she has a heart of gold!

An Absolute Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.

This was my absolute favorite book when I was a little girl. I discovered it in first grade at my school's library. I just loved the tall oak tree where Ms. Suzy had her little house. My parents purchased a copy for me to have at home. Everything about this book stuck with me into adulthood. Many, many years later I just had to get it for my little girl, I know that she loves it too. I was so happy to see that it is still in print and children are still enjoying this adorable story.

Editorial Review:

Miss Suzy is a little gray squirrel who lives happily in her oak-tree home until she is chased away by some mean red squirrels. Poor Miss Suzy is very sad. But soon she finds a beautiful dollhouse and meets a band of brave toy soldiers.

How Miss Suzy and the soldiers help each other makes a gentle, old-fashioned tale that has captured the imaginations of girls and boys alike for forty years. Arnold Lobel's enchanting pictures are sure to make the kind squirrel and the gallant soldiers the everlasting friends of all who turn these pages.

fun book 4 out of 5 stars.

This one is fun, but if you only buy one of Fowler's books get There's a Mouse About the House! My kids liked that one much more and I also enjoyed reading it over A Squirrel's Tale. However, they are both books that I will hold on to for my grandchildren one day.

Grandmother's review 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been a hit with each of my seven grandchildren. My youngest, now 3 and not crazy about books, just spent over an hour today getting the squirrel from the front to back of the book over and over.
I've given it as a gift and gotten rave reviews too.

One of my 5-year-old's favorite books 4 out of 5 stars.

Cute book and it a favorite of my 5-year-old. "There's A Mouse About The House" is much cuter that this particular book but this one is also fun because children get to move the squirrel throughout the pages of the book.

A Squirrel's Tale 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a really good book. My 2 year old granddaughter loves it. Whenever we read it, she insists on putting the squirrel through all the slots herself. It is a cute story and we read it at least two or three times every day!!!

My 3 Year Old Son Sits Still!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Anyone with a 3 year old boy knows how hard it is to keep them still for more than 2 minutes! This is by far one of the very few books my son enjoys reading over and over again (in the same sitting). Because it's interactive, I also find him 'reading' it himself - he especially likes making the squirrel run away from the wood chopper!

We received our hand-me-down copy of 'A Squirrels Tale' from a friend and she was hesitant to give the book away since it was her two son's favorite when they were little. Her boys are now 12 & 14 and they still enjoy reading it with my son when they come over.

This book would make an excellent 2-3 year old birthday or Christmas gift for both boys and girls. It will be one of those books that you both will forever cherish and remember. I know that sounds sappy, but it's the truth! :-)

Gooseberry Park 4 out of 5 stars.

I think people should read Gooseberry Park because it is exciting. It was hard to put down.

If only all children's books were like this! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is my favorite story to read aloud to my second grade students. The characters are so endearing! Ms. Rylant paints a beautiful picture of true friendship without being preachy. She also includes enough suspense to hold the reader's attention and enough humor to keep them smiling. I love to read it to my students in late fall/early winter because of the vivid descriptions of the ice storm and changing weather. We feel like we're right there with Kona, Stumpy, and Murray! A truly remarkable story.

Editorial Review:

When Kona, a Labrador retriever, meets Stumpy, a squirrel in Gooseberry Park, they're best friends at first sight. But after Stumpy’s babies are born, disaster strikes in the form of a violent ice storm. Kona is not a fair-weather friend; he’s worried sick! How will Stumpy and her babies survive? With the help of Murray, a hilarious bat, and Gwendolyn, a wise hermit crab, Kona shows just how true--and heroic--a friend can be.

I definately enjoyed reading "Those Darn Squirrels" with my 8-year-old sister. She just loved the illustrations and was able to follow the story on her own. The story is uplifting, funny and easy for the little ones to read. The pictures are perfect! Glad I bought the book!

Editorial Review:

Old Man Fookwire is a grump. The only thing he likes to do is paint pictures of the birds that visit his backyard. The problem is, they fly south every winter, leaving him sad and lonely. So he decides to get them to stay by putting up beautiful birdfeeders filled with seeds and berries. Unfortunately, the squirrels like the treats, too, and make a daring raid on the feeders. The conflict escalates—until the birds depart (as usual), and the squirrels come up with a plan that completely charms the old grump.

Scaredy never sleeps -- sleep might mean bad dreams about dragons, ghosts, vampire bats and polka-dot monsters. Our wide-eyed hero has a plan: stay awake all night, every night. Between counting stars, playing cymbals and making scrapbooks, he does a good job of avoiding dreamland. With exhaustion taking its toll, Scaredy comes face-to-face with an alarming horoscope prediction: All his dreams are about to come true! He must prepare for the worst and his Bad Dream Action Plan includes a fire extinguisher to snuff out dragons and a fan to blast away ghosts. But when disaster strikes, will Scaredy survive this ordeal? Will he thank his lucky stars? Will he find sweet dreams? Scaredy Squirrel at Night tackles a fear everyone -- and especially the young -- can relate to. It's a bedtime story to make light of kids' fear of the dark and a fable for our sleep-deprived society.
