What can I say? 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

It's Harry Potter, what can I say? It's the series that got kids reading again. Everyone knows the plot. A boy wizard named Harry grew up with his cruel muggle (non-magic) aunt and uncle after his parents were killed in a car crash. At the age of 11 he's informed that he's a wizard, and that an evil wizard named Lord Voldemort murdered his parents and very nearly killed him. His aunt and uncle dissaproved of the world of magic and tried to keep everything a secret from Harry. He's taken away to live at a castle called Hogwarts, a school for young witches and wizards where he befriends the studious, proper Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasly, a poor boy who lives in the shadow of his brothers Charlie, Percy, Bill, and Fred and George. In book 1, Harry arrives at Hogwarts and finds that someone there is secretly trying to destroy him and is hiding a VERY big secret from the rest of the school.

In book 2, an unknown assailant is attacking students and everyone thinks Harry's doing it. We learn that no less than THREE characters are not what they seem. We are also introduced to Ron's younger sister Ginny, who has a crush on Harry.

In book 3, a murderous madman is on the loose and seems to be coming after Harry. But who, exactly is he? And the very LAST character you'd ever suspect of being evil reveals his true self.

In book 4, Harry is enrolled in the Triwizard Tournament, where three different magical schools select students to compete in daring, dangerous tests of school. Harry also attends the Quidditch world cup with the Weasleys and has a frightening run in with Voldemort and his servant in a graveyard. One character is tragically killed (I actually cried) at Voldemort's hand.

Book 4 is probably my favorite, along with 1, but there's really no such thing as a bad Harry Potter book. The movies are fantastic as well, and the sixth book is due out in a few months.

Que buena practica 5 out of 5 stars.

El 'Caliz de Fuego,' el cuarto libro de Harry Potter, es bastante largo por un genero que incluye los adolescentes y adultos jovenes. De todos modos, contiene una historia rica con misteria y mucha imageneria. Se pesaba un poco a los fines a causa de la prosa extensiva, pero sin duda la narrativa va a salir util por los proximos libros en la serie. Recomendado a los bilinguales quienes quieren aumentar sus vocabularios, ademas a niños y a corazones jovenes.

Enjoyable translation 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book along with all the other Potter books in French as part of my attempt to learn French some 40 years after high school. I had read the English and Spanish versions previously and found this and the other FRench volumes to be delighful although it took a little getting used to name changes for places and characters that probably made sense for francophiles but seemed unnecessary -- unless the french language versions of the movies also had the changes.

That said, the books have been a great aid in language learning. The translations seem pretty capably done insofar as keeping the story line anchored to the original. I have seen many book translations (such as the Fernch version of The DaVinci Code) that are not faithful to the original in many respects such as cutting out dialogue and scene descriptions.

Pretty good translation 5 out of 5 stars.

I wanted to improve my French and figured there was no better way to do so than read some books in French. So, after reading Le Petit Prince, I decided I'd much rather read something that I knew I would enjoy so I decided on the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series.

I bought Le Prisonnaire d'Azkaban not only because it was, at the time, the cheapest of the series, but also because it has a great storyline with Harry meeting Sirius for the first time. I think this is one of the best books in the series and I think this French translation kept to the original version very well. The only thing that took a bit of getting used to was that there were, of course, several name changes in this version (such as the House names). Overall, I think this was an excellent book and is great for helping to improve or retain one's French.

Great! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Having read all the books in English, I picked this up to see what I could make of it. It is extremely well-edited; it keeps the important plot points and preserves all the flavor of the original book. Reading it in French, I noticed some subtle (and really adorable) things that I missed in English, simply becuase I had to read more carefully. I kept my dictionary close at hand, but it really is written on the level of, probably, a 9-year-old.

A New Look at Magic 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When a person who has read numerous novels of fantasy and science fiction first begins to read "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" it may be difficult to align with J.K. Rowling's universe. Rather than build upon existing mythology, J.K. Rowling started from scratch and created a self-consistent universe unique from all others. The result is that some readers may initially attempt to fit their paradigms of magic, wizardry and witchcraft to Rowling's story, and become frustrated until they wipe away those paradigms. It is for this reason that children enjoy Rowling's universe so well. They have yet to acquire the preconceived notions of adults, and Harry Potter is so fun to read that they fall into the story immediately.

When Harry was a baby he encountered Voldemort, considered to be an evil wizard. Voldemort was nearly destroyed in the encounter and Harry Potter became famous, even though he was removed from the world of magic until he turned 10 years old. Unfortunately, Harry's parents did not survive the encounter and thus Harry came to live with his cruel aunt and uncle, both "muggles" who despised and denied the existence of magic.

Harry Potter is stereotypical of the classic nerd. He wears broken glasses, his clothes fit poorly, and he is put down by his aunt and uncle. Into this rather mundane and pitiless world comes a mysterious letter from a place called "Hogwart's. " Suddenly Harry realizes there is more to the world than living under the stairs, and we travel the road to knowledge and a better life with Harry because we want to BE Harry.

Harry attends the first year of seven years at Hogwart's school, and learns there is a world of magic that exists all around, but which is protected by a multitude of resources lest muggles become alarmed. Harry learns much about magic and that there are mysteries in the world of magic that affect him. Harry also begins to learn the amount of magical ability that he has inherited from his parents, and that with that power he has the ability to control the outcome of situations.

J.K. Rowling has written a book that compares favorably with other children's book. Her characters are likable and accessible, and her world is fun. There are moments of amusement and moments of fear, and children of all ages should find this book a treat. Highly recommended reading for anyone over the age of 8 years old.

Cute, and goes well with the series 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This thin little volume is an excellent supplement to the popular Harry Potter series. All of the magical species mentioned in the series are covered in this book, along with many more. Each animal is described physically, with notes on its temperament and magical ability. Also included are "Beings" such as Merpeople.

The book is arranged alphabetically. Each creature is also classified by the level of danger that it brings: Expert Wizard Needed, Competent Wizard Should Cope, etc. Harry's notes, handwritten of course, pepper the pages. Example: On the page where Chaemera eggs are mentioned as being an Untradable Good, Harry notes that "Hagrid'll be getting some next."

All in all, a worthwhile purchase.

Great Insights into Wizarding Culture 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is fun and also offers some excellent insight into the ways wizards think and how they would confront the problem of dangerous creatures and also why they find the less dangerous animals beautiful. There is also a lot of information on classifying the different species of magical creatures, as well as a distinction between a magical "being" and a magical "beast." The opening of the book, a forward by Newt Scamander is also exciting, as he explains what drew him towards the subject of magical creatures and his travels around the world. Whenever I read this book I feel close to Harry's world of witches and wizards. As Dumbledore's says, if you refuse to buy this book because you don't think charity is signigicant enough, I can only hope that when you meet a manticore along the way, a wizard is feeling charitable enough to help you!

This is silly; I give a 5 to the whole series. I expect that most of you are way younger than me or have kids. Every one of these books is worth reading, even for us that are no longer considered to be kids.

I would recommend this book to every single human being to read this.
Its fun. Its refreshing. And its one of the most original series i have read.
I would think that it would be best that you get the paper back boxed set of 7 instead of 5 for more value for money...

Peter Needham--Magus Redux 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

A fan of Peter Needham's brilliant translations of Harry Potter, I've posted a lengthy review of this latest installment, a review unfortunately too long to appear here, on my own web site: edwinfirmage com/Review of Harry Potter.pdf. The review includes numerous examples of Needham's deftness in turning idiomatic English into equally idiomatic Latin. Suffice it to say, this new translation is as good as the first. I can't imagine a better way to introduce kids to the fun of Harry Potter and Latin. And for anyone interested in learning conversational Latin (no, that's not a contradiction in terms), this book is a superb teacher.

Editorial Review:

Harry Potter is a wizard. He is in his second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Little does he know that this year will be just as eventful as the last ...The second in the Harry Potter series to be translated into Latin for the first time, this follows in the steps of other great children's classics. The huge task of translating into Latin (most translations are done from Latin) has been undertaken by Peter Needham, who taught Latin at Eton for over 30 years. James Morwood, of Oxford University, has said of the translation of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone": "The translation is great stuff. It is accurate and fluent, but it is much more than that. It has been carried off with wit, inventiveness, sensitivity and panache. I find it impossible to think of its being better done."

J.K.Rowling did it again! 5 out of 5 stars.
41 of 43 people found this review helpful.

"Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens" is the German translation of the second Harry-Potter-book. I think I don't have to tell you anything about the story - see the reviews of the English version for details (besides: who wants to read more about the content of such a book than the back page offers - it would spoil some of the fun since the Potter books are in part a crime story!).

The translation is - judging from my reading experience - well done and worth reading. The language is not too complicated so the book qualifies as reading stuff for a foreigner wishing to practice his German reading skills. I didn't find any translation mistakes - the language sounded genuine German and was vivid and fun to read. The names (always a problem when translating) are not altered, so some of the flair that comes with the nicely selected names of the original is lost to the non-English reader. But this second book shows that this is the right way to go: there is a name-letter-puzzle which plays a key role in this book and translating that one would have been a very hard task indeed.

So the translation receives 5 stars, all well earned for the content as for the translation.

My final note goes to the discussion if this book is for adults as well as teenagers or not: anyone waiting for deep insights into the society, mankind and the world we live in will be disappointed when reading this book. But it is by far the best youth book I ever read, 350 fast pacing pages and I never regretted that I bought it. Nobody whants to read Joyce all the time. And when I turn too light reading stuff, I expect quality as well. Here is where this book has its place in the adult market.

What a wonderful idea! 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 40 people found this review helpful.

I think it is a wonderful idea to translate such a popular children's book into Ancient Greek and Latin. I'm currently reading the Latin translation and am enjoying it. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the Greek translation as I'm only beginning to learn the language. I am, however, looking forward to one day being able to read it.

What I can do is provide wonderful website that contains an article by the translator telling how he came to be the translator, how he chose a style and how he chose the Greek names for the characters as well as Hogwarts, Quidditch, etc. It is a very interesting read. Do a search for Greek Harry Potter on Google and go to the Classics Page.

Editorial Review:

The Greek translation of the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, in which Harry Potter, a normal eleven-year-old boy, discovers that he is a wizard. Long ago, Harry's parents were killed in a battle with the evil Lord Voldemort. When we first meet Harry, he is living miserably with his repulsive and nonmagical (or Muggle) Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon Dursley, and their even more revolting son, Dudley. Following a bizarre but hilarious chain of events, Harry finds himself at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with an outrageous cast of characters, including super smart Hermione Granger, vile Draco Malfoy, sinister Professor Snape, and wise Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Adventures galore ensue.
